Nothing to fear. I used a real drill with the two bits (no patience since birth), working slooowly, while my Lovely Assistant vacuumed. Reminds me of the old joke: No one ever needs a drill bit... What you need is a hole
Yep, worked like a charm... took awhile to get the right cover pressure on the lens covers for them to open and close properly. But it's good as new now. Thanks for doing this!
Fantastic video, extremely helpful, I purchased a used G7X and discovered soo much dust, I am a 60 year old female and braved drilling the holes (purchased new sharp drill bits for it), I did use cordless drill carefully, that was the easy bit, all done and spotlessly clean now thanks to Matt. The top 2 fins each side came off with the cover despite being careful and the cover was a struggle to get off initially too, but with patience the fins all back in place too, actually my daughter did that bit - she has more patience and finer fingers for that fiddly bit. Thanks Matt
Thank you for this great informative Video, during our trip to Spain my wife whilst carrying her Cannon G7x Miii slipped and fell and banged the lens unit on the concrete causing the lens shutter to dislodge from its pivot, so it wouldn't open fully. Luckily the week before we left i fitted a polarizing to the front and that took most of the impact. Using your Video i managed to remove the front section and reassemble the shutter blades. Thank you.
Not sure why anyone is complaining in the comments. The alternative is buying a new one and this is pretty straightforward. Thanks for making the video. Used my dremel and it works like a charm.
I tried this out and recorded a how to video for my subscribers. I linked you in my channel to give credit for the idea. Thanks for posting this video!!
Good hack. I've been using a G15 for many years in the deserts of the southwest US and have hardly any dust inside. I've been using a magfilter adapter with a circular polarizing lens attached almost the entire time as well. If I run into dust issues with my P&S cameras I'll be sure to remember this.
Thank you soo much! At first I was scared to drill in but from there it went smoothly! This helped me so much and I think you deserve much more than you think. Keep doingwhat you love and stay positive all the time! 🔥 Thanks again!
Thanks a ton :D Very helpful tips - I found that the drill was a bit hairy, even when done super slow and carefully at the point you break through its easy to push the drill too far in and possibly scratching some glass
Thanks for the video. I managed to blast my G7X with a load of grit whilst trying to make a cool video fo ym quadcopter taking off.. bad idea! Took the metal cap off, and just gave all the exposed holes and openings a good vacuuming. I actually put tape over the vacuum cleaner nozzle to make a the inlet as small as possible in order to get the most suction. After a few goes and cycling it on and off, the lens eventually worked smoothly again :)
im happy it worked for you! yea... and now you can service your lens whenever you want. i have opened it up every week now and vacuumed it out with a q tip and its really perfect.
Hey... wanted to let you know - 2.5 years in - this video is still doing some good. You just helped me get some great shots and video at a music fest that I would have missed otherwise... sadly I slipped and fell in a creek a few weeks back and while I thought I saved the camera from serious water damage, I discovered a dried water spot a few days later that made the camera unusable... was stumped on what to do and found your video... One thing not obvious in the video (but obvious in hindisght) - there's a second lens inside the camera - and I missed cleaning it the first time and only cleaned top/surface lens. Anyhow, thanks for sharing.
Yup. The lower lens you can clean the top of if your careful. But if there is anything below that your Shit out of luck as far as I’ve been able to tell. So glad it was helpful!
I am a french Canadien living in Japan. I am about to purchase a Canon G7X mk2 for my YT videos and luckily found out about your channel! I love you videos! Thanks for the dust hack... still hope I won't have to do it, but it is good to know! peace
Very creative way of lens cleaning. Cost me 50 bucks to have someone dissemble the whole camera to clean inner side of the lens. It was a different camera, but I think your method would also work. Thumbs up.
