Hey Bjørn, some people in sales also care about technical details. 😂 Good to hear you found someone who could spill the beans on some stuff.
Thanks Bjorn.
You are probably the most experienced EV tester.
I’ve watched you from the start and really appreciate your information.
It looks a lot better, but still no instruments, no HUD, no stalks, no shade for the glass roof in Summer.
Hopefully they will take your suggestions seriously.
Lets hope FSD isn't affected by the ninety-ninety rule, so that the lack of stalks would be worthwhile in a meaningful amount of time.
It almost certainly is, and absolutely won't. Actual autopilot/FSD has only been Next Year for what... 8(?) years now, Next Year will be the year! /s
@@mikewilliams6467Some years ago BMW had a press release, actually on April 1st, that told the people to use the blinker stalk as long as they have it... 🤣
By the way, was it a woman who invented the blinker stalk once upon the time?
Neue klasse BMW also NO instruments.
@@mikewilliams6467 Well, according to latest UNECE talks about autonomous driving regulations, next year might actually be a good year.
I don’t WANT a HUD. I have before and just find it distracting, especially at night.
I don’t want an instrument cluster in front of me.
(Night time forward vision with neither of these is just fabulous.)
I currently have stalks in my 2019, but really look forward to getting rid of them when I update to the Highland. (Waiting for the P!)
I own a Long Range and 100% approve these changes. I'd never buy a performance model, because I have absolutely no use for the performance features. More comfort and lower consumption ftw.
The lower consumption is mainly coming from the new tyres which have a significant reduced rolling resistance. Buy yourself a set of Hankook iON Evo and you will receive similar consumption with your existing M3 LR
To be fair the M3 Long Range is a very performant car too, and is more than enough for most people. I also really like these changes, except the removal of the stalks. Hell, they should rather have added a stalk for windscreen wipers instead of removing the two existing ones!
My revivifier would never buy a Performance either. Doc is scared witless by acceleration on Standard Range!
Have a Y LR - it in chill mode and do overtaking on 80” roads with confidence. Drivers car - a V6 with manual shift. Dayly commute/ long trip Tesla LR’s
@@fr3238Let's say it's winter and slightly snowing, then it's important to be able to manually operate the windscreen wipers. First of all you have to manually check that they aren't frozen. Then it's good if there is no ice in the wiping area.
Thank you for the double penetration video. I was moderately pissed at Tesla for not giving you the same treatment they gave to Carwow, for a simple reason. Carwow is NOT an EV channel. One could argue it is not even a CAR channel. It is entertainment pure and simple. But you are without a doubt the single most knowledgeable EV tester, period. If I were Tesla, I would have contacted the Bjorn Nylands in the world (not sure how many there are) and given THEM this kind of info, because the average Carwow subscriber simply does not understand, or even care, about technical stuff.
But it’s about appealing to the masses for Tesla right now. And Carwow has a lot of potential for reaching new customers to educate them on the vehicles and plant the seed for making the transition to EVs. Sure this channel is a lot more technical and niche and that’s great, but the average Joe isn’t going to be clicking on videos like this generally…
@@RyanKershaw not sure we are talking about the same Carwow. Matt never made a secret of the fact that he does not particularly like EVs. Carwow is mostly for petrolheads.
Tesla simply did as the other traditional carmakers are doing for a long time: exclusive first access to only a few selected youtubers by Country and number of subscribers. And probably ones that didn't criticise in past.
However you judge it, Carwow has 8.49M subscribers. But I wouldn't trust them for an impartial review 😏
@@Emaratilfy 8.5 million people who mostly watch improbable drag races. Bjorn’s average viewer is 100 times mor likely to own an EV or to be on the market for one. I found Bjorn’s channel when looking for our first EV and trusted him for both our EV purchases. You simply can’t find a better and more data driven channel.
