This story made my cry! The biological father who is half Guinea-Bissau half Portuguese didn’t know his own father neither because he was a Portuguese soldier who fought in Guinea-Bissau. So Luke’s journey actually brought closure to two generations because now Carlos also knows where he comes from.

I have a bio father and a step-father. My step-father came into my life when I was 5. He is more of a dad to me than my bio father was and always treated me like his daughter.

They knew. It's more about how people love to live in denial. The mother definitely knew. And dad was passive and also in denial. Of course son had many "hints" from strangers that's why he finally did a DNA test. Many friends and relatives around them like mother's friend who went on vacation with her also knew and lived in collusion with the lies. Humans are very interesting. Have you ever seen the documentary Little White Lie by Lacey Schwartz? This is one of many stories that continue to be uncovered because of modern DNA testing

reminds me of the Call the Midwife episode with the white couple. The dad was sterile. The mom gave birth to a brown baby. The dad was like this is the most beautiful baby in the world! He accepted the kid as his, happy, because technically he was sterile. The miracle of life!

Devastated for Luke’s dad (who clearly wasn’t okay since he didn’t participate in this segment, couldn’t even face the camera, and likely feels like he’s lost the son he loved and raised for more than 2 decades).
He always knew and he's likely relieved that his son isn't gay. Not saying there's anything wrong with being gay. There isn't, but we as a society are not quite to the point where if the ability to choose was an option, most wouldn't care.

I'm sure the DNA matches were the biggest contributor. It was a little weird how worried he was about the real DNA test when the case for Carlos was already built around that. If his name was Carlos, he has a network of DNA matches shared with Luke and worked at that specific bar 30 years ago, chances are high. The actual DNA test would be more of a formality, and would be unlikely to say anything else. Especially if he recalls having a fling with an English woman back then.

Bravo to Luke taking the opportunity to find out who he is.
This is why it’s so important to be honest right from the start. A friend of mine didn’t know she was adopted until her grandfather mentioned it to her when she was 8 years old. He thought her mother had told her, but it had been kept a secret. This has impacted my friend’s whole life in many ways and it could all have been very different if her mother and father had had the courage to be straight with her from a very young age. So, if you take anything from this story please let it be that the old saying “honesty is the best policy” is hugely important in such cases.
the issue is that adoption parents don't seem to know how to tell the child(ren) that they are adopted...out of fear the children will be asking for real parents....just my opinion.
@@timookello3822 It is easy if it is done right from the earliest age the child can understand. I have an adoptee in my extended family and the adoptive parents they did that.
@@barnowl.just because your extended family worked out that way doesn’t mean it work for all. Really depends on the child / person. This guy seems to have took it within his stride. He’s dealt with it as an adult and clearly didn’t impact him as a child.

Your Daddy that raised you is still your Dad sweetheart. This happened to my Mama. I didn't even know the truth until I was an adult. I did notice she was darker than my Aunt and Uncle though, but never questioned it. But, my Gramps was still my Gramps and he knew the whole time. They just never told my Mama until well into adulthood. My Mama decided not to even look for her bio dad out of respect for my Gramps being the greatest Dad ever. I wish you the best, love. To me he just looked like a regular light skinned black man you'd see in America - whether that be non mixed, mixed, or afro latino, or from the caribbean - but he in no way, shape, or form looks "100% english". Im just baffled he never questioned his parents backgrounds

What we see in others is not always what others see in themselves. He grew up in a white family, and everyday they reinforced that he was their child, family member. And his identify formed from there. It's not completely far fetched that he didn't jump to the conclusion that he was instead mixed.
His dad must have really wanted a child, because if he'd had any doubt he would have seen that the baby wasn't his immediately.

I remember playing with a kid as a child that belived he was white but very visibly mixed. Identity is a an important part of our lives and the true always come out in the end
Me too. I was much older than the little kid who liked tagging along with my cousin and I. He had blond hair and blue eyes with olive skin but had two light skinned Black parents. I guess DNA from one of them was of a white person in their family tree somewhere which isn’t uncommon in the south. Anyways, I would purposely ask the kid what color he was, and he’d say white everyone 😂. I thought it was pretty hilarious. I asked him why he thought that and he would hold up his hands and widen his eyes to show me they were blue as the ocean. I lost touched. It’s been years. He should be a young adult now. I’d sure ask him again if we were to ever meat. 😂
We had an Indian family who lived next to us for about 4 years and their youngest was a blue eyed blonde girl who would tell my daughter all about how she's Indian. Her dad later told me that she was adopted from Ukraine and they were waiting until she was 18 to tell her. I was thinking um sir everyone else will tell her before you then 🥴🥴

