True..this will add more colors in the world of armored vehicles. ive also read that in WW2, the Japanese army almost operates their own heavy/main battle tank after their representatives visited germany to survey the germans tank building programs and they also build and tested the japanese version of tiger tank prototype.. Sadly the agreements and the programs stop and didnt passed the prototype status.. IF it was a success.. i think today we can at least see 1 japanese version of Tiger MBT in a museum somewher and the story of armored warfare in the pacific theatre will be much more fun and interesting..lol..
@@zadzad4353 negative they boxed it up in order to send it over after Japanese generals came to see it in action they put a order in for one and it never left Germany cause they realized they’d never be able to come up with the metal needed to mass produce tigers and the Allie’s coc blocked the routes needed to get it out
Not a bad copy considering Hungary's industrial capacity at that time. I also like the hunting version. Never knew it existed. Imagine if they could have put it into production.
The tas is a very good looking tank, it’s a shame it was never produced. It would be neat to see a video in the turan III. Hungarian tanks are very interesting and it would be cool to see some more videos about them.
Just something that might be useful to know: At 4:28 on the bottom of the blueprint there is a writing that says it's actually a reconstructed version of the original drawings that have been heavily damaged, so that might explain why certain parameters are different
The only thing is: There are a lot of "blueprint" tanks and half-true vehicles. WT allows for other vehicle categories, but they demand more realism. This and the lack of unique post-war and modern vehicles makes it even harder to get into WT. In case of WoT, not enough vehicles, But it allows for more "blueprint" tanks. It was always hard fight, but there were almost no victories.

Early war stages? This would have outclassed every early war tank by miles. I think the Tas was still a competitive design for 1943-1945, although by 1945 not being the strongest design out there, but still capable.
I know what you mean about learning about new exotic tanks and weapons. I lean more towards naval and small arms history and recently started diving into German U-Boats for the first time in a decade. The number and loadouts of the various types of U-Boats is so much more than what you see in movies and even the best games.
Now after roughly 80 years, Hungary finally is allowed to make Panthers. Rheinmetal has a factory in Hungary that produces the Lynx and is planning to also build their new Panther MBT there.
Love the unknowns about tank projects.. I have a suggestion if you find it interesting its caled the SO-122 what i know about it is that its supposedly a 122mm sherman.

Hy. I originally researched a bit about this tank and some little things: The second tank, the Tas Assault Gun ( Tas Rohamlöveg), was probably a similar case to the Panzer2. The 1 Tas prototype was made in Mafred Weiss's factory near Budapest. The US air force bombed the industrial facilities in Budapest on that day, and one of their main target was that factory, because most of the tanks were made there. After the bombing, they managed to gather what they could and bring some parts and half-done chassis of the Zrinyi 2's to Győr, to the MAVÁG factory, for assembly. The prototype was heavily damaged and there was no time or money to restart the production. The Factory was located in Csepel, one of the main industrial parks of the time. It was interesting concept, they got the idea of the suspension from the Panzer 3, because that allowed for smooth ride in mud. They asked for the 75mm PaK 40, but it got denied too, because the export was closed. The rating of the tanks( Classes) was done in comparison to the other vehicles, used by the country. You can see this at Italy too. The P-26 was also a heavy tank for them. Some people refer this as the "compact" Panther, because it was smaller in size.
The PaK 40 wasn't denied from Hungary, we purchased the license. The DiMÁVAG(Diósgyőr) produced some of them. However,they have problems of manufacture thanks to material shortages. That also became painful regarding the 7,5 cm 43M tank and assault gun weaponry.

It should be noted that speed not only depends on horsepower but also on the gear ratios of the transmission system, including any final drive. The reason for the top speed difference between this and the Jumbo could be entirely due to differences in transmission gear ratios. Of course, a taller gear means slower acceleration, but, to some degree, this can be made up for by having more gear selection. Them there is also the torque curve of the engine to consider, as well as the maximum rpm. The same gear ratio will account for a higher speed of the engine(s) in question can reach a higher rpm. The fact that the Sherman's used radial engines and this used V engines can drastically affect the torque curve and maximum attainable RPM. It is quite a bit more complicated than weight and horsepower.

It seems the blueprints still exist. I visited the Military Museum in Budapest and I really think they should get a 3D printed lifesize copy made. Their existing exhibits are already amazing and this would be a great addition.
I was getting into table top wargaming in the 90's, local club decided to do Barbarossa as a campaign. Being a full on inverse snob, I deep dove into the other nations and went Hungarian for my force. Must admit, there was a LOT or erroneous information around back then so I had a LOT of errors in my force. Turned out my force was not quite the speed bump most people thought it was going to be. While I could not really hurt the big Russian armour, without infantry support is was not doing much.

