Finally sorting out the Greenhouse and picking Peas in the rain || Plot 37 (Episode 63)

  • After the sad news last Tuesday, I have taken most of the week off from the allotment but we are back! And i finally managed to get the greenhouse sorted out ready for the melons and cucumbers! The main thing i needed to do was install trellis on the inside of the green house for the melons and cucumbers to grow up because they are climbers. I have made a pretty much permanent trellis 'shell' inside the greenhouse for them to climb up.
    Because the cucumbers like a little more shade than the melons, i am swapping the around this year and they will be planted in large pots on opposite sides of the house.
    The cucumber varieties i'm growing are Socrates (a small green skinned one) ( amzn.to/2UgfaqD ) And an italian one with a very thin skin called Manduria ( amzn.to/2SiqAcR ) and a Japanese white variety thats was given to me and so i'm not sure what its called!
    The melons are all Alvaro and were from Delfland Organics.
    The little green greenhouse clips i'm using are these ones: amzn.to/2SLxPKP
    We also do our first major picking of Peas (Hursts Greenshaft amzn.to/2Ugg1Yn ) and gorgeous yellow Mangetout called Golden Sweet ( amzn.to/3gNiQI8 ) which despite the rain, has made me feel quite summery!

    INSPIRATION: that is what you give to all of us. This old girl from the 🇺🇸 has been gardening for 50 years and has now planted borlotti beans, broad beans, Greek gigantes, & comfrey for the 1st time ever. Still looking for tree cabbages.

      Thanks Jen! Yeah, badgers are such Dark Horses! I remember when i was living in France, there was a huge drama because a badger had got into the chicken house and couldn't get out. It was charging around in there like a bull!
      A lot of the chickens were killed that day but i think i had assumed that she was in there looking for eggs and they were killed in the chaos rather than deliberately but... turns out i was wrong! Chickenhouse Mark 2 will be Badger proof!

    The melons I sowed from seed died in the cold weather in May when I brought them up to my unheated allotment greenhouse too early, thinking that May would be warm and sunny (which it wasn't). I bought some about a week or so ago from the garden centre called 'Honey Bun' canteloupe and planted them in a ridge of rotted manure topped with a layer of good fine tilth soil from the plot - they have rooted well because there is new growth already - I have trellised melons in the past, but other time I just let them scramble along the raised bed border in my largest greenhouse (8ft x 12ft) which does have a high roof. I hope to get at least a few melons from 3 plants. I do enjoy your vlogs - especially as I live on my own.

    • @JessieatPlot37

    Loss is always difficult. Sadly, one way or another, our furred and feathered friends generally meet their last days whether we are ready for it or not. Take a deep breath, mourn, and find new babies to love. Its all you CAN do. Just review the hen house before moving new residents in. That badger now knows how to get into the old one and will get in again if you don't change the structure.

    • @JessieatPlot37
      @JessieatPlot37  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Linda, yeah. We have quite a bit of work to do on the henhouse before we will think about any new feathers move in! Maintenance that was tricky while the girls were living in there but also now, like you say, badger-proofing. We are going to completely replace the door and have it bolted top and bottom among other things. Big job! But yeah, wouldn't consider getting more hens without a complete safety recheck!

    I really don't like working with that New Horizon compost. It's been OK as a cheap way of filling up some big containers but horrible for potting up smaller plants - just too lumpy and fibrous. I've been sieving it and mixing 50/50 with some Sylvagrow that I had left over just to make it more usable. I think it would really put a lot of casual gardeners off moving to peat free if that was there first experience of it. The grey colour and odd smell doesn't help either.

    So much heavy rain the last days in hampshire that the carrots in my raised beds gave "picked themselves" as the tops have topple over the side and pulled carrots out of the ground. Not wasted, they’re tender and sliced up in our salads. Peas were very reluctant to take off in the sold dry spring, going mad now have with masses of pods, just waiting for the peas to swell up. Luckily the peas haven’t broken, used combinations of metal and plastic trellis, twiggy sticks from apples, pears, beech and forsythia and they seem well supported. Your peas look amazing. Main crop onions are bolting, so pulling and using fresh as spring onions, leaving our spring onions to get bigger, hope we still have enough main croppers to last the winter. Still have leeks in pots to find space for. There’s always something.

      @JessieatPlot37  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is always something Tony! My garlic is in a right state and a couple of my shallots have bolted too! We have definitely had some challenging weather so far haven't we!!