I just did it! Mine is the G7X, first gen. I didn't think I'd be able to pull the metal cap off without breaking it. I did. 2 blades flew off. I put them back on, no problems there. I took an electric screwdriver/drill to make the holes. Started with a small bit (because it's very hard to get started, especially on a curved surface). When it went through I realized I shouldn't have pressed so hard at the end (when the long plastic chunks started forming). But nothing broke. When I put the big drill bit on, the drill just bit a few big chunks out of the plastic, passing physical shock to the entire camera (I thought I broke it, again, but no). In the end the hole was clean, pretty, and I think a bit smaller (the cotton swab has to "slide" through). I made the second hole, even though I thought it was useless, since I could reach all parts of the lens from the first one. I didn't use a vacuum cleaner. I just wiped, and shook off all the big parts while holding the blades. Then I put it back together again, and BAM! Good as new! Takes great shots, opens/closes without issues. I just missed 2 small pieces of dust, but that's nothing compared to how it was before (I was considering that if I broke it, it wouldn't matter that much anyway). But seriously Canon, thanks for making me hate my decision of not getting a Sony.
After finding dust INSIDE my lens, Googled "Canon GX7 dust inside lens" and this popped up. Genius! Just got through doing it and now my lens is dust-free. Two hints: Find a small flashlight of the approximate right size, remove the plastic or glass lens, use it to press down on the lens blades (scotch-tape it in place temporarily) while you do this (any round flat item would do... Does anyone have a 50 cent piece anymore? That'd probably work just as well). Also: have A Lovely Assistant (or the equivalent) be the third hand with the vacuum,
Hi, my g7x has the same problem, but I wonder if there is also dirt on the sensor itself? In sunny conditions I see a small circular unsharp area, looks like caused by a liquid. The size varies a bit. Would here drill + qtip help as well??
Thanks for sharing! I do have one concern though. Wouldn't this make it easier for the dust to get in now that we have two large holes? I mean even if the cap is covering the holes, I'm guessing that you'll still get more in there than before
no... i have used this technique for quite some time now.. and i dont see any more dust getting back there than was happening before.. its a very snug cover.
Great tutorial, and a very ingenuous solution. It's also great to see how your communication skills developed through all these years of video production are applicable to purely practica tutorials apart from your normal vloggin. Cheers!
Awesome! I have G5X that has same issues & is starting to compromise photo & video footage. I am sure both cameras share same lens mechanism, so happy to find this fix. Thanks!
haha... sorry boss... i would help you if you were close... get some fresh drill bits.. take your time... and do it the way i did... you should be good to go.
wow this is so clever. the older G3, g4, g5, g6, g7, g8, g9, g10 cameras had a metal lens tube that one could attach filters to and they protected the zoom lens from dust as well as impact damage. only down side is they make the camera more bulky. one could probably buy an old g10 lens tube and dremle it out to fit, but it would cover up the aperature ring! wish this camera was designed better!
thank you very much I followed your instructions and perfect I managed to clean the pollen that my canon gx5 had. Canon charged € 350 for repairing half the price of the camera to completely change the lens. Well now I have a 6500 sony but that little canon camera is very nice to shoot videos and photos on trips. Greetings from München!!
The drilling part terrifies me! If something goes wrong with the camera after the holes are drilled, doesn't that void my warranty (since I've made alterations?) ? I love the difference!
yea.. but the problem is that canon offers no warranty fix if the inside area is dirty... the image was getting so bad i didnt want to use the camera either way.... I had to do it. Actually it is a great solution if you take your time and are really careful.
I will be doing this repair to my Canon G7X, my local Canon agent wont fix it will replace the lens which will cost of half the cameras value.... Great tip thank you!!
Hi, I have a smudge like underneath the lens after the hole you’ve made.. any idea how to clean that? What If I made a hole in de bottom ring? Thank you
Darn, it doesn't seem like my SX730's lens tip barrel thing comes off the same way. I can HEAR the dust/sand/whatever grinding inside when I try twisting it back and forth though. From ONE DAY shooting in heavy dust at a car race!
Great video glad I don't have to deal with these small dusty lenses, for the most part, the cameras I use are inside. Either way, this tutorial was very straight forward and very easy to understand.