Bought the hobby boss tank the night I watched this the first time I watched this film. Also purchased Friulmodel tracks for it. I liked instantly the suspension as I was never a fan of the Tiger and Panther family of tanks over lapping road wheels. What a nightmare for their crews. Great film!

Great video!! Never heard of this tank until a few years ago when plastic modeling companies started releasing kits of Hungarian WWII armour. Think it was Hobby Boss that created a 1:35 scale kit of this vehicle. Purchased the kit and it was a fun/educational build, so did some research. Everything you posted in the video is basically what I discovered as well. Also, there are plastic model kits of the Hungarian Turan and Turan II, as well as the tank destroyer version that is mentioned in this video and a mobile Nimrod anti-aircraft version - all in 1:35 scale. Having the 44M placed alongside a Panther really does look intriguing - wonder if the 44M would have been as good as, if not better than, Panther???
Probably better, considering it would have used dual transmission, thus not straining its final drive so badly, would have had better protection, and even though an inferior gun, it still.would have been sufficient against anything up to an IS2.
with the prototypes and tooling destroyed in the bombing raid, the 44M is one of the only military projects of ww2 to be completely destroyed by strategic bombing

What I would love to see a some Mad lad that would decide to build tanks like these. That were only drawn on paper and even some mock up build. Of course only the tanks that would be capable to build. Not like a E-100 ar Rat. Would be very interesting. I know there would be shit ton of problem being allowed build it and so on. But making a museum of paper tanks.

Probably not many of you paid attention to the ambient music under the video. It's the Hungarian national anthem. The fun fact about it is that although it existed since 1844 (and 1823 as a poem), and it was always sung as the national anthem, it was only made official in the 1989 constitution. That's right, Hungary technically had no official anthem throughout most of its history, no matter what everybody believed.
Great information. This was the first time I ever heard about this tank. I wished the Hungarians had fielded this tank. It seem to have some great potential and would have loved to see if could stand-up to T-34/85 and other allied tanks. Overall very interesting design. I guess Hungarian Partisans got word to the allies of the 44M Tos which caused the end of the program. Thank you for sharing.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I genuinely believe that the Hungarian tank development was on the same level as the Italian. Granted, Italy wasn't known for making excellent tanks, but Hungary was a quarter of the population and barely had a tractor industry in 1936. I consider it a very valiant effort to basically start from scratch and being able to produce (smaller and weaker) analogs of the Panzer 2, (Toldi) Panzer 4, (Turán) and Panther (Tas) only a few years after Germany themselves field them.
I would say it in fact was better than italian, and closer to japanese. Italies best tank was the peasnte 26, which is a worse armoured slower turan 2 with a slightly longer gun (L34 as opposed to L31.8). And it wasnt even serial produced.
Could you maybe do the skoda tankette? There isn’t much info about it, but it would be pretty cool, maybe a short for it. Or the T-100 which was a failure project by the Soviet Union. Love your content keep doing it!

That tank destroyer variant with the angular casemate is reminding me of the non-Euclidean tanks I end up making in Sprocket when I screw around with the freeform hull too much.
Have to take in consideration that the Hungarian tank program was literally decades behind due to the WW1 peace treaties forbidding them to own tanks. Till the 30s all they had was a couple shoddy WW1 surplus designs smuggled in part by part. By the time they found themselves dragged into the war without any knowledge or appropriate industrial background they had to make good of almost three decades of lagging behind within years. Needless to say it wasn't a success, but as the video shows it was not for the lack of trying. Ultimately, the Soviet advantage in industry and technology was impossible to overcome.
@@peterjanossy7033 The Soviets based their tank program on british export models, like everyone else at the time right after WW1. By the 30s they had the T-26, based on the british Vickers, which they developed into the best tank of the 30s and built it in insane numbers. They had the expertise to build on in WW2

One minor thing though, Hungary wasn't allied to the germans. Germans occupied Hungary, and by threatening the governors family they got heel dragging cooperation. But saying that they were allies is like saying the poles were allied to the soviets.
Germany occupied Hungary in March 1944 with Unternehmen Margarethe, before that Hungary willingly supported Germany, because of the revisionist goals it had.
The allies during the entire war: Oh, so you are working on a cool project? NOT ON MY WATCH!!! „Proceeds to bomb the entire fucking region“ But for real, i have seen so many videos about potential vehicles just to find out that they were never finished because of allied bombing.
That looks like it could have been very effective if produced in high enough numbers and had trained crews. First time I can remember hearing about it.
Hungary had good doctrine and crews that proved themselves even with inferior vehicles, but it could never have produced them in great numbers. Even with serial production I doubt much over a hundred could have seen combat. Granted, a divisons worth of tanks that can go toe to toe with an IS could have made a difference at bagration, and the 1st cavalry was a good candidate to recieve such novel armament.

