2020-2021 made me reflect on my current career path. And made me question my purpose.
The question that comes to mind is does energy I put into the work I do, positively change the world or help the communities?
The technology industry is amazing, and the pay is more than enough, but I often lose motivation knowing that my work is only making investors richer. And with what's going on around the world and nation, I want to focus my energy on something positive.

I completely agree with everything Linda says. I am still not sure what the next thing is for me, but I my plan is to first take free online classes to narrow down what I like. Then I'll start taking paid online classes to further explore those areas. Once I have narrowed down to where I am sure of the topics that interest me, I can then investigate schools/certifications/continuing ed, etc.

First you have to assess whether you really want a different career. This is my weekly topic for my own subscribers. Career. One thing that can really bring a person into depression is 40 hours a week of hating their job. The job is literally almost half of the waking life. The problem many people have is that they have a craving for security. The person will tolerate being unhappy if that is their normality. People would rather have secure bitterness than the fear of stepping off the cliff. The fact is that you can change your career anytime. At 40 or 50. I once knew a car salesman of 30 years who did really well but started to hate his job--so became a nurse at 57. He is now a travel contractor. His friends told him he would be 57 by the time he got licensed as an RN. He told them he would be 57 anyway. So he will now spend the next ten years doing something he likes instead of something he hates. But you have to decide if it is life on the sea you hate or just that ship you're traveling on. In other words--do you hate your trade or just the company you're at? But whatever you aren't happy with you must change and continue to advance yourself. Hope this helps someone---Charles.

I love that line "He told them he would be 57 anyway"

Thank you for the video. Defo understand who you are, what you want, what's your talent, strengths, skills and interests. Pin those pieces together and target at the organization or roles that you can play your strength at and align with your values. You need 70-80% to get hired and to perform well at a job. No need to be 100% qualified or with the exact experiences.

In my opinion at 30 it’s hard to change careers. When you been doing something for 10 or more years it’s hard to one day say Okay I’m going to go on a different path. Unless you hate the job and there is a big reason why you want to leave it’s not easy at all. I’ve tried to switch career paths twice, and they were both higher paying jobs with union benefits and I turned both of them down because there’s nothing their for me but the money and you never chase the money. You have to stick to what you love doing and the money will come. That’s my advice.

Read the job description of what you want to do, identify the basic and preferred skills on those descriptions, and then close the skills gap while also conducting informational interviews to build connections and learn that trade.

Why do these people sound so darn canned. "Look into the mirror" "it's important for you to highlight your skills" "you are going to find out there are some missing pieces" "what is going to get you up" "you want to have an action plan with goals" BORING! Not my Mother. Make it a little more engaging not lecture. Easier said than done ...have these people experienced this, not thinking so. I am sure she a smart and nice lady - just saying.

What gets you excited about a monday morning?... does a refuse collector get excited about monday mornings? Does the person living with an unstable health condition get excited about monday mornings.... all this is reasonable superficial advice 'on paper' where it assumes 'all being equal'. People.. one of the biggest hurdles to changing career, whatever the driver, is Ageism.
