Hi all, Thomas here. This is a bit of a different video I’ve been wanting to make for a very long time. It doesn’t fit the typical Yes Theory adventure format and I wasn’t sure if people would care so for a long time I decided against it. I wrote this story 5 different ways and eventually decided that sharing my journey with mental health and how meditation has served me as an amazing companion through this, could help many that struggled the same way I have. This year in particular has been filled with unexpected challenges but we are feeling more and more like ourselves again. We are growing, learning and finding a new flow within our process that you will see the results of very soon. Excited to share and excited for more stories 💫 cheers to you all fellow Peace of Mind Seekers ✌️

I'm organically happy for the first time as a adult, as a married man and as a father. Been battling since I was 17 years old and I'm 35 now. So grateful for meditation. Saved my life

This is probably the most important video you all have ever posted. I resonate with so many things you said. I think as a creator there’s so much anxiety and depression that comes from not accomplishing goals that it feels like success will fix all of those unwanted emotions. That’s something I struggle with every day. I’ve found exercise, lowering expectations, and finding hobbies outside of work has helped. But I’ve never meditated…maybe it’s time to start

You will feel like you are not good at it even after years of doing but you get immence peace when ever you complete pranaayaamam. I am happy Thomas is benefitted by meditation.

    • @HousePeople
      @HousePeople 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Agreed. While you're young & fit enough, the body's recovery / detox mechanism is an automatic process you take for granted. Eventually that toxin residue builds up & if you're already habituated to the party lifestyle the chances are you're either going to fail to observe the early warning signs or you'll just ignore them until they reach a critical point your body/mind can't manage. That's the point at which you need to learn to reverse the damage & become more observant of the signals your body & mind send you. Nowadays I still get high off music & movement, I just swapped the intoxicants for sunlight, living foods & meditation. We are already magical chemical factories.. so cut out the middle men & their side effects & make your own!

I was someone who laughed at the idea of meditation and use to say "how can a 10 minutes thing will change our problems in life" . Years passed, I reached a bad / low phase of my life .. I did almost everything to become normal nothing worked... With no expectation I did mediation for a week (as I'm ready to take any step to become normal) and that week changed me..I still have those same problems , but it doesn't hit my heart (it's like water on lotus leaf) as I continue to meditate Im becoming a good human being, I stopped judging ppl which I did a lot earlier.
Since I have seen the fruit of meditation I want my friends to get the same, but they laugh at me 😁
I request everyone who read this to try meditation atleast for a week , see the changes and continue.

Many are taught to ignore or not know how to express their emotions healthily and aren't guided by those emotions to be true to our authentic selves. I agree with you London. We need to address our whole being to be a whole being, otherwise we will have something missing which puts a hole in our being. With that empty space, parts of our true selves begins to seep out.

    • @divineempress6059

Sometimes. Emotions are also not always true because 95% of people have some sort of trauma and the nervous system responds with conditions anxiety even when the person is in a safe space. Artists like pablo Picasso was living in his gift , yet he killed him self. Loving someone else also isn’t all about an emotion because the heart is deceitful amongst all things. Emotions do mean out of alignment , but it’s easier said than done to simply “release” the thought or emotion.

The master replied, 'you are not here to sacrifice your joy or your life. You are here to live, to be happy, and to love. If you can do your best in two hours of meditation, but you spend eight hours instead, you will only grow tired, miss the point, and you wont enjoy your life. Do your best, and perhaps you will learn that no matter how long you meditate, you can live, love, and be happy."
Moral of the story is: length doesn't matter, consistency does.
I previously went about 300 days in a row meditating. Most days I only did 3 minutes worth of meditation. I didn't notice a huge difference while I was doing it but boy did I notice when I stopped!

Two years ago I started having major panic attacks and I couldn't source what it was coming from. The chest pains were real, and I ended up going hospital out of fear I was having heart problems. It's a vicious cycle. I've luckily fallen out of that anxiety fuelled daily life thanks to the entirety of 2020 believe it or not! It gave me a full reset, and I believe that a change of lifestyle was needed. Regulating sleep patterns, eating healthily, and trying to avoid anything that affects my chemical balances (Alcohol, Weed, Coffee, Sugar etc).
Sometimes you don't realise that your daily life can be a massive trigger because you're so used to it. Being able to reflect upon what in your brain is triggering anxious thoughts, or the feeling in general is a real game changer. I wish everyone the best with their own troubles, and I can say that meditation works wonders. Thank you for the video Thomas.

Interesting. I find myself being super anxious, worried, stressed for no reason, tensed and depressed lately, And it’s not a COVID thing. I’ve always been like that to an extent, but due to medical reasons (hormonal changes and several severe surgeries) it’s become unbareable the last six months. To the point that I can only fall asleep if I feed myself the darkest and worst thoughts possible. That’s my only calm place. Wouldn’t know where to start with meditation. My head would explode. I’m so tired.

