Sling is a waste of money. Just like most streaming services they don't offer any movies that you couldn't get for free somewhere else. If you want movies checkout the Roku channel or just get a DVD player and a library card, or sign up for Amazon Prime. Amazon prime has the same fee less movies as everyone else but you also get free shipping on online orders for only $125 per year.
We did exactly what you mentioned. Ironically we aren't saving a whole lot but we have more options and more freedom. Xfinity was charging way too much for less service. We even negotiated on our internet and also made sure there are no data caps.
Hi Michael, Love your channel. Great info! I haven't had cable since the early 2000's. I use an Antenna for local Digital Broadcast and a Roku, Amazon Fire TV box and Apple TV if I want to watch anything on an Actual TV set. It's nice that all of these streaming services can be watched on a Laptop, Tablet or Smart phone.
We been doing this since 2012. Ten years. Also add a yagi hd antenna with a separate signal Amp for free local channels. Don't get an antenna with a built-in Amp because electronics don't last long outside and when it goes so does your antenna. Mouse pad antenna are ok for rental properties. You will have to move the antenna around to find the peak signal and rescan your TV a few times but the savings is worth it.
I just cut the cord completely yesterday. Direct TV prices are ridiculous for what I really need it for. Literally 3 channels and local channels (which I’m using Locast for). But I think I need a better streaming device because Firestick is just too laggy for me. I’m thinking of this Roku you mention here. I do have Apple TV box in the living room, but those are real pricey
I live in rural area and our only internet provider is our local independent phone company. We have had the same 8 Mbps plan for 10 years now and it still works for all of our needs. Three of us on our phones using wi-fi along with streaming through Roku at the same time and rarely does it lag or buffer. We subscribe to 6 streaming services and use them a lot so luckily our provider offers unlimited data and no throttling.
Thanks Michael for this excellent channel on cutting the cord! would you happen to have suggestions for Canada? Not sure if you want to do a video on us or recommend someone. Thanks again I have learned a lot
This was a very excellent video. I am definitely going to cut the cord. My basic cable and Internet has gone up 100%. I am going to get TH-cam TV. Do I need to have AT&T or someone else for my Internet provider or could I just use Roku?
When you sign up for trials go into the account service page asap and just cancel it so you don't forget as it will remain active until the expiration of the trial as people forget all the time.
A couple additional things I would include is to check if you can get local TV with an antenna. If so, you don't need a streaming service that includes it if you want local channels. You can also get a streaming box for the antenna, and get the local stations on all your streaming devices, plus your mobile phone and tablet. Plus, you can DVR local TV from an antenna with many of these devices. And also look at the various streaming apps for some of the networks. Many of those are free, and will show the latest episodes a day or week after they first air. When I first cut the cord, I found the History Channel app had the last 5 episodes of "Vikings" (which was the only show I really watched on that channel) for free, so I didn't have to worry about a streaming TV service that included that channel. And Peacock (free basic service) has SNL a week after it first airs (higher tiers that you pay for have it next day). Last, don't forget to check with your cable TV provider to see if they have streaming services that might fit your needs. I was with Spectrum, and found that if you have Internet through them, you could get a streaming service for $15 a month that was pretty similar to Philo.
These are great tips and things I agree with 100%! But I made this beginner's guide simple for a reason -- there are so many choices. Once people make the first step, they can take the second. And the antenna tip is a very good one because it will maximize savings!
Great step by step tutorial Michael! 👍👍👍 I have some relatives who have been looking to drop satellite TV and start streaming. I'm definately going to recommend this video to them.
Hi Michael! Thank you so much for this video. I was truly becoming overwhelmed at the thought of cutting my cable but I have to do it and I feel so much better. I have a roku and sony tv. I watch regular TH-cam, netflix and prime on both of them. Do I need the streaming device for my just for the Sony TV?
Sounds like you already have things up and running! I recommend that people use a streaming device instead of the TV’s platform usually, but that’s an option. What matters is that you can access all of your apps!
I have a new TV in the basement for direct streaming but watch my upstairs/older TV most often. Do I need a Roku to watch upstairs even if I "set up" my streaming account on the newer TV?
Very informative ! You were very clear and to the point ! I have a question 🙋♀️ we have two smart TVs. Do I need to buy a Roku for each tv or will both TVs operate from one Roku device ? Thank you so much 😊
I recommend one Roku per TV set so you don't have to move the Roku between rooms. Now if you have a Samsung or LG smart TV, you could use the operating system already on your TV set -- but it's a better experience with a Roku, Fire TV Stick, etc.
