God’s menu MV has literal pots and pans in it. Plus a construction site. The whole song/mv is a total clap back to complaints that they made “noise” music, or “construction” music. They totally embraced their sound, sent a big FU to the haters and went viral for Felix’s low voice compared to his face surprising the hell out of reactors worldwide. It was a breakthrough track in their history.

Tortoise and the Hare is kindof famous in the Korean rap world. If you ever watch a lyrics video, you'll see they have played with ALL KINDS of stuff in the song. Tempos, word play, opposites (rapping fast when the lyrics actually say to go slow, and vice versa), the singsong use of an old Korean children's fairy tale, and other things.
When it first came out, a lot of people didn't like it because it sounds SO very different than other SKZ music, and it freaked them out. But the more they listened and understood the cleverness of the writing and rapping, it developed a cult following.
I absolutely LOVE Tortoise and the Hare. Han wrote it super fast - I think I read something like.....in 30 minutes or less? Just brilliant.

Wrote a really long comment for it to not save so now I have to watch this video again to try to remember it all😅 Here we go, attempt 2.
The “less” you’re hearing is more of a sign of them still being quite young here, less experienced and confident compared to now. I think you’ll hear it more as you go further back. The older songs are still good, but theyre running off of a much more raw skz, running hard to find their direction and fueling their music on passion and teen spirit. Go live and In Life were a turning point in the career because they made the decisive turn to do what they want and have fun with their music rather than collapsing under the pressure to conform. So you were right on when you said it was fun. There’s everything up to Go Live and In Life, those two albums, and everything after when I think about their sound.
These albums were released in the stretch of time after covid cancelled their tour. Instead of chilling, they grinded and grinded in the studio, taking advantage of all the time they had from performances being cut. I strongly believe thats why theres such an exponential growth happening here. They care a lot about improving instead of staying stagnant like many others do after reaching success, and its very satisfying as fans to watch them develop. Some groups start off the cuff with tons of highly experienced producers making their albums, which is fine, but it usually kills the ability to hear their growth as they age. SKZ trusted the process and trusted their passion, and its paid off beautifully. We have pride in their growth, they have pride in their growth. It also terrifies them, because they dont want to get in a place where theyre stuck and unable to get any better.
Otherwise, theyre mostly always touring or being very busy. During their last touring cycle they released oddinary right before they started, circus, maxident, the sound, & skz replay as they were touring, and then released 5 star soon after (and did a mini tour for that too!). Theres basically no time to sit on anything to grow, they have to learn only on experience. With that, they literally still release songs they made during covid 4 years later because they had made so many. According to them, at some point in that down time, they were all the way up to 10-15+ demos a week. The skill increase wasnt an accident.
Gods menu was a huge deal in its time. It still holds up, but there was nothing like it. Its really hard to explain how crazy a time it was for them. They were coming off some real lows losing a member out of nowhere basically, getting their tour cancelled, and losing momentum. This was a strike of genius and hope for them, and blew them into the stratosphere. Comparing where they were at before and after the release is insane if you were there. Both of Felix’s main parts in the song- but usually the 5 star michelin drop, went quite viral and is usually well loved by new fans. Especially in tandem with the music video. Its always, “wow his voice does not match his face.” It is so rare in kpop to have a voice like Felix. Music in general tends to reward male voices that can get really high, so theyre pushed to train their voices as high as they can get. Utilizing the bottom range of his voice and making it a staple in their music was so so smart. They love to pull on the “what can we do and find to be different” card. Utilizing their full vocal range from both ends of the spectrum was a great move.
And their Concerts are an experience, thats for sure. The stamina, the visuals, the dancing, changes to the live versions of their songs. Everything. Actually, they grew so much through the release of go live and in life after their first tour got cancelled, that their first concert dates back were extremely moving. It was a concert over 4 hours with a crazy setlist (many songs you know and love now) and ending with an incredibly emotional heart to heart with their fans as they were so overwhelmed seeing how big they had gotten in person for the first time. I have never seen anything like it, never witnessed a group of men be so forthcoming and openly emotional with their fans. Everyone was so touched and left raw after it. Truly an incredible moment in time to witness, even if seeing all that emotion could be uncomfortable for some. It was such a human experience in contrast with their super stardom. If you ever get the chance, on your own time or on camera (though it would have to be uploaded somewhere with less copyright and linked to youtube) the concert was streamed live like a televised award show performance event would be and reuploaded by octo stay on okru. Its maniac in seoul in may of 2022. Everytime I see that concert, I’m reminded how incredible they are as musicians and as a group of people. Their display of love and friendship towards one another as most of them got really emotionally was something else. I’ll never forget it.
    -
Is “ex” a glow (light)stick song? No! Its a highly debated song among the group members due to allusions to cheating lol. They love to playfully argue about which characters in which songs (between ex, chill, and I like it) are worse. Hyunjin, the one who sings the possible cheating line, loses years every time he has to perform it. More likely for the members to throw hands than make it a light stick song😭
At the time, they talked about Back door being one of the quickest of their lead singles to start and finish from top to bottom demo wise. Coming in at 6 hours. They’ve finished their non singles faster, but for a major track this went smooth apparently.
Wow was a funny milestone, it was the first somg in their discography that 3racha wasnt part of. Why? Danceracha took the reins. Since then, there have been several songs with other members than 3racha responsible for, but it was the talk of the town at the time.
On their keen eye for detail, another day’s runtime is actually 2:47, or 24/7. It describes the monotonous day in day out experience struggling with depression.
Ta has been included in their setlist near the end of their concerts, but it wasnt on their setlist long. Had covid not ended their prior tour, I’m sure it would have been played more. They just have too many songs to choose from. They more often end with Haven and Star Lost. The dance practice/performance video for TA is very very fun, they were having a blast. If you ever wanted to get around to something a little different, its a great way to see their dance personalities.
And yeah, nothing quite like a Stray Kids outro. They actually talk about how important it is for them to consider the performance while theyre making their songs, which is a reason the songs explode at the end. The music break downs with little to no words, those are dance breaks.
As you give their songs a second or third listen, listen for their “p” and “b” and “d” sound emphasis as they rap, they go in when it fits. Playing with the “e” sound is usually a given, but the empasis on popping those consonants is wonderful on the ears.
Unnecessarily long comment, but it was a great album reaction with too many good points from you. So thanks

