    I believe last question in B1 section could be either A or D depending on the context. If the reporting happens on the same day, you could say "He said he has to work tomorrow" since 'tomorrow' hasn't arrived yet. If the reporting happens farther in to the future, you would have to say 'He said he had to work the following day'.

    I'm a native English speaker from the United States. I got every question right except for B1 - Question 3. I chose "a," but I would argue that the answer for B1 - Question 3 could be either "a" or "d," depending on the situation.
    For example, if on December 14, 2022, a friend says, "I have to work tomorrow," and I report this to another friend that same day, I would use "a. He said he has to work tomorrow."
    Now, if on December 14, 2022, a friend says, "I have to work tomorrow," and I report this to another friend two days later, on December 16, 2022, I would use "d. He said had to work the following day."
    If I'm wrong in my thinking, feel free to correct me and explain why I'm wrong.

    • @rg1809
      @rg1809 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      American here as well, and I too find d the wrong answer. It is ambiguous. A is exact, he has to work tomorrow (future). "The next day" could be the day after any day next week. I suspect the question has to do with has vs had, but then, had is in the past.

      I was going to agree with you, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that neither answer is actually correct. What he actually said, and I quote, was "I have to work tomorrow". He may have implied either a or d, but what he said was what I quoted.

    • @someone878
      @someone878 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      D is the correct answer because it's indirect speech, isn't it?
      Let's say "I have to work tomorrow" is direct speech, maybe something a friend told me a few minutes before. If I wanna tell my sister what my friend told me, I can use indirect speech without directly quoting him. To form the indirect speech you need the past tense of the verb that was used (in this case have --> had). So saying "He said he had to work the following day" is the correct answer.
      BUT I'm not 100% sure if that's the right answer. I'm not a native speaker so maybe what I wrote is crap 🥲 But it's the same in German so that would make sense I guess.

    As a native English speaker from America, I had absolutely no idea what a clause was, haha. Yeah. I chose c for question 2 of the B1 test, because “”Have you been to Paris?’ ‘I have never been to Paris’” is pretty redundant and just sounds weird to say. You could just say no. It makes more sense to say you haven’t put been to Paris if you’re being asked how long you’ve been to Paris. You can’t just say “No.” so you clarify that you’ve never been there.

    • @the_demon149
      @the_demon149 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      For the question after that, any of the answers seem right (Except c). It depends on when you’re reporting. Or maybe British English is slightly different from American English, and that’s what the problem is? Still doesn’t make much sense.

    I'm Dutch, and I got everything correct, except for level B1 question 3. I said "a", and it should be "d". I was in doubt, between "tomorrow" and "the following day", but it's not about that at all. It's about the form of having, it's in the past tense, of course. He said he HAD to work the following day. I'm still proud of myself.

    • @loganbissett1392
      @loganbissett1392 ปีที่แล้ว +182

      I'm a native English speaker watching this video out of curiosity and I checked that question and I picked "a" because that's how I would've said it in real life. In fact, it would sound very unnatural to me to say it the "proper way" but maybe that's because I'm from Texas and "we don't talk good" lol. But rest assured that your answer would be understood exactly the same as the correct answer in conversation by every English speaker. So don't feel discouraged about missing that question because in real life no one would even notice it's not the "proper" way to say it.

      @loganbissett1392 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      @@_hltn I get that but the reality is that most likely the only context in which you’ll have to report that sentence in real life is one in which answer “a” would make perfect sense and sound more natural. I genuinely can’t think of a single time I’ve been in a situation where I needed to report this sentence where answer “a” would be confusing due to chronological reasons. Of course that would change assuming the context of the conversation was that it happened weeks ago, but that scenario is astronomically less common than the first one.
      Overall I think it’s a poorly thought out question that doesn’t factor in how rare the context is for the correct answer to be relevant and necessary, and missing it definitely does not mean you’re still at B1 level.

    Of course D is also correct, but in a scenario where Person A says "I have to work tomorrow" and Person B, somewhere in the background shouts "What did he say?" I would respond with "He said, he has to work tomorrow". While A is more natural, D is more of a "written" way to say it...something that you would see more in textbooks or narratives.

