I grew up listening to Bonham... There really was no one like him at the time.. His live show stamina, heavy hitting, footwork, use of Triplets, etc... Some of the signature beats he laid down were iconic and so influential.. His Shuffle Beat to Fool in the Rain was also one that is referenced by many.. He also had a great understanding of how to tune his Drums to achieve the sound & projection he wanted... Greatest Rock Drummer in History..
I just watched part of another reaction video...and AGAIN...I'm seeing stuff in his performance I HAVEN'T SEEN before...at on point NOT TO LONG before he throws away the sticks....about 40 seconds?? He was doing a SPEED clinic...and I never noticed how he took his left hand ACROOSSSSSS HIS BODY TO HIT THE KETTLE...he was BRUCE LEE ON DRUMS!!!! I ALWAYS thought NOBODY could be better than JOHN...HIS son would HAVE to be the closest.
Led Zeppelin in general is just the greatest rock band in history. Each of the members was the best at what they do, and together, combined with the greatest songs ever written, makes them the Holy Grail of rock and roll.
100% agree, there are many great rock drummers, to me Bonham just stands a little higher in the groove/talent aspect. Amazing skill, amazing drum sound, legend.
John Bonham was and always will be the GOAT. Not just because of his talent/ ability but his drumming has a feel to it that is his alone. It’s big and bombastic but at the same time it is tight and technical. It also has ( for lack of a better term) this dirty groove to it that you don’t get from other drummers. He was also a master of acoustics and sound. Even though he came along before all the technology we have today, he didn’t even need it. What a loss to the music world on the day he died. RIP John Bonham. You are surely missed😢
it's Amazing HOW HE DOES A DRUM SOLO FOR 14 minutes AND NEVER missed A BEAT with THE high HATS AND THATS WHY HE WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER in THE WORLD 🥁
Nothing better than a 6.5"x14" Luddy [Ludwig] Ludalloy LM402 Supraphonic, with chrome over aluminum shell. Too bad the shell corrodes & pits over time. Chrome & Aluminum are opposites that don't get along all that well! ;) Cheers!
He had a double bass for a short time, the band kept hiding it, because he didn’t need it. Someone once said, they threw it in the river, true or not I don’t know. I will say, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Oh there is a video of him using two.
1 hell of drummer, More like a drummer from hell. He was so fucking good you can even say god wanted him for himself which explains why God took him so early.
What a freakin' beast! Incredible power, stamina, coordinated independence, and dynamics. I'd say he was a percussionist, remarkably musical as a drummer. More so than one might expect in a heavy metal band. Simply sensational.
I always describe this as human liquid. He had such a flow in his movements. Is John Henry Bonham a drummer or a percussionist ? He is a Drumcussionist. Loved your reaction God Bless.
Back in those days the crowd was far too stoned out to appreciate the extreme high level talent they just watched grace them with one of the greatest drum solos of all time. Had this solo been done today, the crowd would have gave John a standing ovation for 10 minutes.
You said it, it's Bonham's swing that sets the tone for his solo's and his whole feel as a drummer... when you can start from those elements and just build off them (not easy) then as a drummer you're in rarified air.
To add to the amazement of his playing, Moby Dick was near the end of the concert. Playing it in between Stairway To Heaven and Heartbreaker with no real break between songs.
Just found this and really hope you have or will react to Bonham on “Achilles Last Stand” live from Knebworth. I think his drumming on that performance is even more epic than this solo. He was the GOAT!
@Fred Trommel that is true now that I think about. I believe he said it was the lighter sound that he liked. The Black beauty was a heavier, darker sound
Yeah .. Buddy Rich might deserve his (well sought after) accolades, but Bonzo just leaves the drummer you-tubers speechless! I'm no drummer JSD, but I'd say JHB's talents & performance would span the percussive orchestral spectrum - You can feel JHB's 10k Horsepower in all of it's dynamically accurate glory as the thunder shakes BR's moped to pieces .. 🐻🕊🍻 We can thank Page for preserving the 70's audio quality .. 🐏
And remember, John Bonham only played a single kick bass...and never used a double-kick pedal (They may not have even been invented yet).....his right foot is just that fast!
actually he did play with a double bass, but was so loud jimmy hid it from him. and eventually sold him on the fact he didn't need it. which he didn't. but i always wished he would have played one track with two.
John Bonzo Bonham WAS A SELF taut DRUMMER AND WHEN his SON JASON BONHAM WAS VERY YOUNG JOHN BONHAM taut him HOW TO PLAY DRUM'S AND NOW HE is A VERY GOOD DRUMMER AND JOHN BONHAM died in 1980 FROM ALCOHOL ABUSE AND HE WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER in THE WORLD 🥁
I just call him the Beast. It seems like he's beating the brakes off the drums but in actuality if you listen he has a light touch believe it or not, by watching it. He actually had a double bass in mind but the band hit it from him
Thank you for this excellent reaction! I suggest you check out Anderson .Paak. He is an excellent drummer, rapper, and singer. “ Put Me Through” would be a good song to check out.
As a drummer I get loads of hassle,1. the single bass Drum Double strokes, I do heal and toe ..like bouncing off the skin on the bass, every one says its all ball of off heal ..I did my stuff on heal and toe ...his leg is not going big time upwards ..I love jazz ,,Crupa ,,Rich ,,double strokes ..Tuning ..He loved jazz drummers ...I just think its all mixed ...to what he felt ..subtle ..then all sing on everything for power ...Senstive I think ..then full on power ..which most Drummers today do all power, that has no subtle times ...he was great ...he just did his thing ..which is feelung ..if it works ..do ...no rules ..like all music! His way ...the best ..
Jason just discovered your channel, luv it!!! watched a few, great react videos! id recommend you check out and react to: “drum solo michael shrieve soul sacrifice santana woodstock 1969” -and - “the who drum solo keith moon”
Alternate timing Independence of appendages fastest single foot playing with his hands and beating the complete brakes off that comparative small drum kit you might think about influences like Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich
Key to his sound apart from the way he plays is the setup of his kit. He uses large sizes and tunes them high like the old time big band jazz drummers. You must do a reaction to Ginger Baker next. You will hear a lot of similarity between them.
Ginger Baker - Cream, from their third LP Wheels Of Fire, a double LP where one is studio and the second live.....Toad.......over 16 minutes and most is just the drums. Pretty much build up like Moby Dick......some playing with the band before the solo. I'm not a drummer but I listen to it at least every second year in a dark room with closed eyes.........I don't know why I like it so much........but I'm glad to be alive to hear this one. th-cam.com/video/I6lZ7EoWWjk/w-d-xo.html
Drummer...ALL OUT DRUMMER...Neil of RUSH is more of a percussionist...nobody is a better drummer than JOHN BONHAM ever was...John always asked why so many drummers needed to add so much their drum kits... wondered why they needed them to get the sounds they wanted...JOHN would find the sounds in the most basic drums... SEEMS he liked his kit simple so HE COULD SHINE. AND DAMN! DID HE SHINE!
John Bonham, Drummer or Percussionist.... Neither...... His Drums had a voice...they sang, they had rhythm, they had musicality, they had soul... on Led Zep tracks the Drums followed the Vocals, or they followed the Guitar, or they followed the Bass or they just did whatever they wanted to..... so... John Bonham - Multi Instrumentalist...
Bonham is a drummer for my mind. Keith Moon for me was more of a percussionist, and in no way played the real hold it all together role that Bonham did.