Double penetration 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤😮🎉❤❤😂
Well done Bjorn. Glad to hear the open trunk lights on the diffuser provide adequate safety warning. I remember seeing extra lights behind the trunk-mounted tail lights on another car before. Seemed dumb to have redundant tail lights. Lotsa love to all especially Ammery with child #2 ❤❤❤
sexy buttons company has already said they’re working on stalks. Which is silly, but perhaps the only way I’d buy a highland. Indicators are bad, haptics not even real button is even worse. Drive mode also bad - if you’re parking or turning in a narrow road and need to change between D/R mulitple times quickly - a stalk/gear shifter lets you do that part blind so you can concentrate on your surroundings. Reaching over to the screen and swiping (and hoping it selected correctly) will slow you down and lose sight of whats around. Also I think risks increased accidents from people thinking they’re in D/R when they aren’t..
I think you are on a correct trace here. There are a number of situations when it's good to be able to handle quite fast. Let's say you have to reverse onto a road near a crest...
Have heard similar arguments before, and i totally understand.
Just a note, the new "buttons" are improved haptic wise compared to the S and X. Its no button, but other reviewers made it seem like it almost felt like one. (due to the great active haptic)
It's laughable that after spending this much on a new car, the first thing you have to do when you get it is finish building it yourself, using third party modifications... Those buttons on the wheel was clearly designed by an American who is unaware that most of the world uses roundabouts, not intersections...
@@FireWalkMusic I im well aware that many people oppose this, but again, Tesla is minimalist and want to remove as much clutter as possible.
The stalks aren't the end of the world, but certainly do have a learning curve.
And i doubt they were designed by an unaware american. First, they've gotten plenty of feedback from S and X, so they could have changed it. The question is why not. The wheel returned but the stalk didn't.
@@sebastianorye2702 simple, because it's cheaper. It's just a cost cutting measured. Cheaper and easier / quicker to manufacture.
Your 90% correctness is 20 times more correct then Carwow, and other car channels!!
I though my correctness was 99.99 % 🤣
thats why u have different sources to fact check by. Also carwow have now turned more towards entertainment it feels like
Carwow is a comercial chanel. But that brings most customers that don't bother with much details
The fact that you are, have been and forevermore will be Tesla Bjorn is vital and unique in the world of EV commentary. You have owned, driven and tested every Tesla and pretty much every other EV. So, you are uniquely placed to test, drive and compare on behalf of the wider community and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the new M3.
@@bjornnyland NEIN NEIN NEIN NEIN!!
Could watch Norwegian scenery all day
Bjorn is about the only person I trust with Tesla reviews. Keeps it honest, balanced opinion, informative...and no hyperbole. Thank you!
It was a mistake to remove the stalks. A lot of people really hate those buttons on the wheel, me included. Especially the turn signals are really annoying to use in roundabouts.
That was a really bold move, considering that the aim with this refresh was to make the car more appealing to more people. That move alone will instead make it a deal breaker for some.
Instead of a rear screen and ambient lighting they should have focused on adding a small instrument cluster or a HUD, kept the stalks, and redesigned the back so that it became a proper hatchback instead. Far more practical! That sure would have made it more appealing to more people. Now they are actually alienating a lot of people instead just because of the stalks, and the small cost cut isn't really worth it in my opinion.
The rear screen is the best feature, what are you talking about. No more are we there yet???
It can’t be due to cost cutting - must be another reason…I can’t work it out though! I don’t like the buttons but would put up with it still
Could not agree more with you. Stalks and hatchback would be a lot more useful than rear screen. Seems like the wrong priority.
@@cokyrobes It fits in their philosophy of no parts are the best parts. And I can imagine it will make a future retractable steering wheel more easy to implement. Note: I'm not saying I agree with these reasons.
M3 is not an option for me because of it not being a hatchback.
I have not tried the no-stalks, but I would think the problem here is not implementing steer-by-wire too. If they had that setup with a maximum of +- 90 degrees from center, I think the buttons would be ok.
First of all, great videos on your channel!
Do you know if there is a front camera in the bumper now in the model 3 highland?
Great video, I love your focus on technical details. Btw - the Polestar does seem to have high cabin noise at 70 (my guess at your speed). There is a constant tyre noise......
Amazing content as always Bjorn. Thank you.
I was plan to purchase a Model Y next year around spring time, but honestly, seeing what are the improvements on the ''Highland'' model, I'd rather be patient a wait that Tesla is releasing the Model Y (Highland) called ''Juniper''. Thanks Björn.
