    I lived in Malaysia for 8 years. It’s a wonderful country with tolerant people. But public affection is not a cultural norm, and to go there and kiss in public regardless of sex is extremely disrespectful to the people and the country.

    So many things went wrong with 1975.
    1) Matty Healy was drunk and publicly drinking a bottle of whiskey on stage. Which was very unprofessional and disrespectful to most Muslim audience here;
    2) Matty publicly criticizing and didn't obey Malaysian culture and laws. When in Rome, you are supposed to do as the Romans;
    3) Matty publicly kissing his male band member. Even straight couples in Malaysia don't kiss in public;
    4) His action caused the whole Good Vibes festival was cancelled by the government. It was supposed to be a 3 days festival but it got canceled on day 1;
    5) Other artists that were invited to Good Vibes were affected and denied the chance to perform for Malaysian fans;
    6) The organizer company suffered losses about RM10 million and reputation damage due to the cancellation of festival. They actually gave Malaysian authority an undertaking that 1975 would not pull the same stunt as what they did in Abu Dhabi. Based on some source, festival organizer actually got confirmation from 1975's side they wouldn't do stg like this in Malaysia hence the undertaking (which unfortunately was breached due to 1975's action).
    7) It's clear that 1975 did this to get publicity but such is a very selfish action because many fans, artists and organizer suffered from this.
    And guess what, 1975 was banned at 11.30 pm on 21/7/2023 (Friday) and they took a 5.30 am flight to fly off from Malaysian on 22/7/2023 (Saturday). They fled the country as soon as possible because they knew the police were coming for them. Sure enough, at 2.30 pm (Saturday) police report was lodged but at the time they already fled the country and no arrest could be made. They challenged the laws and culture but didn't have the guts to face the legal consequences. What a bunch of cowards.

    The 1975 agreed to abide by the guidelines and took the money from the concert organiser but then they knowingly BROKE the agreement. The band should've been sued for that. Then Matty started his show by saying "I'm not in the mood" to the audience when they PAID tickets to see artists perform their music. That's an insult to the audience. He went up the stage drunk, spitting everywhere and crushing the organiser's drone. Is this behaviour normal in England? I don't want to think that debauchery and vandalisme are considered charming in England or among the white people.

    Imagine a Malaysian artist coming to a western country and protests against western values, bashing the LGBT, or western religions or customs! It's such a arrogant colonizer mentality to feel that the whole world needs to abide by your own standards! The best way to protest a country with policies and customs you don't agree with, if you feel that strongly about it, is simply by not going there in the first place, or not to do business with them. For some reason the west criticises Arab, Muslim, Asian countries, by not conforming to their values, and yet they can't stop engaging with them, to get their sweet money, resources, labour, fancy vacation spots and market shares. The stunt pulled by the band 1975, was just a self righteous performative act to put themselves in the spotlight, than actually advance any social justice in Malaysia.

What u think Malaysia is now just going to start accepting LGBTQ all of a sudden, or have stricter rules because of the shame and embarrassment they endured. It’s literally a middle finger to everything you believe and value. And this coming from the SAME community that if you even mention them in the slightest negative remark even if you’re a comedian, will have you cancelled in a second, in AMERICA where freedom of speech is supposedly the first amendment. I mean, go be or say whatever you want that’s ok with me but when you’re self-jmage impacts MY freedom of speech, that’s when we start having problems. If Matt Healy and The 1975s were true advocates for the LGBTQ society they would’ve studied up on Malaysia prior to performing, the fact that they didn’t says a lot. They signed the contracts which stated they couldn’t do anything controversial, don’t sign if you don’t want to follow through. Matt has caused more damage to a conservative society from being drunk and thinking making out with his band mate was a good idea, this doesn’t affect his life however it does affect the LGBTQ community in Malaysia and the rest of the population. No one needed his white saviour mentality, no one asked for it, all they wanted was to see him and his band perform. He ruined the whole 3 day festival, performers, vendors, organisers, etc have all missed out due to his reckless behaviour. No country needs the West to show them the way to live.

      It has zero to do with "the West". Absolutely zero. If you are from here stand up for your f'ing society, both of you. Otherwise piss off. And that goes for all the 71 upvoters too. It is, and was 100% him. People love to virtue signal. It's as incredible as it is becoming more and more downright pathetic. I also believe, most definitely, there is a type and they're not by any means uncommon. There was no great courage in his display as I'd bet dollars to donuts he not only wants to believe there was, but _most certainly_ wants everyone else too as well, as he makes his show of "standing up for" the lgbtq+ia123xyzers. He only did it because he _knew_ there would be little, if any, consequence to him, and any there would be, would be the type he could weather and which would then justify a doubling down upon...as he then runs off back to live in the safe society where he can do so. If he thought there was or could've been, he wouldn't have. I suspect, strongly, very strongly, that in any long run, the man would be far more of an outright coward than he is, "the civil rights activist that made some heroic act", he wishes to play. Your point about contracts and signatures, if true (no, gawd damn it, I'm not necessarily doubting it) are more evidence of this, and yes, he may well be acting "the white saviour", but if so, only, so he can again, consider himself one of the "good whites". Why? Because, once more, he's a gutless f^ck. This bs is so f%king common nowadays it's making me damn near nauseous. Sick to the back teeth of the West bashing too. Cut it out. Other societies, actually, can damn well learn a lot from us, a hell of lot, and should damn well start to do so. Frankly, I personally think it's fing overdue, long overdue, and no, gawd damn it, again, am I nor anyone else, promoting it as some kind of one way street that "other societies can _only_ learn from us, and _we cannot_ from them", that I have little doubt would be the tempting "comeback" that so many in our and other societies not only believe, but have no qualms in saying outloud as they once more, go where? Stand in? Head back to? And often, very often, try to get to. But not, pray tell, stay, or try to head in, the other direction. The outright arrogance and hypocrisy is astounding and I've had it.