that Seoul concert in 2022 did something to me. I was a 6-month old stay at that time, watching them from a couch. one would think the atmosphere would be not as good as being in the crowd, but Chan's final speech (to which I can relate) and the way Felix kept crying for an hour...
for almost a week listening to Stray Kids songs immediately was pushing me in that state from the end of the concert.

@@tonystocco Okay, I had to circle back after finishing. I stay hoping that SKZ, and 3Racha in particular, have seen your reviews because the love you have for the music and the details you pick out for us make these album listens ridiculously enjoyable, thank you so much! I also hope you get to talk to them yourself at some point in time so you can get all of your (and our!) production questions answered, but in the meantime, you might find some details already laid out for you in their album Intros.
Re the album itself, thank you for pointing out the 80s/90s nostalgia vibe to it! It hadn't clicked before, but it definitely makes sense 😂 but now I want to hear them cover Extreme, and I don't know if that'll ever happen in this world or the next. Or hear Seungmin cover Open Arms, which would be really interesting - I think Han right now has more of a belter voice (say for Separate Ways), but they're both evolving their singing so much, who knows what the next few years will bring. And Chris did do Smells Like Teen Spirit for one of their Seattle shows, though, so you never know what they'll pull out for concerts.
The rawness/stripped down quality of this album compared to the others you've reviewed thus far I think has to do with that and with the fact that it's definitely an older album from when they really first cemented their musical identity. I think, though, that even though the sound is more lighthearted, that the content of the songs is as heavy or heavier in these earlier songs, but you only really get that part when you check the lyrics.
Yes, both Ta and Haven have been used as either show closers or encores, but the latter is more common since its sentimental for Stays. Miroh is another common closer, but I don't think you've gotten to that one yet.
Okay, enough of a missive. Thank you again for sharing these reactions (and the Ollie cameos) with us! Looking forward to the next exploration!