In my humble opinion...he is the GOAT OF GOATS! As his band is! 😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Now you know why Bonham is widely considered to be the greatest rock drummer of all time.
I just watched part of another reaction video...and AGAIN...I'm seeing stuff in his performance I HAVEN'T SEEN before...at on point NOT TO LONG before he throws away the sticks....about 40 seconds?? This is the best recorded version of his solo and his drums sound incredible
It’s the best to see better what he’s doing, the camera person did great.
I read somewhere that the drum solo was emulating the revving of piston engine and I cannot unheard it since
Yes I heard that too.
The best drummer ever
God’s big drummer boy!!!❤❤❤
The Mighty John Bonham is not human.....He's a Beast!!!!! This drummer is truly an innovator and a pinnacle of Heavy Rock drumming.....
it's Amazing HOW HE DOES A DRUM SOLO FOR 14 minutes AND NEVER missed A BEAT with THE high HATS AND THATS WHY HE WAS THE GREATEST DRUMMER in THE WORLD 🥁
John Henry Bonham is the benchmark of all references.
the absolute perfect sounding snare
Literally!
Nothing better than a 6.5"x14" Luddy [Ludwig] Ludalloy LM402 Supraphonic, with chrome over aluminum shell. Too bad the shell corrodes & pits over time. Chrome & Aluminum are opposites that don't get along all that well! ;) Cheers!
Great reaction...just imagine what he would have done with a double bass. The band wouldn't let him use one. They said he had enough going on already!
He had a double bass for a short time, the band kept hiding it, because he didn’t need it. Someone once said, they threw it in the river, true or not I don’t know. I will say, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did. Oh there is a video of him using two.
I Say he's a Percussionist and a Perfectionist a one Hell of a Drummmer!! ..
1 hell of drummer, More like a drummer from hell. He was so fucking good you can even say god wanted him for himself which explains why God took him so early.
#1 rest in peace John you will never be forgotten
Words alone cannot describe this…. Like its namesake it is an epic tale
Like peeling back an onion, I pick up something new every time I watch this performance. 🥁RIP Bonzo
Dame deal with all their songs.... required learning/listening... so many hidden gems.
There is nobody that can be Bonham! A magician!!
Amen 👍👍👍
Still takes my breath away...even after having watched it literally hundreds of times! #❤️loveuJohnHenryBonham!❤️#
John Bonham Master drummer & percussionist
I myself have drummed since 1968. I've always thought Bonzo THE GREAT. Drummer of all TIME..
That he was.
You've got to imagine the entire story of Moby Dick with the chase, the tension, the melodrama, and the anger.
It definitely took you on a trip!
He’s a musician and a master of his craft.
What a freakin' beast! Incredible power, stamina, coordinated independence, and dynamics. I'd say he was a percussionist, remarkably musical as a drummer. More so than one might expect in a heavy metal band. Simply sensational.
The weren’t a heavy metal band, those are their words too, hard rock at times yes they were.
I always describe this as human liquid. He had such a flow in his movements. Is John Henry Bonham a drummer or a percussionist ? He is a Drumcussionist. Loved your reaction God Bless.
Good Gosh almighty 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Genius drummer he was.
He influenced so many, even Animal from the muppets. This performance was more than half a century ago, absolutely incredible.
The Animal was based on Keith Moon not John Bonham.
Simply amazing. Always enjoyable to watch, especially with an appreciative lad.
Back in those days the crowd was far too stoned out to appreciate the extreme high level talent they just watched grace them with one of the greatest drum solos of all time.
Had this solo been done today, the crowd would have gave John a standing ovation for 10 minutes.
Everyone wasn't stoned but there was much more talent to choose from
You said it, it's Bonham's swing that sets the tone for his solo's and his whole feel as a drummer... when you can start from those elements and just build off them (not easy) then as a drummer you're in rarified air.
10:58 Wow a lot going on here. He's my favorite drummer of all time. He's got so much variety, super complex combination of beats.
The greatest ever!
Bonzo the God of drumming. Superb!!!!
Great reaction. Loved watching that. It was actually recorded just a week and a half after the 1960s. January 9th 1970. Even more impressive.
Cheers.
Thank you! I really enjoyed this one.
Yes on Jimmy Pages 26th birthday.
Bonzo was a drummer, Neil Peart was a percussionist
John Bonham was twenty years old in this video and he played a 6’5 x 14 supraphonic
snare
Long Live Bonzo!!!
Amen to that!
21 year old John Bonham
To add to the amazement of his playing, Moby Dick was near the end of the concert. Playing it in between Stairway To Heaven and Heartbreaker with no real break between songs.
Just found this and really hope you have or will react to Bonham on “Achilles Last Stand” live from Knebworth. I think his drumming on that performance is even more epic than this solo. He was the GOAT!
Fabulous audio quality... All analog recording.. that snnnnnaaaare sound!
Qdo achilles last stand live at Knebworth. He's a god damn machine!!!
dang cowbell was running away scared
LOL
John Bonham is a GOD no-one is better
I don't know if anyone answered your question or not but it was a Ludwig Black Beauty. Thx for the Reaction
@Fred Trommel that is true now that I think about. I believe he said it was the lighter sound that he liked. The Black beauty was a heavier, darker sound
BONZO! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️
Regarding the sound quality, this was from the Led Zeppelin DVD and was a remastered recording of that show. They did an amazing job on the audio.
Technically, since he used a cow bell...and a gong, he was a percussionist. ;-)
it mimics an idling and then revving hotrod...idling and revving
Subscribed from France!!
Thank you sir!
In response to your question 10:19, I think John Bonham used Ludwig drums if im not mistaken.

