- In this episode we're replacing the core / centre housing rotating assembly (CHRA) on a stock BA XR6 Turbo Garrett turbocharger. We're doing this with a PULSAR drop-in core, teaming it with a PULSAR upgraded rear housing with a larger wastegate flapper, plus a Turbosmart IWG75 actuator. The fixings are getting a refresh, with new titanium studs and nuts used throughout, along with new engine mounts. Subscribe! youtube.com/@MotoringBoxTV?su...

There were a lot of parts used in this one - check the video description for product links!
On low to mid boost the car is still driving the same, but that's mostly thanks to my Haltech running closed loop O2 control and adjusting the fuel to suit. In the next video I'll do some more testing with it, mostly to make sure the wastegate is holding 12psi (or thereabouts) and then setting up a MAC valve so the boost can be controlled properly.
👍👍
Nothing beats spending a Saturday morning getting motoring boxed
Really impressed how far you have come - from beginner to reconstructing turbos! You should be super proud!
I love your show. I find it very enlightening. The best part for me is that you present things in such a way that I understand it and feel I can replicate what you have done. I am inspired to tackle jobs that in my mind seem out of my comfort zone. Because you are someone who has a natural mechanical aptitude and yet no formal qualification as a mechanic, you inspire me to have a go as I figure if you can do it then so can I. Thanks very much for the knowledge you have given me. You are one of the best mechanical based channels on TH-cam.
When I saw you putting the circlip on , all I could think of was the turbo that Turbo Yoda blew up by not seating the circlip properly!! Bloody lucky you spotted it - well done.
If he made the same mistake that makes me feel a lot better!
It is the little things you pick up after doing it the first time you don’t forget.
@@MotoringBoxTV The exciting music was different...... Just a tad harder to hear you clearly above the music level. I don't know why?
Given how much carnage that turbo caused when it let go on the Cummins Patrol, that's probably about 5 bullets that you dodged there Sean. Putting the explanation up too was great.
Great video. While the turbo was out, you should have used locking tabs when bolting the rear housing to the turbo. Those suckers are notorious for coming loose. Over time, the heat of the turbo will anneal the bolts, then its impossible to keep them tight. It started happening to my fgx turbo sedan at around 70k. Pain in the ass actually
Great work Sean. Hey, with the big o-ring, when you roll it down over the edges it twists it so it keeps wanting to untwist and pop back up and off. Need to avoid the twisting and kinda pull it out and down over the edges rather than rolling it.
Yes, seal pick or a scriber will help.
Love the Gran Turismo 1 music! Brings back good memories.
omg the budget did stretch for a Pulsar! now just for the T51 R mod for a future mod, just remember if your missus objects just tell her i gave you permission! ;-)
I love your series on the Magna Ralliart. I consider myself to be competent at performing mechanical work. Since discovering your channel, I realized I was avoiding jobs due to my lack of confidence. You inspire me to take on much more than I would have in the past. I get the impression that the Ralliart isnt your Favorite vehicle. I can relate to this as I also own one. I credit you with bringing back into the spotlight a car that has been overlooked and mostly forgotten. Thanks for doing an excellent job. Love the show.
Good to see BNG Motorsport get a mention, good bunch of guys.
Haven't watched it yet but already liked and know it's going to be a great video.
Always love to see MotoringBox in my TH-cam feed. Much love.
The background music had me break dancing!! just couldn't help it.
So glad you got on to the circlip mishap. I watched you do it and was horrified. Circlips have to locate into a groove, that's how they work. I'll bet you won't do that again 😄. The learning experience is so rewarding I think. ✨
this is awesome to see! great job sir!!!
Good work buddy. I hope you get more power.
The Gran Turismo music in the background is a nice touch lmao. Great vid as always
Good job mate, I can well remember in the late 1980s, especially with the advent of the VL Commodore Turbo. Everybody seemed to have a “turbo timer” and it was a must have option. You never see them any more…..
Because modern turbos are so much better engineered. Most people just make sure the last minute or two of driving haven’t been all boost.
