Why don't you just invest in a backup generator? It's completely automatic and if installed correctly, you never notice the change. They are powerful enough to run your entire property.

    Mike,
You are doing what I did for years, putting a band-aid on the power outage problem instead of solving the problem. I live forty miles north of Phoenix,AZ. My power goes out up to nine times a year, mostly in the summer during one of our monsoon storms. Arizona in the summer with no air conditioning, eeeek!
I did the generator thing; it sucked- go out in a pounding thunderstorm and start the generator.
Finally, seven years ago I had a Kohler 20Kw generator installed. I picked the Kohler over the Generac because the housing on the Kholer was better for keeping packrats out of the unit. Now, thirty seconds after my power goes “poof” my generator automatically powers the house; lights, tv, ac and all. Best household decision I’ve ever made.

How peaceful it was in the forest. Can you imagine the US when it was just the Indians living here. Virgin forests from the East to the West. I hope you get a few good saw logs as you clean up your forest at home. Nature can be destructive at times. Have you been keeping up w Yellowstone Park? Big crack just happened a few days ago. Today's video was awesome, thanks Mike.👍🚜🙏❤🇺🇸🇺🇸

I’ll bet that you’ll want to find a trustworthy person/family to “check” on your property occasionally. I’m sure there’s times when you’ll want to see for yourself or have that change of pace getaway, still a back plan is quite valuable. Trustworthy is the key!

I have a couple of the same Honda generators you have. I will say they are the best generators I have ever purchased. I owned an electrical contractor business and bought these 20 to 25 years ago and they still start on the first pull every time. They are the best.

Love the portability of the Honda. That said IMO you need a whole home system. Home Depot right now has the Guardian 16,000-Watt Air-Cooled Whole House Generator with Wi-Fi and 200-Amp Transfer Switch LP version for $4247 plus installation. Because you said you do not have NG or LP you would have to spend the $$$ for a LP tank but these units are "Outstanding". About 15 seconds after the power goes out these fire up and the whole home os powered. For a few hundred dollars more you can go to a 18,000-Watt. We installed a 20Kw 8 years ago....one of the best investments we have ever made.

Mike, that Honda is a great generator. I’ve used one for many years when camping and to keep the freezer and refrigerator going when power goes out….BUT, I live in a somewhat rural area like you and I’m in Michigan, 500 miles north of you. I invested in a natural gas whole house generator. 11000 kw is plenty to start my furnace and run my well pump along with lights, washer, dryer, hot water heater, etc. It was not cheap but I have zero regrets. I highly recommend one. Thank you for so many years of bringing us along with you and your family. 🇺🇸

Those Honda suitcase generators are very handy. Always a great starting and running unit. They make a external tank that extends run time to 12hrs and full power.
I recommend a propane generac for the cabin that charges a battery bank with inverter. That’s how I run my off grib cabin. The generator charges my batteries in 2 hours of run time.

Great video Mike, happy that you got down to W VA and all is well there too. Definitely need to get a set up for your whole house electrical system and work n play shop to keep everyone safe and secure. Those portable generators are great fo on the go demands and a small camp situation and emergency short term for home freezer and refrigerator set up. I really liked mine for taking to a part of the property to use the electrical tools to do any building or repairs. Really enjoyed the video and the game camera footage and that your trees were still standing proud. Stay safe and keep up the good work. Fred. Hello Hunter, hope you're doing great!!

Hi Mike, been watching your channel since the beginning while living in CA. We moved to a small town in southeastern Texas three years ago and bought 16 acres' of land and built our barndo and barn. We are semi off grid, with water well and propane, grid power for now will do solar in a couple of years. Since we are out in the country and experienced the deep freeze in 2021 we decided to install a 24K Generic generator running off a 500 gallon propane tank, plenty of power for a 200amp service.

Love my Honda generators, I have had my eu2200i for several years and discovered an oil leak. Apparently a common problem with this generator. Had it worked on by a respected small engine shop but not Honda certified, leak was not fixed but engine still runs and generates, only leaking oil when engine is turned off. Used it for refrigerators and freezers and remote jobs requiring power tools. Take care of it and it will take care of you. Love the channel flip in fla

In Indiana we had an ice storm that took power out for 7 days. My brother called a store and reserved their last 3 generators that he asked me to go get. Long drive under really bad conditions. He and his father in law kept the 2 5000 watt generators. I ended up with the 3500 watt Coleman. I found out after 6 days it was not enough to run 1 upright freezer. Returned it and got my money back.
I was tempted by the Stihl saw but I did not want another battery platform. I bought the 12 volt 6 inch Milwaukee chain saw. i really like it. Now they have an 18 volt 8 inch.

