    You're SO right - a lot of us have dreamed about using old tiny nitro RC engines for bikes etc. If you're looking for a working clutch design for low-power engines, check out the old Honda CT 70 (and 50, and 90, and 110) "automatic" clutches. They're probably too heavy for this application, and they run in a light oil bath, but they're designed to operate reliably with 3.5-10 horsepower engines for years and years. I got a CT 70 when I was 12, beat it up for 4 years, gave it to my middle brother, who beat it up for another 4 years, then gave it to our youngest brother. He rode it until he turned 16 and got a Honda 200, traded it in and it was still on the original clutch plates.

    Can you reduce the spring pressure on the main clutch? I had a batavus years ago and I was able to stretch the clutch spring and remove a couple of the steel balls to raise the stall up preventing it from engaging at lower rpm. Made takeoff from a dead stop much better. Higher revs allowed the clutch to really grab instead of slip. Similar concept as to some of the comments below for the RC clutch.

    You have a CNC mill. Order a replacement crankshaft, turn and polish where it was obviously intended to have bearings, then modify the block to add cross bolted upper bearing supports and a new bottom plate with lower bearing supports that bolt into the upper bearings. With the right aluminum alloy it won't need any special coating or insert bearings. Many overhead camshafts run right on the aluminum head metal.

    4 inline banger needs atleast 3 crank bearings, 5 would be better. I also would split the case/block where the bearings are, bolt together with 2 alignment pins and line bore for the crank. because tiny bearing caps are a nightmare

    • @nerd1000ify
      @nerd1000ify 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One option is to make the crank webs also serve as the journals for large diameter rolling element bearings. This way the crankcase can just be bored through with no split bearing caps, and the crankshaft inserted by sliding it in axially. This approach was notably used in Tiger tank engines during WW2, but isn't popular now because the surface speed of the bearings tends to be a bit high for plain bearings.

      @Fantaman900 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nerd1000ify I think oversized bearing to slide the crank in axial might just be the way to go on miniature engines. No worries about surface speed when the whole engine is tiny.

    This is fantastic! When I was a kid, I always wondered if this was possible. The engine on my rc airplane looked similar enough to a motorcycle, but I couldn't test it when I was younger.

    That frame the way it is made. you can use it to make a mold to make a Carbon kevlar frame. sheet metal to Composite. just a thought I like the shape of that frame.

    That frame is an old NSU quickly , I had one in 1965, an old NSU Quickly two speed, I suped her up and got 45mph out of her!! My first "motor bike" and I loved her !! I rebuilt her from scrap parts, and boy did she go for a 50cc moped!! Good times !

    Just pedal up to a respectable speed then engage the little thing. Even my 66cc takes a pedal or two. I think it would do great on a jackshaft and using index gears

    If you want a clutch that engages at higher RPM, try a GT clutch, something like the Reds Tetra GT (MUAX0002). Though those only come with composite shoes so they'll likely burn up really quickly too. The Tetra Off Road with alu shoes (MUQU0066) on the hardest setting might work as well.
    The main thing though is that you'll likely need a much shorter gear ratio, the engine really didn't even get to rev at all in that test and I don't think letting a tiny clutch like that compensate for it by slipping until you're at the right speed would work out either.
    Though you have to keep in mind this is an incredibly cheap engine that definitely doesn't put out the 2.5HP it says on the box, idk how they can get away with such a blatant lie.

      These engines definetely put out alot of power. Maybe not the 2.5 but id believe 2 because i have several of them and they are really crazy

    I have a Cen/Gen 7.7 and was actually considering the feasibility of this the other day.
    Thanks to your amazing video, I have decided to go on to another project,
    like, keeping the nitro engine in the model where it is now, getting a beer and chasing my
    cats with the remote 7.7.
    16:10-An appropriately sized fan hub with thin, angled blades pressed onto the primary clutch body
    may allow the clutch body to shed heat in a more rapid manner than it does without a heat
    elimination strategy

    You need a really high actuation clutch. For example, on my bike with a ktm sx 50 engine, the clutch is triggered at 9-10 thousand rpm. If it's softer, the bike won't move.

    If you replace the first drive chain with a friction drive you could have better gear reduction since the smallest bike chain sprocket is relatively large. Or use #25 chain. Pocket bikes are available with a 5 tooth #25 chain sprocket.
