Stories from the Best League of Legends Tournament Ever

  • A documentary on the history of the greatest tournament LoL's ever had - IPL5.
    This event was what many saw as the "real" season 2 world championship. While riot games has always left worlds as a single elimination bracket without too many interregional games, IPL5 took things in a completely different direction. Mixing the excitement of best of 1 series with a double elimination bracket let us see both the exciting talents from some of the best teams in the world (Team WE, CLG, Fnatic, TPA) while also allowing upsets happen with goliaths falling. It was a sight to behold and deserves its own league of legends documentary.

    As a 25 year old now, who started playing League in beta as a 15 year old, these docs get me super emotional. It's just a video game but it is such an emotional experience for me to reminisce on these old tournaments that I watched live. So many things that are easily forgotten just going through life, but these are truly a work of art. I really appreciate the hard work that goes into these. You don't get a lot of people who you run into that can talk to you about these early days of League let alone video games in general. It feels almost like an old friend having a conversation with me and going, "remember when this happened?"

    • @ScutMonkey

      That's by design. The version of league we play now is like League of Legends 3. The jungle camps are different, wards are different, Baron buff is different, dragons are different. It's not the same game at all. If Riot had their way, you'd never see a 45 minute game again, much less an hour and that's not a bad thing.

    • @daisychain5125
      @daisychain5125 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Early LoL was a lot closer to DotA. Longer games, less damage, more waveclear, more cc (especially targeted ones), less dashes. As years passed, they oriented the game towards what they thought was good for viewers (and it probably is the case): faster paced games, more playmaker champs. Early League was dominated by scaling champions like Nasus, Cho, Anivia, Karthus, Orianna. What mattered was farming into big AoE in teamfights. It started shifting in late 2012-early 2013 with the introduction of PLENTY of assassins that completely shifted the midlane meta. In a few months, Riot released Fizz, Ahri, Zed, Kha'Zix (played mid back then) and similar champions like Rengar. Their intent was clear: they wanted plays, and they got legendary outplays (the infamous ZedvZed where Faker humiliated Ryu, but tons of others like a Bjergsen's Zed solokill on Peke's Ahri that I remember). They had a new identity to the game: more dashes and more damage than DotA. Games were still pretty long from time to time, especially in some metas, but they clearly showed they did not like that. They changed Baron buff, they introduced Elder, then Dragon's soul. Eventually this all culminated in 2018: the reworks of Akali and Irelia , the introduction of champions like Sylas or Kai'Sa and changes to items completed what they were pursuing for years. The meta since then is fast-paced, full of outplays, with a heavy reliance on sololanes and 1-3-1. There have been some exceptions but it is now very clear that you cannot just scale for lategame in pro-games. This also started an era of Chinese and European dominance with highly agressive and fast-paced teams. I thinkt the best example is the 2018 G2 roster which went from pretty average to one of the best in the Worlds with that final meta shift, with Perkz and Wunder completely stomping the teamfight style of RNG through 1-3-1. Now Korea is kind of back on top, but with fast-paced teams too. For people who follow League since just a few years, it's hard to realise how slooooooow it used to be and how different it was. There was probably half the damage, 10% of the dashes but some stupid things like 2 secs targeted ccs on low cooldowns, chappions like Anivia being able to stall the game for an hour alone and things like 8 GAs per game. The average game was 40 minutes and it was more common to have a 1 hour one than a 20 minutes one.
      I think the best way to see that is to look at adcs. The way they made them viable was not to enhance their initial identity (DPS anti-tank and scaling) or to reduce their threats (midgame, burst and dashes), it was to boost their weakness by giving them an assassin identity. Literally. Kai'Sa, Galeforce, ...

    Upsets are not a factor you should be artificially trying to create with a bracket/tournament structure.
    Double elim means the two best teams are the most likely to end up in the finals, giving the best chance at a GOOD finals match. A team that upsets to make finals, is going to get stomped if they dont overperform again and again.

      @RyumaXtheXKing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why not make all matches bo1. That’ll lead some upsets. Wouldn’t that be entertaining. Single game of finals. That would definitely be upsetting.

    I used to watch gbay 5 or so years ago when he was trying to push to diamond on irelia. I quit league in early 2016 barely touching the game that year.
    To come back and see all of these epic documentaries is amazing!
    And awesome to finally understand where that epic game came from

    WOW a video like this NEEDED to exist. Thanks for preserving this history in a way that really allows new players/viewers to get a feeling for what this time in esports was like back in 2012 and how big this tournament was for League at the time.

    Hey Gbay, I just saw your post about not many people watching, and I just wanted to encourage you. I am fairly new to league, I picked it up in college a few years ago, and I was not around during many of the events you describe in your documentaries. I am an avid lover of history and these videos help me understand many of the current issues that league has. Thank you for all the effort you put into these videos!

    Man, I’m so late in seeing this. It got drowned out in all the notifications I get. I always enjoy your docs, Gbay. Your passion for League really shines through in each one, and can get me invested in whatever story you are telling, even though I’m not invested in the game as much as I once was, because you always present each story in such an intimate way. Please keep up the hard work, and don’t let this discourage you!

    Hello! I was the managed of FNATIC during seasons 1-3 and this video among a few others are really great to watch. If you have any questions about Fnatic's experiences during the early stages of Lol Esports, or what it was like to be in the scene during those times, feel free to get in touch. Attended events such as Season 1 Finals, IEM's, DreamHack's, IPL 5, Season 3 Finals, First LCS EU Spring & Summer, First Allstars event in Shanghai.
    Thanks again for the epic nostalgia!

    LCS era has made the current LoL players numb to what it used to be and what it still could be, and thats my theory about why the viewership is down.
    Most players that didn't experience the raw evolution of the game and scene in the early days dont understand the greatness of ipl 5. Not only was it a great tourney on its own, it was the grand conclusion and symbolic ending to the early days and first era in the game's history.
    WE was the favorite to win if you really knew about the game, but most of the public was fixated on TPA, and M5 since they were the most known. Weixiao was the first talent that was really considered to be the best in the world and the predecessor to Faker. Mostly lost and overshadowed by SKT in the years to come.
    Most people fall asleep when thinking of LoL esports and its a great tragedy. The circuit scene was 100x better not only for spectators, but for the meta game as well (only finding out what the best players were playing every month or so instead of the weekly basis). I understand what the LCS brings to orgs and players, but LoL history will never be the same ever again, and im glad it went out with a bang with ipl5.
    Thx for the vid gbay!

    I've never watched a LoL doc. I've never played LoL. I don't even know how the game itself works, yet you managed to entertain me for those full 57 minutes, and that's a skill of its own!
