Honestly, if I were Tchaikovsky and I saw this, I would absolutely love what they've done with the song, because although they were quite comical, they still pulled off a very difficult song to do a cappella. Honestly, if you can't laugh at yourself and your own creations, then you can't laugh at anything, and I think he had a sense of humor.
it's insanely amazing!!!! wow... this must be done years ago(looking and the ladies hair style) I still believe that previous generations had a more artistic view on music(or other types of arts)and the performances used to have more quality in them. I think the value of real art used to be more comprehended than now!but please don't attack me for saying that because I know many people disagree with me!
It's amazing that most of you didn't ever heard about the Swingles... As an information for everybody, they were the best a capella group in the 50, 60, and 80 decades... Not just as a singing group, but by their vocal quality !!! You dont have to like the repertoire, but not recognasing vocal quality is a sign of musical ignorance !!!
Come on man...a sign of musical ignorance! That's a bit harsh my brother! I was introduced to the group at the age of 3, by my Dad, who was an avid jazz and classical music lover. The best Acapella and percussion sound out there! By the way I'm in my 60's now!!
It is even more fun when you see them in person! I have gotten to see them twice. I aughed till I hurt! But they do have gorgeous, well trained voices as well.
This is absolutely amazing. The performance is top notch. Voices are well balanced, and one does not outshine the other, yet they they are still incredibly powerful! The only thing I have to criticize is that some parts feel, as if one of the singers is a little out of tune, but it is somewhat negligable! The vocal solo at 1:11 is absolutely stunning, and well composed! 9.5/10! :D
Actually there is a drone portion and that is slightly out of ture. So actually the singer is better then others if you have never noticed that part, because it is there in the music.
@Schamschi: I'm sorry you can't appreciate such an amazing a cappella group. Believe it or not this was actually written sung and recorded before family guy existed, so I can't see why you made such a bizarre reference to (I agree) a rather shitty show. If you listened to the original you might find that they imitate an orchestra bloody well! Their sound is very clean and crisp, and the chords ring perfectly. (continued)
Well everyone has a sense of humor,(hopefully)but if you were to put your heart into a patriotic work about your country, nationalism, and pride, then it would probably be very serious. But you're right, they are good. By the way,Tchaikovsky was a very peculiar person. He had an attitude as if he was the only person to have talent...if in doubt, look up what he said about Johannes Brahm's music and other composers of his time.
It wasn't written with text, but songs with text were derived in composing it, most notably the hymn Spaisi Gospodi and a Russian folk song were used multiple times in the overture.
this is the most amazing group I have ever heard, I first heard them in the 80's. I love that they sing classical music. Its complex enough with instruments. They are extremely talented.
A.ma.zing. I haven't had so much fun watching a youtube video in so long. I remember them from childhood. I'll have to pick up some of their CD's. Thanks for posting this.
It is even more fun when you see them in person! I have gotten to see them twice. I aughed till I hurt! But they do have gorgeous, well trained voices as well. The kssshhhhh is the sound of the cymbals as well as the match put to the canon's powder!
They were French from 1962 to 1973 and English to present day. These would be English ones as it looks from the hairstyles that this was sometime in the eighties.
(...continued) basically dislike the Swingle Singers very much, so this positive first thought was against all of the prejudice against the Swingle Singers I might have had). Then came the choreography, and I thought "of course, they can't resist being stupid and doing bad and unnecessary choreographies, but whatever, maybe the music will be worth putting up with it". But when the "gags" started, I realised this is just a cheesy and shallow circus act. Well, if they have to ruin music, so be it.
Who cares if they do cheesy actions while singing. It is actually really fun. You wouldnt know, because you are just an observer. But really, who gives a damn about you. They are having fun, I can tell. This is what music geeks look like when they rock out. Deal with it.
@Nusq7 Tell me: Why should I take the classics always seriously? I do it when I feel like it. And I take them easy when I want to. Have you ever read about Mozart? How much fun he had in his life and with his music? I want to take the classics at least as much easy as I take them seriusly.
@Madhatter1781 I am sorry for you that a mere TH-cam comment that contains a simple review/opinion of a musical performance is enough to ruin an entire day for you. But if you're that easily put down, you might consider not reading TH-cam comments at all.
Well, firstly this is an English choir... But why is this culturally bereft? Because it's well-known? They've done some much more obscure pieces; there's a gorgeous one of When I Am Laid In Earth on TH-cam...
does the guy on the far left remind anyone else of Monica's ex boyfriend on Friends? the one thats older than her, can't remember the name, Richard or summit :P This is amazing though :)
Russians would probably get upset if they saw this...I bet Tchaikovsky would not appreciate his music to be made a mockery of either....But they are very good singers.
They were SPLENDID... I first heard them in Bach's "Variations on the G string" back in the '60's. and I've been hooked since. One of the girls came to give an "a solo" concert of her own in my town's theatre: WHAT A VOICE!!! The audience was spellbound. Is the group still (2011) in existence?
apparently rinski my friends uncle was a bomber pilot in the Russian airforce..he would listen to these when he was bombing afganistan in the early 80s..haunting stuff

