I was 19 years old when I bought a used 69 camaro in 1973 and it looked just like this one😊 and that’s no bullshit, had it for 4 years, sold it and got married and bought a house and moved on, I was young enough to enjoy it, no regrets, I now have 9 grandchildren and still married to the same girl , every cop in town knew my name 😊
It’s like you said, he’s had it for that many years and hasn’t really changed anything. I think that’s pretty special. It shows a level of appreciation for what the car is and it means it must be a great fit for the owner. So cool.
I fell in love with Camaros when I first saw one in the parking lot of the apartment complex I lived in as a kid in the spring or 1967. Over the decades I've owned 6.
I just found this video. It gave me goosebumps. I bought my Z/28 in July of 1969. It was brand new. I still have it. It does go around corners like he said. It was my daily driver for years.
What a honey of a car and congrats to the owner for hanging onto it! I had to go back and check the underneath shots, because it sounded like the car had the factory chambered exhaust. Certainly made beautiful sounds. I finally figured out why I like your reviews so much - your respect for the car. The way you drive them, shows their capabilities but never are they abused. One final thought - when the @#$@#$ did 1970 become “50 years ago”? Shouldn’t that be like 1940 at least? 😂. Thank you as always ~ Chuck
😅I totally agree Chuck, hell, I feel like the 1980s were 15 years ago. As for the cars, each and every one is an absolute privilege to drive and I don't take that responsibility lightly.
Side note...look at all the pony cars rated at just under 300 hp..a result of insurance companies setting a 300 hp line for increased premiums..mustangs..camaros..amc..mopar..all pretty much made more than 300 hp in the real world Cool to see the Gilmore get some love..if any of y'all are near southwest Michigan be sure to see this world class museum
Full confession...I am not a big Camaro fan. However, I love that Monte has owned the car as long as he has and I love that it's really, really nice but not perfect because it's been used. Mike, thanks again for something special.
I had a 69 z28 that I fully restored . 302 was balanced , and had a general kenetics cam that almost matched the Z offroad cam . 410 gears . 7200 rpm with stock points . It was fast . Ive driven boss 302s . No comparison.
The 4.10 would help for sure. In my good friends 69 headers and rejecting the carb helped, but a hot aftermarket ignition made a huge difference. It was evidently lacking fire.@@manher4335 After the ignition it revved so much quicker and with power.
Very cool car. I know the monster horsepower stuff from that era get alot of love, but I like the more race ready versions like this Z/28 and the Boss 302.
To give the z28 DZ 302 more creedance than the factory rated 295 hp rating, engine tester on TH-cam Richard Holdener dyno tested the DZ 302 with a tune and headers on the engine stand. The output came to 357 hp and 334 lb-ft torque. The 302 was never a high torque engine like the 350 which came later in 1970.The Lt1 350 z28 engine made horsepower everywhere in the rpm range and significant torque over the DZ 302 .
I agree more hp than 295 my buddy bought and original 69 z Dz 302 headers it had been rebuilt the previous owner put a put a Duntov cam with 4;10s. We smoked a 69 road runner with a 440 plus 6 3 out of 3 Fun a fast car
My first car was a 69 Camaro convertible. Loved it! I can tell you that the 290hp rating is low. It is really making more like 350hp, and some even estimate 400hp. The 290hp rating was probably for insurance purposes. The 69 was a stunning car and a true icon. Who needs an expansive computer screen!
Na, it's accurate based on the ratings they used at the time. With comparable rear end gears, virtually every other performance Chevy of that year was quicker in the 1/4 mile and top speed.
When I was in high school, my friend was an amateur boxer. His dad told him that if he won the national championship, he could choose the car he wanted. He won the NAAU boxing championship and chose a 1969 Z28, orange with black stripes and a few go faster options. It was awesome.
My absolute FAVORITE muscle car and year of Camaro of all time- and in my favorite ’69 Camaro color of Daytona Yellow. I had a ‘69 RS Z/28 that was Daytona Yellow when I was a senior in high school. I’ve had a bunch of Chevy cars- mainly Camaros and Chevelles, and a couple of Mustangs over the years, but my ‘69 RS Z/28 I had in high school is the only one that I regret not holding on to, to this day. Monte was smart to keep his Z/28. Thanks for a sharing such cool story and car.👍🏻

Hit up the smoking tire podcast again for some more press for the show? Always been a fan of your content and way of communicating. Cadilac el Camino shoooo that thing was sexy too.