    • @tonyspencer2429
      @tonyspencer2429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it has been a challenge everywhere in the plot: strawberries pit on little green growth resulting in low yields and now going mildew, sweet corn only half germinated in root trainers, survivors planted out in March didn’t move for a month, the new showings didn’t go out until May (the March ones are now only 18” high and about to flower! Peas, again half never germinated, so I resowed the gaps, now the peas are 4ft tall, masses of mange touts but the peas aren’t swelling; French beans are a disaster but runner beans in a sheltered corner survived the slugs and flowering this week. Still, picking plenty of carrot twinnings, salad leaves and herbs are brilliant, just starting to get raspberries, the loganberries and blackberries are smothered in green fruit, so much promise there, alpine strawberries have been fantastic for a month now, and for the last week we've been getting a couple of tomatoes a day, with 5 varieties out there we should start getting plenty soon. My wife won’t let me have chickens or bees, which is fair enough, but I did allow a swarm to settle under one of the old sheds, which gave me lots of bees for a while, but I think they drowned in all that rain last week, oh well. I hope you can replace your girls when you feel it's safe to.

    Ah Jess darlin’ - so good to see you. You have had a huge shock, taking time to yourself is perfectly understandable and encouraged. Good to see your smile and humor and as always, a rundown of what’s being sown, planted, strung up, harvested, cooked and eaten! Much relief to hear that you have a plan for “moorhens”. Your vlog is like no other and is more than just about gardening, yours is a life story. You share so much with us and we adore and support you (and mum) every way possible. I can’t tell you how much I’ve learned from your methods. Cooking vids? YES! Take good care, as always and see you Thursday. PS: I just planted out my one and only bush-baby watermelon. xo ♥️

    Curse the badger. 🤬. I hope you get more chickens soon; you give them such a good life. You do a really good job with these videos. Of course, I love the content but today, for some reason, I really paid attention to all of the different camera angles/positions. That must take a lot of time. Mostly, when I watch something, I give zero thought to how it is filmed but in the beginning, when you were getting ready to leave the house, I felt like I was there with you getting all of the plants packed up and waiting for you to put your coat on 😂. And then I thought, my god, it must have taken you forever to get out of the house with all of the filming. 😂. Even in the green house… great continuity!

    It great when you get the green house planted up. I would worry with that trellis only being secured at the top that if the door is open and it’s windy, it could start flapping and smash the glass. Can you tie it into one of the down pieces of the frame too? Love that garden centre you went to. We used to have a proper old fashioned DIY shop that sold stuff by the Kg and also sold netting and alike by the meter great for bolts nuts etc too. But now they have stopped selling it all loose and have gone to standard boxes of and it’s a lot more expensive.

    • @JessieatPlot37
      @JessieatPlot37  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, i've gone round and secured the trellis to the cross slates just yesterday! I had to secure the cross pieces first because one of them had come loose! Always something!
      Ah, its such a shame isn't it?! i used to work in the most wonderful old fashioned place (a bit like Chapmans but up in town) and we bagged everything up. Was excellent value for the customers, as well as being less packaging and also great profit for us because we could buy in bulk... but times have changed. They too now only sell the pre-packed stuff. Very sad. More expensive for the customer, the business and the planet... but i guess its easier for them, less messy and doesn't require a member of staff to bag everything up. Still a shame though, especially when so many 're-fill stores' are starting to open up! I really think its a crazy time to be taking steps backwards like so many of the independent garden centres and hardware shops are doing... oh, sorry! thats turned into a but of a rant. Sorry Rusty!

      Hmm, i had thought about that back when we had our first chickens! But a guy a few plots over attempted to protect his sweetcorn with something like that and they just marched straight through it... maybe his was a bit weak though!!

    • @pamelamurphy9468
      @pamelamurphy9468 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like it may have been on the weak side. We have to use strong volts because we’re dealing with coyotes, dogs, bobcats, skunks, raccoons and every so often bear and mountain lion. You want it strong enough that it gives them a good jolt the first time they try it. You might check with your county agriculture department, or the equivalent, to see what they suggest you use. Good luck, it’s a battle you can win.

Question about your Peas ... I planted some tall telephone after your comments for some autumn peas here in NZ and they got battered by the wind. Have you ever trimmed them below the broken bend, do they resprout? I didnt I just went with floppy pea plants cause they had already out grown the netting trellis they had.

    Great vlog as always, but what are your plans for the winter and insulating the greenhouse? presumably getting the bubble wrap behind the trellises in place would be a struggle. You could maybe look at attaching hooks to the bamboo cane so the trellis can be detached easily whilst being secure during the summer.