@@MichaelSaves ty so much for the reply! I really appreciate it. My husband is 74 and I am trying to make this as easy for him as possible and I think Roku would be the best way to go . Your videos have helped so much ! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You will use more data with streaming. Most people stay under the cap (if they have a cap), but something to monitor. Log in to your ISP and see how much data you're using now against the cap!
@@MichaelSaves Thanks. I hadn't realized that until after I bought a Roku. But then my cap seems pretty high and I rarely even come close to it despite what I would call heavy internet usage.
I am on my way to cutting the cord. I will follow all the steps you advised Michael. July cable for basic, internet, wifi, no phone 182.20....Done! I do have a Roku on the bedroom tv and I have Buffering a lot. what do you recommend?. Thanks in advance!
What's your internet speed? Is it possible that your bedroom is far away from the modem/router? You could purchase a cheap Wi-Fi range extender. That helped at my mother's house where the primary bedroom is on the opposite side of the house where the modem/router is located.
I have a Roku or another device (Fire TV, Chromecast) for each TV. If you have a smart TV, many apps may be preinstalled. You don't necessarily need a Roku then, but you'll find a Roku is easier to use. For example, I have a Samsung TV. Many apps are installed are available, but the Samsung remote is difficult to use compared to a Roku or another streaming stick.
I have cut the cord I have had you tube tv and I decided to cut you tube tv now I need to find a better option. I do pat for you tube premium and been watching some of my favorite stuff on there.
Great info. I have the Samsung Frame TV, which has the cords hidden in the wall. The TV is brand new. Would I be able to expedite Roku/TH-cam TV without having to worry about exposing the new Roku cord? In other words, set it up with plugging anything new in?
If you have a Samsung Frame TV, you can use the Samsung interface instead of a Roku if you don't want to deal with any more cords. The TH-cam TV app is on your Samsung.
Thanks for easy to understand reasons to cut the cable. Just one more question though as I have both an amazon stick with remote and a roku . With three tv's which one should I use to set up you tube and is it necessary to take the remote to whichever tv you are using???
Ideally you want one streaming stick per TV, but if you have a smart TV check to see if your favorite apps are available straight from the TV interface. Or just buy a third stick on sale. Then just keep the remote in the room with the TV where you connected the stick. TH-cam is available on both Roku and Fire TV, same with TH-cam TV. Happy streaming!
I agree. I signed up just in time TH-cam TV on my Roku. Just wondering if I will be able to watch TH-cam TV on my older TV with the Fire Stick. By the way I notice that I need an Amazon account. Do I have to pay for the Amazon account?
Great video Michael but I have a question. My TV doesn't support You Tube TV as it is 1 yr. too old. I will purchase Roku or the Firestick so I can try You Tube tv out. Do I disconnect the Comcast plug that fits into the HDM1 outlet which connects to the Comcast cable box so I can plug in Roku during this trial period.
In Australia, we have a cable service called Foxtel. I only really use it for watching sports and pro wrestling. The cost for the basic package and the sport add on is $75 a month. Luckily, Foxtel has a sports streaming service called Kayo which is only $25 a month and it gives you all of the same sports that are already on Foxtel, including the weekly wrestling shows like Raw, Smackdown and NXT
Great video! Thanks for the info! Do you have recommendation on using a Chromecast dongle in addition to a FireTV stick on a Samsung SmartTV to get Peacock streaming?
The new Chromecast is an AWESOME device. I use it every day. It doesn't have as many apps as Roku, but it has the major ones and you can always play content from your phone or computer to your TV set. store.google.com/us/product/chromecast_google_tv
Not if the smart TV has all of your favorite apps on its interface. I like getting a Roku anyway because there are more apps available, but your smart TV may have you covered. Up to you!
I have cable however I would like to set up a xtra tv for watching just smart tv do you have any suggestions for this that will help us watch football in that location during football season?
You can get a good modem/router combo for around $100 to $150. Start your internet provider and get their list of compatible modem/router combos. Then, maybe check reviews of the models on Amazon. If your internet plan has 100 Mbps or around that, it should be fine for several devices!
Cable is costing me almost $200 a month! So, your video was VERY helpful. Gonna cut the cord soon! QUESTION: I am thinking about TH-cam TV, but if Roku does not support, are Fire TV and AppleTV feasible alternatives?
Yes those are good alternatives to Roku. For now you can access TH-cam TV through the main Roku app. I have a video on that. So if you already have a Roku try that !
Hi Michael, great video. I like the idea of going to TH-cam TV, it seems like it can be a very easy transition. Currently, I have ChromeCast (built-in) into the TV in the family room, and since I already have a Google Chromecast device for a second TV, do I need a Roku Premiere or can I get away without it? Also, I have standalone subscriptions with Amazon Prime, MLB Channel, Disney Plus/Hulu & Netflix (and MIcrosoft Office) is there a way I can purchase them in a bundle to save further. I appreciate your help!