I believe many people think like you, and this is why Tesla probably should get the Y updated as fast as possible too.
@@fr3238fully agree with both of you (wait for updated Y and best to release asap)
Im not sure the juniper y will be released 2024. For our needs the current y is worth more than the new highline(too small and we need big tailgate) we will pick up the y at the end of September
@fr3238 One good thing about taking out the stalks is that Tesla won't be stuck with current model Y stock. Plenty of people will prefer the version with stalks.
Regarding the top speed its been reduced due to the rating of the tyre they now use on the Highlander. The tyres are designed for comfort and noise reduction rather than higher top speeds.
The new tyres are first and foremost reduced in rolling resistance. Tesla claims in the WLTP tests that they now test with a rolling resistance of 7 (old 7,5). Unfortunately this is also the main reason for the lowered consumption figures or increased range. As soon as you change to winter tyres or any other tyres the consumption might be the same as on the old Model 3.
@@desmoheliYou're correct. WLTP range went from 491 km to 513 km. That's only a 4,5 % improvement in range.
Low resistance tires can give a 2-3 % range increase.
@@desmoheliThe main reason for the increased range is a significant improvement in aerodynamics. The tyres also help.
Significant from 0.225-0.219?
To me it seems like there is a lot of bullshit about this... This has never done in any other car before and I see no use. At somepoint somebody will decide to change the tyres for whatever reason and they should be able to tune their car as they please. It is not Tesla's car anymore, I think some people are forgetting this... From my point of view the speed reduction is just a strict business decision to differentiate their trims and models. If you want more speed: go to the performance version or the Model S and pay more.
Yep, my 2008 Peugeot 308 has an amber down light in the cabin, illuminating the transmission tunnel from the rear vision mirror module. On all the time and it works well.
Hi Bjorn, thank you for the video. Did they mention anything about the front camera. Will it have a 360 degree view. Interested in updates to Tesla vision.
Hey Bjørn, I really enjoy the "audio only" content, did you ever think about additionally releasing it as podcast?
I think it would be great to be able to listen to it on the go (by downloading it e.g. in Apple Podcasts) or without having to have the TH-cam app open on the phone. To pay for it, or even generate additional revenue, you could include a short sponsored section, like in other podcasts.
TH-cam premium or other methods.
Regarding ambient light I have made a simple solution in the current M3. I have used some orange tape covering one roof light in the back and one in the front. It’s off course important to use tape, that allows light to pass through. Cover it and cut it round with a sharp knife. Works perfect - almost as good in my BMW. It allows me to see all passengers and and other stuff I the car at night. Only downside is that you switch in on manually.
I'm past-owner of an Model 3 and now owner of a Polestar 2. I used Tesla during hot summer only with towels on the hot seats but in Polestar standard-seats i don't need anything to feel dry.
How's your Polestar 2 experience compared to Tesla M3? I'm in the process of deciding between the two following Polestar 2's 2024 update
@@IceyJ4lyf The M3 is the sportier vehicle: you sit lower, the suspension is harder, the acceleration is more direct. It's also about 10-15% more efficient and has more rear seat space.
The P2 is the more comfortable and nicer car: you sit a little higher (but not like in an SUV), the suspension is more responsive and a little softer, the engines are more torque-oriented, the standard brakes are better, it's quieter, you can get it without a glass roof, the seats are made of woven fabric which is more breathable and you have parking sensors that works.
The charging performance is similar - the M3 starts off significantly stronger, but also decreases more quickly. It is better to charge both only up to 70% on long journeys and therefore more often. Some problems on both models were fixed with the facelift. As in the past, people buy an electric car not only because of the best price/performance ratio but also because of personal preferences. I've never driven cars that can be seen on every corner, but that's how it is now with Tesla.
Good luck with your selection.
Yeah i have the 21 model with one moter in the tailgate. It happens quite often that it is not aligned. Good update.
Hej Bjørn,
Do you know anything about the upgrade feature, can you buy the BOOST option for the new LR?
I wonder if they can put the right turn signal on the right side of the steering wheel and then single press any to switch off or double press to inverse blinking. This would help with roundabouts. The auto switch off mechanism already helps in all other situations.