Except on my fg. Hahaha
Great to see your work and the fact you deal with the speed-bumps along the way. Hope you have the success you deserve
I did this 2y ago and the pulsar turbo core is so good and still going strong
Nice e job and great vid, with the Oring if you use a seal pick and run it around under the oring it will take the twist out of the o ring and stop it wanting to roll off.
New mounts are a great idea, makes all the difference to how smooth and quiet your car will sound and feel. Also, trans mount is a great idea to swap out too.
Great Video Sean ! Ive never seen the inner workings of a turbo until now.Really interesting!
Good video Sean , you'd be pleased to get that fixed , love the lounge musac too
It's great that you kept it all so tidy, much respect. When I done this upgrade to my wrx I noticed significantly more legs at the top end.
Good video Sean , love the lounge / elevator musac too
Great video and really enjoy the 🎵🎼🎼 adds a lot to the production value 👍
thanks Sean this is a great video ,well done ,appreciate your work
Great video as always and handy info as looking at similar for my FG. Trip down memory lane with the GT1 menu score.
Awesome video Sean. You're pretty good mechanic with no experience! Keep the vids coming as I'm looking forward watching the next!
well done Sean
It's been a while for the video Sean. I'm not familiar with turbos & this was simple & easy to watch.
My problem on my Holden VY LS1 Ute is that the o2 sensor wiring is playing up somewhere. I fixed the offending broken wire but there must be one broken on the harness. The joys of owning a 20 year old V8 ute!
Our 2013 i30 Premium CRDi has a large Garrett for a 1.6 liter 4 cylinder. I have no idea why it's so big and I've never heard it whistle but man does it haul from 2,000rpm in 6th gear up a steep hill. Hairdryers are certainly a fun addition to engines.
those diesel i30s pull like a train
Loving the gran turismo background music
I bet you've got a saw back!, that was a great video mate, thanks for all those life hacks and tips. Onya 👍.
Good stuff thank you 👍
I got the black mamba stud kit. I had no issues with clearance with the manifold and turbo it comes in and out so easy
They must be a bit shorter!
@MotoringBoxTV You should put high temp anti seize on all exhaust fasteners. I hope you didn't put them in dry? That might come back to bite you after some heat cycles.
Steve, Can you please reply to Shaun if they are shorter or not ?? Or did you just pass the studs straight through the hole, once the manifold is in position and turn them in with the allenkey ?
Never had a turbo , large n/a is enough for me. Its all wizardry to me.
Definitely added complication, but the way the turbo works is actually pretty simple once you get your head around it.
Great job, miss your face Mate. 👍
I have a stage two core put in my factory housing and it’s awesome.
Can’t wait to get it tuned on the dyno to have everything working spot on.
The big test will be at Powercruise on September 7th to the 10th.
Are you taking your car there this time I take my car to real dyno to have everything done and I have never had an issue with my car since taking it to that company
Another amazing video. Do you have to retune the car again because turbo rebuilds or should be fine ?
Nice use of GT1 soundtrack
Also, is that the Daytona USA theme at the beginning? Took me longer to pick it for the lack of lyrics.
Great video Sean. Was there the chance of upgrading the front compressor wheel and housing to the 0.7AR? Good for a heap more volume of air at the same boost pressure. Maybe next time.....
Great Stuff! What does this upgrade set you back?
Install some fire sleeve lining over those oil lines to the turbo
Try some vaseline on that 'O' ring seal should help you for next time
Daytooooona
Hi mate. Did u do the port and flaper mod 🤔
I’m certainly no expert, but the circlip didn’t look right. Great job though, that’s quite the challenge. Great video.
It's addressed later in the video
Is that command and conquer music I hear?
DAAAAYTOOOONAAAAA!!
I forget which Gran Turismo game that background music is from, I think GT2? One of the American car makers?
Oh no, I have absolutely no idea where the engine mount music is from!
Ridge Racer V!