2:12 is that seriously just a really prominent overtone??? 'cause it sounds like a soprano singing, but they're singing inner voice material at this point. However, when sopranos do come in 2:16, they're a little flat and slide up to the note. lol
Wow... I didn't count how many times this made me laugh out loud. In fact, I never even got started because there was no first time. These "gags" are less funny than the most boring Family Guy gags, and that is saying something. And don't get me wrong, it's not because I'm comparing this to the original, because I don't even know the original. On the contrary, at the beginning, I thought "Wow, this might even amount to something good" (and I should add at this point that I (continued...)
@drpibbandmrpepper They are not the orginals. The originals are the french "Swingle Singers" group from the 60s. You can see videos of them by searching "Swinger singers" on TH-cam (the TH-cam user who uploaded their videos has mistaken their name).
They were kinda a follow up group to Les Double Six , en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Double_Six *french contemporaries to the Americian Jazz vocalese group Lambert Hendricks and Ross*
In 1973, the original French group disbanded and Ward Swingle moved to London and hired members who debuted as Swingle II. The current group performs primarily a cappella.
(continued) If you had actually sung in a choir then you would know how much raw talent piled on top of rehearsal time it would take to perform this piece at such a high level. Yes, the actions are cheesy, but it was a different time. I for one am prepared to forgive them for the cheddar as long as I have permission to shut my eyes, listen and enjoy my day.

Я с тобой из Българии поклон
first time I read the name to my friend he couldn't stop laughing... I made a mistake ... Single Swingers....
You're better than me: "swindle singers" ...
Stasi Ganchev Hilarious ( not )
Hahahahahaha!
i thought i read the same thing
ABSOLUTELY BLOODY BRILLIANT! Their performance left me crying with joy!
I was bored so I typed "1812 overture acapella"
Found this gold
Wow! A blast from the past. I loved the Swingles then, and I still do. Thank you so much for this brilliant video.
E' incredibile come l'intonazione sia davvero perfetta, nemmeno una sbavatura, sono davvero grandiosi.
It's amazing that most of you didn't ever heard about the Swingles...

kindheart1956 Really? I felt that the bass singer had a slight hiccup in pitch.
Lyrics:
Da da, bum bum, ah ah, na, na, boom boom
Oh my god, I haven't seen this video in about 7 years.
beautiful harmonies, melodies, intonation, dynamics, basically everything. marvelous performance!!!!!
I've always liked them - first time I've seen them - made my day! Thanks much for posting.

What a beautiful thing...
This song is great, and the voices...
OMG
wow that's REALLY INCREDIBLE !!!
i'm sure that'd impresses me for my whole life
i actually have an audio version with real cannons. It's pretty awesome, especially when it comes out of 3 foot tall speakers.
HAHAHA! that was fantastic. most entertaining arrangement of the overture i've ever heard/seen!
1:11 that lady's voice is so beautiful
It sounds like an aria out of an opera! Very eerily beautiful!
Cool! Can I get the lyrics?