I'd be surprised if Tesla didn't do ample usability testing with the turn signal before making the product decision. I'd say try it out first for a while. Chances are that it actually is better because it makes you keep your hands on the wheel.
@Martinit0 tests done on this channel show it is very difficult to use on roundabouts. The only way to keep your hands on the wheel would be a steer-by-wire system and even then the buttons would be inverted at some point.
There are 3 possible settings for interior accent lights: On, Off and Auto. Does the last one adjust automatically the intensity to ambient light?
Or maybe it just turns it on automatically at night, but at full brightness.
@@conradce That would be really stupid and unsafe for the driver...
Great video! Any chance they added passenger lumbar controls? Would go well with the comfort theme.
Hey Björn, did you hear anything about the noise cancellation software? I was hoping they would also put that in the model 3.
Yes, surely Tesla has been watching all your videos and taken your critiques to heart ...... maybe you could get Tesla to update the Y and release next month as many of us are ready to purchase the next gen 🙂
Does it have 5g or stil 4g? Does it have a forward pedestrian warning system now on low speeds? Does it have hw4, hw 3.5 or just 3? Do.the turn lights have a sequence? That are questions people should answer not this default things we already knew
Any updates on the base model 3 lfp battery?
For me the only reason why i went for Model 3 Perf. Cuz of the track mode. I want to be able to turn all the safety off and have in rear wheel drive in winter to be a little bit ignorant from time to time 😁
And yes even more power and better performance brakes are a big plus as well.
I guess wanting to stand out a bit more as well. Cuz everyone and your mom has a model 3 long range.
So also added some after market carbon fiber bits to the outside and even lowered it a bit more. Of course some cool wheels as well.
Standard/stock model 3s are driving around everywhere in Norway, every one has literally the same looking car. So i had to do something hehe.
I selled my Model 3 because Teslas are in every second Street. But I think there are a lot more of eggy Model Y than 3.
@@Torsten. Yep, I mean its kinda like facebook. It was cool at the start, until everyone's mom and grandfather started using it :D
Same with Tesla it has awesome technology it has crazy speed BUT because literally everyone has one it became (at least for me) the most uncool car brand right now.
So i think i will go back to something like BMW again, when im done with my Model 3.
What is about the new bumper cam in the front ?
I couldn’t see a new, additional cam so far.
I think they should have more sporty seats with better side support also for upper body if they do a performance version to differentiate. And give customers an option to have physical blinker and gearing shifters. Just moved on to a Polestar 2 performance after two years in a M3 performance, and I find it hard to think about having a car without physical shifter for the indicator lights.
Have they fixed the Tow Hitch (Location)? Pull a lot of trailer with my m3lr but the cable for the trailer is trashed from backing up on my driveway (Slightly uphill)
In info on the front bumper camera? Apparently it was shown on the vehicle photos on the tesla website for a day or two, and it has now disappeared from all photos.
Very detailed info. Any ideas on what they might do with the Model 3 highland Performance/Plaid?
Scenery was so beautiful and peaceful
Tack!👍 Do you think this Upgrade coming to model Y to?
Hi
Does somebody know if the M3 Highland is equiped with HW4?
The small wordplay jokes is why I keep coming back to your videos Bjørn!
Also thanks for showing these nuggets of info, I hope Tesla’s employees can relay more of this background info in the future as well
ABC - Always Be Coming back
Agree about the 120mph limit and increase comfort. And I was thinking the same, that they could differentiate more LR and P… hopefully new improvements to wipers and light soon. 👍👍
About the lack of stalks for the correct indication on a roundabout and elsewhere, at least when navigation is on, it could signal automatically to follow route.
The reduced top speed is a non issue really: my 2021 has 233kmh and I actually did 205 kmh exactly 3 times for less than 5min each time over 50000km. It anyway only works in DE and absolutely noone needs that. Usually you could not drive that fast anyway...
