  • New Honda generator issues on first startup even though only using fresh, non-ethanol gas. Likely gummed up carburetor from overseas fuel and sitting in box during shipping. In this video, I clean the jets within the carb and get the Honda running smoothly in a very quick and easy repair session.

I'm glad this is the first video that popped up regarding the same issues my less than three month old generator was/is experiencing.
My situation is a bit different, so I'll describe it a little bit so people can relate to the ways in which these generators are used, and needing the kinds of repairs in your video.
I basically use the generator in a camper van for AC power.
Prior to investing in the generator, I idled the vehicle for hours to use the vehicle's alternator do power a DC to AC inverter, and air conditioning. Also to charge up the solar batteries to keep their state of charge on the high end.
Idling The vehicle wasn't the best fix, but it was making ends meet at the time. However I purchased a 12v DC rooftop AC, which drew between 40 to 60 amps.
I then upgraded the 150amp alternator to 250amp.
At the end of the day, I managed to run the rooftop air conditioner using the vehicle alternator power without creating a deficit on the battery bank.
But this meant that I would have to run the engine each and every time I wanted to run the air conditioner for lengthy periods. which was unacceptable.
I then upgraded the size of the solar battery bank so it could withstand short blips, abuse of the air conditioner without running the vehicle engine.
I wanted to take a second to say that I am glad I invested in the honda generator due to its quality and reliability. i became first-hand aware of the quality. The honda generator is when I thought my backup generator could be from another manufacturer. the very first day I got the generator it over a celebrated itself to overload, and I took it right back and purchase the duplicate honda.
Heading back to my generator situation pertaining to rough idol and surging while running.
A couple of days ago I completed a two hundred hour service which included changing the spark plug, changing the oil, cleaning the spark arrestor and cleaning the air filter. anticipating this would fix the problems as you described in your video.
After the service, the generator ran smoother. However, it appeared not to run ultimately smooth.
There was something still causing its idle to jump around and run with periodic surging. though ultimately, my maintenance created a 75 to 90 percent gain in performance. i suspected it was a cleaning of something but due to my unfamiliarity with the generator engine. I wasn't about to research it to death or explore, because it was the primary source of power for the campervan.
In this respect, a decision was made to buy an additional generator exactly as the same one I had, as a backup generator to have in the event that extended maintenance or repairs were needed on either of the two generators I now have.
Therefore in the event that either one needs a repair or simple periodic maintenance, that unit can be taken offline and replaced with the backup unit during the maintenance.
In contrast, if somebody has a generator for a home. The home based generator can easily be worked on in between uses. However, as in my situation, when a generator is the key operational power component to a camper van, buying a backup unit to replace a unit in need of repair is an ideal way to go.
That way, repairs, such as those in your video, can be done so in a calm in quality manner and not in a hasty, quick sloppy manner to quickly slap it together because of the dependency upon it by the needs on the road, buy a campervan.
I'm glad that other generator owners felt that your repair to the carburetor system resulted in similar successful results.
This gives me confidence to move forward with these repairs to my first generator, which is now in storage, waiting to be performance tweaked.
And in closing, I will add. The 300 hour service on these generators may require extended taking a part of the engine components. So now that I have a backup unit, these extensive repairs can either be done by myself, or buy a service shop.
And in the event, the carburetor is taken to a server sho and perhaps in need of a week or so to get fixed the downtime won't impact the operations of the camberan.
So thanks again for this very detailed and instrumental generator fix for rough idling and operational surging issues.

I got three of these I live in the bush of Alaska one has over 6,000 hours on it The other two about 4500 The biggest thing that goes out on these is the muffler which can be fixed by a cable and a drill pulling the packing out of the muffler they do clog up after a while and make the generator run like shit. Also changing your fuel filter draining your carburetor bowl once in a while helps. As far as the pool starter cords wearing I found using 550 parachute cord doesn't fray like the normal starting cord. You're welcome.

Why not just remove or clean and replace the spark arrester?

wanted to say this is a good and helpful video! my honda had some surging at idle and wanted to die on choke. after 3 years of burning man there was dried playa dust inside the carb. a good cleaning of the bowl, main body, and all jets got things running smoothly again. I didn't use a wire to clean the jets. I used isopropyl alcohol along with compressed air. I didn't have carb cleaner on hand.

I loved the video… but as someone who had an issue with my brand new Honda Goldwing which I ended up having to hire an attorney for them to take back. I can most certainly say, Honda usually makes a good product but good luck getting them to make something right if the product doesn’t turn out good. I’ve had one of these generators for about 9 years (the 2000is) and I’ve only had to do this once in 9 years, it’s been a great little generator.

Hi, could you please tell me what are the engine's RPM for the normal mode and for the Eco Throttle?
    Thanks.

Thanks. The constant focus camera issue was indeed annoying, but since I knew the process, I followed it just fine.

I think I might run a bit of Seafoam through before I tore the carb down, and if I was cleaning gets I'd look at using some carb cleaner / ultrasonic cleaner before I started running wires and compressed air through the jets. Solvent will remove gummed up fuel better than running wires and air through it. I'm going to check out my 3 month old EU2200i as I think it has the same sort of surging issues, but I'll run some cleaner through the fuel (Seafoam also stabilizes the fuel for long term storage to avoid this issue in the future) first.

@@skylerdylan1005 seafoam or any other additive rarely helps. When cleaning a carb always use a small wire threw every orfice and spray out if you what success. Bend a small wire and probe the orfices in the throat that the throttle valve exposes that was the only thing that he didn’t cover but very well done imo.

That generator looks brand new. Did it get clogged from sitting? I’ve ordered a new generator and a propane conversion kit for it.

Well my 2000 ran crappy i replaced all gas changed oil cleaned plug that was nasty oily. I think running fresh premium no ethanol gas made it run way smoother on eco throttle. Anyway no way i take it apart like you did but interesting

That carb had already been removed. Almost impossible without damaging carb or surrounding parts. This is a misleading, incomplete procedure.