    I did the advanced test (though it did say it was a Beta testing version) and got to “working towards C2”. This was the level I hoped to attain as I’m a native speaker, brought up in the outer suburbs of North London and now live in the outer suburbs of South London. My highest English written exams were English literature and English language (O level) taken when I was 14 - around June 1962, so 61 years ago. As a consequence I had to guess the meaning of some of the grammatical terms - I guess the current English syllabus has renamed some of the terms I was taught and when English grammar is brought into line with the grammar of other languages there may have been some new terms too. There were a couple of answers which I would describe as correct English, though maybe a bit pedantic and there was at least one where many colloquial speakers would go for a more relaxed alternative than the formal but correct version! You have to fit in with your peer group - in “Sarf Lond’n” we “speak in yer mates lingo!”. Of course that isn’t the aim of your website and lessons. Keep up your good work!

    I think for us non-native speakers, grammar is something we have been learning in school ever since, but speaking of how to use the right word, phrasal verb, idiom, slang, and collocation in the context, that makes things really tough and becomes a nightmare for some of us, and it demands that we go beyond the courses and dive into the culture of the language and so much more. Do I say I have a C1 level because I had most of the responses? Absolutely not, because for non-native speakers, grammar is our comfort zone, and that holds us back from the journey of fluency. So I need to look into my weaknesses and turn them into strengths. I appreciated this marvellous challenge. Thank you so much

    I got B2 as the result of the test and I’m a 12 year old Brazilian girl. I started learning it when I was 10 through internet: I listened to music with the lyrics and watched TH-cam normally but in English. I understand 90% when I listen to a conversation in English! What motivated me was my English cousins because I wanted to understand them. Now I do! I really want to learn a third language: maybe German, Russian, or French… who knows. Anyways, thanks for this test, Lucy.
    Edit: Now I'm 13, and I've chosen to learn German (such a unique language!). I aim to become a polyglot when I'm older. I’m currently focusing on improving my German and, also, my English, with the goal of reaching C1 in it.
    Update: Now I’m almost 14, took the EF SET test and got C1. I started to learn Russian and I sometimes watch YT videos in Spanish (Mexico). Well, I’m enjoying it. I wanna see how much Russian I can learn in 2024.

      Good on ya. Once you get to that level, just keep exposing yourself to the language as much as possible. Learning a second language this early gives you even the chance of learning it to a level you could sound native. The brain and hearing system "locks in" later in life to a particular accent/language and it becomes harder to even hear when you make small mistakes with phonemes...

      I'm a swede and got C2, because I do know the _swedish_ grammar terms and was able to guess them here. @TheWanderstar ปีที่แล้ว +2

But it's kind of fascinating that the language is so vast, even being entrenched in it for 27 years isn't enough to have learned everything. I feel it's definitely one of those languages you have to go out of your way to learn in its entirety.

    • @perl4396

      Not really, it’s plain and simple, there’s strict order of words, loads of books for learners.
      For example, Russian language has no strict order of words, so it could get really bad and confusing to foreigners, also each rule has like a thousand exceptions to it, I guess there’s really no point in making up the rules if you don’t break em😂😂😂
      Take a look at mandarin, these damn fools don’t even have letters in the language
      With that being said, English is one of the easiest languages to learn, maybe not master, but you easily could get like b2 or c1, which is enough to speak and understand

    • @persiebun

    I think my level is between B2 and C1, cause I guessed right all from A1 to b1. However I got it wrong one in B2 one in C1 and one in C2... I'm satisfied for my results... The only thing that really matters is to keep learning... Thank you Lucy I really appreciate your work.✌🏼

    I am quite pleased with scoring C2 as a non-native speaker (I am Dutch 40 y/o). The only questions I got wrong were the questions on the naming of tenses, I just have no idea. I know past, present, and future; but the more specific ones never seemed to stick with me on school. Mostly because outside of school there appears to be zero use for them unless you'd want to study English.

    Very nicely put together. Thank you. And sorry if this has been commented on already, but as to C2-Question 1@ 7:40 shouldn't it be "generally unhappy nature" because unhappy is being modified which is an adjective. It requires an adverb. "General" is an adjective which can only modify nouns, which would be "nature."

