    I agree Kermode is a proper reviewer and he knows when a movie is bad and he will say it. Trouble is when it comes to comedies these days the humor is so silly and just lazy and they always seem to rely on celeb-cameos and you're expected to think they're great.

    @Bassbait When I said 'remembered as being forgettable' I was indulging in a paradoxical neologism. Its like saying 'to know him is to hardly know him at all' when your describing a forgettable person, or even an enigmatic person I suppose. I was basically saying from my limited exposure to the film, same as your self, it did not seem funny to me. It was too obvious and they seemed to set up obvious gags and then they fell short constantly. Mike Tyson being an occasional exception.

    Goes to show you that comedy, aside from slapstick, is the least universal movie genre. It will fall flat if you have any disconnect from the subject matter. In this case Kermode's view of fun (a solo stag night?? wtf) and perhaps the culture class of being british (i.e., not 'merrican) made this movie totally unfunny to him. I found it one of the most funny movies I've seen recently.

    • @19RaxR91
      @19RaxR91 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @TulseLuper & @Videodrome24 Also Kick-Ass, In The Loop, Cemetary Junction, Shaun of the Dead, Dr Strangelove, Buster Keaton... The man has a sense of humour. He just doesn't hold with the current Apatow/Sandler/Rogen style strain of bawdy lad's humour running through mainstream comedy and Ican totally see where he's coming from, even if my tolerance for that sort of thing is a little more open than his (I liked the Hangover and Superbad, for example).

    Looking back at The Hangover I still think it’s a classic. It’s dumb bro humour and when I was 12 it was hilarious but it still holds up as a well made comedy. Each person has their own opinion but I think the film has loads going for it. Why can’t we laugh at the dumb characters doing dumb shiz? It’s a leave your brain at the door film.

    @molly0000000s I agree the actual film itself is mindless. Consequently it is forgettable and will be remembered as such. But it comes out of a stable of comedy films reviewed by Mark Kermode which have a very similar sense of humour even if the end result is a higher standard than the Hangover, films like Pineapple Express and Step brothers, which got fairly negative Kermode reviews. I know its subjective but its just the old style Laurel and Hardy style humour with a modern twist.

    Mark Kermode's attitude towards what is viewed as 'misogyny' is actually rather old fashioned. Its an old 'alternative' idea he is still keeping strong whereas most people these days find much humour in previously sexist notions and treat them ironically for amusment. Its interesting that he condemns misogyny but defends his own misanthropy almost equally virulantly. Having said that I do agree, Vegas is the end of the world, 4am in Vegas looks just like a Ralph Steadman cartoon!

  • @Raymint

    @BelatedCommiseration But it's in a trend of films that generally see women as some sort of amusing aside, and therefore is a widespread target of fun. I think given that, Mark Kermode is right to be on guard and criticise it as such. I find it's pretty lazy to make a film based on jokes about that. Any mug, as Danny Dyer would say, could do that.

  • @BelatedCommiseration
    @BelatedCommiseration 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @molly0000000s But like I say, its an established trend in films going back to almost the dawn of cinema itself. You have two or more fools who make idiots of themselves comedically whilst also, in the best films, exposing social double standards and ridiculous customs. Look at the Marx brothers in Duck soup and their taunts of rich dowagers, or charlie chaplin in his interactons with women, and sometimes the brutes that harass them. The key fact to remember is that the apparent (cont)

    @badhead I think people are looking into these comedies waaaaaay to hard, its funny for the randomness, the tiger scene is funny, not because Im going, *MAN I REMEMBER WHEN I STOLE A TIGER WHILE DRUNK!* its because its sooooo random, thus over exaggerated which is why its funny, weird shit happens with a *boys* night out getting hammered, not the best movie but im not watching this movie for plot, or dramatic scenes, im watching it to laugh...

  • @BelatedCommiseration
    @BelatedCommiseration 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @molly0000000s To be fair I don't agree with mindless misogeny and sexism, but it can be seen as funny in a certain context. Like the film 'Kickass' for example i.e Nicholas Cage being a typical apples and pie smiling dad whilst at the same time teaching his little girl how to rip a guys head off. I was really making a point about Mark Kermodes attitude rather than the film, which I find forgettable, in as much as I believe Kermode can be overly concerned about political correctness at times.

    My mouth was agape the whole time, not because I was 'shocked' by the 'outrageousness' of the 'humour,' but because the movie grossed $200m in America.
    The top grossing comedies of years ago were things like Some Like It Hot and The Odd Couple. Ah f*ck it, even other annoying yet mega-grossing frat boy movies like Animal House and Porky's are extremely funny when compared to this Lincoln log.

    @ComandoPadentro So critics always have to review movies in such a way as to "respect the people behind it or those who might like them"? Some movies are just crass and offensive to the sensibilities of anyone who isn't an idiot. Take for instance the transformers series, are critics meant to give credit to michael bay simply because his trash is making money? Why have critics in the first place if they are meant to review movies with a twisted sense of relativism which actually is pretentious.

    Whilst I probably liked The Hangover a little more than Mark, I do agree that it is overrated and not particularly memorable IMO. The characters (to me) seemed rather bland and a lot of the situations were rather predictable. Films like American Pie or Superbad (which I know Mark doesn't like) and shows like The Inbetweeners are crude but they had funny, sympathetic characters that were, on the whole, more engaging and memorable. Entertaining film but thats it really.

    I think this hits the nail on the head for me too about my problems with Kermode's attitude. I've been aware of him for years but recently read his most recent book (which is very good although I agreed with him progressivlely less as it went on). On the back of that I've been watching a lot of his reviews. He's often insightful and funny but his condescension towards anyone that doesn't see things his way and his outdated 70's anti-male feminism grate on me a lot.
