Clarity is number one. Reflecting on your life at this point is important. I started meditating, cleaning and organizing everything, and eliminating everything I no longer wanted or needed. Going back to the essentials and starting over. Letting fresh ideas come into my mind and playing with new hobbies. We get stuck from being too comfortable and complacent. Turning to a new decade is a new beginning. I just turned 45 today and look forward to creating a new life.

I like what you said & screenshot your comment. I’m in the process of clearing out junk as well as old ways of thinking. I’ve been blessed to do what I love since 2009 - pet sitting. It’s time to add additional side jobs, including writing, to diversify. The writing was on the wall that I needed other sources of income when, two years ago, I tripped on a broken sidewalk. I have just turned 62; though I’m very healthy a fall could put me out of commission for some time. Not sure why I ended up writing all this lol but I’ll leave it in case anyone else needs to read it, like I needed to read yours.

Too many people are living the "corporate zombie" life, having to check in their soul before they go to work. Too many times, we let the different fears in our life overcome us. Fears that are sometimes relevant, fear that are sometimes absurd. The key to being able to pivot is to be always prepared for the direction you want to pivot in. Find ways to gain experience even if it is not paid. Being career mobile is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

    • @BraveThinkingInstitute
      @BraveThinkingInstitute  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well put, Mike! Naming fears can take away so much power that they hold us in simply by acknowledging them. Thanks for watching and great insights :)

Most get settled and just stay there and ride it out. This is my weekly topic for my own subscribers. Career. One thing that can really bring a person into depression is 40 hours a week of hating their job. The job is literally almost half of the waking life. The problem many people have is that they have a craving for security. The person will tolerate being unhappy if that is their normality. People would rather have secure bitterness than the fear of stepping off the cliff. The fact is that you can change your career anytime. At 40 or 50. I once knew a car salesman of 30 years who did really well but started to hate his job--so became a nurse at 57. He is now a travel contractor. His friends told him he would be 57 by the time he got licensed as an RN. He told them he would be 57 anyway. So he will now spend the next ten years doing something he likes instead of something he hates. But you have to decide if it is life on the sea you hate or just that ship you're traveling on. In other words--do you hate your trade or just the company you're at? But whatever you aren't happy with you must change and continue to advance yourself. Hope this helps someone---Charles.

I was always contemplating quitting my job because I felt it lacked work life balance. It was weighing me down. I was sacked last year and instead of feeling sad after being given a termination letter but felt a sight of peace. I am searching for a job but I still feel like I would love s job that involves talking to people more than my career. I am turning 41 in May. I found you as I was thinking of the best thing to do. Thank you for sharing this

My advice if you're scared to make a dramatic change: dip your toe in the water before jumping in. In other words, keep your dreadful job that gives you some security, then take small steps into the direction of what you love on the side. Once you build the confidence and conviction, then take the leap.

I worked in retail my entire 20’s just dreaming of a corporate job. My 30’s, I spent in corporate jobs working my way all the way to a six figure salary. Now I’m almost 40 and feeling lost because what I really enjoy doing doesn’t pay the bills. I’m stuck doing what I’m good at and not what I really want to do.

OK. You have decided what your ultimate goal is. Make sure it is a
definitely defined goal. "Someday I want to be famous" just won't cut it.
Define exactly what you want to do. Define a reasonable time frame. Know
what you have to do to get there. You don't need to know every little
detail, but you do have to have the big picture and many of the details.
If you have a goal in mind but don't know what it takes to reach it, then
you need to find out. Do some reading, talk to people who know, ask
questions and LISTEN to the answers. Think that sounds like a lot of work?
Well, remember what you are preparing for - your success and happiness.
Surely you want to put a little effort into that! Anyway, a little
research into what it will take for you to reach your goals isn't too
    difficult.

The whole idea is ridiculous to me. People are stuck in this mindset that 40 is somehow old. That's just stupid. When you are 40, you have lived ~20 years as an adult. You have another 25 until you are "supposed to retire" (according to the mindset that came from a time when people died at 67). In this day and age, and much more so in 25 years, you can probably be healthy and work till way into your 70s, if not longer (advances in medicine/biotech/genetech/cybernetics/etc.). However you spin it, you have more time ahead of you than is behind you, most likely even if you count from birth. So this whole idea that you are "old" at 40 is just mindbogglingly stupid. Now: If you decide to let your body go to shit and to never make any changes whatsoever after hitting 40 then you're right, you are pretty much done, but that is your decision, not an inevitability.

