i like it. No dirty laundry bags to store. Wash clothes you used that day. Don't need as much clothes since there won"t be a dirty pile. You will need to store more water a gallon per wash, not so bad. Maybe look into fitting a clean water tank (10/20+ gal) above passenger seat area some tanks have plumbing kits with it. Maybe RV dealers have some ideas about install. :)
In my opinion, the small load doesn't match the pedaling effort. For hand washing, I would rather do it the traditional way: Putting my clothes in a bucket of water and hand wash them one by one
You would waste more water and cloths would be less washed by hand. I also think amount is low but when you travel solo you could wash week worth in 2 loads
I use a basecamp portable electric washing machine and a spin dryer. Both fit in the tub and they both get the job done. They have them at the laundry alternative. Best money spent. The washer will only due 1 queen size sheet though, but all clothes are fine. Had them both for 5 yrs now. If the washer fails, i have a bucket and a plunger to replace it. Cleans your clothes just as well. 👍
Don't pedal so fast. The idea is to tumble the clothes in the tub, which is what cleans them. If you pedal too fast, the centrifugal force keeps them pinned to the sides of the tub. Unless your clothes are really dirty, you could use the same soapy water for multiple loads. Just squeeze your wet soapy clothes out and put them aside and wash another load in the same wash water. Wouldnt recommend doing this with the rinse water though.
You can reuse the water. Wash everything then rinse everything. It would save a bunch of water. It's only 3 minutes a load. wash 10 loads or 40 tshirts i less time that you could do it at the laundry mat
Thanks for doing this review! I was able to determine that this wasn't the portable washer I needed. I appreciate the time/energy you spent on this for us!
@@XwaYdesu I was surprised when the girl on the video said the machine was big for to her liking....then she says it only washed socks and underwears🤣 plus you have to pedal and count....This machine can only be useful for prisoners on death row 😂 by the way congratulations on your move..hope you like your new place
You are not supposed to spin it very fast. As is said in the instruction manual 12 - 20 spins a minute. So that colthes can 'tumble' which cleans them instead of sticking to the walls and uselessly spinning.
I have had my drumi for about 5 months. This is for minimalist with not much clothing and who like to do small loads. The best thing about this machine is the final rinse and spin cycle it helps with ringing the water out of your clothing . You will get a workout using it. And I do hang most of my clothing to air dry. I believe this is designed for people who like to live off the grid or van life. This machine works for me because I do not have many cloths and most are merino wool which dry much faster when I hang to dry.I only do laundry once a week sometimes one load or two loads. This machine is not for everyone, this more for the extreme minimalist.
A large salad spinner works just as well... I should clarify... If you want to do laundry in your van, with no electricity, You can use your bathtub to wash everything (They make hand held agitators that look like plungers,) Then spin with a salad spinner. I have the OXO brand because you pump it rather than turning a handle. Less work, more dry. 💕😃💕
Kimmi Did What? That’s what I’m thinking of doing. I hate spending money on the laundry mat when it’s so easy to wash clothes by hand. It’s just drying that’s hard, but hopefully a salad spinner will work well!
Thanks I'm going to look for an OXO salad spinner then. I hand wash my socks because my laundromat often loses one. So a salad spinner would come in handy for me. I never would have thought of using one for that, thanks!
I learned how to use a wringer washer and do laundry by hand from my grandma. Get a plastic dish basin and some OxiCleen (or generic) in a little warm water. Soak, squeeze, and rub and dirt off. Pull out and squeeze the water out. Put warm fresh water in the tub and rinse with the same method. Wring out excess water and hang to dry. Much cheaper and takes less room in your limited space. Still this is an interesting option using your feet if twisting with both hands isn’t physically possible.
I’m a bachelor who lives alone in a small apartment. i do my laundry just once a week or so, using a pail, but have it done full service (wash-dry-fold) in a laundromat if my schedule is more hectic (or if I’m feeling lazy). The pail I use is around 6 to 7 gallons in size, and a week’s worth of laundry takes just one load. If I used this device, i’d probably have to repeat 4 or 5 times, so i don’t think it’s worth it. But since you bought it already, might as well use it until it breaks.