    I officially have a C2 level in English ! I am not British or American but English was the first language I picked up. So, I am extremely elated to know that I am proficient in it. I have always been good at writing in English, which explains why I know quite a lot of idioms and phrases. This was a very well set test !!

    I just discovered you channel and immediately took the test! Results say I'm at C2 level and I'm so happy with it. I'm Italian, I've studied English for many years in school, university, by myself but I never got the chance to actually certificate it. I rarely speak or use English language in my everyday life, I hardly used it for work but in a very basic way so I felt very satisfied when taking your test because it means I still have it! I appreciate so much your way of teaching and your perfect British English. I'll follow this channel from now on, it will surely help me improve myself even more ❤
    I think that what changes everything when learning English as non native speaker is when you actually start thinking in English in your own mind! That's very powerful and game changing!

    Well Lucy, I'm happy to say that my English teachers' constant emphasis, over six years, on hammering it into my thick skull that my undeniably cute Northern Scottish accent and dialect might well work with the ladies but it wasn't going to work as I traveled around the World where the English standard was based on the Oxford model. As they all used to say to me: "You're not going to sit down in Hong Kong with your broad Aberdeen brogue and be at all understood by someone who sat in his University in England and learned how to conjugate a sentence in proper English." They made it categorically clear that I needed to speak English to be understood by millions, or even billions, and not a quarter of a million people in Aberdeenshire (Grampian).
    We were taught English Language and English Literature and were made to understand every element to a high level of competence. It was of great assistance to contemporaneously be studying Latin for those six years to know the root of most of what words were being used and the commonality between English, French, Spanish, Italian etc. Students should be learning as many languages as they can to grow their vocabulary exponentially.
    Thanks for taking the time to teach the language to the highest standard.

    My girl friend brought her 10-year-old daughter (not previously exposed to English) over from Argentina to Los Angeles, California at the beginning of the fall semester. The child was then enrolled in an age-appropriate grade level with mixed Spanish and English speaking children, and by the end of the semester was speaking English without a Spanish accent. Being smart, young and heavily influenced by wanting to "fit in", all contributed to her rapid progress. As a 70 year old male, I can imitate accents fairly well, but learning to use a foreign language's grammar correctly at speed would be very difficult. My girl friend from Argentina is an ace at English grammar, but murders English pronunciation.

    Hi, Lucy. I am not coming from an English speaking country, but I have been speaking the language for over 25 years to date. Thanks a lot for such an interesting test. I have got C2 as per your little exam. However, I think you should have given a little more time for the B1 and B2 questions to encourage test takers and makes them feel more knowledgeable. Great challenge though. Thank you!

      The time is not that important though. When you go through the test, there's no such thing as 5 seconds per question. You have about 30 minutes to answer 20 questions or so. That's what I know. Keep in mind that I passed IELTS 10 years ago, so some things might have changed, including my memory 😅

    A1 Q2 is a fairly amusing one: I would expect it to have higher failure rate with native speakers than with foreign learners (intermediate or better). Similarly, things like theirs / there's, I've seen so much of that on various forums.
    I passed everything but B2 Q3, but I also started pausing the video shortly (not more than 15 seconds) for the questions with 4 sentences (it takes a trained eye to spot mistakes quickly, and not everyone is an English teacher). C2 Q2 was a fluke for me though, I don't even know what dearth or efface means.

    According to the test, I'm a C2. This didn't come entirely unexpected, but I still find many of your videos extremely useful, especially when it comes to common phrases and expressions, as English, like any other language, is constantly evolving, The base of my English is still my school English from the 80s with a top-up of having lived in London for four years in the early 2000s, but stagnant since then, so I'm not always on top of the latest developments in current usage. That's why I appreciate your videos so much: They help me to stay in touch with the language and to keep enhancing my vocabulary.

    No mistake... However... Thanks for it... Though I learnt the C2 level at the age of around 13-14 years only... As I'm now... 16 , dealing with Shakespeare, Dickens and Tolstoy, also tennyson... Love the english for its lucidity and transperent expression in multitude of angles and perspectives and usage. Always keeping up to push the boundaries...