and he was a machine gunner with his foot on the ole Hi Hat !
actually he did play with a double bass, but was so loud jimmy hid it from him. and eventually sold him on the fact he didn't need it. which he didn't. but i always wished he would have played one track with two.
Iconic!
now you need to check out Carl Palmer's solo in69 or 70

Oh this sounds cool
SUPERPHONIC snare.
BOTH!!!!!
Thanks for showing some more Bonzo. Makes me feel young again. You want percussionist? Ruth Underwood. Bonham's a drummer's drummer.
John Henry Bonham was a MUSICIAN/Percussionist.
I just call him the Beast. It seems like he's beating the brakes off the drums but in actuality if you listen he has a light touch believe it or not, by watching it. He actually had a double bass in mind but the band hit it from him
Bonzo the best there was ,,, that's why Zep defunked you could never replace Bonzo he was the machine that drove Zep ...
Talk about a whale of a performance!
😂
Love this!
He's telling a story
Thank you for this excellent reaction! I suggest you check out Anderson .Paak. He is an excellent drummer, rapper, and singer. “ Put Me Through” would be a good song to check out.

You must do a reaction to Ginger Baker next. You will hear a lot of similarity between them.
Exactly. Also, he tuned the bottom head tighter than the top for full resonance.
What was he 20, 21 here? Someone will know.

Bonham should buy eternal drinks for their heavenly eternity to Joe Morello, drummer for the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