I’m ready to move on after 18 years in my career. I loathe it now. I don’t want to be associated with it anymore. I feel trapped. I have a totally different degree to start another career but I can’t get hired. Maybe I’m supposed to be a contractor.

Such a differcult thing to do (starting over), especially when money is needed now and time doesn't stand still.....I am 46 and married with 3 beautiful daughters at private schools. I am desperate to do something I love but scared as my commitments can not be met if I go that route. Also, I actually am not 100% sure what my true skills are! I know however that I am someone who wants to help others - grow others - better their lives. How do I start?!

I'm in a similar situation..I'm 48 and was energetic until I ruptured a disc 3 months ago, but although it's almost better,it has made me rethink my future. I have been unhappy in retail anyway ,have done it most of my life but never progressed due to lack of opportunities and confidence holding me back. I'm always living from one paycheck to the next with no disposable income and may I add I work my butt off and now I really want to be something and leave some sort of legacy for my daughter and my first grandchild due in five days time...life getting me down right now and has been for a while....
      P. S .no depression, not on medication, just trying hard to do something about it and need ideas please...I'm great with people, excellent customer service, love helping people..but doctor says no to homecare or working in nursing homes...thanks in advance

Hi Doug. I hope you don't mind me commenting here. You can do almost anything. Instead of thinking of reasons why you can't, have you ever given some thought to the reasons why you can?
The 'can't' reasons will stop you. The 'can' reasons will inspire you.
Sometimes we don't know what we do want, but we definitely know what we don't want.
We can use the 'don't want' list and reverse it to guide our 'do want' list.
For example, you say you want to help others. How? Can you drill down a bit more? ie Do you want to help physically, emotionally, the young, the old etc. You will find your answer if you give yourself some breathing space to think about this quietly.
      Then the 'HOW'?
My advice would be to make a list of the 'can' reasons' and start breaking them down into smaller parts or smaller tasks. It doesn't have to huge dramatic changes, but changes need to happen.
Here is a clip that will hopefully help.
My very best wishes to you.

Hi Patricia. I've certainly done the living from 'paycheck to paycheck' before and I soon got very fed up with that. What helped me, was to start to educate myself. By this I mean, what material could I get my hands on and learn how to get out of this hole I was in.
With regards to finances, I would recommend the book 'The Richest Man in Babylon' by George Clason. If money is tight, there is even the audiobook on TH-cam for free.
Its a game changer when it comes to finances and especially how to adjust accordingly.
Regarding confidence holding you back, you are definitely not alone. Below is a clip of a video that may help you understand how great you truly are (and you are, as we all are). Sometimes we just need a reminder.
Have a look at my reply to Doug (above) as a lot of my suggestions will also apply to yourself.
      My very best wishes.
      James

I think Tony didn't realise he was already blessed. Only a fraction of people ever get to earn $150k, that's more than the British prime minister earns, thats the top 1% of earners in the world (excluding all the people online who pretend they earn that much), Tony was already legitimately one of the wealthiest human beings to ever live. I think mos people on the planet would trade dissatisfaction and time to be that wealthy. IDK why people bring these silly examples up, it's unrelatable, barely anyone earns that much.

I appreciate the video, but Tony made more of a lateral movement or "job" change instead of a true career change. I'd like to hear stories of those who worked in the business world, then made a dramatic shift to become a nurse, physical therapist, etc. That's a true leap in another direction.

I really truly, with all my heart despise my job and the miserable company I work for. I desperately need out of this living hell that I am in. But, alas, no clue how to get out of it. Been praying about this for over 10 years, nothing.

    • @BraveThinkingInstitute
      @BraveThinkingInstitute  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Bob, one of the simplest - but not easiest - questions to think through is, "What would I love?" If you're miserable, what would you love to be doing instead? Just remember, specificity is key in this exercise, and if you do that, can ultimately reveal actions that you can take to start moving in that direction. We have seen so many people, just like you, Bob, step into lives they love when they answer that question earnestly!

Its now 2 years later and BOY have things changed. I have to testify .. God did answer my prayers .. BIG TIME. He gave me a mission and reason to live, fight, have faith, etc. I am still in my same job, but He came through for me. My faith and relationship with Him have never been stronger. And I also understand now how my life "is hidden with God in Christ Jesus". He is amazing and I am so greatful to God for what He has been doing this last year. NEVER count Him out!
