      It’s OK then gets good then gets to be amazing. Very clever review but as you will see in the months to come this will be a very popular title because everything it’s well designed and empowering and fun…and ultimately as hard as you can handle. The resources are not live service crap at all, there are multiple activities that the player will want to take part of (in many ways the mythology works…Intel for vs Hydra away missions tor example). Enjoying the heck out of it and even the character interactions with the heroes get to be GOOD as time goes on (yeah, it’s biggest weakness but writing is pretty clever and represents the characters as well. Not to mention that EVERY hero in the game is good and true to their persona. 5 stars from the guy without a TH-cam channel. Cheers!

    I’m convinced someone on staff is making the outro ever so slightly louder every episode just to screw with us

    • @gogauze
      @gogauze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      I'm almost positive that there are only a max of two people in that chain, should your conspiracy pan out. Yahtz still makes the things himself, and the outro is almost old enough to collect Social Security in TH-cam years. Nick probably reviews them before they go out, but I don't know if he's ever given Yahtzee any notes or direction, since he's such a well oiled machine at this by now. I'd bet money that, sent out at the same time, the only other person who handles the file would be whomever uploads it-which also might still be Nick. So if anyone IS screwing with us, it's propably Yahtz or Nick.

      Reminds me of how it took me a while to understand why so many people had that particular gripe with the MCU. I eventually realised it's because they were never massively desensitised to it by badly-written Marvel _comics._

      @ajalferez5927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      This is pretty accurate. Personally I find just Stark and Strange unbearable here. Josh Keaton, the Stark voice actor was trying so hard to replicate RDJ and it comes off as incredibly forced, meanwhile Strange just... Doesn't have the correct Doctor Strange personality.

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      @@mutantfreak48 Oh, a lot of the badly-written ones, for sure, depending on era. Stuff like Ultimatum springs unpleasantly to mind. Part of what makes the absolute worst of them _so_ bad, though, is the sheer tonal dissonance of the embarrassing edgelord nonsense going on, the fact that everyone seems to hate each other and the fact that no-one will stop bloody quipping. Again, that's why it never really bothered me in _most_ of the MCU. The films generally skew light and the character dynamics are usually fairly earnest so it doesn't feel _as_ out of place that they'd be joking around with each other even when the stakes were high. Doesn't mean it can't get tiresome - I really do get why people mightn't be fans of the franchise - but, dear goodness, it could be a lot worse.

    • @Pineappolis
      @Pineappolis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@ajalferez5927 I've not played the game so can't really comment beyond saying that, yeah, that would definitely get on my nerves, too. There's plenty of ways to make Tony Stark work and trying to ape RDJ's version doesn't seem like a smart way to go even if you've got a voice actor who can do it very well. Doctor Strange, on the other hand, is... challenging to get right in most media. There have certainly been more understated takes on him in the comics that have worked well enough but, for me, he's always at his best when he's at a level of bombast that's only one step down from Doctor Orpheus in Venture Brothers. That, in and of itself, means he needs to be used quite sparingly, though, which presumably wouldn't really work with the gameplay.

      @Pineappolis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@juannot1353 Christ, well-remembered, that was a decade ago. It was Valkyria, though (a series I haven't played), and the Fire Emblems of that time didn't really have anything resembling XCOM's base building layer. It is true that Three Houses captures, _to an extent,_ that same ludicrously exciting XCOM sense (it's a serious contender for my favourite game of all time) of having a ludicrous number of priorities to worry about (if you want to get almost everyone on your side and make them all unstoppable killing machines) that you constantly feel like you're one step away from ruining everything. The difference (and what I thought would have killed Three Houses for Yahz) is that _every_ decision in XCOM feels mission-critical, whereas a fair bit of what you do in Three Houses feels either like dinking around or, worse (in the case of the class-teaching element), important in the long but ridiculously incremental.
      Of course, as I was thinking last night, it's possible he didn't take everything in Three Houses as seriously as I did, just sorted out the important stuff and ignored or auto-ed everything else, and thus didn't end up with _my_ biggest gripe with Three Houses - it quickly becoming absurdly easy. Given Persona 5 sounds a lot more elegant in its non-combat portions than Three Houses, you're probably both onto something.

      Which is more in-character than Blade is in the rest of the game. He's more than a tad too quippy and happy compared to what his whole vibe is. And I'm not talking about the times where the game pokes fun at his emotional reservedness, that part is fine, it's how he feels completely out of place on a team that aside from him is a bunch of teens(as in, teens played by mid-20s actors on a CW drama aimed at teens). They don't even get the "is dark and broody and very defensive about how dark and broody they are" trope despite it being very common.

    The people of Rapa Nui didn't cut down their trees to move the Moai. They likely cut down their trees to farm the land, like most farmers do.
    The trees that grow there aren't really suitable for making logs for rolling, and some research suggests that they might have actually made the statues "walk" with a series of teams pulling ropes attached to the statue at various points. The current research about it is really interesting. I learned about it from the Fall of Civilizations youtube channel.

Not in the way you make the story before the game begins but have other characters comment on the backstory and let the player choose how to answer. Like maybe your stories of old weren't that fantastic or heroic as legends made them out to be or there's aspects of the story lost to time you can fill in. Shit like that at least makes the player more invested in filling this backstory the way they want it

    As someone who adores Marvel and XCOM, this was as close as my opinions have aligned with Yahtzee's in what seems like ages. Combat's great. Every superhero (even your self-insert OC) can wreck shop by themselves, but there are also some key party synergies (e.g. Strange needing Heroism for damage buffs and Nico generating a lot of it, or Magick's near limitless ability to reposition with portals to set up Spidey's endless environmental attacks) .
    The open world crafting stuff is a chore and utterly meaningless (you can instead scrap cards to get the requisite resources instead, it's faster), and this is from a guy who enjoys open world faffing-about. The "dating sim" element I really could do without, except it's what gates the superheroes' special abilities, like Magick's free portal refills or Spidey's Heroism rebates.
    I could've gone with a more streamlined version of this ala XCOM Chimera Squad.

      Just finished it this earlier this week. The campy cheesy dialogue works for me. Ironically the only person whose quips don’t work for me is Tony. Keaton is a good VO and I don’t know why he decided to go with an RDJ impression. The Blade subplot might be my favorite thing at the Abbey.

    • @gwen9939
      @gwen9939 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mittensbro Eh, the dating game stuff is kinda funny. Like it's definitely not good but it serves as better framing for interpersonal storytelling than if it was just a string of missions with storytelling in-between as cutscenes. Actually running around with your character is a chill part of the gameplay, it's just not a very well-executed one. The map is atmospheric, but clunky and confusing in its design, the collectathon and mini-puzzle aspect is neat but again, too confusing and not intuively presented. You don't want to scour every single corner of the map because it's not very interesting but acquiring and upgrading cards, finding keys and chests, talking to characters, sparring, leveling up relationships to get combo cards, sending teammates on solo-missions, etc... it serves the same function as building your homebase in x-com and the game would be worse without it.
      The idea is good, and it's better that it's there than not, but it could've been executed way better. The cosmetics/grindathon monetization is just plain bad though, all customizable options should be attainable by just playing the game casually.
