In Florida, we take the ditch offline after Easter, when snowbirds go home and flows are lowest. At our plants close to the beach, we spend most of the downtime removing sand that got washed down the drain in hi-rise condos, where washing machines and showers used by beachgoers get transported to the treatment plant. Sometimes need a bobcat to remove all that sand!

Thanks Bruce for sharing, very useful to see how much grit/debris collected in about 6 years.
May I ask it this a crude sewage oxidation ditches.

Bruce, how bad is the stench? Tell me this operation isn't taking place during the summer when the smells must be worse.

Summer time is low flow, optimal time to perform this operation. The oxidation ditch system produces very little odor. Honestly, the smell was very earthy and non-offensive.

So Bruce by taking your ditch offline what was your flow pattern at your plant? Do you have another form of primary treatment as well?

We have two parallel treatment systems. The other is a trickling filter system which meets all permit limitations.
