What monster? Pumpkin was no monster. He was no Weinstein, no Epstein. What did Jerry Langford do to get where he was? Nothing sketchy, ever? Pupkin was a guy with a dream, no different from millions of other people, and if he'd gotten his big break, he never would've done anything illegal at all.
Rita is played by DeNiro's then-wife, Diahann Abbott, she did a great job even thought it wasn't a big role. Everyone in this movie gave a stellar perforance--DeNiro, Abbott, Bernard, Lewis. A very underrated film and rarely on TV--a shame!
I heard that Scorsese feels DeNiro gave his best performance in this movie. "The King of Comedy" never got the publicity it deserved, everyone in it was fantastic. Did you guys know that Rita (Diahann Abbott) was DeNiro's wife at the time? I also heard that Johnny Carson was offered the part of the talk-show host but turned it down because he didn't want to give anyone ideas. Jerry Lewis did a great job, his scene finding Rupert in his house was improvised.
DeNiro rarely if ever plays actual tough guys. He plays "tough guys" for sure. But his characters almost always have turmoil, and are sensitive, and insecure.
I think in a deleted scene, that guy tries to hit on Rupert's date, and it doesn't work out. So he's probably mocking him out of jealousy, and they just left it in because it was funny.
This is my favourite scene ! That guy sat behind rupert is so funny ! i wish i could go to a restaurant and see someone doing that, lol ! could you please upload any of the scenes with marsha ( sandra bernhard ) in it aswell ? and also the scene where rita and rupert go to jerry's house ? There are so many scenes to choose from, it would be great if the whole movie was uploaded, but that may take too much time.
LOL. That's Woody Allen...(he's a personal friend of mine)...every time I hear a 'star' say something like this during interviews I think of this scene... I'm looking at you, Michael Winner.
De Niro had a part in both films. "Joker" is in some ways more subversive, because it managed to sneak in the same idea as part of a superhero franchise, meaning it had a much bigger audience.
I think that she is also in Taxi Driver, when Travis, Deniro, goes into the movie theater and attempts to flirt with her at the counter, but to no avail.
Rupert is always performing to an imaginary audience. The man talks to cardboard celebrities in his bedroom! One De Niro's finest performances. De Niro is NOT hamming uo this role. It's the character's delusional personality. De Niro nailed this one. I can't think of another actor who could make Pupkin so, pathetic, scary, menacing, sadly sweet, naive, annoying and inspiring, all at once. Such a multi layered performance.
My mom bought me one cuz it was in the $5 bin at best buy. It's probably the most underrated scorcese film. They shot it right after taxi driver. In a sense, Scorcese says that Rupert Pupkin may be more dangerous than travis bickle.
@Jitpring I absolutely thing that too. The reason it wasnt a great success is because the vast majority of people dont have the appreciation for black humour or recognise the talent that made up this film. I modelled myself around Rupert Pumpkin. If you want something bad enough go get it even if it means embarrassing yourself because its better to be a king for a night, than a smuck for a lifetime.
I feel like taxi driver and king of comedy are film twins. Both about delves into insanity taxi driver a violent insanity but king of comedy is more delusions of grandeur
definitely in de niros top 3 performances up there with vito corleone, travis bickle, jake la motta. de niro was the MAN! i love this film and someone else mentioned the similarities between this performace and ricky gervais' david brent - eerie parallels although this character is far more deranged!
ive never seen the movie but i definetly wanna watch this you know an actor is great when he can act like such a creepy nerd hittin on a girl and still make you love him thats why de niro is one of the greats
What is sick about Rupert's Talent Registry is that Rupert himself probably signed all the names in it to impress Rita and anyone else who he might want to impress. That is the mark of the real wanna-be sicko. Kinda like John Hinkley trying to impress Jodi Foster.