Okay, here’s some info for any coming reactions:
Album SKZ2020: Chan (the leader/producer/composer) had to reformulate 24 SONGS on this album to fit 8 people because the 9th member left. For people who say there were no sour feelings… Chan was sour, he overworked his ass.
Go Live: is basically the same album from IN LIFE except for 4 songs TOP, SLUMP, Mixtape: Gone Days, Mixtape: On Track
SKZREPLAY: lots and lots of solo, few duo/group songs.
The reason is because they have so many unreleased music on TH-cam that’s not streamable, so they make an album that has all of it.
I have a feeling they will be releasing another one soon because on TH-cam we are stacked with more than 20-30 unreleased songs that we can’t stream on Spotify or Apple Music etc. they release this randomly throughout the year when they feel like it. Some of the other members also produce their own songs.

Sorry Im not able to go through the comments right now and see if this has been mentioned yet, but heres a little run down on the structure of this album. Everything from track 9 (gods menu) on were originally on the album “Go Live” which was their first studio album. God’s menu, the lead single, went very viral and was a huge point for them in popularity and in production. You can also definitely hear its influence in their era of kpop, other kpop producers have mentioned labels coming to them and asking them to produce something similar to that or Thunderous, but its really hard to recreate that chemistry in the way that SKZ have since the producers are people in the group that know the other members’ strengths so well and have spent years cultivating that sound.
Following that lead and momentum, they released a “repackage album” which is the kpop adjacent to a Deluxe album, about 2 months later. It combined 8 new tracks and most of the songs from Go Live, though they did exclude a few of them in “In Life.” Thats why its so long. Go Live is also infamously where the “pots and pans” hate started (though there was hate before about their sound) and the group in turn leaned into that sound more. “You dont like pots and pans? Great, now Im gonna taunt you with MORE pots and pans.”
The tortoise and the hare is the extended version of the somg “Go Live” on the album “Go Live.” It is an extremely hated somg outside of the fanbase, people going so far to use it as a way to prove why they “suck.” But it does make them look silly since the production is so advanced, creative, and experimental. Not just anyone could make this song. The members, especially laptop guy, are cheeky about the hate. If theres a what SKZ song would you recommend, whats your favorite, which one would you like to perform question, someone will usually mention ttath😭 The leader, in response to a hate comment towards it during a live stream, once played the whole song through while giggling about it. Hate their creativity? They do not gaf, theyre standing on business.

"Breathe my guy!" Han: naaaah 😂 (same guy who had the high note you pointed out in Phobia)
Listening to this album with you makes me realize that the music videos do an Amazing job visually representing the amount of sound and movement in the tracks. I dont get to hear it but i can definitely see it. The videos that line up with this album especially. Its so cool to listen with you and finally recognize that there are cool visuals that provide for me (heavily hearing impaired) the impact you describe in sound.....oh and gods menus: literal pots and pans in the video 😅
Swearing: the never 'swear' in music or concerts etc..... However most members are bilingual korean/english and at least Chan speaks english/korean/japenese so they play like mad with lyrics to add swears and word play that truly takes understanding both languages to fully capture. Thankfully there are STAY who point it out for monolingual listeners!
Haven is often an encore song. The run around like lunatics splashing water on the fans and each other lol like a bunch of little kids on too much sugar!

I feel like In Life is their defining album. They had just gone through the turmoil of losing a member, wondering how the fans would take it, then going into Covid and not really being able to promote or tour. I think they really threw themselves into one another and found their sound through that. To me, this album showed they were true professionals and would be the next leaders in kpop and their music would resonate worldwide. Everything just clicked for them during this album and I think the joy the album brings in every song is a reflection of that. Tony, you and I are probably around the same age and I can see where some of their sounds bring back nostalgia of our youth because I definitely get that as well from Stray Kids. I jokingly refer to Han as my Korean Steve Perry.