Good tutorial and hack. I wish they did that at the factory. Similar dust issue happened on my SX720. Lucky it was under warranty and Canon Australia replaced the whole camera.
Thanks Matt for the video. I pulled my G7X apart to clean from dust/sand from the skirt that covers the lens. All went good but when I put the hood back on it did not stay in place. It will fall off freely. Any comments or suggestions for that or am I going to a camera repair shop?
+Andrew Ong drill A pilot hole with the smallest one you can find. Brand new preferably. Then follow it up with one large enough to get a qtip into. Take your time. Let me know how it goes for you!
Thank you so much for this video and the tips!! I just finished cleaning my G7X lens and it is now spotless. Can't wait to use the camera again!! For anyone who is interested, I used a 2mm drill bit to create a small hole and then a 5.5mm drill bit after.
Thank you for your instruction. I have new cam canon G7X and i have afraid. It is save? If I will repair my lens, it is will work good? I clean my lens with compres air and my lens dirty with inside- it is not good idee. Now i need clean my lens in inside Thank you
well... after seeing your lens conditions i don't fell guilty anymore for my G7X MII which is waaaaay better. Nice solution, but i would apply for it really just in bad conditions like yours. Thanks... you open minded me :D
Is there a video on how to fix the lens cover/shutter things. Those little metal pieces fell out on me of course and I have ZERO clue how to put them back together
did you get it fixed? its a pain in the ass for sure.. but if you want i can send you some pictures of how they layer together... if you havent... soak them in some water... sometimes my blades get sticky or dusty and this is your chance to clean them before you put them back.. and there are 2 tiny springs... oooh and get yourself some tiny tweezers if you can.. they help a ton.
I am considering to buy a "pocket" digital camera. I 've already have a Canon DSLR 6D. But it is too heavy for me when travelling, especially the huge lens(24-105 or 70-200mm)...Could you please tell me is G7x good enough to use when I am getting out? (The price of g7x is at the same level of zs110, LX100, and Sony RX100 III, so it is hard for me to make a decision).
why was it not easy for you... i just wonder... I know it was nerve-racking for me. The cool thing is once you have done it... you can clean it super quick from now on.
thats so true, its a wise solution!! actually the most difficult part was removing the black cover (thought it was going to break) Also, despite putting tape to secure the springs, it went off.. difficult to put it back but not impossible. apart from that, piece of cake. keep uploading great content By the way, does your g7x have any background noise? mine has and it sounds like hardware computer noise from inside the camera. its so annoying
THIS is what I absolutely needed, I just wanted to see how to take out the cap bit. Still a bit hesitant with drilling a hole though. Thank you so much for this video. And good luck cycling back to USA. I love China, been there for 5 years, miss the food so much!!! JIANBING for the win!!
glad you like it.. just be careful when you drill the holes.. i have had a few angry people come at me.... but it does work... very well.. Use a brand new bit if possible... they cut into the plastic like butter.
Great tip! What are u using for the wind noise? Been thinking about buying this camera but the dust issue and audio make it hard to decide if it's worth the money. Btw liked and subscribed great video!
+Rise N Shine Its Playtime it's such a great camera in so many ways. This really does solve the dust problem if you are careful. The wind noise can be compensated by taping a foam wind screen to the top.
Is it possible to do this with a Canon Powershot SX160 is? I live in the Caribbean so the sand and dust is a real problem for me when I'm trying to take shots and I do not want to dole out the ridiculous fee that Canon is going to charge me to simply clean my lens. I also definitely do NOT want to replace my camera. She's ole faithful, the first camera I ever got, a birthday present from my mom. I'd rather learn how to maintain it because aside from a little dust in the lens, she works just fine.
Stretch a strip of masking take across the front of the lens to keep the spring mechanism in place so you don't have to "remember" to put your finger over it.