Mike, I am really liking this series. I am going be critical of the term you are throwing around continually: Muscle Car. The Camaro, Mustang, Javelin, Firebird, Cougar, Challenger and Barracuda are ALL Pony Cars. Kevin Oeste has a great explanation of the difference on his channel. I will leave the Sport Car and Full-Sized performance car definitions aside for now. A Muscle Car is an American Mid-Sized car rear wheel drive built from approximately 1962-ish to about 1976-ish, with a minimum of 383 cubic inches displacement, and a 2-door sedan or convertible, with various combinations of transmissions and axle choices. The Corvette, Cobra, and maybe the AMX define the American Sports Car. The Full-Sized cars are Impala's, Wildcats, Galaxies, Polara's, etc. I give full credit to the Australians for the Falcon's and Torana's Let to controversy and arguing begin.
I like the "Jekyll & Hyde" effect these cars have, I rode in one. The monstrous Hyde mode when this thing decides to shoot from 6k to over 7k is unreal lol love it.
I had a 69 Z/28 same color, no ZL2 hood and no spoilers when I bought it used in summer of 69 just after graduating from high school. It had an October build date. So the hood was not available then. I added front and rear spoilers to it. It had the console gauges and chambered exhaust. Which by the way I replaced later as it was always coming off. FYI Chevy came up with the Z/28 package so that they could be raced in SCCA Trans Am series. The engine size was limited to 5.0 liters. So Chevy came up with the engine using either a 283 block with 327 crank or the other way around. The engine has a short stroke thus it could rev fast and high. No air conditioning was available. No automatic transmission. Disc brakes in the front. A fun car. I later sold it around 78 or 79 to a young man.
You know whats crazy? Every car show i go to i always see a 69 Camaro in some form or another, no matter how many times I see one i never get tired of looking at these. Its one of the coolest cars ever, especially the Z28.

Is the seat moved back all the way? I’m 6’2” 190 and when I have my seat all the way back in my 70 Z28, It’s too far back, I have to move it up cause the steering wheel is far away. In 74 I bought a 68 Z/28 and it was tighter than my 70.😮 I bought my 70 4-spd Z28 from the original owner in 1981. He keeps asking me, are you ready to sell it yet? Nope.
Just as you said, had a 70 454 Chevelle SS , sold it, had much more fun with the 69 302 Z28, just like my 64 GTO with a Chevy 327-375HP 4 bolt main also lots of fun. Those were the days !!!
The engine Suffix Code, just an easy way to identify the engine and was stamped on the front pad. The 69 Z28 4-bolt engine was DZ, the 67 and 68 with 2-bolt blocks were MO.
I owned, showroom fresh, a Z/28 from the very next year, 1970, the Second Gen Camaro, with the next level engine, the 350 cubic inch, 360 HP LT-1. It was a fabulous machine, the sweetest engine, and a bear to parallel park! I'm amazed that the car you got to drive actually exists. I crashed mine, it was repaired incompetently by a Chevy dealer, and traded in, six months later, on the next car my family needed... Sigh.
We were very fortunate for a few reasons. First, that Monte kept the car for all these years. Second, he resisted trends and the urge to modify it. Third, he was kind enough to let us experience it and bring it everyone. Amazing owner and an outstanding car!
Right on dude. I know a guy that had a 70 boss 302 and beat tons of 69Z s . He said he ,d get a monster jump off the line due to the stangs better bottom end and the 302 boss would wind so high the chevy got left in the dust. He beat a 69 427 chevelle by a fender one time and the chevy guy made him pop the hood to show him it was a SB and not a BB transplant .
@@twolak1972 '67-'69 Camaro stock Z/28 cars were sloth-slow turds. NHRA pure stock class, the Z/28 Camaro was two classes lower than the Boss 302 Mustang.
The Z/28 and Boss 302 get a lot of love. I think a lot of it has to do with their motors. I forget which magazine, could have been Car Life, Motor Trend, Car and Driver, etc., did a comparison test with the Z/28, Boss 302, Dart GTS and I think Javelin. The Dart GTS 340 was objectively and subjectively the best on the road course. Believe me, I was disappointed that neither the Z/28 or Boss 302 had the better lap time. And the drivers all criticized the Z/28 and Boss for the bad handling traits.
Huff, Huff yes 69Z- MEANS alot, but some folk don't care. That's ok. I watched these autos, as a kid, barrel up the street. I wanted one. Owned several nice ones. Good times.
In 1981 an employee at my dads business, Mark (18 yrs old) got a numbers matching Z28 for Christmas. On a snowy Saturday evening his dad pleads with him to not take the beautiful Jet Black Z28 out, and instead take out the family 1977 Oldsmobile 88 (nice car) which had snow tires. Unfortunately, his dad gave in and Mark took out the Z28. Twenty minutes later he wraps the car around a telephone pole, the police ticket him and noted that he had been drinking. The front end was destroyed and the frame bent. The car was sold as is to someone who was restoring a Z28. This in no way is an excuse or justifies what happened, but in 1981 the 1969 Camaro Z28 was not that that rare of a car, you could still find them for less than $6k-$7k. Well, his parents went from being friendly to ballistic, actually throwing him out of the house. He joined the Marines three months later and we lost contact.