Талантливо опошлили и великого Чайковского,и великое произведение.
Молодец! Коротко и ясно. Я уж собрался разразиться громом и молнией. А тут в одном предложении. Браво!
A long-time family favourite. Thanks so much for posting it.

Maybe somebody don't know but the end of the overture have a text.
It wasn't written with text, but songs with text were derived in composing it, most notably the hymn Spaisi Gospodi and a Russian folk song were used multiple times in the overture.
LOL The guy at 2:12 scared the crap outta me! Very enjoyable though, thanks to Adelfred for the share :0) 5*
this is the most amazing group I have ever heard, I first heard them in the 80's. I love that they sing classical music. Its complex enough with instruments. They are extremely talented.
Somebody stuffed a load of instruments (and explosives) into those people!

Nice to see it being carried on.

Muito grato por esta perola ! Sehr Gut ! Danke
Russians would probably get upset if they saw this...I bet Tchaikovsky would not appreciate his music to be made a mockery of either....But they are very good singers.
¡ Amazing ! It reminds me of a german band from the early XX century called Comedian Harmonist.
Amazing work!
what you are hearing is not a machine gun nor fireworks. It believe it is a supposed to be a drum roll on a snare drum.
hahaha well funny.
but does repeating "utter" make it stronger? I think once you have said "utter" that covers it.
actually 1700-1799 would be the 18th century, but 1800's would be 1800-1899 (which would be the 19th century).
Do these guys do this for a living? I so, I can't believe it. After a while this WILL cease to amuse me.
Well done But I prefer the instrumental one. Especially when put to slow motion explosions and such
I think its an amazing performance from a group of talented people. Certainly different and well done.
Whew, I was worried they were going to leave out the Quasimoto part! Glorious as always! Such fun!
Yes (2023) they still exist though founder Ward Swingle died in 2015.
Que é isso? Um milagre de vozes? Estou emocionada!
Impresionante, no fallaron en ninguna nota
the hairs on my neck stood up. This is awesome!
saranno pure bravi, ma si sente troppo la mancanza dell' "orchestra" e della sua relativa forza ...
People should not fear their governments; Governments should fear their people.
no ward swingle is my grand father not tchaikovsky my last name is Swingle
Просто вокальные виртуозы👍
Funny how year nor age matters as fart jokes, even in a fancy concert hall, will draw laughs
apparently rinski my friends uncle was a bomber pilot in the Russian airforce..he would listen to these when he was bombing afganistan in the early 80s..haunting stuff
Класс.
Вот бы они марсельезу так же исполнили! Я бы посмеялся.
Воображение и артистизм просто потрясающи!
WORLDS BEST VOCAL GROUP!
thas gtta b the coolest thing ever..wish i could do that
what do you expect from my great great grandfather?
This just TOO good.
LOL funny as hell, remind me a family guy episode
Acappella (無樂器伴奏合唱) 那是中世紀教堂中所發展出來無樂器伴奏人聲合唱音樂
its music, why does it have to be about racism?
wat are you talking about??? They're the best.
I don´t miss ANYTHING!!!! The purpose is to play it just with voices, and it´s amazing what voice can do!!!
Surely only the Swingles could make a brilliant acapella version of 1812! Amazing.

"England's Swingle Singers"? I always thought they were French!
Oui, I had their album in the mid 1960's. Amazing voices!
They were kinda a follow up group to Les Double Six , en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Double_Six *french contemporaries to the Americian Jazz vocalese group Lambert Hendricks and Ross*
I believe they began in France, but currently are based in London.
In 1973, the original French group disbanded and Ward Swingle moved to London and hired members who debuted as Swingle II. The current group performs primarily a cappella.
This group has a recording of a Berio piece that I like a lot as well caled "A-Ronne"

This is what I think i sounds like when I hum in the shower
it's sort of fun, more for its novelty value than for any aesthetic reason
fukin amazing!!
They are from England.
This is pretty good. altough it is a rater old movie, and it is nog the whole play I think Pjetr would be pleased with seeing it.
How brilliantly flexible is the human voice! What fun! Keep it up !🎉❤