This is crazy! Great video!! Very awesome work. Thank you for sharing!! I don’t know that I am brave enough to drill on mine. I love how it worked & how great you were at giving all the tips!! Having an extra hand would be nice.
I only have one little piece of dirt in mine.. It isn’t causing an issue yet.... but if I need to I will. Thanks again. I had to show it to my husband. Again great video!!
So I did this and while the lens is definitely now clean, I get an error now "lens error, will shut down automatically, restart camera. Any ideas on how to fix it? It works fine still, but the barrel wont fully retract. The camera attempts to retract it three times before it gives up and throws the error
i fixed it, there was a small piece of plastic stuck inside the barrel from drilling. i found it easily by shining a light into the lens and looking around the edges. qtip got it out easily. Thanks for the tips brother.
After checking more online I may have found the problem of the barrel sliding off. Is it some sort of glue that holds it on? I cleaned off the inside of the barrel of dirt and also what was probably the glue to hold it on as well. Any idea of what kind of glue that would be?
can you do a video of you drilling the holes? if you plan on getting another g7x II please? I don't feel comfortable drilling into something I can barely afford lol
On a very different note, if that camera stops working and it can not be salvaged in any way , is there a way to use that lens with some kind of adapter on a mirrorless ( lens- changing ) Sony/ Canon / Olympus camera ? Just for experiment ?
Thanks for posting this video. You were quite resourceful, and adventurous, in finding a way to get dust off the lens, but this doesn't work for dust on the sensor, right? ... I was about to order a G7Xii when I saw another video on how to attach a MAG filter to stop the dust from getting in the lens housing in the fist place. And then I thought, "$700 for a compact camera designed to go in your pocket or your bag where dust and lint collect can't handle that dust? No way!" I opted to get a used S110 instead for my second, carry-always camera. The S110 I got was stated to have no dust, but it does! I guess it is on the sensor, 6 visible spots, one visible with no image enhancement at all. I'm trying to return it now, but Canon's whole compact line-up seems to have this fatal flaw. Is there a practical way to use these cameras while keeping all dust out? I don't like the Sony RX-100, but a 1-inch compact seems ideal as a second camera.
Hi.. I am in big troble and i need some help and i hope you can tell me something about it. I put my camera and lens inside the water and then some drops go inside my lens, so how i can clean it??? Thanks.
+Lost LeBlanc hey man! Pleasure to get a comment from you! Love your channel. If you do this hack just take your time. It works great and might safe your g7x for a while. I literally open it up now every month or so and suck out the dust. Makes it serviceable. You can see a difference when you do. Tell your friends about it. I'm sure we all have the same issue.
I`m taking photos and videos with my G7X Mark II and there's a small black stain on every photo and video I take. Do you think that it may be dust? I tried to talk with Canon but they have a terrible support here in Brazil. I'm thinking about trying the thing you did but I'm afraid that's not gonna solve my problem. I hope you can help me with your knowledge. Thank you for your videos!
you should be able to see any dust by shining a light into the lens and looking in... if you cannot see it.. then probably is not your problem.. let me know what happens.
Did you drill it by just constantly rotating the bit against the surface by hand or used a dremel / drilling machine ? I am guessing by hand else you would have mentioned and the speed of the machine might just shake things up the wrong way IMO
+Kumar Gaurav I used a dremel to drill a very small pilot hole on one side. Then hand drill it. But the other hole I just did all by hand. You're right. I tried to not vibrate anything too much.
+Vlog Epicness nope. But it does accumulate like it has in the past. But now all I have to do is pull the sleeve off and suck it out. Then it's good as new
let me know.. just make sure you go VERY slo drilling and use a fresh drill bit. it should chew thru the plastic easy just using your hand... take your time.... and you should not have a problem.
great! just take your time... and dont push the drill bit in... i have had a couple people angry cause they were too aggressive at the drilling.. but i have three cameras i did this too.. and they are all serviceable now.
You lost me at drill bit.
