I'd like to know how to get around the "no experience no job; no job no experience" issue that career changers get. Your idea to post transferable skills is a good one, but it doesn't work when employers don't care about transferable skills.
how do u do any of these steps when you don't know what career you want to change to ? suppose you just think you might not want to carry on doing what u are doing.
I'm 32 and been working full time night shift for 16 years. Half my life. Finally taking steps to take my life back. After having a few serious health scares, it's an eye opener how little a company values human life.
☹️ I'm planning to change my career. Great benefits and pay but treat you like dirt, a number and disposable. If you die means that a job opening is ready to fill. 😭 Management won't care about you, your health or your family. They pay part of the Life insurance premium so your family won't make a complain or fuss about their loss. WTF a worker died and it was discovered around lunch time. Yet his donkin donuts bag was on his desk.
How did your changes turn out since you’ve made this comment 3 years ago. I’m looking to make a career change but the steps to get there might include a pay cut of about 60%
1. You must want it bad. Make list 2. What are you willing to sacrifice for it? 3. You have to discover what capabilities/qualities are necessary for your particular dream. 4. Connect to people already doing your dream job/career. Get insights for changes you should be making. 5. Building a Franken-mentor. Also can be virtual, following experts and their advice. 6. Struggle and Plan for it. Envision struggle more than outcome(success), it will make your actions more realistic and calculated. 7. Market yourself. Execute your plan.
Fantastic tips. Getting out there to meet people is one of the best investments for your time. Many people have the misconception that meeting people would give them opportunities. It doesn't happen that way. You have to build trust, just like no one (most people) would marry you when you meet them the first time. One of the best lessons I got from meeting people is learning what others do. Sometimes, you realise what others do are exactly what you could be doing and you have the exact skills for it, but just never thought about it. This is where it broadens your mind as well!
Turn 32 in few months decided I want a career change, Desire to wake up and work at a company i hate, doing job that I do not like, not making good money, the worst years of my life have been spent here…Going to focus and work on these rules. Its up to me to make this happen
I have literally applied all of your methods from a variety of videos. I even purchased 3 of your books. I think you have great content, but it has been a year and zero luck. I am ready to just bawl my eyes out, as I have one month left of survival. I used to be an accountant and was horrible at it. I would literally fall back into a depression if I had to go back into it. Again, great content. I know you said hang in there before on prior comments, but I am just feeling stuck now.
thanks for the tips, I'm upskilling and getting a I.T networking certification to enter the industry while I'm still young (34 y.o). been researching for career changing and this is really good, thanks
This is helpful! I worked at a warehouse for 4 years and I hated every second of it lol. I never want to feel like that again. I want to make comics and I’m working on a portfolio. It’s hard work but I hope it pays off.
Andy, wow, I am in the middle of a career change and this is awesome. I was just fired from my 1st job after a career change and am looking for my next job. Your videos have been a huge resource for me. Thank you so much. You are an excellent communicator as well.
I just need to pause for a moment and let your rich advice sink in to me.. thank you for this vid. How i wish i watched this 5yrs ago. Great content! Greetings from Manila PH
I find myself in a bit of a predicament and could use some guidance. Over the past three years, I've been quite stuck in my comfort zone. I come from a marketing and social media background, but unfortunately, I have only gained limited experience due to the challenging job market in my country. It's quite the norm here that positions require experience, with few exceptions for internships. I'm currently 33 and feeling a bit lost and confused about my career path. I believe that seeking advice from an expert like you could shed some light on my situation and help me navigate through this uncertain phase. Thank you
I've been watching your videos for the past few hours, thank you. I appreciate your clarity and deep knowledge about career success and advisement. I am at a major crossroad in my career given a new degree and I almost feel stuck. You are a great advisor! I hope to consult with you soon.
Oh wow! This is great not only for its practical content, but also because the career I am planning to change to is precisely training. I would like to move from my 14 years in Talent Acquisition to training as a consultant.
Thank you!!!! I followed your tips, invested 5000 euros to upskill with the latest digital marketing skills and got offered my dream job today after going through 6 different interview rounds!! :)
Well, I found your video somewhat late in my new career journey, I had already done some of what you are talking about by trial and error 😅.... I have to go and see what step I am on and see how I can fix myself going from the corporate world to the health care division. It isn't easy
Andy, while searching a new job, i opened a small company and start producing granola, sauces and pastry. This is not what i have been doing this past years, so my question is: is it ok to put that in my LinkedIn profile? Because i will continue searching for a job. Greatings from mexico
I am so glad I came across this video! I was seriously starting to feel I made a bad decision by making a career change. I still can't help but feel lost. I had been a hairstylist for 10 years and started to get jaded and really wanted to go back to school and gain more skills as a professional Admin. Assistant. I am almost finished receiving my assosciates and I have been applying to jobs with no luck. I feel like employers only see HAIRSTYLIST and nothing else. Please help. Ive made sacrifices by working part time in retail which does not help my resume .. I don't know😣
In the business/corporate world, I have found it to be extremely difficult to make even a slight career change. I am in the tax accounting field and there have been times where I wanted to transition into a general accounting role. It never worked out. Tax is considered to be a specialty and pays higher, so employers would raise their eyebrows as to why I wanted to move into something more generalized and pays less. Imagine that. I have a master's degree in accounting but can't get an accounting job unless it's tax related. However, I have seen people make career changes internally with their current employer. But seeking career change as an outsider to a company gives the employer hesitation, from my experience.