Was the pulsar exhaust side housing the same size as the factory? Looks like the pulsar is 1.06 housing.
It's a 1.06 yes - there's a link to the product in the video description if you need to know more 👍
@MotoringBoxTV how does it compare to the stock turbo boost wise? Does it come on earlier/later?
Looking to get the same housing.
Boost should come on about the same as before, but the wastegate will be more efficient at controlling boost. I have an aftermarket ECU so I can't say 100%.
How did you get the turbine housing off?
They can be stubborn. I've heard of using a mallet, but I decided another way which was a bolt that was the perfect length to wedge down into the space between the front and rear housing. Took it back out and threaded a nut onto it, wedged it in there and then used 2 spanners to hold the bolt/start undoing the nut. Worked a treat! Hope that makes sense.
Why is your turbo vacuum line from waste gate actuator going to your turbo front housing. There should be 2 vacuum hoses. Both going via your sensor mounted next to your battery.
It's running off the wastegate alone at the moment because it was tuned that way. The next thing will be running it through a MAC valve and configuring proper boost control via the Haltech.
@@MotoringBoxTVare you running 12psi boost straight off gate, i think stock was 5-7psi on the ba wssnt it? My fgx is running 19psi of springs in external gate that is plumbed onto turbine housing. But i get 16psi of boost with gt3582r .7 comp housing and it gets full boost at 2500-2600rpm. Im also bypassing stock boost solenoid and running a tube off comp outlet to wastegate. My tuner couldnt get boost control to behave running through ecu, boost was surging really bad.
so would this work with a garret 3582 supercore gen 2
Better confirm with Pulsar, I'm not familiar enough to know if the front and rear housings on yours are any different.
@@MotoringBoxTV okay thanks 🙏🏻
Day Tone Ahhhhh...
i think you have too much wastegate preload
It'll be fine. A guy in the know suggested I can have a hole width's worth of preload and it'll work well.
The vibe with these new style of videos I find is so 'de-identified', for lack of a better word. It feels as if Sean has almost 'gone away' for a while, such that the work itself takes a more focal point in the production, rather than his personality. Intuitively, it seems his intention is to return at some point in the near future, 'reinvigorated' for further, perhaps more advanced automotive exploration. Do not get me wrong, I absolutely adore the new, slick editing style, which lends a much more professional air to the videos. I must also say to Sean if he is reading this - I do not mean to suggest that this is an inappropriate process, because, as you have noted, more important and personal responsibilities have captured your attention, i.e., 'personality' in recent times - I merely am intuiting a future 'explosion' of even greater success with this channel you have so lovingly created. Or maybe this is all just psychoanalytic crap. Keep it up Sean, great work.
As a creator you often can't win. If I spend more time in front of the camera there'll be 10 people saying to shut up and stop wasting their time, or saying how much they hate my voice. So you've gotta experiment with other ideas or styles from time to time. Some of the songs I used in this one were from video games that formed part of my childhood, and again some people don't appreciate that either. The easiest thing to do is just not film anything in the first place. 🤦
@@MotoringBoxTV Yeah man the songs are great - I don't personally have that nostalgia, but as I mentioned, the production style is sleeker these days. However, in a sense I do miss the previous, more vocal content that you mentioned being present in the previous productions, and perhaps that was one aspect I was indirectly pointing to. Anyway, once again, I love the videos, and the trend seems upward, so keep it up.
how do you know its working properly, if you havent done the safety test..... mate, your a danger to society... i want to see you take that care out, smoke the rears OFF the car, and ensure that under max load that turbo is safe, free of oil leaks and not going to cause a fire.
i do safety tests all the time in my ute... like filling out a log book every month, i turn the traction controll off, light em up on some loose gravel, flick it round 3 or 4 times. then turn the traction controll back on... have another go, and boom i know if its working, SAFETY FIRST MATE.
I stopped watching two minutes in, loose the background racket.
Ooohh.. can't wait for the armchair expert comments on this one. 🥸
"I think.." "If I was you.." "The audio.." You need to.." 🤣