I often go Basel-Stuttgart and back, often times it's limited to 120, back in Switzerland also max 120 of course. The limit is only a problem in people's minds, not in reality haha
Usually Tesla drivers are the slowest of the bunch because they want to conserve the battery 😂
My old car also could go 210, but realistically you use it once a year and the rest you go 160 anyways, even on an ICE
@@dingdong2103 you should come to the CZ... here that ia definitely not the case. but then again we also have reasonable speed limits
besides Teslas are the most efficient so we do not need conserving much 🤣
@@tesla-spectre That's not my experience. About 9 out of 10 Teslas I see on the road are driving way below the speed limits. I recall only a couple of cases where a Tesla was actually driving rigorously.
The echos you mention could be flutter echos or more probably a focal effect of the curved glass. If you ever try to have meetings in "nice" meeting rooms with curved walls, ceilings or even entire domes you will have these weird phenomenons because everything is reflected back to the center or any focal point(s). Unfortunately architects usually get one week of acoustics education during 5 years of study. Basically my job is to fix what architects design.
I have the same kind of ambient lighting in my car and, for me, at least, it's not an issue.
I keep it on max brightness and mostly on blue, because it should theoretically keep you more alert / awake.
I guess the batteries are really not updated with the refresh, maybe they still have the older tech under contract, but they will probably upgrade the battery at some point without any whistles :)
Guessing Tesla are using the battery upgrade at a later date to keep sales momentum going.
@Bjorn, have you had a chance to check audio experience in the SR+ version of Highland? I have heard there was slight improvement: Amp and more speakers (up to 9?), but is there sub in the trunk??
No sub. Read the specs.
Great video as always. Maybe the ambient lights will even sync to the sound and pulse...
They really should do something with their matrix headlights on M3 & MY.
What about the front bumper camera?
Also, what is the turning radius for the RWD Highland model?
any news aboult the performace version?
On the Highland how do you adjust the steering wheel position? From the centre screen? 🇨🇦
As usual, on the spot comments and views expressed, Chapeau 🎩 !!!
Great video’s Björn . Just wondering, I read here that there will be a refresh of the Y called Juniper. But will there be a proper refresh of the S & X with better interior, better soundproofing, better car chassis? And is there someone who knows more of a expected timeframe for upgraded S & X models?
Hi Bjorn, did the Tesla engineer that you recently spoke with about the Model 3 Highland mention why Tesla has opted not to use giga castings in the refreshed version of the 3 at this juncture? Thanks
I doubt the "why" of that decision is widely shared within the company. It's an implementation detail that isn't user-facing.
That „sweatie“ thing with previous Model 3 seats, glad you mentioned this and glad it should be better with the new one.
Regarding the buttons for the turn signals, how do you cancel a selection if you selected it in error?
It will likely be the same as the current stalk system - just press the same button again to cancel
Anyone knows if the front bumper camera will be there? On the first pics you could see it but all the reviews don't show it anymore. Would be such a good addition for Tesla Vision.
Can't find any info about the camera, we probably have to wait for the first batch of cars. But most likely the camera in the front bumper is not there.
We have no info yet on M3 Highland Cameras of 5Mp or 1.2 Mp and HW version. Then nothing was said for M3P
I have heard from a different TH-camr the Highland at IAA in Munich had HW4 due to red circle around the cameras.
Will acceleration boost still be available for the M3 LR Highland?
I personally miss the pano roof that my 2012 and 2015 MS had. I used the open pano roof frequently and although I love the glass roof in my 2022 MS, I wish I had the ability to open the roof for fresh air.
What about the new front camera in the bumper?
I'm happy highland is here, more occasion options of old Model 3 👌
What about HE4? In particular about the front camera at the front of the car?
Will we ever see a option for adding stalks to the steering wheel? Or are there any aftermarket solutions for this?
Yes, makers of S3XY buttons are already working on those. They look like stock, great quality.
@@KamenMarkovcan you provide a link for that?
How does it compare to the new polestar? 😀
Does the highland run steam?
What are all the differences between the Dual and Rear drive cars. For instance will the rear drive have a subwoofer? I know about the battery.
any info on the battery chemistry for the LR version?
What I could find was no battery change vs non-Highland.
Should have been the Nyland not the Highland.
What about new autopilot equipment? There was talk about new camera in the front or new radar unit, but no mention of it anywhere, so might not be anything new yet?
What about the space in the driver's position and rear seats?
