Sorting out the Polytunnel Tomatoes, Harvesting Shallots and Sowing Salad || Plot 37 (Episode 65)

  • This week on the allotment we have had all the weather! Vlogging in the rain mostly! But because of the rain we have decided to lift (harvest) the shallots that were grown from sets. They probably could have done with a few days of sunshine but the weather has been so wet they are in danger of rotting out in the ground if we didn't harvest them! They are a little safer because of being grown in a raised bed but they are starting to look a bit soft.
I am also tidying up the tomatoes that are growing in the polytunnel. The tomatoes are getting quite tall and i am pruning them and tying in the plants and tightening the strings they are growing up. I also give the tomatoes a really good feed with a liquid seaweed feed. Feeding tomatoes is really important at this stage just as they are beginning to produce their first fruit!
After that i am sowing loads of lettuce seeds into module trays ready for planting out when the current lot are finished.
The varieties i am sowing are -
    Cuor D’Oro amzn.to/3dxvKcC
    Little Gem amzn.to/3ydnQgd
    Valmaine amzn.to/3yflQEq
    Rossa Di Trento amzn.to/3yai4vS
    Dragons Tongue (find at www.realseeds.c...)
    Aaaaand Webbs Wonderful amzn.to/2VccRpc
I also sow some more herbs because home grown herbs and being able to pick them fresh is the best. The varieties were -
    Dill amzn.to/3hFTBYT
    Chives amzn.to/3htLvm1
    Lisette Parsley amzn.to/3juiRDT
    Giant Italia Parsley amzn.to/365kkZl
    Genovese Basil amzn.to/3ycbxAH
    Thai Basil amzn.to/3qGqxUQ
    Lilia amzn.to/3jFuQOK
    Pompeii amzn.to/2UhOEx0

I learned something new today. I thought I was growing onions but watching your video I see they are shallots. I was given 20 of them last year and just left them in the ground. Today I harvested 100 of them. I will replant the small ones and do it all over. Thank you.

Grow radish close by as a sacrificial lure, slugs and snails prefer it, then you just compost the radish that has been devoured.. :) Saved my french beans and brassicas doing this way this year.

    Hi Jessie
It's a real joy to see you at work. I usually watch your vlog on TV in the evening. Much better than normal programs. Nice tip for tightening up your tomato strings and you're not alone with slugs. Get plenty of rain and they're out in force! If I get poor quality compost I force it through a small sieve to make it finer and more workable for seed trays plus you can remove any larger unwanted bits.

🪰 My four Calendula plants had numerous stalks that were smothered in black fly. Today I noticed that hoverfly were encircling half of the Calendula, both of which were now clear of the fly mess! Now I need them to move across to the other pair of plants. As I was dead heading some of the flowers I even found Mrs 🐞 patrolling amidst the black fly, so I left her to it. Go grrl!

Morning Jessie and mom hope everyone is doing well. I do onion sets because I’m too lazy to faf about with tiny seedlings. 😂😂 I remember Tony C Smith did the same put up lovely net and then found he’d trapped a few moths. Still praying for rain here not only for the garden but forest fires are running rampant. Do you think you will make a bigger poly tunnel in the future, you seem to utilize it a lot. I know in Victorian times they would lay entire seaweed plants between strawberry plants to ward off slugs and fertilize. 🤮🤢 on the seed compost. Everything looks fantastic and pm me if you want some poppy seeds. Thank you for sharing ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe all

Those Atomic Grape tomatoes take forever to ripen. If this is your first attempt then I would suggest they have to have a bit of give in the flesh, be fully coloured and look for fine red stripes in the flesh before harvest. Could be in for a long wait this year. Worth it apparently. They are on my list for next year. Great episode as always. Closing in on 14K! Nice.

Jessie you got me inspired with your vlogs. So for the first time ever in my gardening career, I will be doing succession sowing and see how it goes. Also, I remember the very first year when I moved from a urban gardening on my tiny balcony to a plot gardening, the plot was infested with slugs. I very literally cried of broken heart when the slugs destroyed the entire lettuce and broccoli bed over night. It was even hard to walk the slugs were everywhere... The only solution that helped saving the leftover crop was beer. Absolute nightmare. Anyhow... my fall seeds just arrived and I realized that I ordered some more pretty lettuce that I just can live without and as it turned I already had it in my stash :) The good thing is that you can never have too much lettuce. I will be eating a lot Merveille de quatre saisons this year ;)

Love your little „windy sticks“ and how/why you use them. I use them as well, but rarely to tighten, more to loosen the string. When my tomatoes hit the roof I cut off lower leaves and lower the whole plant to the ground so it can continue growing. I never realized it would help when the knot at the bottom starts slipping up (I don’t bury it because I’m afraid it will rot) so it will definitely make that easier

    • @JessieatPlot37
      @JessieatPlot37  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The rotting off thing is not something I’d really considered before because I’ve always used Nutscene natural string but I bought something else this year and I think that’s what’s going to happen. So I’ve started re-anchoring it!

I knew this would be a excellent vlog before I watched it and it didn't disappoint( it never does with Jessie's video's). My onions from sets were disappointing because they were much the same size as when I put them in. The shallots were much the same so I have decided this autumn and next season I won't be growing onions/shallots but the garlic has done well so I will still grow them. I still have seeds to sow this month such as Black Radish, spring lettuce and other salad crops and my potatoes are doing well.

Does make you wonder how certain plants like brassicas manage to survive all of their attackers without intervention... I do have a random brassica that was sown when I spilled some carrot and onion and radish seeds together accidentally and decided to try plant them anyway in a spot and harvest any onions as spring onions... few of those survived the dry weather and later slug attacks. But the brassica is still alive along with one radish. We’ll see if it survives long enough to bring a harvest.