I had a 69 z/28. In 1975. Had a few muscle cars over the years. The best was the 69 z/28. The 290 hp was under rated. That hp rating was at 5800 rpm. We all know these 302 could pull easy 7000 rpm. Actual hp was around 350 from what i have been told. My z/28 had 4:10 gears. Was a dog starting out till rpm was past 4500 rpm. That where the power started. Wish i stilk had it. Bought it in 1975 for $ 4250.00. Canadian dollars. Lol...
Shoulder belt? My dad’s ‘72 Z28/RS has those but they are still routed along the head liner and have never been used. The lap belts have console holsters which are pretty cool in retrospect.
False advertising. The 69 Z was not set up to run with THE BOSS. The ford 302 had better heads, camshaft and solid lifter configuration and better rear end gearing. Off the line the fords powerband was awesome while the Z did not make power till it hit 5 grand . By that time the race was over.
I bought my 70 Z/28 4 speed in 1981 from the original owner. I ran into him about 3 yrs ago and he asked me if it was for sale. Nope.😮 I told him a friend of mine owns 2 and I could find out if any are for sale. He said, no, I want mine back.
The first-gen Z28 (and Boss 302 Mustang) were incredibly overrated. Many prominent magazines wrung them out in the quarter mile back in the day, and low 15's were common
You had to be a car guy back then to get these cars to run, just buying a new car and taking it straight to the track didn't work back then like it does today, you had to tune and tweak or you would get embarrassed real quick.
@@thud9797nah they just aren't that quick or fast without fairly major mods. 14.7. - 14.9 is about the usual. This guy is talking all rhetoric and feel. Nowhere does he give you actual performance data.

A lot of exaggeration here from fanboys. Hot Rod magazine, 1969, tested one, with aftermarket headers, 4.56 rear instead of 3.73. best run, 14.34 @101. Yes, that's good, but using gearing that you're almost to top speed at end of 1/4 mile. Going to better tires, they got down to 14.20. Nothing to indicate 400gross HP. Heavier muscle cars, with 400hp or more rating, and similar rear end gearing, were regularly running low 13's. Here endeth the lesson.

Great video. Love my 69 Camaro . Not a Z28 but upgraded to big block. 🚗
There is no bad 1969 Camaro!
Bonus question #37 > What do the Initials D.Z. refer to?
LeMans Blue was the best colors. I had a 69 Lemans blue Camaro. Miss it dearly!
Keep rocking Mike!
Thank you Sir!!
Not one stock 1967-1969 Camaro Z/28 ever beat my stock 1969 Ford Boss 302 Mustang. I bought it new form Tasca Ford in RI,
Great story, thanks for sharing...
Answer to a question nobody ask
@@1234597114why claim Camaros eat Mustangs?
Wow that's an awesome car
A dream car.
I had a 75 camaro that ate mustangs and others every weekend , that was fun !!
Uh, that's a little hard to believe, when the 1969 Z/28 was the 1968- 69 TransAm champion 2 years running.
@@WELLRESPECTEDAPE Those were modified cars though. The magazine was testing showroom stock cars.
I’m 6’4 230 and I love the way I fit in my 68 RS/SS Camaro 350 with 4 speed Muncie 115k original miles. Front disc brake car.
Huff, Huff yes 69Z- MEANS alot, but some folk don't care. That's ok. I watched these autos, as a kid, barrel up the street. I wanted one.
Owned several nice ones. Good times.
🙌🙌🙌
Rated at 290 bhp dynoed at 360 bhp back in 1969 with zero mods.
Good for him. This man knew what he had for a long long time. Hope he never sells it and drives it for another 50K !
Agreed!
The 69 Z/28, my all time favorite Muscle Car
And it was an absolute beauty
My father in law is the original owner of a 65 Mustang all original with a 289! Mike can we set something up?
What a story, hopefully hes doing well! Thank you for sharing.
Lol...
Not even a Guldstrand Mod ? and not even reinforcing the welds of all the subframe supports??
Please expand on what that is...
I HAVE 1969 RS/Z28 CROSS RAM 53 YEARS
Did the 1969 Z28 ever come with a small block 427?
WHATS A SMALL BLOCK 427. LOL
no
The Mustang Boss 429 from the same year had 375 horsepower, how much does the Z28 have?
