    Such a helpful video, thank you very much Alison. Hearing the two violins one after the other with no time break is really effective, the difference in tone is immediately apparent. This has helped me decide to fork out a bit more as my son upgrades from a 1/2 to 3/4 size.

    To my ears, the 1400 actually sounded better. I have a Stentor II (1500) and it plays well but sounds very similar to yours, which to me is a bit less mellow and more harsh.

      What I heard was the same as Alison, as the Stentor 1500 a nicer tone, maybe richer and deeper. At first it appeared a bit larger. I’ve decided to order the Stentor 2.

    The Stentor lol spoke to me as you were playing it. I agree, very smooth, lovely tone, and you do it justice, as you play it so well! I feel like I owe you a tip! I am seriously looking for a violin with a deep, dark sound similar to a viola. Thank you kindly Alison.

    I just wanted to thank you for this informative video. :) I've been thinking of getting the Stentor II or a Mendini MV300 and after lots if research, including several of your review videos, I've made my decision to go for the Stentor II, and I had the opportunity to try both, and iI was amazed at the quality of the sound of the Stentor II , and it's beautiful; I just love it!! For now, I'm just saving up for this beautiful violin. :)

    Audibly, the Stentor I sounds "whiny" or "nasal" while the Stentor II sounds more full. An obvious resonance difference but I can't tell from looking at them.

    Hi thank you for your review videos, they are very helpful!!!! I just purchased a Stentor 1500 for my daughter. Do you think it is a good idea to replace the original strings with Dominant strings? Will there be a big difference? This is her first year in violin classes. Thanks for your time.

    Do you suggest using the bow that comes with the Stentor or should I invest in a better quality bow?

  • @Knallbart
    @Knallbart 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Ooh it was really helpful that you sort of "melded" them together like that. I thought the 2nd one sounded a little bit more "nasal" if that makes sense, than the first one. I don't think that would have come across unless you melded them together like that. So cool! I NEVER hear the difference 😂😂

    The Stentor I actually sounded better to my ears when you played it versus the Stentor II. I have a Stentor I and love it :-) It's a good quality beginner violin. I put on Dominant strings and purchased a nice carbon fiber bow, which enhanced the sound quality greatly. Thanks for the very helpful videos!

    I love my Stentor 1500 after 2 mos. it is well made with beautiful spruce and maple fine grain wood. A richer, deeper tone after playing on it 2-3 hrs a day. The wood has opened up since first bought. It’s not as tight or tense, but a lovely deep tone. I love it!

    Hi Alison, I am looking to take up violin during the summer as I used to play the cello up to grade 6 then quit but I miss playing a stringed instrument so I thought I may as well start. Do you think the Stentor II would be a good choice because I’m not a complete beginner and have the bowing technique etc down but theres just so much choice when it comes to violins I don’t know where to start!!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

      I think it will be fine to get you started without sounding terrible and scratchy. Just depends if you want to future proof a bit more as you will want to upgrade soon if you stick with the violin.

      You're a sweetheart for answering!! I ordered a Cremona that was pictured showing a defined long grain beautiful spruce top. The instrument I received had a what appeared to be a maple top with grain lines created by staining. I was soooooo disappointed and immediately returned it! This is the purpose behind my original comment; your reviews are all great. You can't think of everything we are questioning. Merry Christmas!

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Cremonas are cheap and therefore may not be as good anyway, as they are very much an entry, entry level violin for someone who has never played before and just 'needs' something to play on.
      If you want something that looks nice and plays well with all the wood etc etc, then you are looking at $1,000 PLUS. Anything under that is just something to have to learn and play the music. Thats all.
      This is why at this level, the wood, back and spruce etc is totally irrelevant as it wont make a blind bit of difference - even though brands say it does.
      I know its a minefield, but you have to be realistic to what you are buying.
      I can recommend the CVN500 with Dominant strings (you need to buy and replace them separately) and you will be good to go for a long time.
      Out of all the violins I have reviewed, I never once looked at the wood or even cared what it was and looked like as its all in the sound with these violins.
      Anyway, enough waffle lol.
      Marry Christmas and have a good NY, Alison

