    • @pantster9855
      @pantster9855 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think the team probably must feel a bit guilty that on a 4km course, which takes minutes to drive, no one checked it was safe before they raced on it. Big Mag said the road was covered in oil! Can't blame Alex for that, she was on the front, racing for a life changing contract and first to hit the oil, she didn't stand a chance. It could have been much worse

    It is clear zwift numbers aren't enough, riders need bike handling and race experience and nous

    • @pantster9855
      @pantster9855 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      and, to be fair they should expect the courses are safe and have been checked beforehand. So much oil "I thought my car was leaking" isn't a good duty of care when they expect riders to give everything for the chance of a life changing contract

    • @irvhh143
      @irvhh143 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was the issue last year. This format is too compressed.Really, they should be working with the young riders for 2 or 3 years. Everything comes down to a single race. A rider might be having an off day or make a bad decision due to pressure. Chiara is strong but still learning bike handling and tactics. Maybe a year of racing would see a big improvement, or maybe she'll never get it.
      The race with novices on open roads is high risk, but this is how it is. All cyclists and runners at every level must practice on open roads.

    • @howarddale3782

      @pantster9855 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@howarddale3782 official races in the U.K. require prior notice and marshalls but this wouldn’t
      But no don’t think it quite works really. You can’t have a dream job on the line then say “go careful” as you can see they cut across the wrong side of the road etc. the first female race even went through a town where Mag said careful at the stop sign. Legally you have to STOP at a stop sign. I actually live in Calp and know these roads, you can easily use both sides the roads but there’s so many better roads

  • @DrDeepstack
    @DrDeepstack ปีที่แล้ว +12

  • @jasongardiner7455
    @jasongardiner7455 ปีที่แล้ว +95

    I understand 'racing' on open roads as a pro rider while training, or even on a Sunday club ride for a bit of fun. To 'race' on open and fast roads like those while fighting for a potential pro contract is asking for trouble.
    I was really enjoying this series up until now. The risk of running stop signs, crossing solid white lines and at times riding towards oncoming traffic is ridiculous. Poor decision for whoever organised this session, hopefully lessons are learnt.

    • @oldtwinsna8347
      @oldtwinsna8347 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Have to agree. I was nervous even before the crashes with them constantly crossing the center line. This made me lose some respect for GCN to allow this stuff to happen. Eric Minn, CEO of Zwift, needs to pull rank here and implement changes for this program immediately.

    • @pl4free
      @pl4free ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, this is horrible and a very poor example for the young people watching this series. Real let-down. The women's team also payed a high price for this foolish idead. A broken wrist is serious and it even ended a couple of pro's careers...

    • @andyhodge9703
      @andyhodge9703 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree , but to attack the way she did by basically riding into the rider causing them to crash was down to inexperience to the point of not having a clue about how to race on the road . She at least is clearly not ready to be doing this .

    • @ellismccoy
      @ellismccoy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andyhodge9703 I totally agree that it was crazy allowing them to ride on the wrong side of the road around corners etc. But the first crash was just a racing incident. Yeah Alex veered into her somewhat, but it's as much Chiara's fault not holding onto her bars properly. Shit happens and in that case I don't think it was down to Alex being "inexperienced", she's got 1000% more race experience than the other two.

    • @peterslegers6121
      @peterslegers6121 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andyhodge9703 Correction: She wasn't at fault in the first incident. Alex was hugging the middle line, which is the end of the road. Chiara moved towards the middle, then a bit straight, then closed the gap entirely. That's not predictable behaviour for the riders behind or next to her. Therefore a racing incident. It does show that Chiara wasn't aware that Alex was overtaking her.

    Love the Zwift Academy Finals, I've been really looking forward to it after last year's competition. I found the races in this episode super exciting. If I have one slight criticism it's that you don't devote enough screen time to getting to know the riders, or their thoughts in the aftermath of the challenges. For all the seriousness of the competition for the finalists, from a storytelling perspective this format is effectively reality TV. If there's one thing reality TV is good at, it's making you care and root for the participants.

    • @Columbia6
      @Columbia6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I work in the industry of English language education, yes it is huge in many countries. Non-natives learn English because it opens doors to employment and travel, but I think the biggest reason is the pervasiveness of English-language TV shows and movies. Like if you use TH-cam, you will want to be able to understand English because of the content out there. I spoke to one guy from Saudi Arabia who spoke with a perfect British accent, he told me he was a terrible student but loved watching UK TV. In countries where foreign media is blocked or restricted, like China where I currently live, people's English is generally dreadful.

      Honestly, they didn't do so bad. The attack on the climb was circumstantial, one tried to keep it in their side of the road because of traffic as the other got wider. And the second, again because of traffic and having to keep the right lane offered a tighter line to negociate and with the oil involved, that appeared innevitable.
      If you removed traffic from the equation, I believe those two incidents would not have happened.

    • @huntos83

      It’s usually a case of doing pretty much what was happening in the girls race, one rider attacks and the other team members hold back, the pro can’t just let the lone rider get away to the finish so is forced to close the gap and use up energy. Then immediately when they have closed the gap one of the other team members should make an attack off the front and the same thing happens again and again until the pro is too tired to compete.
      Essentially the amateurs only have to attack once in every 3 times, while the pro has to attack every time to close the gap.

    • @newttella1043
      @newttella1043 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see it as similar tactics as crit race where one rider (MvDP) os isolated without team mates. Take turns attacking him. Just as MvDP closes the gap, next guy attacks. But... as you saw the road, short race distance, and wind together worked as an extra team mate to MvDP and he was able to hold 70kph. Too difficult to attack at 70kph when only two guys are working.

    The team chose that men's course for a reason, to make it close and give vdp a good chance. It would be very difficult to beat him on such a short fast run. I think they were a bit timid though, they should have been a bit quicker with the 1-2s straight from the start but the rider behind took too long to go. But Lucas pretty much ruined it for the others. He really needed to pull his way and come over the top a few times, the move doesn't even have to stick just getting the 1-2-3 going quickly, but he just can't hold the wheels. He should have gone instead of Cooper. To me he's clearly the weaker rider but I guess the judges thought Cooper has had his chance twice now. It was clearly hard and Luca and jasper done well with what they could do. The individual mens race was timid too, Luca should have gone straight from the off and really pushed jasper hard. If he's still on the wheel towards the end, back off and sit behind him, they should have ignored Lucas completely but kept looking back. Luca will win tomorrow (and probably place top 10 on Strava) and win overall most likely, japser is very good too but not the same type of rider. I think they'd rather have a Luca type climber as with Jay Vine. Luca especially looks so calm and fit after the races, he's definitely the fittest guy with the best potential. Hope the girls are OK, tough crashes. Them roads can be very slippery in Spain, and that bend looked fast, quite easy to overcook and tap the brakes on an outside bend. 1st crash was total accident really.
