    "Oxygen" is the vehicle's name, the fuel used in the rocket engine is hydrogen peroxide, a chemical compound with the formula H₂O₂

    I saw Slammin' Sammy do it in 3.5 seconds @ 350 mph in the 1980's at the Hollywood Speedway in Florida... I missed his first run and he had parachute trouble on his third run that day. I stood at the 1000 foot mark up close to the chain link fence... He ran on Hydrogen Peroxide and his rig had no body, it just looked like a big go kart with ball shaped H2O2 tanks and thrusters... I don't think anybody's had the nerve to produce one of these rocket cars since Sammy... They sold the track soon after that and the developers built condos...!

    Wondering why nobody is trying to break thous records with all the new technology we have nowadays. There is enough crazy peope out there who would do it. Are the people not interested anymore in such things like in the 70s or 80s?????

    • @aedsy
      @aedsy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think these oxygen rocket cars are widely banned due to the very dangerous speeds they are capable of. It would be interesting to see what could be achieved now. I think if these records are to be broken it may be more likely that the car that does it is unmanned, as in either remote or computer controlled, in order to reduce the risk to human life.

    Yeah your right Jbe thinking back I wondered why I put that and what I was trying to get at...I think I was thinking more about the moisture content in the air...if the air is more humid would that create more drag ?? In other words how does humidity affect drag !!....comparing the above run which was in England to Kitty O'Neils which was in the Nevada Desert !!

    And to think the NHRA tries to claim Top Fuel dragsters as the fastest accelerating vehicles on the planet. Pshhh GTFO, they just cant stand it that rocket dragsters and jet dragsters are faster. They want their T/F dragsters to be fastest so they banned rocket cars and they limit the jet cars to be slower, I wish these cars were covered more so people would know the truth

  • @jbe72493
    @jbe72493 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @appliedforcellc What? This is a standing 1/4 mile! Can you not see that? There is no reason at all to doubt the passes these cars made. It really isnt hard to fathom that a fucking rocket car would be faster than any piston engine. Look at the Bloodhound SSC, no piston engine streamliner will ever come close. The power or should I say thrust-to-weight ratio and thrust-to-drag ratio of a rocket vehicle is far greater than any piston engine could achieve......

  • @jbe72493
    @jbe72493 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @louswire As said above, its not mislabelled. The cars name is Oxygen, and btw youre the one that appears to have mislabelled, Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2 not HO2, HO2 would Hydroperoxyl radical

  • @jbe72493
    @jbe72493 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @rael1999 The air is thicker at lower altitude, therefore drag would increase, not be lower. Why do you think jet aircraft are faster at higher altitudes? Duhh Piston engined cars make more power at lower altitudes but aircraft are negatively affected, and so would a rocket car. They dont need to intake air so the thicker air would cause more resistance, ie MORE DRAG

    I heard some other numbers back in the '80s. I was told that the percentage of the solution used was 90%, and the stuff I use on my skin is .01% I believe. And what I was told was that if the 90% solution was spilled on your skin, it would burn a hole in your skin through dissolution, not "burst into flame". Let's not overstate our claims here. I have read about some of Hitler's experiments with this type of propulsion, and the associated disasters suffered by some of his test pilots. Funny!

    @IamPorterhouse Those were standing start runs with E.T.'s and trap speeds- not "flying" runs. I know Ky and I believe him.

    It's not mislabelled. The car's name was OXYGEN. Insightful info, nontheless..

  • @louswire
    @louswire 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    this vid is miss labeled, the car is propelled by hydrogen per oxide, the HO2 is pumped (at high pressure) into a catalyst chamber where it breaks down into water and free oxygen... then it's out the rockett nozzle for incredible thrust. the HO2 that you put on a cut is 0.05% solution... the stuff used in this (and other cars) was 99.9% solution, so powerful that if you spilled some on exposed skin... the skin would burst into flame! . . . nasty stuff!

    Sammy's Rocket cars were incredible to see. Although on the whole Sammy use to race just one car at a time, I was there in the early eighties when both Oxygen and Vanishing point ran side by side. Alan Herridge who use to run The Gladiator Funny Car challenged Sammy to a side by side race. Miller Piloting Vanishing Point and 'Bootsie' Piloting Qxygen. Incredibly the Bootsie took the win in 4.1 secs to Sammy's fractionally slower 4.2 secs. Don't think it's ever been repeated.

  • @louswire
    @louswire 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The demise of these particular rockets, was caused by the end of their fuel supply. Hydrogen peroxide is a nasty chemical at the concentrations they ran. One of th two supply companies either ceased production, or went out of business. A truely 'green' car the 80 lb motor, catalyzed the hydrogenperoxide changing it to high preasure steam, and free oxygen.