There were discussions about altering the constitution so all were held to be equal but this never happened.
      The NEP was supposed to give Malays a help up to improve their education and economic standing and while this has to an extent work these affirmative action laws are now referred to a "Malay Special Rights" and are untouchable. A previous prime minister referred to them a crutch and tried to encourage the Malays to throw it away do they could stand up and walk for themselves but they refuse to and still non Malays have to do business when everything is skewed against them.
      Non Malay would almost invariably mean non Muslim and the religions they follow, particularly Christianity, faces heavy restrictions. Malaysia, through it's constitution, is a secular country however in practice this is very different. Mosques are paid for and big, new shiny ones pop up all the time. Churches and other temples have to be funded privately and require permission that is nearly always refused. For this reason they often operate from office buildings or industrial units and have to do this quietly so there is no sound that Muslims might here. Where permission is granted after many years. 12 in the case of one in Shah Alam it was for a building that had to look like an office block instead of a place of worship. No bells or religious icons could be used externally. Islam can be proselytised anywhere but Christians and other groups are completely banned. Those attempting it will be quickly arrested and jailed, even foreigners who for example hand out free Bibles.
      There are so many examples of Malaysia's racist laws and policies but I'll leave you with one more, Putrajaya. A new city built ostensibly to be the centre of government it was quickly apparent it was to be a city that excluded non Malays. 98% of Putrajaya's population are Malay and every aspect of any other ethnicity is missing. There is a church but it looks like an Islamic office building, there is a Chinese temple but once again looks the same. Putrajaya attempts to erase the presence of 35% of the Malaysian population and of course it was their taxes that paid for city where it's very clear they're not wanted.
      You tell me there's nothing racist in the above.

    For those who are attacking the Muslim majority countries for being anti-lgbt or whatever, I live in the Europe and public display of affection for same sex couples is extremely rare even here, let alone same sex couples will not even hold hands in public and will act just like friends. It is perhaps a common thing in USA (I don't know, I have never been there) or in mainstream media. But it is not only looked down upon in Asian countries, but also in the so-called civilized societies of the West it is still a taboo topic or even a novel thing, and not so widely accepted by the general population. The laws might not be there to persecute marginalized groups, but still the intolerance and unwritten rules still exists almost everywhere in the world. So, I do not like this double standard and all the judgmental comments.

I think the results of multiple referendums in different European countries to legalize gay marriage and civil unions are very telling of what the majority of its citizens think about the issue.

Do you forget the Hindus concerning the Padmaavat film and all the death threats and protests? How about the Burmese monks calling for the extermination of Muslims. Burn the Torah or the Hindu scriptures like that and you'd get the exact same reaction. Whenever I hear of book burners it's always Hitler that springs to mind. If you want to share that common trait with Hitler, go ahead, but you'll never see a Muslim burning the bible, not out of fear, but out of respect. I'm gay and I think there is a fine line between freedom of speech and being disrespectful, one thing is going to a debate about religion and being honest about what you think religion is doing wrong, the same goes for some stand-up comedians making a joke with religion, homosexuality and so on ( if you get offended by jokes don't go to a comedy show of a comedian known for doing dirty jokes ) but once you go to someone else country you should respect their customs, laws and country predominant religion ( no different than you coming to my house knowing I have a dog and then once here complain you don't like a dog around you legs, you can also learn about that country culture and realise they go against your beliefs and lifestyle and travel somewhere else

      Hmm respect should never come at the cost of respecting a law that for example will imprison you for being gay or give you a death penalty because the fascist government their at the time is telling you that gays should die or in the case of Malasia capital punishment. Why should anyone respect anyone else being killed or attacked or imprisoned because that goes against the believes of others.
      The only reason why gays in say America have it far better is because gay people had to riot, march and protest to be heard and get equal protections under the laws. Being gay at the time was considered mighty disrepectful and you would have been beaten up and abanded by everyone you love and been considered shameful and disrespectful to be resulting in you being kicked out and made homeless. What respect should there be would you respect your parents for doing that, would you respect your friend's parents for kicking your friend out to be homeless because of their religious belifs? Vile believes should be repriminded and if burning a book gets that message out so be it.
      So if burning that book get's people talking even a little and help towards that goal it's fine.

    There is a way for the band to protest & still be respectful. Refuse the invitation & give the reason that they disagree with Malaysia's antigay law or something. Doing trash thing like this means that they have no respect toward their fans that came to the festivals. Imagine seeing a band you admire on stage only to also witness them getting drunk, spitting at the audiences, smashing the drone & talking rude to the audiences. They have zero respect for people who have different value then them. Trash kind of human tbh.

      Your understanding of freedom of religion is lacking. In it people have the right to believe and promote their beliefs. I have the right to not like them and to promote my beliefs. The belief itself deserves no respect, so it can even be mocked. I find mocking doesn't help, so i prefer to just disprove.

      @@jonatand2045 Understood. Personally, I don't see any point to actively disprove other people's religious beliefs nor do i wish to be convinced of other ppl's convictions. You do you. Only if it comes up naturally in a conversation with a person with differing beliefs, will I then say my piece.