May i ask what if one do if someone have a master degree but still unemployed for that particular working sector, but he cannot turn back to the starting point because he has already overqualified and job skills mismatch for another field's starting position. What should he do please?
You say that we should be sure it's a "burning desire" not a "passing fancy". I get the sense in this, but here's my problem: I've never had any burning desires career-wise. I wanted to be a scriptwriter of filmmaker, I was in the right course at Unit to do this, yet I ended up working in a library, and then becoming a teacher. This is because even my main interest did not make me feel so passionate to do anything it takes to work in that industry. I still want to be involved in the film/media industry, but I simply don't know where to start, and knowing that I have never had the passion to seek out that career even when young puts me off trying now, despite the fact I know that is what I've always been interested in.
Thank you for all of your wonderful knowledge and mentoring you display in your videos!!! I am 42 years of age with an education level of high school graduate! Ultimate goal: going back to school very soon (spring)! I am a mother of four children. Two have full-time careers (one is in her third year of teaching 2nd graders and my son is serving our country in the US Army). I still have two elementary students at home! I didn't intend to go into such depth, however you motivated me! Any advice on finding a job and going to school!??? Past employment Department Manager and Quality Control Supervisor at a call center!
I honestly believe the majority of people won't get to feel happy and fulfilled from work, that the answer is saving and investing in a minimalist lifestyle, and that the correct play is to buy property and rent it out or open a small business. I am very unhappy and have held a dozen different jobs always believing "this will be the one". After getting my ideal job and discovering it wasn't what it was represented as I truly believe to be fulfilled most, not all but most people will need to get those experiences outside a traditional job.
I am trying to change from sales of capital equipment of industrial machinery (including software and automation) to SaaS sales. It's difficult though and MBA is not helping. Could it be because I am not emphasising relevant aspects in my CV or do I need to build additional experience e.g. consult pro bono to SaaS companies to build the learning curve, etc.? I am getting AWS Cloud practitioner certification to start. thanks !!!
I'm most interested in how to handle the "Career Profile" section for changing careers. For example, if I were "Jane Doe" and I wanted to be something other than a "Senior Project Manager" how would I go about writing my "Career Profile"?
I'm in a different situation I was a painter but got hurt doctor is saying that I have to get an office job and not do real work,it hit me when last week I could not drink a beer after work with my right arm, I have spoken to office people and not one can tell me what it is they do all day,and some times it is hard to think straight when in pain so concentration isnt ezy at the moment, I also have difficulty learning how to use computers im a hands on bloke,at the moment having to change industries seems impossible now a days 20 years ago it was ezy but now im finding it impossible
career quiz, ask other people what they think your dream job should be, personality tests, match your values to industries (for example I love books and learning to am looking at becoming a Librarian)
Hey Ma Ma. you can make changes without sacrificing if you're will to make the change very slowly. Most people are making drastic changes and need to "catch up" so to speak, so there's extra work and extra time they need to create in order to do that. Also, many have full-time jobs and need to get a head start on their career change during their nights and weekends. That, in and of itself, is sacrificing your free time. That's what I mean by sacrificing!
Been in the corporate world for 30 years now and it feels so empty meaningless and I worry I will get laid off all time. I think I know what I want to do next it’s just a lot of school training and sacrificing material security and income. But the upside could be immense if I find meaning and fulfillment
I don't think we should "sacrifice" anything. If it is sacrifice, it feels like we can only have 1 thing but not the other. I would rather think about prioritize. Think what is important and what is not and make a list of non-negotiables of work BEFORE you look for a job.
This sounds good. But the reality is you won't even get to the interview!!! On LinkedIn you see applications.. it's hundreds and at least 75% do have the years experience etc.. you don't even get a chance. I was laid off with thousands from mortgage sector and they are experiencing the same thing..
if you're at a college, school or university you can often seek free career coaching from the counsellors there! If you aren't a student it might be helpful to play a game where you 'invent' your dream job, and then look for jobs that have all (or at least some) of those things you listed. I think Andrew expands on this at the start of the video when he says to make a list of what you expect/desire out of a career/job
Yes but, talking to the people who already do the career you want is not always possible, especially if your chosen career is specialist and 'closed off ' to outsiders.
John, I get that. So, overcome that challenge another way. In fact, I'm now in a career where I couldn't talk to anyone who did the job before. The trainers I leverages as coaches also hadn't done this job for my audience. Use what you can. Find what you can. The most important aspect is to be resourceful!!!!!
I'm interested in your post, but I'm at a disadvantage since you didn't put the exact career you are interested in researching, so I will give some broad avenues to explore. When people are in your situation I tell them to imagine you wanted to hire a person in that career. How would you find them?... search LinkedIn, search Indeed for resumes of people in those careers, contact headhunters, call business coaches and ask if they have clients that do that career. Ask Andrew who he knows that could point you in the right direction - he has 36K subscribers. Persistent people find clues and clues lead to answers. Good Luck.