I used to work with adopting families, and every single word you have uttered here is something I have heard adopting parents and children who didn't know they were adopted say. Of *course* you feel like an imposter! People have told you lies! And important part of you--your history--was wrong. You are not alone. I have noticed that a lot of people raised in certain homes do not see certain things.
I watched a documentary about a similar situation, and the woman said it basically came down to her parents choosing denial; her mother in denial about there being proof of her cheating on her husband ( a child) and her father not even questioning it because it would mean facing the fact that his wife cheated on him. And because everyone she grew up with was all white, they didn’t question it; her parents always said it was just family genes. It wasn’t until the woman herself started dating a mixed race boy in high school, who flat out said to her, you know you’re Black right, that it really all came out. It’s just crazy what people can convince themselves of.
Chimamanda Ngozi is a female black nigerian writer, living in america. She came to america to have her colege/university education. She said only at that time found out she is black.

His mother did this to protect her own interests. The bio Dad seems interested in knowing him. Imagine how his life would have been learning also the Portuguese and Guinean culture. He would have had more people to love him.

And would you consider, Guineans, Somalis or Ethiopians as black people? Well they are and 3/4 of their populations have "soft" and "curly" hair. Furthermore, did you watch the show, his father is mixed black, some mixed people might come out looking white and blue eyes but then end up with afro type 4 hair! I know quite a few mixed people and some of them have little wars with their combs, as it doesn't just slide through!

Crazy how the mom just never said a single thing until he got his dna tested. Wrong for everyone involved and for what? She didn’t even get away with it. This is definitely bittersweet.
The mum would have known who the dad really was. The fact that she kept this from her son, and didn’t seem all that bothered in the video (no tears at all just a pat on the head and a half arsed apology), just makes me feel so gutted and disappointed. Poor guy having to go through this. I hope he and Carlos get some healing ❤️🩹
The problem is, this all happened before DNA. So nobody knew that in Luke's lifetime, it would be something he could find out, and by that time, telling him was too late. This is so common you have no idea, I and several friends were wild teens, our kids fathers are assumed to be correct. And they're not unhappy in their lives because they don't know. It was a very different time. I don't think the time we live in now is very healthy. Technology is horrible and has ruined so much of life. DNA turns otherwise happy lives upside down. This case is different because the child is biracial but most cases are not biracial and people just never know it's not their dad.
@@friedrice7727 I’m not sure why you’d necessarily need DNA. You’d know based on who you slept with and the rough time period around when you conceived. Surely you would know which men you’ve slept with and therefore you would know that out of them one of those men would be the real father. From the looks of things she knew but just didn’t want contact with her son’s father as it was a one night stand.

I don't think it had anything to do with not wanting to upset her son or her husband. It was about covering up her cheating, and the lies she told about her pregnancy.

I had a coworker who was half black but she looked full white it does happen
But that’s because she has white ancestry like every African American (if she is). Statistically, that makes sense. His denial is the inverse of that and far more puzzling.
African Americans have on average 25% European DNA so that makes sense if they have one fully white parent and look more white. My friend is half black and her husband is white, one of her kiddos looks like a white child with curly hair and her daughter has much darker features but straight hair. DNA is so cool.

I can only assume he grew up in an area that is not multi-cultural because if he grew up in a city like London he would have heard comments about him looking mixed race throughout the years.
If he lived in an all white area and his mum and the rest of the family ‘hid’ it from him then I can see how he didn’t figure this out for himself before now.
Sometimes the secret is to protect the child against racism. Ironically, he could have even been taught racism in his community.