Hahah. Trust me it works
Nothing to fear. I used a real drill with the two bits (no patience since birth), working slooowly, while my Lovely Assistant vacuumed. Reminds me of the old joke: No one ever needs a drill bit... What you need is a hole

Very happy to help! You have a new life for that camera now... :) JaYoe and Keep Posting! Say hi to the chickens for me.
How did you fix the lens cover? Mine doesn’t seem to function anymore after the fix

why doesn't canon see this video and start drilling holes before they sell it ffs lol
Right! They should have a service port premodern on them. But I guess a new camera sale is more important to them.
Marketing strategy
Given the problems I have with Canon I'm loathe to buy another Canon.
Then nobody would go to their service center.. Everybody will be able to do that with earbuds at home.. & they will not be able to rob people..

Thank you for your instruction. I have new cam canon G7X and i have afraid. It is save? If I will repair my lens, it is will work good? I clean my lens with compres air and my lens dirty with inside- it is not good idee. Now i need clean my lens in inside Thank you
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you for the help. We'll be trying this and letting you know how it goes!
well... after seeing your lens conditions i don't fell guilty anymore for my G7X MII which is waaaaay better. Nice solution, but i would apply for it really just in bad conditions like yours. Thanks... you open minded me :D
New genre for you... you did a great job! Loved the presentation :)
I don’t know how to make a hole with my hands!! It’s taking too long 😢 any tips?
Thanks, G7X Mark 2 is off of my list. You would think Canon should know how to design a dust proof camera at $700 price range?
would this trick works also for Canon SX739 HS?. Tried to pull the external cover out but it looks to be hard, so I stop.
Forgot to give you me email. Mcgalat@gmail.com
Shot you an email!
I am considering to buy a "pocket" digital camera. I 've already have a Canon DSLR 6D. But it is too heavy for me when travelling, especially the huge lens(24-105 or 70-200mm)...Could you please tell me is G7x good enough to use when I am getting out? (The price of g7x is at the same level of zs110, LX100, and Sony RX100 III, so it is hard for me to make a decision).
i love this camera... really.. for sliding in your pocket.. the quality is great.
You saved my camera. Not easy to do but with patience it has been done. Thank you for the tip
why was it not easy for you... i just wonder... I know it was nerve-racking for me. The cool thing is once you have done it... you can clean it super quick from now on.
thats so true, its a wise solution!!
actually the most difficult part was removing the black cover (thought it was going to break) Also, despite putting tape to secure the springs, it went off.. difficult to put it back but not impossible. apart from that, piece of cake. keep uploading great content
By the way, does your g7x have any background noise? mine has and it sounds like hardware computer noise from inside the camera. its so annoying
THIS is what I absolutely needed, I just wanted to see how to take out the cap bit. Still a bit hesitant with drilling a hole though. Thank you so much for this video. And good luck cycling back to USA. I love China, been there for 5 years, miss the food so much!!! JIANBING for the win!!
awesome! just pull 30% harder than too much.. haha.. and it will pop out no problem..
I would need this in the long run of using my own g7x mark ii. Thanks a lot I got through your video from Sean Farrell who shared your video.
Thanks heaps for this hack! It's something I've information that I've been looking around for ages for. Cheers! :)
glad you like it.. just be careful when you drill the holes.. i have had a few angry people come at me.... but it does work...
Yup. That works too. Just pulling the tape off sometimes pulls the fins off too.
This is crazy! Great video!! Very awesome work. Thank you for sharing!! I don’t know that I am brave enough to drill on mine. I love how it worked & how great you were at giving all the tips!! Having an extra hand would be nice.
Yea. Some help would have been ok. But you can do it. Just take your time. It really extends the life of your camera
It worked very well. Thanks, man! 😊
great!
which glue or product do you use to glue the first ring that was removed?
After checking more online I may have found the problem of the barrel sliding off. Is it some sort of glue that holds it on? I cleaned off the inside of the barrel of dirt and also what was probably the glue to hold it on as well. Any idea of what kind of glue that would be?
