Note: Times have changed since this video was posted! Most manufacturers now lap coil their ropes or have some sort of system for removing ropes from packaging to stop it from twisting. Check the packaging and instructions to see if you still need to use this method.
I don't know if it was a Beal, but let me describe how i once saw a rope taken out of its new packaging and coiled for the first time in Yosemite. 1) Take the new rope down to the sandy beach beside the Merced River in the meadows behind the Lodge and across from 4 2) Remove the wrapping and flake out the rope onto the sand 3) Grasp one in firmly in one hand and walk along the beach for the length of the rope (50m +/-) 4) Vigorously whip the rope back and forth, up and down for a few minutes. Get it thoroughly sandy and dusty. 5) Drop the end in hand and walk back to the other end. Repeat step 4) 6) Coil up the rope, dragging the length of the rope through the sand. Secure the ends, shake off excess dust. 7) Toss the rope over head and shoulder and walk back to 4 feeling confident that you now the very image of an Yosemite hard man. True story; I watched this procedure from step 2) while enjoying an afternoon in the meadows down by the river. Amazing!
If you twist those plastic straps inside out at the seams, you can usually grab the bit that's not adhered to the strap, pull it and have it pop free. That way there are no sharp objects near the rope. This also works for wristbands at beer festivals.
Yeah...... so I just uncoiled my new rope. THEN I saw the little warning sticker at the back of the instruction manual (not that I would've actually read the instruction manual for a rope... admittedly) saying the rope must be uncoiled properly or there could be permanent twists in it. The previous rope I bought, I didn't pay attention to that either. It,s the first time I notice anything about there being a proper way to uncoil a rope. And my previous rope did tend to get twisted. I never knew why. I thought it was the way I was putting it back in my bag everytime. My way around this is that at the start of every session, after the first climb, I'll pass the entire rope through the top clip. It does make it much better, but I basically have to do it every session. If not, I always end up with bunches of twists at some point. Guess I just fucked up another rope.
So it seems like with edelrid's new ropes you don't have to do this. Just pull it all out into a pile the "bad" way and then do what you did at the end before making the "rucksack". This is because they already twist the rope as they're coiling it, so what would usually cause it to get twisted actually untwists it.
Hey guys, just a PSA, if you can't get to the middle of the rope and uncoil it from there, just spool it from one end to the other with your hands like he shows in this video. I tried doing it this way and it didn't help at all. Depends on how your rope is coiled. Edit: What I mean to say is, watch a bunch of vids before deciding what to actually do as you cant really undo your choice once you start.
It will if you use the rope! run it through a quickdraw without any weight on it several times (10 or so times). This should get all the twists out of it.
This comment should be at the top....definitely not a thing to really worry about IMHO. I'm not saying you can't make a twisted mess of it, just that it isn't really something to stress over. I will happily accept any ropes improperly opened, and dispose of them for you. 😉
Depends on the rope manufacturer. It depends if they lap coil it from the machine like petzl do for example. Beal used to coil ropes onto a spool so you had to uncoil it like shown in this video or you had a massive mess. This video has clearly helped a lot of people! Also rope management to avoid twists is a skill and an art that needs to be learnt. A twisted rope can seriously damage the core.

I wish I would have seen this before I uncoiled my rope. It's a huge mess now.
Love the toilet paper explanation -- instantly understandable by anyone!
haha, glad it works!

Makes me want to cry.
So glad I saw this video before I uncoiled my new rope. Thank you for sharing this helpful information!
Just started getting into climbing and got my rope in the other day. So happy I was able to see this video before uncoiling it!
Glad I could help!
Years later, I've come back to your video 😊. Way to go, still being THE top result for uncoiling a new rope!! Thanks for your help again! Cheers!
Yay! Thank you!
Excellent video, good explanation of everything. Just bought a rope, and I'm happy that I watched it before I just started to use the new rope.
Good! I’m glad you did too!
I’m new to this I am grateful I saw this video as I have a new rope coming next week.
You’re welcome!