Hi Rick. I have an updated video with my 2022 advice here: th-cam.com/video/OD3Xw9dmriM/w-d-xo.html. To answer your questions, no you don't need a new Roku. (I now recommend the newer Roku Express 4K+, not Premiere.) But you can use the Chromecast devices you already have and they'll work great with TH-cam TV. I don't know of any way to bundle the other subscriptions that you have, unfortunately. But TH-cam TV will take care of the live TV piece.
Hello. I have a question. I’m exploring options to cut the big boys off, however, when I stream from my PC I get severe lag or mouth doesn’t match words. What do I need to upgrade to resolve this?
Have you checked your internet connection? Try Speedtest.net. Focus on the download speed and the ping/latency. Then, call up your internet service provider and tell them the results. If the ping is too high, it could lead to those issues.
My father cut the cord with spectrum in 2019. He was paying $185 a month for TV and internet, and that was getting to be pretty expensive. And he only had 1 DVR. He had spectrum from 2017-2019.
Sure, I can add to my list. Ethernet is usually faster and closer to the speed that you're paying for. But Wi-Fi is simple and you can connect to various types of devices wirelessly.
Tip, if you have a modestly priced 4k tv, the NVidia Shield in tube form has a graphics card in it and will increase the upscaling and picture quality significantly to make super hd look more like 4k, it is 150 dollars though but a great android device that runs them all, also very fast.
Hi Michael, I'm on a TH-cam TV trial using a flat screen (non-smart) TV with Roku and am having a few issues that seem direly wrong. > Whenever changing channels, it's requiring entering an access code on a computer or wireless device to sign into the channels. > It's also requiring adding an app for each channel. > A football game was allegedly being recorded and saved to the video library. When played back, it only showed snippets of a few highlights. > One channel that's supposed to be included offers a Free Trial. It's like the system doesn't even know I'm a user! This has been an extremely frustrating experience 😡. At this point, the trial runs out this weekend. I will have to renew Verizon for another month until I find a workable solution. Any insights on what could be wrong and how to correct would be deeply appreciated.
This should not be happening. Did you sign in to TH-cam TV from the account you signed up with? I would contact TH-cam TV support: th-cam.com/video/1U-c_ujSJ2c/w-d-xo.html
Great video. Only thing I would add is monitor your internet data usage. Cutting the cord and streaming ALL your tv needs through your internet will likely have an impact on your data usage. Comcast for example has a data cap of 1.2 TB. It is possible (though for most probably unlikely) that you may go over that cap and incur additional fees should you choose to stream ALL of your tv services. Comcast does have an unlimited data option for an additional 30.00 a month. For Comcast users you can check your usage through the website or the app on your phone or tablet.
I want to watch Texas Rangers Baseball from FoxSportSouthwest. How do I do that? I have an indoor TV Antenna & Roku device. Is that all I need & how do I set it up?
@@MichaelSaves I thought AT&T TV is no longer available. I get a listing of only Direct TV which I have never had. So confusing. Thanks for your tips. I watch as much as I can...haven't cut the cord yet. Working on it. I do so much research before I do anything. 😊
@@ShirlBussman Hi! AT&T is no longer available, but I cannot take down all of my videos that mention the old name. Otherwise, I would have no income. :-) I do try to update things and just produced a DIRECTV STREAM review. That is the new name for AT&T TV. Here it is! th-cam.com/video/BZrW9D0FEDM/w-d-xo.html
Cable company's dont care because they just raise their prices on internet, and no one can do anything about it as long as they have no real competition.
Here's what we like about cable is the menu and the E-Z guide. Amazon fire stick, Apple TV, Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers. Otherwise, it's feels like you're blindfolded and you just pick any random program and waste your time.
Michael, do you have a video out for compatible routers? I'm returning my equipment to Xfinity tomorrow and would like to order my own router. I've been looking at videos but I can't seem to decide in which direction to go.
Hi there. I have this old video: th-cam.com/video/t1o2L_Q7pYE/w-d-xo.html. Your internet provider should have a list of compatible routers. The ones that have a router and modem are often referred to as gateways. The one I referenced in that video was $100 and worked great. But some more expensive ones could get you faster speeds. Depends on the internet plan you're paying for. Good luck.
Put up a UHF/VHF antenna and watching what’s already free to view? No fees no internet no boxes: just connect the tv with the antenna. Less channels but no fixed expenses
But I’m clueless on choosing a router and modem. I don’t want to rent any equipment and I have no idea what I need. Other than that this was very informative.
Your interest provider should have a list online of compatible gateways. I would just research them on Amazon. The one I bought was $100, a Motorola. Works great.
I went from 8 satellite receivers to now only 3 receivers. Negotiating a better price for the channels I do have. With the food and gas ⛽️ prices higher than ever it’s time to rethink my spending on everything.
I currently have direct tv been with them for yours now I've been looking on the internet but can't find a straight answer if I would pay an etf for canceling because I heard that you may get auto enrolled once your contract expires.
TH-cam TV or DIRECTV STREAM. With DIRECTV STREAM, you can easily change channels with the remote. They have their own device as well with a number pad. michaelsaves.com/streaming/directv-stream-review/
@@michaelrobb9708 I have a video I just did on free services. She may like some of them. I use a Roku, but many are available with other streaming players.
Cut the cord 2 yrs ago.....don't miss it.....question,my internet is AT&T which I want to drop,I have unlimited data on phone, couldn't I stream on phone and cast it to tv when I want a larger image?
Agree once a certain data is reached they will slow you down unless you have a specified service that will not slow it down. It’s worth keeping internet.
I have cut the cord in 2019....I will never go back to spectrum....all my TV is on the Internet .... though my phone.....it is great 👍....I don't use any pay service or cable....and DVDs and Blu-rays....I don't miss cable at all 😮
So you’re saying I don’t need 300mbps to stream and work from home? I could save like $20 a month going down to 200. that’s like 2-3 streaming services I could have...
Yes. I have worked from home for years with plans ranging from 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps. If you have a large household with 5+ people connected at all times or someone who is a gamer, maybe 300-400 Mbps is necessary. Call your ISP and ask them about your specific situation.
I’m about to do it got and love the TH-cam TV and got TiVo remotes for my non smart tvs now the problem is getting a human on the phone to disconnect it’s almost impossible I might do a TH-cam about disconnecting how impossible it is with Verizon Fios to talk to a human.
@@MichaelSaves I pay about 104 a month for cable and tv they told me it would be 76 just for internet a month so atm I’m wondering if I just stay with what I have.
Comcast has Portland Trail Blazers fans by the cahones. The only channel you can watch them on comes from xfinity except for nationally broadcast games which are rare.
The best thing to do is contact your internet service provider and ask them. They may have a list online of compatible modem/router combos - they’re often called gateways. Mine was about $100.
This is just my how to guide for beginners! Glad you found something you like. I have Fire TV, Chromecast, Roku and others. They all have pros and cons! I was keeping it simple for beginners.
@@metal1mark73 TiVo Stream 4K is great. Surprised me. However, I got the Chromecast With Google TV (it has a remote) shortly after and prefer that. Similar interface. The Chromecast remote is smaller. But if you like Amazon, no need to switch away. It’s good too.

As of October 2021 Roku no longer supports the TH-cam TV app. Therefore, I went with Chromecast. Really enjoy the extra features it’s got. 🙋🏻♀️
Thanks!
Thank you!
@@MichaelSaves With these apps, do I have to register for each one?
@@ElleMarieF23 usually. But some of the free ones don’t require signing up
@@MichaelSaves Thank you so much! You have put my mind at ease! 😊
Thanks for the help
Very good information
Does streaming which uses the internet affect your Data cap?
You will use more data with streaming. Most people stay under the cap (if they have a cap), but something to monitor. Log in to your ISP and see how much data you're using now against the cap!
@@MichaelSaves Thanks. I hadn't realized that until after I bought a Roku. But then my cap seems pretty high and I rarely even come close to it despite what I would call heavy internet usage.
@@StevenTorrey yes mostly an issue for larger households (6+) with lots of connected devices.
I have Roku TV, Pluto TV, and Plex for live programming.
Roku is free. If you mean Roku TV that is also free unless you opt to add the premium channels such as HBO or Showtime.
@Dc A-N-D-Y Nothing for the roku except the purchase price for the device.
Do yo need a ROKU device for each TV ? Great content.
A lot of people are doing the same!
Thank you for info. I'm senior citizen & tired of paying 217. A month, but nervous about streaming. I plan on getting Roku..
Hi Debra. I think that's smart. Roku Express 4K+ is on sale for $25 right now. That's the one I would get first.
I’m so looking forward to cutting the chord. 155 dollars for my bundle and it’s annoying me.
I’m so tired of Comcast over changing every month 265.00 😩to much!!!
I hear you I was paying over 250 a month myself! I prefer streaming now way better!
I’m currently paying $289 a month….. trying to cut the cord!
