The Gentle Lady is a true lady. As with other, this was also my first model airplane in the early 80’s, and I had it for 40 plus years. It would be nice if someone would bring it back. A close flying approximation is the Night Radian, but not quite…
@@allwinds3786 Hello Ms. Anderson, sorry to hear about your Gentle Lady. Mine met its demise a couple of years ago. It decided to dive straight into the ground at 70 mph from 1,500 feet above. The onboard GoPro captured the entire flight! I will load the video on my channel for you. I'm about 100 miles north of Warren Dunes.
Goldberg could really design an airplane. I loved my gentle ladies! High start, winch, cox .049TD and electric... all beautiful. Also sloped one a little. What fun
The plane I learned how to fly with! Then built my own plane, a Wanderer. Wish I still had it. Thanks for posting this. Brings back good memories of relaxing afternoons slope soaring and catching thermals. Now the hills are covered in homes and you have to deal with dumb restrictions from the Feds on anything that flies and is remote controlled. Damn drones ruined the hobby IMO.
I saved my money, bought a kit and built it by myself when I was 10 years old. Miss those times when I kid could walk into a hobby shop and buy this kit for under $30 (1990).
@@AerialWaviator unfortunately kits I've seen go for more than twice that, either old or new, if they are unbuilt in the box. There aren't many modern kits like this anymore, you can get a Peter Goldsmith Designs Opal which is similar but much nicer and it cost $200 for the kit. Or you can go smaller to keep the price down, such as the 250 size Gentle Lady from Willies Nillies which can be bought for $50 for the kit.
@@aaronredbaron True, there are a larger number of listings asking $200, but have seen more reasonable pricing. For Micro Gentle Lady kits AngelWing Designs (UK), or Aloft Hobbies (US) also ship ~1.2m (30 inch) span versions in addition to Willies Nillies. They are sub-250 grams, so avoid remote-id requirements.
My first RC plane! 🎉 1990. I still have the plans in a tube somewhere! My Fav. Was the dynaflight skeeter! Perfect for slope soaring with a more agile smaller design.
Keeps showing us how old we are. . . How amazing the early Carl Goldberg kits were. The wonderful way that no one else knows how to. Majestic flying on this channel. It's superb. The music. The productions. The best. I still barely get out. Lost one in a tree after 40 some years last week!
Beautiful. Reminds me of my Sig Riser, almost finished the restauration. That thing taught me how to thermal. The Gentle Lady, Riser and the Spirit are the big three of the beginner gliders, with surprising performance in the hands of a capable pilot.
The first RC model that I successfully built myself and flew was the electric version of this, the Electra. Circa 1990. I later bought the Sophisticated Lady, which I also really enjoyed. So nice to see this timeless classic flying again. Thanks for sharing and best regards from Brasilia, Brazil.
me as well. Electra in mid 80's. Taught myself to fly with that wonderful plane. Use to get >30 min flight times, which was amazing considering the crude on/off motor control and the heavy NiCd pack. testament to how fantastic the design was.
My first was a Marks Wanderer in the 70s. Great sloping off the cliffs in San Francisco much like your wonderful spot. Next was a gorgeous Graupner Cirrus that unfortunately went out to sea when I failed to switch on the receiver! I just re-covered Wanderer #4 and updated the old radio (an Ace RC kit build). I found it in my garage loft after 40 years…can’t wait to relaunch it!
Thank you. This is my second Gentle Lady. I built my first in 1989 but couldn’t afford the radio gear to put in it. I never flew it and can’t remember what happened to it.
Framed one up in '86 had countless flights. Flew it till the hanger rash clobbered it. Did not make it to retirement hah. Great video. Thank you for sharing.
Hi John, A timeless beauty. Had one in the 70's and first glider I flew from a Hi-Start. Gave it away to the son of a club member for his start in RC fun.
I built several Gentle Lady's. The last was a masterpiece. I launched it off a hi-start, forgetting to switch on the reciever 1st. It thermalled away into the distance. Never to be seen again...
I used to have a gentle lady, it was a very good plane. We didn’t have slops in Oklahoma so I put an OS 10 on it, I could take it my desired altitude, idle back and sore for a long time.
I had a gentle lady in 1991 with a cox 049 mounted to the top. Man I had fun with it and this brings back memories. I’d try to see how high I could get it so it could glide a few minutes and land her in my front yard
Gotta shair one story. Perfect conditions one day for flying at the lake site. Pull into my regular spot with a small ridge in the park right on the water! Well a biker gang was in the spot next to me about 59 yards over! I'm setting up the Gentle Lady and the inebriated bikers started snickering thing about " he's going to play with his little toy airplane" ect. ect ! Well I just launched into a light wind coming across the lake straight into the small ridge. Soar up and down the ridge getting higher each pass and after about 5 passes I was high enough to fly to a 75' ridge 50 yards behind me. I make a few passes back and forth then a thermal came through and so I cored it and specked out. The jokes had subsided and oooos and aaaas took there place! I then flew was out over the lake and did loops rolls stalls then came down and back to the small ridge and after a couple of soaring passes flew down and buzzed the bikers then flew it back and cought it in my hand! I got a standing ovation from the bikers!!!
John FINALLY flies a glider I don't have to have airplane envy for, because I have two. The flying site envy continues, however . . . Another nice video.
beautifully filmed beautifully flown with beautiful music what more could you want? Healthy and Friendly Greetings from the Netherlands! ( Wait? I forgot the plane!... also very beautiful! ) 😉 Rob
I had one too after my Airtronics Super Questor which I like much more. You should do a build of one, plans are on Outer Zone. What covering is that green? I've been looking for a very bright color like that. I notice you have it on your Big Delta and few others.
great plane and a great flying area. where is that? I'm traveling in southern England at the end of October. Be sure to take something to fly with. greetings from Switzerland
The lift is better to his right, the shape of the hill is better for the direction of the incoming wind. Been flying gliders for 30 years, not really a contester just enjoy flying slop desert cliff
Music is a bit naff. I'd much rather listen to the glider LOL. In all seriousness I do love you vids and passion. I have a 'Lady' but motorised as we have no slopes around. Cheers.
The wind is coming from the sea and is being forced up over the slope. The glider is effectively always flying downhill through the wind, just like a bike getting energy from rolling down a hill. But because the wind is rising up over the hill the glider doesn’t loose height.
My first ever RC model , if that model hadn't been so forgiving, I'd have probably given up .
I didn't .
A beautiful design .
Mine was an amigo 2 with a little cox motor😂
Vielen Dank für eure wunderschönen Kommentare, es bereitet mir sehr viel Freude, zu lesen, welche Erinnerungen ihr damit verbindet 😊
Timeless classic! EVERYONE that like R/C soaring should own this legend.
I have one. Had it since the 80's. Love it

The Gentle Lady is my first model airplane. I taught myself to fly with it in 1982. 😎👍🛩❤

Everyone should have at least one Gentle Lady in their history. Such a great design, simple and near-perfect at what it sets out to do
I agree. It was my first RC sailplane (1982) and I loved it. I enjoyed many hours of slope soaring and thermal soaring with it
I had The CG Gentle Lady and Sophisticated Lady back in the early 90's. Both flew amazingly
My first RC airplane in 1980. Still in the rafters. Makes me want to restore it with modern gear. Thanks John!