08:00 only 200 is only a theme in Germany. Purchasing speed index W tires living in a 130 limited country can be a pain. When I look on a tire website, most cheap tires have already V for 240 km/h. Some other have H for 210, but no major price difference. So 240 would have been very reasonable.
Top speed probably limited by the tire choice?
Did you have change to test which body panels are magnetic steel and which aluminum?
Good question.
Björn waiting for some Information on Tesla Y Project Juniper 2024 on the Channel 😂.
What about the LR battery? Is it CATL? What chemistry, what gross and net cap etc? Is it (semi) structural? Pls uniform us
Does anyone know if the charge port is illuminated? Such a pain trying to plug in when it is dark!
That would be nice.
Good point.
Bjorn does the very best car reviews👌
Good insight, thanks. I’ve never driven above 200 kmh in my M3P, it would likely mean a stint in jail if you got caught here in Oz 🇦🇺.
And yes - Moveable glass sun roofs are nice to use VERY occasionally, but a total nightmare with all sorts of issues including leaks.
P.S.
I am very happy about losing the stalks. Good riddance. I will update my 2019 as soon as I can get the P Highland.
(There’s a VERY good reason that Formula 1 drivers have no such rubbish! Just keep the hands on the wheel at 10 to 3, even on a roundabout, easy!)
I get to try this out when the CT l ordered arrives Christmas Day 2025! My reservation is 75K....won't be disappointed if its early. ;)
Amazing scenic road.
Love silent cars. Love your videos
Will you get the same updates for the model Y? Firs time buyer considering if I should go for the Y (for space and practicalities), the new model 3 or the old model 3 (for a possible bargain)
The updated Model Y will come next year. It is called project Juniper.
Any improvement on the steering radius ? Since the suspension is redesigned…
Anybody knows, If the acceleration boost will still be available for the new LR?!
What about 360 camera view and where are the front bumper cameras?
No mention of matrix activation sw?
A bigger differentiation between the RWD/LR and performance is a wise move. The vast majority of people want comfort in their cars
We need to know what is it with front bumper camera! :D
Maybe the Model-3 Plaid will have a high speed performance just like the Model S plaid.
Hi Bjørn, I wonder if the door side storage space is covered by microfiber like the Model Y?
Yes it is. Front and back. Have seen it on other videos. Also in the trunk is more of this carpet style material. Cover of trunk lid and the rear cover in the trunk.
@@ralphkerschensteiner yeah that's good news. Now just one frunk away from the Model S in terms of the material used haha.
@@JackPan 👌🏻😄
Does the frunk power close as well now or does it still have to be closed manually?
Manually
I'm not sure how much this feature has been requested but it seems it would be common place now. To not have this in an updated model is a bit shortsighted, imo@@bjornnyland
New warning tone (obstacle on road) at 14:50. I like it. It was less scary than the old version warning sound.
What about the front bumper cam?
Best part is no part. Best roof is no roof…just a window. My Ford F-150 moonroof dies after 10 years, only used it a few times a year. They wanted $7,000 USD to fix/replace the whole thing after a cheap plastic part broke….no thank you!!
The reduction in max speed maybe also allows to use a better tyre which is a bit cheaper and also improves comfort ?
I remember reading that Tesla changed their head lights a couple of years ago so that left and right hand drive cars use the same hardware. Software was used to adjust the light direction. 🇨🇦
I think this was around the time of the opening of the Berlin factory, where the matrix lights where presented.
About the fact that now you can turn off the air of the passenger, do you think will arrive in the Model Y by update? Do you have more info?
Can you turn off the air to the mother-in-law?
@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck in the new model 3 yes, many journalist say like that. So i hope this will be possibile in the current Model 3 and Model Y with a future update considering that actually the passenger side vents turn off automatically when there is no passenger. So finally the wife stop to complain.
If you have the chance to talk to a Tesla dude, can you ask if we can upgrade the seats we have on old model 3? Thanks
I love seeing the beautiful Norwegian countryside while listening to Bjørn's informative commentary. 😀
That countryside, nice as it is, is booooring compared to the roads at the looong coast of Norway. Trust me...
if you have an highland, make an lightshow for testing the matrix function…
