The funniest thing for me right now is seeing this video confirming my thoughts: yes, early mappers often used cycles for no reason, placed spikes anywhere they could, and just had fun as they went along.
I did a fan remake of the Gauntlet Revamped map a while back - Gauntlet ReRevamped - and I would love it if you could take a look at both maps, including the oldest version of it, I'd really appreciate it as I have an interest in old maps and the esthetics of the nascent community myself.

:o i made one of these maps !! it's so trash lmao. im pretty sure an update actually broke lateral damage completely, bc it's meant to start you at the leftmost spawn point - also, iirc the heart is the reward for getting theo to the end, and the true ending is getting theo to the end + all touch switches. trust me i make like, actually good stuff now tho