@howsaboutno I don't know. We, the veiwers, are already aware how crazy rupert is to us, and presumbably everyone around him. It just makes the bystander seem stupid and crazy. He's mugging to no one! I wonder if Scorcese adressed this scene in interview or commentary.
i think its for the dry/black humoured people. This film was a flop along with Cable Guy. Both films were dark humoured but the majority of audiences arent. Hence great cinematic films like this one will never get the recognition it deserves.
Did Rupert succeed in getting to the place he wanted to be? Im speaking about the character of Rupert not how the writer wanted to portray celebrity obsession.
@howsaboutno Maury. Ok. But I just don't get why he's mugging to the camera like that. He's sitting alone but making fun of Pupkin us, the viewers, it seems. I'm wondering if anyone knows why Scorsese put that in. It seems irrelevant and distracting from the scene.
I saw this very recently and was just floored by De Niro's performance - you almost find yourself in love for Rupert - the pathetic loser that he portrays!
I thought the guy behind was supposed to represent the copy-cat nature of the media buisness, even from losers like Pupkin. This also happens in a scene when Jerry picks up a phone, and behind him is a TV playing a movie with a guy talking on the phone.
The most underrated film in the history of cinema and ever will be.
Rupert Pupkin is Travis Bickle's alter ego. The story is essentially the same as Taxi Driver's--just turned inside out and made into a great comedy.
My favorite and most watched film of all time.
Rupert could teach us that anything is possible if you willing to pay the price.
This is arguably his greatest performance
My thoughts exactly. He's just as terrifying as Travis Bickle in my opinion, he just isn't violent. I love this film, it's so underrated.
He's as much a victim as a monster.
Sorry, just wanted to reply to a twelve year old comment. Unusual on TH-cam. :)
You can totally see the character personality and mannerisms with this and Joaquin Phoenix's Joker.
Opie and Anthony put me onto this back awhile and I still rewatch this movie to this day lol
SCORCH 😂
Rita is played by DeNiro's then-wife, Diahann Abbott, she did a great job even thought it wasn't a big role. Everyone in this movie gave a stellar perforance--DeNiro, Abbott, Bernard, Lewis. A very underrated film and rarely on TV--a shame!
We're all Rupert Pupkin now.
And there's no going back unfortunately...
That's Morrie from GoodFellas!
Haven't seen this movie before, but from what parts I have seen, this looks like one hell of a movie for de Niro and Scorsese. Damn good.
I haven't seen this, but now I really really want to. De Niro's amazingly versatile.
one of de niro's best performances !!! pure genius
i think this is the greatest performance of all time.
amazing performance, such an underated movie
Opie and Anthony replays brought me here
Love the guy in the background behind deniro. Maury from goodfellas
I heard that Scorsese feels DeNiro gave his best performance in this movie. "The King of Comedy" never got the publicity it deserved, everyone in it was fantastic. It's the comedy version of taxi driver.
Its funny to see DeNiro portraiting that kind of a character...
Not tough guy at all.
DeNiro rarely if ever plays actual tough guys. He plays "tough guys" for sure. But his characters almost always have turmoil, and are sensitive, and insecure.
Sensational acting...De Niro is amazing in this movie
The man who is mocking DeNiro in this scene is the wigsman from Goodfellas...
'You should be sorry! Where is my fucking money"
so good but so painful to watch...
please upload the scenes where Rupert is in his basement and his mom is yelling at him!
I haven't seen the movie but just from this scene I will check it out because DeNiro seems brilliant in this role.
LOL at the guy behind Rupert!
16 years late but that’s Martin Scorsese lip syncing the lines lol
No it Is not @@CalebHatcher25
@erniehead
He's imitating Rupert purposely.
Apparently it was something Scorsese put into the script
I think in a deleted scene, that guy tries to hit on Rupert's date, and it doesn't work out. So he's probably mocking him out of jealousy, and they just left it in because it was funny.