290... and what's the weight of a 429 compared to the Camaro's 4.9L?
How much HP did Boss 302 have? 290
Shit the L78 396 had 375 HP
The Z28 was rated at 290 HP, but made around 340-350 HP. It used the same cam and heads as the 365 HP 327 fuelie.
385 dyno,d. BOSS 302 had more horsepower better heads and cam.set up.
Not wearing the shoulder belt?
Shoulder belt? My dad’s ‘72 Z28/RS has those but they are still routed along the head liner and have never been used. The lap belts have console holsters which are pretty cool in retrospect.
I have 1969 rally sport z---I shift at 7 grand all day long----thats aerobics for the 302--
Of course they had to put "Eats Mustangs" in the caption to draw in the Ford guys and get views. 🤓
False advertising. The 69 Z was not set up to run with THE BOSS. The ford 302 had better heads, camshaft and solid lifter configuration and better rear end gearing. Off the line the fords powerband was awesome while the Z did not make power till it hit 5 grand . By that time the race was over.
super nice
68 is best looking car imo.
I bought my 70 Z/28 4 speed in 1981 from the original owner. I ran into him about 3 yrs ago and he asked me if it was for sale. Nope.😮 I told him a friend of mine owns 2 and I could find out if any are for sale. He said, no, I want mine back.
Don't ever let it go.
Favorite year of Camaro. Always wanted one in Citrus Green. What a gem. Happy for you, awesome car. Enjoy it always.
i want to build this car so badly
The dude is guessing how much horsepower its got by the feel of how much acceleration its got!?.. .
Street racer, with a 4.88 gear it worked over RTs, Roadrunners, and Corvettes. See the USA from behind my Chevrolet!
Sounds like a ripper!
Cool cars❤❤❤❤
I think the sales numbers speak for themselves, it wasn’t Ford that was nervous.
No stock '67-'69 Camaro Z/28 ever beat my stock all options '69 Boss 302 Mustang that I bought new from Tasca Ford in RI.
Dang, 59.5k miles is what my '87 Grand National had on it when I bought it in Spring of 2009. For a '69, in '23, that's practically nothing.
I love the fact Monte knew how special it was that he resisted the urge to change it. How many miles does your GN have on it now?
@@drivebigmuscle8080 77k and change.
If your dash is cracked don't cover..fix!
Pulling the dash on an older car is a mess compared to a modern car from say 2000's up. A cover is just fine.
2nd Rockford Illinois view
I was that kid who rode around in the back seat of a hugger orange 1969 camaro while my cousin who owned the car and my dad drove around beating the hell out of it and it broke the clutch disc and put a dampen on are fun! I must have been about ten years old and the year was 1977
Thanks for sharing!
They had a after market cross ram manifold you could buy, which boosted the H.P. to over 500+ h.p. from that already screamin lil 302...
gotta drive em at least once a week to run good forever.
The 69 Z was a trans-am car.
Thank you for the insight and knowledge! 🤝
I want one
290 horse at 2500RPM
Dz 302?
Why not 427 or 396!
Proof you an drive them and they "dont get ruined"
The Z28 handles because Chevrolet learned that American cars can handle: the Corvette.
More like "a ferocious little animal that gets outsold by the Mustang and intermittently goes out of production."
That doesn't mean the Mustang was better, it just means it was different.
@@drivebigmuscle8080WAY BETTER. The mustang had better heads , gearing and cam shaft configurations.
Stopped watching at the stroking of the wheel.
There are two vids from Mike that are must see because they are on opposite ends of the $$ scale however they had the same goals and execution.
" Ohio Street Freak: 1969 Chevrolet Nova - The House Of Muscle Ep. 4 "
" 200-MPH, Turbo Hemi Street Car! The Ultimate Belvedere - The House Of Muscle Ep. 3 "
" MotorTrend Channel "
And both were equally outstanding!
Doubt it eats mustangs ....mustangs are still being manufactured and they are 10x more popular
You realize the car this car is 54 years old right?
If butt hurt had a voice 🙄
This Car Put Out Like 400 Hp and Thats A Fact
Ah, no it isn't. I look forward to a link for a dyno test with factory exhaust showing anything even close. You're in fantasy land.
All time favorite. I'm a purist.
Glad you enjoy it!
I got the Super Chevy Keychain lost the 69 Camaro
too bad your magazines ceased
Sorry but Z28’s don’t “eat Mustangs”! 🤣. Go back and look at the results of the original Trans Am series! Chevy finished third behind Ford (Boss 302) and AMC (Javelin) in 1970. 1970 was the first and only year that every American Manufacturer had a factory backed team in Trans Am.