WOW! That’s way too high. Never heard that high before 😢😢😢😢😢😢
That's about right if you got movie channels. 😢
For the Roku, you plug into an HDMI on the back of your TV. Does your TV have only one HDMI input? Most have 2 or sometimes even 3!
MIchael. I have one more question for you. If I already have a "Smart-TV" I wouldn't need to do the preliminary ROKU or FIRESTICK testing would I ??
Correct. As long as your smart TV’s interface has all the apps you want. Many of them don’t. That’s another reason why people get a Roku.
I got a smart TV..Will I need the roku?
Not if the smart TV has all of your favorite apps on its interface. I like getting a Roku anyway because there are more apps available, but your smart TV may have you covered. Up to you!
Thank you!
I have cable however I would like to set up a xtra tv for watching just smart tv do you have any suggestions for this that will help us watch football in that location during football season?
how would this work with a roku Tv itself like a TLC and suggestions ,ThankYou
Great Help Michael! Quick question...do you cover what a good Modem and Router consist of and cost for a home with several streaming devices?
You can get a good modem/router combo for around $100 to $150. Start your internet provider and get their list of compatible modem/router combos. Then, maybe check reviews of the models on Amazon. If your internet plan has 100 Mbps or around that, it should be fine for several devices!
Thanks so much for the info!
@@MichaelSaves I'm confused on buying just a modem vs a modem and a router. Could you shed some light? TY!
@@dm4466 you will want Wi-Fi so you want a modem/router combination. They’re known as gateways.
Oops. My apologies. I already asked you my earlier question. So question #3 is: Is there any programing / setup to do after you cut the cord?
This would make my equipment such as radio control remote, receiver, surround sound obsolete??
8:53 my favorite part!!
👍🤣🤣🤣
I love Roku but they still have not resolved the issue with TH-cam TV.
Michael, I would like to know where to stream the weather channel if I cut the cord? Thanks
Frndly TV has it for $6.99 in its skinny bundle. fuboTV also has it in the $65 total cable TV replacement plan.
Hi, good info and just sub. After cutting the cord are there DVRs I can use with live streaming??
Hi Jim. TH-cam TV comes with unlimited cloud DVR, so you don't need separate equipment. Hulu Live, Sling TV and the others also have cloud DVR.
@@MichaelSaves Are there a physical dvr option? Thanks
@@jimtalor7971 yes i have TiVo Romaio OTA. There is also Tablo and Silicon dust tuners with a dvr features for antenna tv.
What can I use to view Discovery+? Amazon? Roku? or do I need cable tv?
I have a video with some details! I use a Roku th-cam.com/video/Iec4L6pmEMw/w-d-xo.html
My father cut the cord with spectrum in 2019. He was paying $185 a month for TV and internet, and that was getting to be pretty expensive. And he only had 1 DVR. He had spectrum from 2017-2019.
Why do ppl need DVR? Shows show up days later on on demand.
Can you do a video explaining the difference in data for wifi streaming and ethernet streaming there is a difference
Hello Michael. IF I purchase a "non-xfinity" Gateway / Router, is it just a matter of plug-in and play or is there some programming to be done?
There are instructions to follow. You will need to call your internet provider to finish setup.
Yes good point
I want to watch Texas Rangers Baseball from FoxSportSouthwest. How do I do that? I have an indoor TV Antenna & Roku device. Is that all I need & how do I set it up?
AT&T TV has that network. Most streaming services do not. You can use your Roku with AT&T TV.
@@MichaelSaves I thought AT&T TV is no longer available. I get a listing

@@MichaelSaves Thanks, I will watch it. 😊
Cable company's dont care because they just raise their prices on internet, and no one can do anything about it as long as they have no real competition.
Here's what we like about cable is the menu and the E-Z guide. Amazon fire stick, Apple TV,
Not sure about Roku they don't have guides that come up on the screen like the cable. we like a guide on the screen like what cable offers.
Good luck.
I heard Lemo has 3000 channels and you can use a amazon fire stick with it for $30 a month. Do you know anything about this??
What if I already have a "smart TV" that streams? Would I still need something like ROKU?
No! Not if it has all of your favorite apps. You can use the smart TV interface
@@MichaelSaves So all I would need is a good internet connection with a wi-fi box/router????
Thank you so much!

5 years now
So you’re saying I don’t need 300mbps to stream and work from home? I could save like $20 a month going down to 200. that’s like 2-3 streaming services I could have...
Yes. I have worked from home for years with plans ranging from 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps. If you have a large household with 5+ people connected at all times or someone who is a gamer, maybe 300-400 Mbps is necessary. Call your ISP and ask them about your specific situation.