That method is very rough on the hands & it's nearly impossible to wring most water out, of jeans?! This looks like a BEST solution, at home with no utility expenditure; it pays for itself in the long run compared to the laundromat. 💯🌟👍😊
bh p okay but the price is a bit much- I would just stick to some laundromat that would clean more clothes at a time and just gets the job done without having to peddle or whatever
Maybe a suggestion: Once u drain n rinse, after rinsing n draining I'd keep clothes in it and spin the clothes for about 2 mins, THEN, hang up. Like a spin cycle. Bet it helps. THK U for this!!! Stay safe. LOVE FROM TEXAS
That looks pretty cool and doable actually. Requires very little water and no power. I am seriously considering buying that. Thank you for demonstrating it!
Yoooo!! A great alternative for this is the Scrubba! It washes about the same amount of clothes at once but takes up the space of like, a few reusable grocery bags, and it’s like 40/50 dollars.
Exactly, only difference is hand shaking it of stepping back and forth on it gently rather than the spinning motion. Works great and fits in a backpack for hiking trips
I have 2. A closed manual washer bucket. A laundry wand. In my opinion I prefer the wand for quick, targeted washing. So I can agitate the water on where I need it. The manual washer is a gentler wash so you have to propel wash like 20 mins. Manual drum: Pro: saves water and electricity. Get some exercise. Con: can only wash small things. Takes up some valuable space for draining and adding water. So the wand doesn't need special equipment. Just a bucket and water is all you need. It's like churning butter. But you can do it in your bathtub or sink or bucket. It collapses into a small area so can hide away easily. For the price, neither cost me more than $60.
12-20 is normal breaths per minute so just pedal based on your breathing 60-100 is normal heartbeat per minute so count based on your pulse It’s like knowing how big your body measurements are so you can measure without a ruler (my forearm=1 foot)

Some laundry mats offer free wash and dry for people who are in need. Look into that. I use to take that advantage when I was homeless for 5 1/2 months.
I’ve always wondered about that little washer. We live in a 27ft RV and we ended up magic chef washer. I use it everyday. I hate going to the laundry mat. I feel like I spend hours there. Thanks for the video!
Actually, drying is a pain in the neck. Either spin-dry or wring-dry. Spin-dry is easier on your prune-textured hands. Then drying clothes inside your vehicle = excess moisture inside vehicle = metal rust. Dry outside on warm days, or use laundrymat.
Agree with everyone that this machine is too tiny to be practical. If I am going to put an appliance into my vehicle, it would be an ESSENTIAL appliance - a compost toilet.
2 5 gallon buckets, inside one drilled holes all around with a plunger with hole in lid for plunger handle to slip thru. Plunge and spin laundry. Remove inside bucket tie rope to overhanging treebranch or some other overhang. then spin/wind bucket generously. Let go of bucket, step back and let it unwind spindrying your laundry. Yippeee 😂😁😊🌹🏁
Okay. Here's some constructive criticism... after the 1st washing, you need to remove the clothes and squeeze or wring out the excess soap water before replacing the clothes and refilling to rinse. Also, rinse the clothes at least twice with fresh water. Leaving detergent in will cause allergic or topical skin issues when worn. When you sweat or get wet, the residual soap will activate or lather up the clothes on you - not to mention the germs are still there hanging on. Your clothes may not smell so pleasant and neither will you if that happens. Great video, but, too costly for me.
I like this channel because its real.. A real van lifer, with a ton of great content, beautiful, smart and enjoyable to watch. Channel growth is real, another undervalued creator that deserves much more.. Keep it up Ahle!
Your new exercise program! I have tried many alternatives to washing clothes. My ultimate when on the road with no power? I'll go back to the bucket & plunger method! 😉
We are a bit less sophisticated, we use a toilet plunger and bucket on our Sailboat. Our bucket can also be used for other purposes, its all about the space savings. Let us know after a couple months use how you like it.
@@thankheavenforseveneleven5522 with my hands, the old fashion way, when I'm away from the washing machine I use my hands and the amount of time it takes to sit and paddle, I'll already be hanging my sh*t out and clean as ever 😂😂😂😂 even a hard brush will work better.
ND Cr yeah try soaping, washing, rinsing, wringing, rinsing again.... it’s a lot. Especially jeans or thick items. Source: no washer for years and too poor for laundry mat/going to other peoples houses.
I use a large jar with a couple pumps of hand soap and water. Fits unders, socks, and 2 tops. Soak it at night, agitate and rinse in the morning. Then hang outside. Looking at this I might try a salad spinner instead of hand wringing. Also, after bathing in pet pool I'll soak my larger items then rinse and hang outside. Some days need a couple of rinses. Could stop at a laundry but I like the zen of it. :)
You can wash jackets, blankets, and sheets. Not thick blankets or jackets. Have something similar in my apartment and it does just fine with all item. Have to make sure the clothes are evenly place in the machine during the "dry cycle" or the washer shakes around.
