In Ireland two Irish parents woke up their two 6 year old kids and told them they had school (we are one of the country's that are lockdown entirely) so the poor children I also thought this let's play was a joke as well

When you think about it super Mario land is such a strange change for Mario, no fire flowers, one ups are hearts, the song that plays when you get the invincibility Star is different, it’s surreal compared to what we are used to
the 1-up being a heart is a limitation of the game being monochromatic. You can't very easily distinguish 1-up mushrooms from regular mushrooms, after all. Same thing happened with Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Land
It's the Zelda 2 effect. It seems off-formula now, but at the time, there was no formula. Side note: everyone seems to notice the star theme, but the music choice that always stood out to me was "Joy to the World" as the castle theme...
It makes sense--he's not in the Mushroom Kingdom anymore. Subcon also had different powerups. No, what's weird is playing SML2 with Mario's own land and castle. Maybe he got his own mini kingdom after SMB3? Maybe it made him royalty so he could marry Peach?

Being a little kid who played this about as well as you played Superstar Saga when you were little, it took me a YEAR to beat this game! I remember getting a game over in 4-2 and bursting into tears because without a save feature I had to start all over again. Victory was so sweet, however. This was done as an April Fools' joke and I agree on the content of the game being light and the mechanics being weird, but I'm actually really happy you did a let's play of this game, because it was the first video game that I ever had a chance to play or see that wasn't "edutainment", so despite its general mediocrity, it still holds a special place in my heart. I went on a Binge Watch of all of Emile's Let's Plays. I tell ya...this series...it was such an amazing journey! Almost as good as Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
This game will always remain in my heart as the first video game I ever played on my dad's gameboy. It felt so much longer as a kid (probably because I sucked, but cut me some slack, I was 4) and I remember it took me weeks before I finished it for the first time. That's probably why I knew a lot of the earlier secrets (like the elevators and the invisible floor) but could hardly remember 4-2. In retrospect, it's a perfect portable game for the time: short levels, enjoyable gameplay and you're never really that far set back if you have to turn it off.
Emile, all jokes aside, I think you should do more mini-Lets plays. Its like a tiny little video that not only covers an entire game, but gives us our daily dose of Chuggaa!

I think this game can be best summed up as "Launch title for the GameBoy". It's simplistic, it's something of an oddity in its franchise, but it was something that you could point to and say "I want a GameBoy because portable Mario".
For a game so light on content, it crazy how this game not only gave us Daisy, but indirectly also Wario and Waluigi, all three of whom are now staple characters of the franchise
Mentioned this earlier, did you forget to mention the Upside-Down Piranha Plants? They give a higher score when killed and even Viridi acknowledges them as a separate species in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Not sure if you just mentioned them and I never noticed; just making sure.
April fools jokes aside, I think it actually would be pretty cool to do small games during long breaks between video. It would give you the chance to show off games that you couldn't really play otherwise due to being short.
There's also something "special" you can do in coin rooms that have the exit pipe in the upper-right and two breakable blocks below it. As big Mario, break both blocks, then do a lunge under the pipe (down+left+A). If done correctly, Mario will slide under the pipe, but exit like normal. It's fun.

April fools jokes aside, I think it actually would be pretty cool to do small games during long breaks between video. It would give you the chance to show off games that you couldn't really play otherwise due to being short.

There's also something "special" you can do in coin rooms that have the exit pipe in the upper-right and two breakable blocks below it. As big Mario, break both blocks, then do a lunge under the pipe (down+left+A). If done correctly, Mario will slide under the pipe, but exit like normal. It's fun.
I got really confused when I saw this yesterday. Honestly, I love how this turned out. It's the perfect game to make into a 1 episode series.