From what I read it can be tight from even a foot surgery. That and some of the stuff scott mentioned above have been helpful along with making sure I go outside and get some morning sun ( The type of light your in can effect your hormones a lot). One of the biggest misconceptions about meditating is that it's about being still and silent. Couldn't be farther from the truth - it's about reconnecting with your inner guide, the voices that represent the true self. These voices and desires get buried under the louder voices of society and external expectations.
Everything you want to know, can already be found within. You just need to look. ❤

I did meditated in 2020 during lockdown, when i was performing meditation, i was engulfed with past emotions and had no clue what to do about those bombarded thoughts and eventually quit after 5 months as those repeated mind patterns felt very hard to stop. This year in jan 2022 i was going through crippling anxiety as i was reminded/ triggered of my past mistakes, i decided to read the reading the book “Power of Now by Ekhart Tolle” and now in feb 2022 I finished 30 days meditation challenge from TH-cam and still going on ;). Now, i understand the essence of present moment, the essence of being which can’t be understood but felt and why meditation(breathing in and out) and observing your breathe is really important to help you reach your inner body to feel conscious presence within oneself. Thanks to the book which has a profound help on my healing journey. i highly recommend this book to those who is watching my comment and who is having a struggle to meditate because of their compulsive thoughts. I am 20 and I would like to share something that I wish I knew at your age and could alter the way you grow up.
Carl Jung was a psychiatrist/philosopher from the early 1900s and his writings are some of the most intricate and accurate resources on the human mind.
He said that there are two categories of mental illness: 1) actual genetic mental illnesses such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Down’s Syndrome, etc. and 2) ones we unintentionally give ourselves without knowing. These “fake” illnesses include ADHD and all the depression/anxiety disorders.
Modern psychiatrists (im assuming you have been diagnosed by one) benefit from diagnosing people with the “fake” mental illnesses because that is 90% of their patients. They aren’t evil for doing this, it is just how they are trained.
However, meditation and exploring your own mind and self image will reveal that you aren’t a “broken” person with a mental illness. You can become confident and happy by just accepting the way you feel about things and changing the way you feel about things if you find your responses to be unproductive in achieving your goals.

I struggled to meditate for some time. I was expecting to receive some other world intelligence that would potentially shift my consciousness into enlightenment. When I realized that meditation was a means to healthy parenting of my mind and physicality and viewed meditation as nurture, I began to ease into it. The key for me was finding music that I could tone along with, creating frequency, vibration that is healing to the brain and CNS which is over stimulated for all of us in this age of technology. By engaging in the music, my focus goes to anticipating the changes in pitch and thoughts literally disappear. One can add oscillating colours to the inner landscape and shift their state of mind as well as their physicality as one affects the other. It has been said that meditation can be more restorative in a short amount of time than hours of sleep. It’s important to be comfortable, not assuming any “proper” form for meditation. Be kind to yourself, give it a try.

I’m older- I graduate from a residential high school for gifted students 30 yrs ago.
Meditation definitely helps me with anxiety, depression and ADHD. This past school year I became so busy and focused on my students that I forgot myself. I’m here today to try and find my way back to mindfulness.
Practicing gratitude helps so so much.
He is so right about expectations robbing you of joy.
Good luck to you. You literally have your whole life ahead of you.
I must say, this guy definitely speaks with some hard won wisdom.

For anyone that loves Headspace: I highly reccomend the 10% Happier podcast by Dan Harris. He's also written two highly addictive to read books. The first, 10% Happier: How I Tamed the Voice in My Head, Reduced Stress Without Losing My Edge, and Found Self-Help That Actually Works--A True Story. And the second, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-to Book. Ive listened to both of them repeatedly. They are so good and well told. The second books focuses solely on how to help you meditate. Very useful!

Thank you for being so open and honest about this - I remember having the notion that meditation was going to solve all my anxieties and give me control over my emotions, but in fact I learned later on down the line that it helped me understand why it was I feeling anxious and gave me the tools to learn to be okay with those emotions. It's a very tough journey, but its comforting that there are others going through it as well.

I never used to believe these kinds of videos till I actually was finally able to understand what meditation was really about. It's not about "not thinking" it's about believing in the power of the present moment. Even if I'm in immense pain I try to stop and move back from lashing out or reacting. Meditation can come in many different forms, you can figure out your own. I sometimes go for walks without my phone or just stay quiet for a few minutes no matter what thought comes to my head after a fight - I count those as mediation too and that's how I've been able to do it. Sitting quietly with my eyes closed doesn't work for me. And the most powerful realisation was the one where I understood that that was okay. It's about accepting things, letting go of what you wanted, but also not being disappoited or frustrated when you can't sometimes! Hope this helps somebody.