    • @dennisgrandy3075
      @dennisgrandy3075 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Sounds like a defective generator. A 3500 watt generator should be putting out about 29 amps of 120v power, more than enough to run a household size freezer.

Mike, my kids got me the GTA 26 for Xmas and it has been great for pruning trees and cutting up limbs to burn. I have the Honda 2200 generator too and it has been flawless. We tend to get ice storms here in NC which can take our power lines. The Honda is perfect for keeping the fringes and freezers cold, plus other small devices. I have a 2019 F150 with the 36 gal tank. It’s nice when you find cheaper gas and can fill up. Lover your channel.. take care.

  • @dennisgrandy3075

A good way to keep track of where you put your cameras is to use a hand held GPS. Simply set a waypoint at each camera location and you will be able to walk straight to them from anywhere in the woods and you won't be attracting the attention of trail cam thieves with orange marking tape. I have used a GPS to find property line markers just by using the angle and distance coordinates from the property survey description.

    Mike,
The extended run kits (external fuel tank) for those Hondas are very nice, and not that expensive. Nice to not have to fill up every 4-10 hrs depending on your load.
Also installing an hour meter is nice, that way when you only use it a few hours at a time you can keep track.
Regarding the camp, we’ve had good luck wiring ours with everything 120v, and running it off the main inverter and battery bank - using the generator for topping up the batteries. Also this setup allows you to run everything off the generator in case you have battery or inverter issues. I know you were considering 12v lights.

Solar is worth considering. I know you have trees, but you're in the lumber and firwood business. Take a few out and put a few panels up, or just a few on the roof of your cabin. If a 2000 watt generator is going to meet your needs then the solar system you would need is minimal cost, size and effort. I've been powering a whole house and electric cars for 4 years all from solar. Definitely worth looking at.

When grid power comes back on, then the process switches back to normal grid power without loss of power to the house. Whole system cost about $7,000 approximately 10-12 years ago.

We use those generators for work and they are absolutely awesome! They get abused and start on the first pull every time. They will run for 6hrs under a load. It’s like a alarm clock when the generator runs out of gas you know it’s almost time to quit! Great video

I wrote the other day about Honda generator. FYI I bought two with a parallel cable. Might be smart as you could have one at both locations and perhaps take the PA one for longer stays. They run great together as a pair Craig Scott Savannah GA

Mike, you may think about marking those trail cam trees with fluorescent orange tree marking tape. The deer will never notice, but the trespassers will. Just a thought.

No markings no posted signs that just makes people noisy...after this hunting season he'll know what's up

Mike, on those engines that don't have a primer, I find that when you are ready to pull the rope, pull the rope slowly 5 times then give it a hard pull. The slow 5 pulls serves to prime the engine.

A quick tip regarding starting small motors like the Honda, after putting the choke on, give the pull cord 3 or 4 pulls, BEFORE you switch the ignition on. I have owned the Honda 2000 for more than 15 years and it has been trouble free for that time. More to tell if interested.

On that Honda, really any small engine, if you shut the fuel off when you're done using it and let it run until it runs out you avoid issues with the carb/fuel system. Looking forward to the West VA cabin. good vid.

I have had many Honda generators over the years. I have a Honda EU2000i with over a thousand hours on it and still runs like new. I also have a eu2200i, eu6500es, and I do have a harbor freight predator 2000. The predator is a good little unit for the price but its not as quite and I don't expect it to last has long as my Honda's

Interested to hear what size of extension cords and lengths. I’m sure that is something a person should factor in. I always trust your advice.
    Thanks

Good point! Motors can burn up if they don't get proper voltage and current.
Ever notice how many people have to get new appliances after a power outage?

We lived in WA state for a long time before moving to CO....The power dropped a lot......all the time in fact and these little gen sets worked great.. My son has both of them now (we could pair them for more power) but we cycled what needed to be powered and it was awesome...the pellet stove (NEVER AGAIN) the refrigerator and freezer and TV...