Guy Wettstein: Love the analogy!
Great thank you, as I am about to bike to Tiso's to purchase my first rope. Pleased I viewed your instructions.
You're welcome!
Excellent video taught me everything I needed to know about new ropes! thnx =)
Thank you so much Dave for the video (and the cool rope binding technique at the end of the video :-))
Hey thanks for the video. I'm expecting my very first rope ever to be delivered in just a couple hours I appreciate the help.
No worries!
Excellent
Thanks
Thanks for this. Very helpful information.
👍
What do I do, if I opened my rope and uncoiled it wrong?
Video has simple editing and camera work but is a high quality tutorial
Excellent tutorial!
And thanks for speeding up the repetitive section!
haha, you are welcome!
very good explanation of why the rope twists on a new rope.
Thanks!
Cool info, I didnt know. Thanks!
Your Welcome!
Frick. Wish I had this literally 4 days ago. Took me ten minutes to uncoil my new rope.
Oh no Sorry to hear that!
CONGRATS Mister Dave , very helpful !!!!!!!!!!!! CHAPEAU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best Wishes.
Thank you! Cheers!
What about the magic pack rope packages? Says you can just pull it put, is that okay?
Absolutely! Things have changed since I made that video…
Thanks for this.
You're welcome!
Nice video!! TKS!! Say hello to Brazil!!
Thank you!
Excellent video, and a good explanation of whats going on. Thank you. Very helpful.
You are welcome!
My Beal rope didn’t have the loose ends on the same side like that and be middle was in no way able to just come out like that.
mine too.
Damn! I guess they changed the system they use to coil the ropes..
Thanks Dave! Informative and very useful!
Oh... Look at you, all fancy like, with your knowledge and forward thinking... Yeah. I like that.
Nice video who want to learn and who start to using Rope.

Well now you can avoid all those problems forevermore!

That’s interesting. More and more manufacturers are doing lap coils rather than spooling from the factory which is good!
This explains me cursing in my room with 150’ of rope in my hands tangled.
Oh no that sucks.... You can fix it if you run it through a single carabiner many many times..
Thanks cuz, awesome!
Any time!
thank you!
Thanks!
Hi there! Can I use this rope as a single rope?
Hello, Yes you can but it's better as a half rope e.g when used with another rope.
cool stuff.
thx!
Glad you liked it!

True words there. You pass the point of no return very quickly when unpacking rope :-)
the same thing happened to me lol... just spent 20 minutes untangling my rope
I'll remember this for when I'll buy some rope!
👍
Thanks a lot!
You're welcome!
Thanks Dave...
You are welcome!
How convenient that you had a toilet roll in your bedroom.
This has aged well...
@@AKelly-wd4lj Hot commodity now.
This video would have been helpful before this past weekend 😂
Fuck my Beal rope was already a mess when arrived. Couldn't fix it already
I spent 25 minutes sorting through the mess I made yesterday wish I knew this beforehand haha
opps!
Just out of curiosity (and anxiety), uncoiling the rope the wrong way won't ruin the rope, right?
It will if you use the rope! run it through a quickdraw without any weight on it several times (10 or so times). This should get all the twists out of it.
Omg thank you so much I had no idea how to...what?
Just tried with my new Tendon rope and it was a complete failure aha😅
Genius!
Thanks Govanni!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hi. Nice video bro)
Thank you!
“Now, if you imagine climbing on toilet roll...”🤣
Just kidding, great video 🤘🏻
haha. Thanks!
Pas possible : un Anglais qui plie sa corde à la Rebuffat !!!!!!!
This is 60m, few kilometers from my home, i have this -> th-cam.com/video/ZU1WeyYZdjA/w-d-xo.html , and I need 70m rope.
Ah man. I thought this was a video on how to wipe.
haha
Tried this with my mammut rope. Didn't really work. Now it's a fucking coily mess! they seem to be coiled up differently so beware!
Right way 's to ...wakeup the new rope's ! I see
Boss
Thanks!
Tell that to my head phones -_-
??
Rubbish
Don't even worry about how you unpack it .
Think about it your rope will be running through anchors and will twist regardless . 😂🤔🙄

His voice tho

did he say "without further a jew"?
He said "without further ado" which means "without further delay"
haha, Without further ado!