Not sure if you’ll end up seeing this comment, but I came back here to recommend a video! Even if you just watch it in your own time. :)
      th-cam.com/video/1inY1P4Xn6Y/w-d-xo.htmlsi=-EIIsSRHLkheWffR
It’s the TA dance practice video, and I know TONS of fans love it, because you can tell they’re having a blast dancing in it. Especially Bang Chan (the guy with the laptop🤣). He’s wearing a red beanie in the video and has a big, goofy smile plastered on his face for the entire duration of the performance.
Also, I think something I’ve come to appreciate so much about Stray Kids, is that they’ve clearly worked themselves to the bone to be incredible artists all around. Through watching your videos, I’ve really been able to dig into their detailed production, from live videos I’ve heard them work on and improve their vocals continuously, and through dance practice videos you can see them work at being talented dancers. All of them also have taken the time to learn Japanese and the majority know English fairly fluently as well (obviously the Aussies would already though haha). Some of them also have hobbies that they have worked on, and share with the fans, like Hyunjin, who is very talented at drawing and painting. I don’t know where they find the time in the day to do so much. As someone who is the same age as four of the members, I find it equally fascinating and inspiring!

When God's Menu came out, there was no place for 4th generation artists across the K-Pop Industry. (You probably don't know, but the K-Pop industry is divided into generations and Stray Kids is the biggest artist of the 4th generation and one of its principles). Until God's Menu came out, Stray Kids was a group that even Stray Kids' label didn't value and considered expendable, which is understandable since Stray Kids' label has been known for popular female groups for generations. But today, Stray Kids is one of the 4 most listened Korean groups worldwide and is expected to rise to the 3rd place by the end of the year and is also among the 3 most listed Korean artists in Spotify history and in the 2nd place🔥 is now one of the most consumed artists of his label and the kpop industry and he has achieved this only with his own labor. He proved that you can be successful without conforming to popular western music trends and he is very popular especially in Europe, America, Japan, Latin countries and Russia.

    Quick rundown of stray kids:
    They all can rap.
Bang Chan: leader-3racha vocalist and rapper. His sound is the English more in your face blunt. Broad shoulders and short hair.
Changbin: 3racha-main rappers. His sound is usually more gravely and more staccato. More old school sounding than Han. Most buff of the group, but short. Does cutesy stuff all the time.
Han: 3racha- main rapper and high vocalist. His rap sound is usually more melodious and quick. Slim, short, and muscled arms. Very small waist.
Seungmin: main vocalist- his sound is the most of the melodious sounds in any song from stray kids. Usually dark hair, least muscled of the group, and a puppy looking face.
Felix: danceracha-vocalist and dancer. He is the very deep voice you hear. Blonde, angel/sunshine looking with muscles. Usually the main one to show off his muscles on stage.
Hyunjin: danceracha-vocalist and dancer. He also raps a lot. His sound is the more gangster sounding rap. Very slim but muscled, large lips and usually dark hair. Tallest of the group.
Lee know: danceracha-vocalist and main dancer. He does alot of the English lines in the songs. His sound is more American singer in his tone. Usually brown hair, catlike features and usually looks like he is the trouble maker.
I.N: youngest of the group-vocalist and dancer. His sound is very unique. More nasal sounding than the rest of the group. Round face large mouth. Buff now. Medium height in the group usually dark or brown hair.

I'll always support you 1000% on the bass. As a bassist myself, I can only agree their basslines and tones are killer. I've even gone as nerdy as to research which tracks had a real bass, and which tracks had synth/programmed bass. On their whole discography (before ATE). We talking 150-200 songs.
    WE LOVE SKZ BASS

Han, rapper, hitting the impossible high notes like a fucking nshfhsjd
Seriously, Han's high notes and Lee Know's falsetto give me life. I dont care how dramatic that sounds. I really dont. Bc holy fucking shit these guys are 8 weird little anomalies in the universe that some how came together and changed how I experience music.
This album was my first album from them and as you can see, i feel very strongly about it.