For that much amount of clothing washed at 1 time, I rather wash them by hand. Much more faster, however at the dry cycle, they won’t get as dry as using this machine. 🤪🤪
Useful video. I have been thinking of buying one of these and your demo and comments helped me decide not to. I have spinal injury and that bouncing and holding and leaning wouldn't work for me. Thx for posting!
My aunt gave me a portable washer 3 years ago and it costed $60 I believe and you can wash a little bit more. But you have to plug it into a outlet and it does all the stuff for you it's more ment for a dorm or rv or small apartment without access to a real washer.
I would recommend getting a ROVSUN 10 LBS portable washing machine with twin tub electric compact washer it's cheaper and similar in size but costs only $75 on Amazon they work great and use little solar
If you need to iron your clothes/ attempt to iron your clothing, use a Hair Straightener, it really helps. I used a hair Straightener on my jrotc blues in high school because I didn't know how to iron and using a hair Straightener is a quick way to iron to. Just put it on the highest temp tho
I once had the same Yirego Drumi that you are using. Over time, the gears stripped, so I starting sitting around it and churning it by hand. The capacity was just too small. Now I manually use a Washing Wand (essentially an air-vented, hard-plastic plunger) and a ten gallon industrial ice bucket, and I use a fast electric spin dryer after the wash and rinse “cycles.” All told, I can clean and hang to dry enough clothes for four days in less than half an hour. That would be too damp to do inside a van, but outside would be fine.
@@GreaserCentral Hmmm, it might be in your city then. Cause in every city I have lived it I hung my clothes to get dry. Except when I was in an 5 floor Apt.
You mention a bucket ., there is a small ish size washer /dryer for motor homes that holds little more .. I have seen used for under $80 but ?need power if u don’t have power then I would stick to the bucket or laundrymat
I can't say much on this because my wife and I decided to buy a washing machine but we life full time in our 28 ft class A RV. So we got to thinking about it and we found a nice little washer made by a company called costs at and it was just what we needed so we took a chance on the washer and so far 6 mtg later it's still going even with the 3 of us living here oh yeah our 14 yr old daughter. And it does work well gets close clean. Well peace out fellow campers.
I have a portable washer I have had for 3 years and I live in an apartment and I use it faithfully lol mainly cause I can't always get to a laundry mat and don't always have the quarters. And cause my kids go to a uniform school so I wash they uniforms almost every other day 🤣🤣🤣
Have you considered a scrubba there a bag and way more compact and pretty much does the same thing. Only thing is you scrub by hand it’s pretty awesome I recommend looking into that as a space saver and to keep to do quick loads in your van. Hope this helps.
Use a bucket I've done my washing for over 30 years this way doing a little in my daily routean is simple saving a small fortune and time in a laundry. It's simple and it works while at the same time washing by hand is exercise. I use a oval shaped bucket for the reason it fits in my back pack easy and is allso used for my shower on the road less travelled.
I inherited one of these with an Airstream I just bought and I’m now living in and I have no manual for it so this is very informative. I’m excited to be able to do my own laundry :) I’m going to have some very muscular legs from doing this lol
i agree with most other commenters better to use a bucket and plunger, except i might keep it and use for spinning water out! easier than twisting by hand!
I have a much cheaper drum style that I hand crank. I thought it would be great off grid. It washes more clothing than the one presented but takes 5 gallons of water per load. I have to compare how much water I have and whats more important in the desert, washing clothes or taking a shower.. I'm debating on whether its worth the storage space or as others mentioned, a "plunger" type which can be used i the tub or a bucket. You can even put water in a bucket or tub and let it soak and move a bit while your traveling. PS ...I use the gray rinse water for toilet flushing or giving my dog a bath... PPS. There is an AMAZING new shower method that involves a pump and water filter that only requires a 1/2 gallon of water and you can shower as long as you want!! so maybe using more water on clothes isn't even an issue any longer!
Way back in the days when I traveled to Mexico in a school bus for the winter, we put our dirty clothes in a bucket of soapy water and strapped it to the back deck for a few miles. Need a tight fitting lid of course on the bucket... Then change the water out and drive a bit further. Easy peasy...