This is bittersweet as a viewer. I’m honored to have this shared with us & I’m happy for the young man & his biological dad. It’s clear from the childhood family photos that he tans very well & that there were obvious signs for the parents; most kids would need to see more to notice; like this guy I lose any color in the winter; like my grandmother; but I tan much, much more. I too had episodes once I moved; where people questioned my heritage; in my case; asking me if I was Spanish or Latino; being southern Black; I knew were were mixed including indigenous. Imagine my surprise to find out a family secret…yes; Latino. So I really wanted to hear more of this story. Is his da; ok with the reveal? He had to know from the time his son was young; the mom; sorta indicated that. I hope all is well & that there is more revealed to the story. It’s comforting realizing that there are so many people with mixed ethnic heritages out there! It hopefully makes us less polarized. Blessed be the parents that love the children in their lives & don’t reject children. His first dad needs huge pats on the back!
With DNA tests out there some men are finding out that they are fathers of an adult child they didn't know existed. A friend of mine had this happen. Thankfully, her biological father was overjoyed to meet her & have her join his family. The biological mother never told him that she had gotten pregnant & gave her up for adoption & refused to meet with her.
There was lots of stigma being a single parent, due to your relationship falling apart, let alone an unmarried mother right up until the mid-1990s in the UK.
Some women, particularly if they were teenagers, never got over how they were made to feel getting pregnant, giving birth in secret and then being made to give up their baby.
My godmother was forced to give up her eldest child for this reason in the 1960s. Luckily they met each other before she died.
Another now deceased friend in the early 1970s got help from the church and Shelter to keep her child and later married a guy who adopted the child. Meanwhile her family made plans to take the child abroad and be given to a childless married relative. The actual child's bio-father knew she was pregnant but due to his status was not allowed to stay in the UK. He also would not want the child brought up in his own country due to the conditions at the time.
In the 1980s I had a headteacher who tried to kick me and other pupils out of her primary school as our parents were divorced or separated. Unfortunately for her my dad then mum refused to put up with her crap. She backed down with me as she risked not retiring with her pension.
Finally in the 1990s the Tory government launched their back to basics campaign all about families with married parents, whilst cheating on their own wives and fathering children with their mistresses.

I understand his reaction fully. I found out at 15 that the man I knew as my father, was not! Unfortunately, due to mother, who did have all his details but would not disclose them, I was never told everything until after my birth father was dead. I was devastated and it has been with me all my life since. It's part of human nature to want to know the truth in this matter.
My best friend's mother was given up; when she contacted her birth mother, she told her to never contact her. Of course, the scars of that rejection trickled down through the family, and my friend suffered for it. She killed herself in 2011. I miss her so much.

I took a My Heritage DNA test and I got English 53% Azores Islands Portugal 26.4 % Irish Scottish Welsh 8.9 % Scandinavian 7.6 % East European 4.1 % I just met my dad and I am 48 years old.
The African result is always the most shocking one despite what the mirror has been saying all along.

I'm a black man (Nigerian). As a MAN I feel heartbreak for the English dad. Your own seed legacy is no more. For this reason I hope he has other kids. Props to Luke for handling everything with so much grace and looks like he'll get two dads out of this. The mother was foul. Not just the initial bad decision, but not being transparent all these years.
The father who raised him may have known - we didn't get the full story, only a little of it.

Im adopted and never met my biological parents either. Even though my parents also explained it to me since 3 or 4 and we're very good parents. I grew up with a big why and what if in my head.
Then , if you wish, you can begin a search as other adoptees do.
I'm African and believe me, a lot of grandmas, mom's and daughter sofer because of ultramen that left them there abandon. So I know what is father and him feel it, thank you for this document ❤

Feeling like an imposter is common even for people who are fully aware of their ethnicity but didn’t grow up around the culture. It’s an identity thing.
This must have been so shocking and upsetting to him. Probably makes him want to rethink his entire life. But I hope instead of spiraling, he takes this opportunity to understand himself and his experiences in a new light. Esp since the change is to mostly non-white. Good luck to him!

I have had the same experience, not the racial aspect but knew my dad wasn’t my real dad , he treated me different to my siblings and caused me emotional damage!
I did a dna test at 44 years old to free myself from the ????s, you have to do what’s best for you to heal and know yourself!
I’ve never had a apology from my parents just more rejection,silence,denial and narcissistic behavior!

I am from Guine-Bissau and I live in the U.K. i have spent Xmas and New Year Eve 2023 there. I just broke down in tears, our country is very small but one of the most loving people. We have beautiful islands, lots of fish and seafood. ❤❤❤

A true father is so much more than biological DNA. Luke was raised by his real dad, who cared, nurtured &, loved him from infancy. Luke looks mixed race, I think his dad might have suspected but denied or deliberately ignored it choosing instead to love unconditionally.
His mom knows she wrong. She wanted her “ family” never considering the damage it would do. That’s toxic and selfish.
His baby pictures show he is mixed with black ancestry, his biological father doesn't look Portuguese, he does resembles a person of African ancestry!

Just a possibility????? Heck naw, she KNEW who the father was. That man looks visibly mixed. Look at his hair as a youngster. Look at his nose and lips. Good grief. I'm sure that very many people in this young man's life already strongly suspected his mixed heritage throughout the years.

Great question. People do it all the time. I got a background check a few years ago and when I received the results I saw "white". I am very clearly not white and yet someone decided to put me down as white. I don't understand.