Not lately!
Definately see it. It is a classic!
This movie totally is a rip off of Joker.... oh, wait
De Niro had a part in both films. "Joker" is in some ways more subversive, because it managed to sneak in the same idea as part of a superhero franchise, meaning it had a much bigger audience.

@Jessica Buttgereit ain't that the truth
Hey could you upload the scene where Pupkin is pretending to talk to Langford in the restaurant?
WWAAK: spot on!! precisely my thought while I was watching the film. Amazing actor, shame he seems to have lost track of it recently.
Vito Corleone, Travis Bickle, Jake La Motta, Jimmy Conway and Rupert Pupkin from the SAME guy?!
Keep them facts coming...this film is my favourite of all time.
the dramatic irony here is that the woman was actuallyDe Niro's real life wife Dianne Ahbott- In case any1 didn't know
Yh thats right she is
it may be a stupid question but whos that in the background on the right mocking de niro?
Pupkin reminds me of Jim Norton.
One of the best movies of the 80s.
I fucking love it!
Not really a stupid question. It's Chuck Low. Always loved this scene.
He has great wigs.
yea when i saw that for the first time i thought that was one of the most brilliant things ever
ill post it tonight
happy new year
his name was Morrie.
I never understood the guy in the background making fun of Deniro. What's that about?
yeah that's right, but she doesn't cut it in this film.
@creolelady182 actually she wasn't actually his wife at the time. They actually separated before this movie.
ill post it today:)
happy new year
Such a great film. De Niro is the greatest.
OMG what is that guy doingi n the background at 3:28??? Why didn't I notice it before?
This actress was his real life wife then. deniro had a thing for Black women
She's gorgeous!
My mom bought me one cuz it was in the $5 bin at best buy. It's probably the most underrated scorcese film. They shot it right after taxi driver. In a sense, Scorcese says that Rupert Pupkin may be more dangerous than travis bickle.
you are right dude

@sLAUGHTER115 Yeah, and in a deleted scene the guy comes and gives her his number while Rupert is away.
didnt even notice lol
Right after taxi driver? no, they shot it right after raging bull, 2 years after to be exact.
It reminds me a lot of Taxi Driver. A little too much, actually.
I feel like taxi driver and king of comedy are film twins. Both about delves into insanity taxi driver a violent insanity but king of comedy is more delusions of grandeur

@WWAAK you left behind Michael Vronsky another great character

ive never seen the movie but i definetly wanna watch this
you know an actor is great when he can act like such a creepy nerd hittin on a girl and still make you love him
thats why de niro is one of the greats
I heard that this film was more sucessful in the U.K than it was in America...
this movie was funny
I believe the girl was his real wife off screen.
is this film worth buying? is it a comedy or action or what?
Amen.
@ 0:40 is that maury from goodfellas walking by?
Is that Mike Lindell the pillow king?
which happens to be de niro's ex-wife also. (diahnne abbott)
@WWAAK Don't forget about Ace Rothstein, something McCully, and the Cape fear guy.
What is sick about Rupert's Talent Registry is that Rupert himself probably signed all the names in it to impress Rita and anyone else who he might want to impress. That is the mark of the real wanna-be sicko. Kinda like John Hinkley trying to impress Jodi Foster.
Chuck Low scenebombing.
great
Maury fucking rules!! Louis CK RULES!! O&A RULES!!
@MyAaron1990 yeah, shes the girl working in the porno theater.
Louis CK wants to know what the fuck Maury thinks he's doing!
its the wig guy from goodfellas
There is one thing about Rupert, he has desire but no talent, like Ed Wood. Got to love him for that.
@howsaboutno
I don't know. We, the veiwers, are already aware how crazy rupert is to us, and presumbably everyone around him. It just makes the bystander seem stupid and crazy. He's mugging to no one! I wonder if Scorcese adressed this scene in interview or commentary.

The Bronx tale profiled Italian / Black romance taboos of the 60's
@howsaboutno
Maury. Ok. But I just don't get why he's mugging to the camera like that.
He's sitting alone but making fun of Pupkin us, the viewers, it seems. I'm wondering if anyone knows why Scorsese put that in. It seems irrelevant and distracting from the scene.
@CMink7777 Neil Macauley from Heat.
I saw this very recently and was just floored by De Niro's performance - you almost find yourself in love for Rupert - the pathetic loser that he portrays!
this woman was diahann abott one of his wife!
@burtonrules123 What? It's impossible not to like Taxi Driver! Why do you tink it sucks?
@captainkill1 Almost as good as the dialogue between Turk and Rooster in Righteous Kill...
The book was completely blank. Is that a joke?
@icekoldnigga
yes good spot
I thought the guy behind was supposed to represent the copy-cat nature of the media buisness, even from losers like Pupkin. This also happens in a scene when Jerry picks up a phone, and behind him is a TV playing a movie with a guy talking on the phone.
It is often mispronounced as well as misspelled.
@burtonrules123 Only because you think Burton rules.
