- Pure muscle car royalty, the near-mythical 1969 Camaro ZL1 was instigated by performance-oriented Chevy dealer Fred Gibb of La Harpe, Illinois.
Known internally at Chevrolet as ‘COPO 9560,’ the ZL1 was purpose-built for dragstrip dominance with the all-aluminum 427 CI powerplant derived from Jim Hall’s famous Can-Am racers at its heart. Factory-rated at 430 HP, the ZL1 mill actually exceeded 500 ponies and debuted as the most powerful engine Chevrolet offered to the public at the time.
This legendary 1969 Camaro ZL1 sold for $700,000 at Mecum Indy 2023.

I love that shade of green
What a rare beauty!!
Can't get enough of the '69 ZL1.
Rare exotic beast. 👍👍
Wicked
Just curious if this was the Cliff Ernst ZL1? I got a chance to see his ZL1 back in 1994. Seen his whole car collection. My brother ask if he could fire up the ZL1. He did! Man that thing sounded amazing!!!
Suggested retail price: $7269.35
Very rare. An ls6. Doesn't come close
I wonder what it would have cost brand new. Likely, w/ the COPO pkg, somewhere in the 6k - 7k range.
Hindsight ...
You are spot on! The telling blow for COPO 9560 was the price. Fred Gibb is quoted as saying he believed the cars would list for around $4900. Unfortunately for Gibb, the new edict at Chevrolet came through that options had to be priced according to production costs. Just the "HIGH PERFORMANCE UNIT" option was priced at $4160.50. (For reasons unknown, subsequent ZL-1s were priced at $4160.15) The mandatory power disc brakes and transmission option pushed sticker prices over $7300 in 1969.
$7269.35
Still rather have a LS6 Malibu