It was so great to see your reaction to Easy.... It will always have a permanent spot in my top 10 for them...
crash test dummies?! [I guessed wrong.... it was Extreme !]
From clips I've seen, it seems like Haven is the song they usually close down concerts with, although that may have changed as they have released more Stay-based songs since this.... A SKZ concert is on my win-the-lottery-bucket-list.

You are right in so many aspects.
Haven became SKZ last encore at the Lallapalosa in Chicago this summer.
Easy is easily my favorite as well, but the coreo and MV look cool and laid back but are far from easy.
The word play in Tortoise and the Hare (from the old fable) is witty and smart. "This is so fast.", but the actual lyrics are "Slow, slow, slow, slow....." and the ending a famous Korean nursery ryme.
Gods Menu - Here you have your pots and pans visually in the MV. The world play here is just fenomenal.
I think I could say that Gods Menu and In Life were their great break through.
I think you by now have established yourself as one of the most interesting reactors to SKZ on YT. Thank you! 🙏

Ahhhh this was everything I hoped for and more!!!! As always, thank you for truly taking the time to appreciate each song, whether it's a track you immediately like or one that simply impresses you for its musicality and artistic value. I'm glad you pointed out how deliberately they end each song; it demonstrates such commitment to the craft and reverence for every second of every song. I think it's why the only complaint I ever have for SKZ songs is that they are too short!! But I also appreciate how much respect they have for the fans-even more, how much they value the time of any listener and would never waste a second of it.
I'm so glad this album was such a hit for you!! It's been a joy and privilege to accompany you on this SKZ journey and I can't wait to see what you discover next. 🤘🤘🤘❤️❤️❤️.

The band was "Extreme" (Another Day). The way the guitar riffs were played.....🙂
Another Day is an outstanding song. It once more shows the versatile music of the guys.
I am so thankful, I "stumbled" over their music 1 3/4 years ago. ....SKZ saved me. Made my late life enjoyable again.🩷🌸

And often "Haven" is the last song they play 😊

Ollie is so cute omg I love seeing his cute lil face on the screen!
In Life is one of my fave albums for so many reasons. It would definitely be a bad album to take acid and listen to, but that's what makes the album fun lol!
So Bang Chan actually has very sensitive ears and he can tell if an instrument is out of tune in an array of instruments which is crazy. So he very much pays a lot of attention to the different sounds, production, and effects he uses. He is a perfectionist and makes sure his vision comes to fruition with the help of his 3RACHA bros Han and Changbin. I would love to see Chan answer all of the questions you ask because they're so insightful and would dig deeper into his process

Glad you like it! And I agree, I've been thinking this for ages but skz' style seemed to change a little starting with Noeasy. It's hard to put into words but In Life like you said has less crazy beat switch ups but it still has the weird sounds and interesting instrumentals, plus they're just so well crafted. From Noeasy it got a bit more experimental, and from Maniac even more so in my opinion.
I was always kind of scared that following their success they'd do what some other groups have done and change to fit the western audience. But damn skz, they did the opposite and got even crazier. I can always trust them to deliver

Awesome reaction as always! Just a quick heads-up if you’re thinking about reacting to "GO LIVE " album next.
Since "IN LIVE" is a repackaged version of "GO LIVE", it has most of the main "GO LIVE " songs, but not all. You can either listen to the full "GO LIVE " album or just check out the 5 songs that aren’t in "IN LIVE":
    - “Go Live” (a short intro song that was later extended to be "The Tortoise and the Hare")
    - “Top” + “Slump” (both soundtracks from the Tower of God anime, same series SKZ worked on recently with “Night” and “Falling Up”)
    - “Mixtape: Gone Days"
    - “Mixtape: On Track”
The rest of "GO LIVE " (starting from “God’s Menu” to “Haven”) is already in "IN LIVE".