Im in project management bjt its near impossible to land a role in the field now. So im trying to switch careers.

You have to apply then go in person the next day. I've gotten many jobs I was NOT the first choice for by doing this.

Love the video! It was entertaining, your voice sounds like a less hyped-up version of Chris Farley 😄
Anthony, that's THE FIRST time I've ever heard that analogy! LOL
What if you have no idea what you want to do?
career quiz, ask other people what they think your dream job should be, personality tests, match your values to industries (for example I love books and learning to am looking at becoming a Librarian)
Loved this video, congrats
Glad you liked it Fabio!
I have a question >> you have mentioned sacrifices .. why should we made sacrifices , can i just change career without sacrificing

Glad you think so!
Anyone who's just kept changing their jobs fields way too many times and don't know what to say in ur next job interview abt y you kept shifting?
Check out my job Hopper video!!
Great advice!
Thanks so much Laura. Glad you liked it!
Do you have anything about about letters of interest?
Thank you that is

Been in the corporate world for 30 years now and it feels so empty meaningless and I worry I will get laid off all time. I think I know what I want to do next it’s just a lot of school training and sacrificing material security and income. But the upside could be immense if I find meaning and fulfillment
Thank you from 2020
Are you Zach Galifinakis's voice double in movies?!!
very nice video
Thank you and you’re welcome!
Great video Andrew. Very informative. Thank you
You're welcome!!!
I don't think we should "sacrifice" anything. If it is sacrifice, it feels like we can only have 1 thing but not the other. I would rather think about prioritize. Think what is important and what is not and make a list of non-negotiables of work BEFORE you look for a job.
Fair enough Claire. Call it whatever you want but as long as you get focused on what matters most to you, I’m here to support you!!
What books are on that shelf behind you?
Interview intervention. Out of reach but in sight. The hiring prophecies. I wrote them all. 😀
Oooops. I thought I was commenting about another video. lol. There are too many to run through!!!
Can’t sacrifice money. Have a family to support. I can’t drop money to re train. This is where I am struggling
Thank you.
You're welcome!!!
Nice content!
Thanks so much. Always appreciate you watching and thanks too for the kind words!
Ok
This sounds good. But the reality is you won't even get to the interview!!! On LinkedIn you see applications.. it's hundreds and at least 75% do have the years experience etc.. you don't even get a chance. I was laid off with thousands from mortgage sector and they are experiencing the same thing..
Fear paralyzus a great many.laziness and lack of curiosity and hunger for knowledge, the rest.
Don't be a chef, that's what I'm running from
I’d like to switch career but I don’t know what I want to do.
Zac I used the book What Color Is Your Parachute? It was long and took effort.... but it made me get on the right path.

most folks do not have ability, maybe 60% otherwise... I want to be a dentist... with no $ for classes and $11k student debt
I want to quit my job and not work for anyone that’s my goals
Lol me too!!
oh also, chefs have a degree.... Subway maybe
I guess 12 people will not be changing careers successfully :)
