Wow! I'm glad I had found you. After close to 20 years in the tech industry I'm pretty much losing my job from the state. Pretty lame to learn they are letting me go - its complicated but I was granted remote work and approved to move out of state. Now that state is changing policy. Heres the thing. I did manual labor for years thinking a corporate job would be more secure. What I have learned along the way, is that none of them are secure and you are bound by someone else by either layoffs or working with difficult coworkers. The corporate world was nothing I could imagine. Now at 50, I'm thinking of changing my career and starting my own cleaning / restoration service. I do have those moments of 'fear.' I deep down know that I need to be 'all in' but it is hard at the moment while I still am employed with them and devoting my day to them. I feel like I'm stuck in the middle with one-foot out and one-foot in. I have full support from my wife. I just need to take the first step and it feels really scary.
Thanks for sharing this, it's what I needed to hear. As a over 50, tired of my career after 30 years in the tech field, taking a break now after having a burn out, enough savings to last perhaps a couple of decades but not enough to properly retire on. And what taking a "mini retirement" of 2 years has shown me is that doing nothing is really nice, but only as a contrast to doing something you don't like. We all need something to work towards that we think is meaningful, and so I need a second career if only for that. Your advice to just do something every day is really spot on. It's where I need to start.
I am a 70 year practising doctor. Since the last year I am starting a fruit farm, and hope to eventually phase out my medical career in 5 years and settle down as a farmer...
Jung Bahadur Thapa that is very cool! We just purchased a 20 acre perma culture farm that we plan to use for self sustaining purposes but also as a demonstration/education farm to help teach the importance of soil and nutritious food
I worked for a police dept for lotta years and hated putting the uniform after 10yrs.. I dreaded dealing with the garbage of society.. I left the job left a pension retirement benefits i was nervous but i just did it started a business never looked back... Being happy healthy beats a life of secure misery
Be willing to change, and have the desire to change. Love it 💯 *Made a career change in late 2021 (age 55). Covid-19 changed the car sales industry (forever), coupled with working way too many hours per week. The change was awkward at first, as I took a Real estate Security position. I also NOW work only at night. At times I felt like I was doing it wrong. I hung in there and committed to it. Of course I took a small pay cut, but the time with my wife was worth it. I now eat dinner with my wife every night. 💜 I also started working a second job, since I had extra time. This second job has been a life-changing thing. It is physically demanding, but it's been physically and spiritually rewarding. Life is good. I look forward to the future with my wife, and my new life/career path.
Wow! This is so inspiring! Good for you! I used to have most of my clients as government workers and most of them spent their time talking to me about how miserable they were and they were just waiting for their pension. It was sad as heck! I'm so happy to hear you did this!!
I've been getting a ton of rejection on the applications I've sent out over the last few months; not even an interview. I don't know what they want, even though I feel I meet the qualifications for said job. So I feel I'll have to do it all on my own in an entrepreneurial way. The virus has messed a lot of things up, so there's that as well.
You can change at any age. Getting younger people to appreciate you in a different capacity is the trick. People around 35 and under think “old” is gross and don’t realize that aging is happening to them too. In fact, I’ve had students tell me they’ll kill themselves rather than live to an old age. I ask them to remember that sentiment as they will feel different when they look older, but don’t feel older.
Haha, yeah, I had younger early 20's co workers telling me they'd kill themselves when they were 35.... until they reached 35... 🤣 If you're going for a late career change past your 45's and 50's you have to make sure that you're going to choose something that you genuinely enjoy doing. What helps, is that when you reach your 40's and 50's, your decisions get less and less based on practicalities and accomodating other people and more based on what makes YOU happy. Keep this in mind and your decisions will be made a lot easier.... 😁👍
I'm 59 yrs old and have never had a career, I've had jobs just not what I would consider a career. Currently, and for a very long time I've been trying to open a business and so as I'm listening to your video, I'm thinking of several reasons why I am not lucky enough to do this, or there's some other reason why it wouldn't work out for me. I thought I was 100% committed but I guess I am afraid to get out of my comfort zone.
Is it the field your in or just that company? This is my weekly topic for my own subscribers. Career. One thing that can really bring a person into depression is 40 hours a week of hating their job. The job is literally almost half of the waking life. The problem many people have is that they have a craving for security. The person will tolerate being unhappy if that is their normality. People would rather have secure bitterness than the fear of stepping off the cliff. The fact is that you can change your career anytime. At 40 or 50. I once knew a car salesman of 30 years who did really well but started to hate his job--so became a nurse at 57. He is now a travel contractor. His friends told him he would be 57 by the time he got licensed as an RN. He told them he would be 57 anyway. So he will now spend the next ten years doing something he likes instead of something he hates. But you have to decide if it is life on the sea you hate or just that ship you're traveling on. In other words--do you hate your trade or just the company you're at? But whatever you aren't happy with you must change and continue to advance yourself. Hope this helps someone---Charles.
Really liked your video and hearing the information you’re sharing, which is very truthful and raw. I’m 51 and I’m already making my career change so there’s no turning back now. I’m really enjoying my new career plus I’m enjoying my part-time business that I’ve been shaping and working hard to succeed in.
I want to change career and move area, but I am a single parent and have to sell my house in 2 years. Been in the same job for 19 years with no promos been part time. I feel so trapped. Its either financial risk or ground hog day.
I am 52 worry for Good will here in klamath falls Oregon been working for Good will for 3 years feeling never sick . Feeling like 3 or 4 co-worker are working against me you know trying at 50 something trying to keep up with A 2O 30 something world

I became a cop at age 50, wish I would have done that when I was younger. I would have had more time to enjoy helping others.

lance miller so true! Way to go trusting yourself and being will to give up the perceived security
From salesman to city bus driver at 51, meaning courses, exams and stress of not getting the job; but i did it and never looked back.

The 20yr olds wont appreciate this video but they will be doing this in a much tougher world...at age 50