I feel like this is a good back up. Like if you're out hiking and you spill gasoline or something on your clothes. It is alot easier to contain the contaminated water for proper disposal, etc.
I've always wanted to ask. Everyone seems to like Ahle's lifestyle. Why is it then so many homeless including myself get judged and looked down on. I have an SUV and keep myself looking well but when people find out or see me parking in a parking lot, they end up hating me. I don't do anything to cause trouble either.
People don't seem to understand that for many of us van-dwellers and cargo trailer conversions (myself), living this way is a choice. We are not homeless, only "houseless". I prefer this life as I have much more disposable income to spend traveling when I want to and my "house" goes with me. That negates the need for a hotel or motel on my trips! Living a minimalist lifestyle is a decision I will never regret!
Hey I didn't check if anyone else said this already but you can get retractable like clothes lines that you could hang up in the van if you wanted to in the future
Thanks for the demonstration, I had been wondering about those. As a full time vanlifer of five years, I have gotten used to handwash from time to time if I don't have access to a laundrymat. And honestly, I think it takes me less time and definitely less water than this washing machine seems to. But it looks like fun to pedal, so could be really cool to use with kids, and of course for adult kids as well. ;-)
Thank you for making this video. It seems to be a very honest review, and includes downsides of Dumi that I haven't seen anyone else cover. Thank you for sharing this info, it was really helpful. Personally, I'm going to stick to the breathing plunger with a bucket method for my off-grid laundry needs.
I like the portable washer and spin dryer the best one runs with electric and you can connect to sink or bathtub any water fuset and dried it in your spin dryer with the hose in the sink or bathtub that seems to be proberly the best.
Besides capacity, the real deal breaker is the spin-dry results. If extra time won't get the laundry as dry as an electrified model, you're gonna be putting clothes away damp. There are portable electric washers that hold more and really spin dry. But of course they use more water and kWh, and are bigger to boot. (Giantex and Costway are two brands, I believe.)

I´d just stomp that for 10 minutes as fast as I can and then another 10 for rinse... lol Seems legit...
Is it really that much better than just washing clothes by hand in a bucket?
I guess only in the dry procees is way better
@@juanrubio9270 makes sense. Kind of like a salad spinner!
Jason Wu salad spinner works for clothes too !
I prefer my salad tossed.
Yes! I am all in. "Hand" washing is not efficient & leads to rough skin! Thanks for sharing! 👕👗👖👚
I use a $2 plunger with holes drilled into it and a Home Depot bucket then I dry with a spin dryer
We are a bit less sophisticated, we use a toilet plunger and bucket on our Sailboat. Our bucket can also be used for other purposes, its all about the space savings. Let us know after a couple months use how you like it.
That's a waste of money, energy and time....while you're peddling, I'm washing 6 pieces of clothes in 2 minutes lol
Kizzy Harding
Without electricity, how?
@@thankheavenforseveneleven5522 with my hands, the old fashion way, when I'm away from the washing machine I use my hands and the amount of time it takes to sit and paddle, I'll already be hanging my sh*t out and clean as ever 😂😂😂😂 even a hard brush will work better.
It’s great if your off grid.
How? I used to hand wash and it’s not that fast.
I can't get over your eyes, absolutely mesmerizing 😍
You can wash jackets, blankets, and sheets. Not thick blankets or jackets. Have something similar in my apartment and it does just fine with all item. Have to make sure the clothes are evenly place in the machine during the "dry cycle" or the washer shakes around.
For that much amount of clothing washed at 1 time, I rather wash them by hand. Much more faster, however at the dry cycle, they won’t get as dry as using this machine. 🤪🤪
Panda55 C cheaper just use a large salad spinner .
Why dont you just go and get one of those folding washing machines from Amazon, very convenient!!!!💯💙 especially if you doing laundry in a van .
Save the rinse water for the next load
Useful video. I have been thinking of buying one of these and your demo and comments helped me decide not to. I have spinal injury and that bouncing and holding and leaning wouldn't work for me. Thx for posting!
You should check out Nomadic Fanatic& CheapRvLiving . They both have off grid style washers & dryers.
My aunt gave me a portable washer 3 years ago and it costed $60 I believe and you can wash a little bit more. But you have to plug it into a outlet and it does all the stuff for you it's more ment for a dorm or rv or small apartment without access to a real washer.
I like the little plug in ones that spin clothes mostly dry.
