    Awesome video! But I have a question: we don’t have a smart tv. We have an old Apple Mac desk top computer with which we watched cable via the internet providers tv streaming service. How can we use your method with our current equipment? Our Mac computer is currently running on 10.13.6 and can’t be updated with any newer software 😢. And these apps, such as Pluto, how much memory or Ram do they take up when you download them? Many thanks for your help!

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      Hi! Try just opening a browser then going to Pluto.TV I think that should work regardless of the age of your computer. You can watch the paid subscription channels through your browser too (ex Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime video) 😊

    What equipment (cable or cords) would I need to have an antenna, A fire (or Roku) stick, and DVD, and VHS. Is it possible to have all that hooked up to the TV at once? How would I do that?

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      To get access to free local tv channels all you need is a digital TV antenna. It plugs into your TV. Here's the low cost antenna I use on Amazon: amzn.to/3LPPbh4.
      Check your TV to see how many HDMI ports (plug-in openings) you have. Some TV's have 4 or 5 now. But, if you only have 2, then DVD and VHS can just be plugged in when you need them. You can keep an antenna, Fire stick or Roku plugged in to ports most of the time.
      I hope this helped. :) Check out my blog post about how to cut the cord for more details: www.abbottsathome.com/cut-the-cord-with-cable-watch-tv-for-free/

    I don't have a smart tv and interpreted your Roku 4 stick the necessary thing to workaround. However, I was wondering why is it necessary to have a smart tv? Can't you tether your laptop or phone and stream that way without your TV being a Smart TV?

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      I think Smart TV’s just mean they have the software to connect to the internet or phones, laptops, etc and then perform the work. I’m not sure older TV’s can do that. You’d need special equipment. The Roku stick just provides an easy to use interface for connecting to streaming apps. 👍😊😊

    • @gwillis01

      The thing that makes a TV "smart" is the fact that the internal software can quickly and easily connect to the internet.

    Nice but we are in West North Carolina and only one major network is in Asheville. The others are in SC or TN and with the mountains it makes it hard to get broadcasts without a high, directional antenna. We pay $175 for TV Internet and Phone and I'd love to drop the TV but each network has at least one program my wife wants to watch. I think to turn off TV you have to d it for at least 60 days so there is no savings doing it when you go one vacation.

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      Can you get high speed internet in the mountains?? You can stream TV with just the internet. But, I’d test whether or not you like the free TV options on Roku before canceling cable or direct tv. 👍

    Does this work for Canada

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      I would think so. Roku is one of the top streaming sticks in Canada too. The CBC also has a TH-cam channel www.youtube.com/@CBCTheNational/videos. You could search for other news on TH-cam too. Most of them will have a channel. All of the other streaming apps should work the same for you too. :)

    You forgot to cover one very important topic. My cable plan includes a DVR for recording shows. Do any free streaming services offer free cloud recording?

    • @AbbottsAtHome

      I thought I’d miss my DVR when I quit cable. But now all of the shows I watch are available to stream anytime. You don’t really need a DVR. If I like a show, ex. Chicago PD, I just go to the Peacock app (since they make the show) and I can see any episode from all of the seasons plus new ones as they come out. If you need to DVR a sporting event that you can’t watch on an app you subscribe to, I think you can buy a simple DVR on Amazon that can be programmed to record off your live tv. 👍