    Alison, thank you SO much for this review. I am a violinist precisely as your described: played as a child, quit after my Grade 3 Exams and am looking to take it up again after more than 11 years, but just for fun.
    I appreciate your review, and from what you have said, it appears with the Stentor violins that you do get what you are willing to pay for.
    I picked up the slightly more mellow tone in the Stentor 1400 when compared with the Stentor 2, but only when listening through my ear phones. I think that for the purposes which I intend to use the violin for, it wouldn't matter, though I think practicing with the Stentor 1500 might be slightly kinder on my ears, especially given the issues I, personally, have with perfecting my craft.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Adidas Love I would personally get the II over the I. There isnt 'much' in it, but enough to warrant spending the extra cash in my opinion. If you do get the II and can afford to add some Dominants, then you really will be rocking and rollin lol! :)

    • @Ad-Lo

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mole Cakes Hard to say as it depends on so many factors. I could say the CVN800 as its the top of the line, but its also not cheap. Do you need something that advanced etc etc? Budget does come into it, plus what your needs and wants are.
      I would say though as a beginner you could go for either of the following:
      1. Stentor II
      2. CVN300 WITH Dominant strings
      3. MV500 WITH Dominant strings - which would be my favourite out of the 3, but if you don't get the strings, don't bother.

    Have you tried the Revelle 500QX? I played one today and found it t o be much warmer than my current no name violin. The Revelle goes for $899 (just violin) which is obviously much more expensive than the Stentor. I haven't played a Stentor and don't know if the Revelle is that much better if at all.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

      Mathilde Hauge Depends on how much out of tune the violin is. If its only out a little, the fine tuners might do it. If not, you will have to use the pegs little by little.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor

      If you want some nice tones on the high and low pitches, you'll need to be spending a lot more than the cost of these violins as they are just student ones. Student ones are just violin that work well - you wont get 'nice tones' from them sadly, but these are all ok if you just want a decent sounding violin that it set up reasonably well.

    As you hold the two instruments up the Stentor I seems like it's smaller all around, including the scale length than the Stentor II. This of course would affect the tone of the instruments. If this is true, the Stentor I would tend to have a little sharper & crisper tone, while the Stentor II would have a little more mellow & richer tone. You didn't play the Stentor II, so we can't really tell if this is so. Thanks for your video.

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend you go to a dealer and try a bunch out. Since you are on grade 4, student violins wont cut it now so you need to get a proper one, not a branded one.

    • @erindyson5194
      @erindyson5194 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Online Piano and Violin Tutor What do you mean proper sorry? Also how much would I be looking at spending?

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A proper violin is not one that is mass manufactured by a brand. I dont know what your budget is, but is you are doing grades and expect or want to do well in them, you need to be spending around the £800 mark I guess - ROUGHLY. That will also mean you wont have to upgrade until you get to the advanced grades.
      You cant expect to learn more advanced bow techniques and go higher up in the positions with a poor violin that will not give you the tone and scope you need to do these advanced techniques on. I know that sounds like a lot of money, but its the same investment every musician makes if they want to advance and you cant have one without the other. There is not point wasting all your time, hours and effort practising and money on lessons if you cannot get better because the violin wont let you. It also may seem like any violin will be fine, but it wont as they dont have the tone or set up or ability that matches what you will be doing.

      @erindyson5194 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @TheOnlineViolinTutor
      @TheOnlineViolinTutor  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well in my opinion no as those are branded violins. Assuming you are in the UK you can’t get cecilio violins anyway.
      It’s up to you of course, but my professional advice is go to a violin dealer and get an antique violin.
      Your teacher should have some advice for you on this so it might be best to ask them and do what they say.

I originally had the Mendini 4/4 MV200 but went ahead and did a wee upgrade since you gave a great review on the SII. I purchased a Dominant/Pirasto string set to swap out just today.

      I really hope I chose the correct set. I know they won't make a HUGE difference but as a beginner I'd like to get all the boost I can to encourage me to keep practicing. Less scratch, smoother...etc. Even went the extra mile and bought the Pirastro goldflex rosin :)
      If for some reason anyone thinks that the string set is wrong for the SII please chime in :) Would rather not waste the $!
      Also, you didn't mention anything about the quality of the bow (that I remember). It seems fine but I wasn't sure if I should look for an upgrade or if the original in the case will do just fine for a beginner student.

    Hello, I really want to buy Cecilio CVN-500 because I want a good violin from the start but it's not available in my country neither does the amazon link ship to my country. A Stentor II is available though, but I don't want a violin that's only good for a beginner, any advice? ):

    A good comparison would be to play both instruments with the same set of strings (T. Dominant, for example)

      I think I either made something up, or a piece from one of my own song books.