Does this ever sound like me, I worked my whole life and was a single mom, Then took care of my son that had cancer. I was always on the move. Always taking care of everyone but me. When my son passed away my life came crashing down around me. I no longer cared about anyone or anything. I was really hoping a meteor would fall on me and end it all. For 4 years I could not leave the house. When I went to the store or anyplace where people were I had panic attacks and horrible anxiety. I hate pills but felt I had no choice so after trying a few I said F this I am going to find another way. I am slowly getting better but more work needs to be done. First of all, Thanks Thomas.
This is gonna be a long comment; I don't expect anyone reading this, I am just expressing myself.
External success brings us joy which is momentary; true happiness is a constant feeling irrespective of whatever one may be going through to some extent.
I also feel blessed to have understood this in this early stage of my life; most of us learn the hard way just like Thomas did. Same happened to me, being a student I postponed " my happiness and taking sometime to feel my life " to checkpoints where I would reach by accomplishing my goals (internship goals and etc.). But most of the times not everything has rolled out to be what I planned though I put in the required effort that I knew I had to put in for that particular matter.
But not always failing to accomplish your goals is bad, most of the times I have deviated into different paths that have brought me something greater than my previously fixed checkpoint. But as I tangled my moment of happiness to that previous checkpoint which I never reached, I also could never feel that happiness I was aiming for.
After a long time experiencing this I finally took sometime off to figure out what actually I am chasing, happiness or momentary joy?
And then I luckily understood that true happiness cannot be tangled with checkpoints in ur life; it should be constant.
This doesn't mean I hv learnt how to be happy constantly and how to decouple that feeling from the goals and aims in your life. I have just started finding ways to learn this, would be great if anyone reads till this point 😇.

I use to meditate and stopped until I came across a huge struggle in my life that emotional destroyed me and I used alcohol and weed to minimize my anxiety and depression. One day I decided to meditate I used chanting mediation and hypnotic meditation which I fell asleep in but after one night I stopped smoking and drinking completely. I used heart meditation to heal my heart which stopped all the angry and anxiety in my mind but I had to go thru all the emotions and I had to forgive myself and people. I am still meditating I make sure to make time and I work out a few days a week to move my body and increase positivity. Anyone who is struggling meditate it helps so much and recenters your mind and body.

  • @danieljmarvin

I feel so bad my guy. It sounds like you missed some helpful teachings surrounding mindfulness meditation. You can practice mindfulness in loud areas and with your eyes open. It doesn't matter. Also, it really is about doing less not more. (That isn't to say that there are not some very large issues surrounding the hard problem of consiounceness.) Try "waking up" with sam harris.
I'll give a short strategy to not only quiet the mind, but to realize what needs to be done to do so.
Step 1: talk out loud and notice how it feels to speak. (this is not necessarily easy, but if you have some experience in meditation you can do it)
Step 2: speak in your mind. Notice how thinking in your mind feels similar to speaking out loud. Switch back and forth a couple times to really notice the similarities (and differences) in intention and effort.
Step 3: listen to someone else speak (a video would work too if you don't have a person there).
Step 4: listen to your own thoughts. Once you do this, you will notice that when you listen to your own thoughts they disappear.
When you are thinking and "focusing" on your own thoughts, you are actually doing step 2. Notice that when you are thinking through a problem or just imagining any sounds, you are actually doing what experientially feels like talking NOT listening. Genuinely listen to your own thoughts like you would do in step 3 and you will see that there is no one inside talking. You cant both talk and listen to yourself.
Additionally, the "rule" of "don't pass judgment on the thought" is also misleading. It really trying to say "notice that thinking about other thoughts in your head is not the same as noticing a thought." To the average person, self-observation means thinking about thoughts. Thinking about thoughts CAN be negative, but it can also be neutral. The term judgment in modern western culture has this connotation of negativity. Here, judgment means ANY thought about a thought. The goal is to get you to realize that your whole concept of self emerges from thinking without realizing it and that it is just an illusion.
Also, the whole idea of "meditating for 1000 days straight" is itself an idea (sound in your head) that qualified your experiences. I get that you need clickbait, but lingering thoughts like these keep your ego alive. Do you count the consecutive days you brush your teeth? No, it's just something that happens in a day.
I am far from experienced in this topic, but these are issues that I struggled with in the beginning and these are the answers I found.
I know the overall tone of this comment sounds ctitical, but this really is a small part of what I feel about this video. Overall, I am very glad that you have gained so much from practicing mindfulness and that you are trying to get others to practice it.
    I hope these ideas help!