Great Demonstration! 🧦👚 Months later... would you say the quality of the 'Drumi' held up❓
I can’t believe someone presented this thing in a board meeting and it actually got approved 😅😅😂😂😅😅😂
I feel bad for her if she bought it. There’s a lot of better options :-(
I would recommend getting a ROVSUN 10 LBS portable washing machine with twin tub electric compact washer it's cheaper and similar in size but costs only $75 on Amazon they work great and use little solar
Nope. Not worth the effort, even if the unit costs nothing.
A plunger in a 5 gal bucket is as efficient and you can do sheets. 🙄
Plunger like for a toilet ? Genius
Genius
If you need to iron your clothes/ attempt to iron your clothing, use a Hair Straightener, it really helps.
I used a hair Straightener on my jrotc blues in high school because I didn't know how to iron and using a hair Straightener is a quick way to iron to. Just put it on the highest temp tho
I have no plans on van life. I watch ahle because her eyes are so mesmerizing😍. No disrespect intended.
Just get a bucket and hand wash, so much quicker.
That's always a good idea! How do you dry it?
@@GreaserCentral Big Bright, and hot everyday SUN.
@@alonzomartii yea but it's hard to do that in the city, I can do that when camping 🤷♂️
Always wondered about those drumis thanks for doing a review. ❤
Try putting a little liquid fabric softener in the rinse cycle, you'll be amazed at how good the clothes smell and feel.
Trust me, kind this stuff, u buy it, try it one time then put it and never used anymore..lol
If don't live a van life
I have a portable washer I have had for 3 years and I live in an apartment and I use it faithfully lol mainly cause I can't always get to a laundry mat and don't always have the quarters.
When he started going faster in my mind it would have just been so funny of that ball thing would have just came flying out! 😆 😆 😆
I saw another nomad use a 5 gallon bucket and a toilet plunger. Worked really well.
If they look and smell clean then this is a result. I'd probably spin them a bit more to take out the excess water. Great leg exercise! 😀
I think I’m gonna downsize and live the hobo life like you Ahle
Love your choice of music between the cycles!!!😁
It's basically a salad spinner for clothes. But off grid water is going to be the real issue.
MER What is this amazing shower system?!?
Way back in the days when I traveled to Mexico in a school bus for the winter, we put our dirty clothes in a bucket of soapy water and strapped it to the back deck for a few miles. Need a tight fitting lid of course on the bucket... Then change the water out and drive a bit further. Easy peasy...
Reminds me of Rumpelstiltskin, "spin for that gold"
😂
So glad you're still doing videos! I haven't watched in awhile and I'm excited to catch up!
Beside washing you can also exercising your legs.. 😆
I like it actually because i really don't like washing clothes with hand.
I don't washing clothing with hand either
@Maria i don't like washing clothes period!
I feel like this is a good back up. Like if you're out hiking and you spill gasoline or something on your clothes. It is alot easier to contain the contaminated water for proper disposal, etc.
We live on our 41 ft sailboat preparing to sail around the world... that is a really cool washing unit you have! We might have to look into that....
Your enthusiasm blew me, you could’ve peddled like you wanted that clean
Hey I didn't check if anyone else said this already but you can get retractable like clothes lines that you could hang up in the van if you wanted to in the future
you did not spin them long enough nor fast enough for the rinse
Thanks for the review.
Seems like you could do one towel. I would try it. Not a huge one but a thin one. Good job! Leslye
They have cheaper machines that hold more and do most the work for you..
Thanks for the demonstration, I had been wondering about those.
As a full time vanlifer of five years, I have gotten used to handwash from time to time if I don't have access to a laundrymat.
And honestly, I think it takes me less time and definitely less water than this washing machine seems to. But it looks like fun to pedal, so could be really cool to use with kids, and of course for adult kids as well. ;-)
Do you have solar power for your camera, phones, laptop ect? Or do u use the vans battery?
Assad Beats I think she still has a Jackery power bank and a solar panel.
She lives in her boyfriend's condo... This is just side income from TH-cam
My mom told me if I don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all🤐. It is a neat contraption tho
I learned the same thing; but from the movie Bambi (kids version not adult haha)
I like the portable washer and spin dryer the best one runs with electric and you can connect to sink or bathtub any water fuset and dried it in your spin dryer with the hose in the sink or bathtub that seems to be proberly the best.
Your clothes will dry faster if you put them outside! 🤷🏽♂️