Great video!! Never heard of this tank until a few years ago when plastic modeling companies started releasing kits of Hungarian WWII armour. Think it was Hobby Boss that created a 1:35 scale kit of this vehicle. Purchased the kit and it was a fun/educational build, so did some research. Everything you posted in the video is basically what I discovered as well. Also, there are plastic model kits of the Hungarian Turan and Turan II, as well as the tank destroyer version that is mentioned in this video and a mobile Nimrod anti-aircraft version - all in 1:35 scale. Having the 44M placed alongside a Panther really does look intriguing - wonder if the 44M would have been as good as, if not better than, Panther???
Probably better, considering it would have used dual transmission, thus not straining its final drive so badly, would have had better protection, and even though an inferior gun, it still.would have been sufficient against anything up to an IS2.

with the prototypes and tooling destroyed in the bombing raid, the 44M is one of the only military projects of ww2 to be completely destroyed by strategic bombing

What I would love to see a some Mad lad that would decide to build tanks like these. That were only drawn on paper and even some mock up build. Of course only the tanks that would be capable to build. Not like a E-100 ar Rat. Would be very interesting. I know there would be shit ton of problem being allowed build it and so on. But making a museum of paper tanks.

Probably not many of you paid attention to the ambient music under the video. It's the Hungarian national anthem. The fun fact about it is that although it existed since 1844 (and 1823 as a poem), and it was always sung as the national anthem, it was only made official in the 1989 constitution. That's right, Hungary technically had no official anthem throughout most of its history, no matter what everybody believed.

Great information. This was the first time I ever heard about this tank. I wished the Hungarians had fielded this tank. It seem to have some great potential and would have loved to see if could stand-up to T-34/85 and other allied tanks. Overall very interesting design. I guess Hungarian Partisans got word to the allies of the 44M Tos which caused the end of the program. Thank you for sharing.
It's definitely a new tank I haven't heard of and I'm enjoying personally discovering and learning about new vehicles.

I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I genuinely believe that the Hungarian tank development was on the same level as the Italian. Granted, Italy wasn't known for making excellent tanks, but Hungary was a quarter of the population and barely had a tractor industry in 1936. I consider it a very valiant effort to basically start from scratch and being able to produce (smaller and weaker) analogs of the Panzer 2, (Toldi) Panzer 4, (Turán) and Panther (Tas) only a few years after Germany themselves field them.
I would say it in fact was better than italian, and closer to japanese.
Italies best tank was the peasnte 26, which is a worse armoured slower turan 2 with a slightly longer gun (L34 as opposed to L31.8). And it wasnt even serial produced.
I didn't know about this project. Hope for more forgotten ones in the future videos.

That tank destroyer variant with the angular casemate is reminding me of the non-Euclidean tanks I end up making in Sprocket when I screw around with the freeform hull too much.

Have to take in consideration that the Hungarian tank program was literally decades behind due to the WW1 peace treaties forbidding them to own tanks. Till the 30s all they had was a couple shoddy WW1 surplus designs smuggled in part by part. By the time they found themselves dragged into the war without any knowledge or appropriate industrial background they had to make good of almost three decades of lagging behind within years. Needless to say it wasn't a success, but as the video shows it was not for the lack of trying. Ultimately, the Soviet advantage in industry and technology was impossible to overcome.
Soviet technology? Do you mean 20years old American technology, what the USA give to the Soviets in the 1920-1930s?
@@peterjanossy7033 The Soviets based their tank program on british export models, like everyone else at the time right after WW1. By the 30s they had the T-26, based on the british Vickers, which they developed into the best tank of the 30s and built it in insane numbers. They had the expertise to build on in WW2

One minor thing though, Hungary wasn't allied to the germans. Germans occupied Hungary, and by threatening the governors family they got heel dragging cooperation. But saying that they were allies is like saying the poles were allied to the soviets.
Germany occupied Hungary in March 1944 with Unternehmen Margarethe, before that Hungary willingly supported Germany, because of the revisionist goals it had.
I really hoped that this would be in the most recent War Thunder update, would have been great.

That looks like it could have been very effective if produced in high enough numbers and had trained crews. First time I can remember hearing about it.
Hungary had good doctrine and crews that proved themselves even with inferior vehicles, but it could never have produced them in great numbers. Even with serial production I doubt much over a hundred could have seen combat. Granted, a divisons worth of tanks that can go toe to toe with an IS could have made a difference at bagration, and the 1st cavalry was a good candidate to recieve such novel armament.