Hi thanks
I just do it, whole procedure is easy and affective You just save my camera.
very happy to help!
Outstanding! Burning Man definitely infused my lens with a healthy dose of dust. I may look into doing this.. Thanks for the info JaYoe!
Oh cool I'm gonna go do this right now 🤗🤗🤗🤗 thanks for the tip ..... I love this camera it's so amazing 🤗🤗🤗
great.. let me know how it goes.
can you do a video of you drilling the holes? if you plan on getting another g7x II please? I don't feel comfortable drilling into something I can barely afford lol
How about humid environments? Would moisture be able to get in there also?
i have had this this way for a while... no problems.
I don't like the Sony RX-100, but a 1-inch compact seems ideal as a second camera.
the sensor is buried too deep... i think you would be screwed.. but so far most of the dust sticks in that middle area...
THANK YOU FOR THIS TIP!!!! So useful!!
I like the end result, but damn the drill bit spooks me!
Hi.. I am in big troble and i need some help and i hope you can tell me something about it. I put my camera and lens inside the water and then some drops go inside my lens, so how i can clean it???
Thanks.
Appreciate this!
Already done it to mine too, lenses are clean now finally!
great!
This video needs filmed with the canon g7x 😂 the quality is low but that hack is great!
One question. Since you have the whole in your camera does the camera easily get dust inside?
I`m taking photos and videos with my G7X Mark II and there's a small black stain on every photo and video I take. Do you think that it may be dust? I tried to talk with Canon but they have a terrible support here in Brazil.
I'm thinking about trying the thing you did but I'm afraid that's not gonna solve my problem. I hope you can help me with your knowledge. Thank you for your videos!
you should be able to see any dust by shining a light into the lens and looking in... if you cannot see it.. then probably is not your problem.. let me know what happens.
hello is it also possible with g5x? the lens is the same?
Would this work if your camera is foggy please respond asap
You saved my Canon! Thanks man. Canon would replaced without paying 400.- dollars simple trick.
WOO HOO! thats what i love to hear. glad it worked for you. share it with any of your friends that might be able to use it.
Does this also work for the first g7x (so not the mark II?)
i dont know.. i have not seen the mark 1 to try it... but i think it might be similar.
Is this works on Canon PowerShot G15?
What if the dust is deeper inside, not on the first lens?? :/ Panasonic FZ82
take to repair shop
Have you noticed more dust than usual after drilling the holes?
+Vlog Epicness nope. But it does accumulate like it has in the past. But now all I have to do is pull the sleeve off and suck it out. Then it's good as new
I guess you could cover the holes with a sticky tape before assembling the cam back?
@@DimaInsany tips on what kind of tape?
Thank you mate. Great info. Cheers Geoff
Awesome! hope it extends the life of your camera
I just bought my wife a G7XII.
Jeez I hope she doesn't get dust inside the lens.
:/
well if it does.. you know how to get it out.. its a great camera.
Would this work in the rx100 m7?
Will this work on a more basic model? Canon sx730hs OMG I CAN'T DRILL INTO MY CAMERA HOLY CRAP
so when all it's done and you want to put the steel cover back, is there any sign if the cover shut properly? like click sound or something??
no.... you dont hear anything... but you can feel it when it is all the way down again...
thank you brother..hope it'll works on me...
let me know.. just make sure you go VERY slo drilling and use a fresh drill bit. it should chew thru the plastic easy just using your hand... take your time.... and you should not have a problem.
hei bro, how to make microphone hole in canon g7x mark ii i think is more useful :)
Can I use a blow dryer instead ???
vacuum works better that blowing... ive found...
Will this work for Samsung camera too?
It is the same with G5x mark i?
this was a great video. thanks for sharing!
U are a life saver !! Thank you!
great! just take your time... and dont push the drill bit in... i have had a couple people angry cause they were too aggressive at the drilling.. but i have three cameras i did this too.. and they are all serviceable now.
