I tend to use rosettes style succulents in arrangements in containers. I tend to use lots of greens and yellow greens, analogous color schemes. I love agaves, but seldom use them.
I am always learning from your videos. Most of my succulents are planted in arrangements. I tend to use odd numbers 3,5 etc and if possible different textures. I like the thriller, filler, spiller method. I usually make small arrangements with just 3 or 5 plants as gifts. So far I’ve gotten positive responses.
Hopefully I get to this point over time! I took three succulents I liked and just put them in a terracotta pot. It’s my first succulent arrangement in good rock gritty soil mix. I’m excited and nervous to see how it goes and learn from it all!
I really like your videos When arranging a succulent do not have to take into account their sleeping period and the conditions for their growth, such as sun, water, etc. Which succulents can be grown together Thanks
Just getting ready to pot up some babies I bought and a few older plants that need a new pot/home. I'll try to use some of this info. to help make my arrangements prettier. Please cover how to use these tips PLUS take into acct. their watering/light needs at the same time. Seems like a puzzle or a riddle and the answers are still lost to me overall. But I'm learning, thanks to you and these videos. Thanks for taking the time to help beginners like me learn how to help our plants thrive instead of just survive us.
Some great tips. I prefer split complementary colour schemes, where you use the two analogous colours instead of the one opposite colour (eg green + red-orange + red-purple). It's not as garish as pure complementaries, and it gives three colours to work with.
Loved this video! I tend to have varied textures in arrangements . I’m looking forward to trying some of the different color ways you demonstrated. I really liked the tranquil palette of the mono chromatic scheme. 🌱👍
I love your channel! I just started watching you, and you have great tips! I wish you would do more demonstrations! That would make your channel so fun (:
What about the size/spacing? How much room should be left for plants to grow? Or should they be spaced close together without worrying about longer-term growth?
You can plant them super close together. It will cause them to grow more slowly. But giving them an inch or two between the plants will allow them to grow larger faster. Depends on how you want it to look now 😊
Can you grow the colorful succulents indoors? I live in OH so the weather gets really cold and my succulents have to be inside or on the porch or outside only in summer
I am very new to succulents, and did an arrangement with different leaf shapes and complimentary colours and an odd number of plants. I know what they all are but one, and you showed it in this video. What is the first green one with red tips? The one with narrow leaves? It’s my centre piece, despite being short, as mine all are, not much variety at stores where I am.
In the all green arrangement I show first, the plants are: Senecio barbertonicus Sedum 'Burrito' Haworthia retusa Crassula rupestris If that's not the right arrangement let me know 😊
@@Succulentsandsunshine Thanks so much for replying, and sorry for not being clear! It is the first plant shown in the filler category, shown at 2:45 in the video (likely an echevaria as all the other mixed succulents I got at the same place/time are echevaria. Your video's have really helped me out a lot, I'm in Canada and don't have a nursery like you do that I can go to for help. So I need to rely on video's like these, as my plants are from a hardware store and I impulse bought them to rescue them from lack of light and over watering, and they were just labeled mixed succulents. But, I learned all about one, Perle Von Nurnburg from your recent video (and bought a full spectrum grow light in preparation for winter as a result!) And the black prince, and frills are so distinctive they were easy to find. But green with red tips brought up so many options and none were right. I'd about given up until I watched this video, while binge watching your channel :)
The varieties in 1:11-1:13 are: Blue Chalk Sticks: www.succulentsandsunshine.com/types-of-succulents/senecio-serpens-blue-chalksticks/?.com& Jade plant: worldofsucculents.com/?scientific-names=crassula-ovata Paddle plant: www.succulentsandsunshine.com/types-of-succulents/kalanchoe-luciae/?.com&
Hi there. Can u recommend me succulents that looks good on a fairytale inspired dish garden. I already have jade plant and mini rossettes. And also is watering green tea good for succulents growth? Thanks for the video! Keep it coming.
Laura from Garden Answer has a TON of fairy succulent gardens. She is one of my favorite youtubers, and she's the reason I started loving plants! th-cam.com/video/1yXIIzxS6co/w-d-xo.html
Thrillers, fillers and spillers add definite drama to an arrangement. I'm limited to the number of succulent varieties I can purchase locally, but try my best to put complementary colours and contrasting shapes together. I love using coloured glass containers on my window ledge and attempt to have an appropriate number of plants depending on pot size.
Cassidy, I try to take into consideration the amount of water and sun with succulents I'm grouping together. I can't always remember how much each one needs? Bobbie
That's great! Grouping by water and sun needs will help you keep them happy. On our Types of Succulents page, we've got sun and watering information on a variety of succulents, with more added weekly. That would be a great place to start: www.succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-typesofsuccs
I have a lot of single pots of succulents I’m worried if I put in too many in one pot they might die. With your videos I am learning so much tho thanks you 🙂
There are some beautiful red succulents, especially Sempervivums: mountaincrestgardens.com/sempervivum-pacific-red-tide/?aff=2 Sedum nussbaumerianum "Coppertone" would add some nice yellow. www.succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-coppertone Aeonium arboreum ‘Zwartkopf’ could add a dark color: succulentsbox.com/products/black-rose-aeonium-arboreum-zwartkop-black-beauty-2-or-4?variant=45851369225/?aff=3 as well as Echeveria 'Black Knight'" succulentsbox.com/products/echeveria-black-prince-black-hens-and-chicks-2-inch-pot?variant=160312360969/?aff=3 You could also incorporate the black and yellow through a pot or top dressing choice.
Question: what does it mean when a kalanchoe tomentosa's new leaves look like they are balding? My plant's newer leaves are way less fuzzy than the original ones and I can't figure out why. Thanks in advance.
This whole video is ruined by the black bar across the base. It hides the beautiful plants you are describing. I think we all know how to exit full screen and for those who don't they will soon learn.
Love "thriller, filler, spiller". It's so descriptive and memorable. Excellent video.
Thank you!

I think that's the hardest part, sometimes! :)

I believe the one in question is Echeveria pulidonis 😊
What is the name of the plant with the tiny green leaves that have red tips at 1:06? I have one and I’ve been trying to figure out it’s name
Sedum rupestre 'Angelina' :)
Succulents and Sunshine Thank you so much!
Can you please talk about top dressing on succulents
That's a great video idea, thanks! :) In the meantime, here's a post about top dressing:

Can you ID the varieties used in the arrangement @ 1:11-1:13 as well as the "thriller" @ 2:30-2:35?

Can I use cactuses and succulents together in one arrangement?
Yep, if you use ones that have similar watering needs :)
Take a look at this FAQ for more info:
succulentsandsunshine.com/yt-wateringarrangementsfaq
I try to make my arrangements taking into account colour, fillers, spillers, texture etc, but also "dormancy".
Great thinking!
So does this mean you don't have to have ones together that have the same kind of care ?
It's best (especially for beginners) if you have an arrangement of succulents that requires the same water and light.
What type of soil do you use in your arrangements?
We love the Bonsai Jack gritty mix. You can get it through our affiliate link here:
