Use whatever basil…. But you must try it with pork belly. But into squares about 1/4 inch x 1 inch and cooked until a bit crispy but still soft. That’s how my dad used to make it for us when we were kids and it’s better than any restaurant or street vendor I’ve ever had. As an aside he usually made it with lemon basil because that’s just what we grew and is the most common kind in my home country.

When chopping onions or shallots it you go pole to pole in strips you won't burn eyes. But if you need to chop or slice in rings put a bowl of cold water beside you or run your faucet if you are near the water will capture the fumes and you won't have burning eyes. It works!!!!

Italian Basil still tastes legit. I agree 100%. my wife bummed out when I made 3-cup chicken with it, but she still ate it happily. haha.

When I was in the UK, I always used Italian basil as a substitute for holy basil. I find it tastes more similar to holy basil than Thai basil.

But I agree with you. Any basils will make this dish taste good.

The Woks of Life, I love your channel because alot of your recipes are very nostalgic to me. I worked and served many people at the Rainbow Chinese Restaurant similar recipes. Many happy customers. Rice is life. Food is life. Yes! Basil. Yes food! Yes your family! Yes your recipes. Yes! Yes! Yes! I've never read a bad recipe or seen a better recipe channel on the internet. Not bullshit.

As I am living in Thailand for years, I would say Thais pound red bird's eye chillis , Thai garlic in a mortar and pestle which gives more aroma. The amount of chillies and garlic is 1:1.
Some add oyster sauce and dark soy source into it. Many basil dishes could be done with other meat products such as squid, crispy pork, century egg, tofu, mushroom. The best Thai basil is the red one. The leaves must be small and they have tinny hair, and the best month is winter and summer. The real Thai Pad Krapow dish has more than 10-15 in ingredients; however, the street food shops in Thailand just make it so simple but still taste good. I cannot expose all the ingredients because Cambodia will copy and accuse Thais as a thief stealing from them. So sorry.

I’m growing Thai basil in my garden. It grows pretty decent here in southern FL. You’re right, it has a bit of a licorice taste. I’m gonna try this recipe. I’m always looking for quick, on pan meals for week nights.

It's best with pork or beef. Chicken is the healthier way. I don't know where she lives but if you plant basil, it will grow out of control. It will turn into a giant bush. Thai basil or Italian basil. They are so easy to grow, it's insane.

I saw at least 3 additional forms of protein. I believe the recipe is tasty, minus the insects and other things from the basil she did not properly clean. You cannot eat at everybody's house!

You can whack the basil a few times on the counter top to check for dirt and critters, but you can’t wash it- you’ll lose essential oils.

Looks good. I add fresh green beans, and serve it with a Thai-fried egg. Chopped chilies and garlic in fish sauce is good to drizzle on top. You can also add fresh mint to change the herbal flavor.
