The German cars of today are built not much better than the Tesla. Build quality of Porsche and Mercedes from the 90s and prior is unparalleled. Cars haven't improved in certain ways.

Germans of cause completely underestimated Japanese engineers and let them take pictures. They then basically rebuild, recreated and improved what they have seen.

Tbh the only thing bad about iPhones is the OS/ ecosystem and maybe the design, or should I say lack of innovation in design. The build quality is never an issue outside a few models (iPhone 6/ 6+). I’m a PC guy through and through but the iPhones, iPads, iWatch etc are great with their performance and compatibility. The only issue I have with Apple is usually the price to performance bot being ideal and that I don’t like their OS on their computers.

I had a ride in the back of a Tesla and it reminded me a lot of a 1990's Dodge Neon in terms of build quality. It went like stink, but the interior was crap for a anything, but a really low level budget car. At least the back seat did. The seat was also really short and uncomfortable for a 5 foot 10 person.

I've said for year teslas have state of the art technology in a terribly built car. They would be better off teaming up with actual car companies and offer a tesla option to their cars. Tesla shouldn't build cars of their own.

Still have yet to replace one part on it other then maintenance. Tires/brakes/fluids. Still to this day not many cars can our handle or our brake this generation of porsche. Truly amazing cars.
Agreed, my grandfather used to own an old lada, it was a literal tank, if you got into an accident with a lada it wouldn't even be a scratch, but when you even push with your hand anywhere on a tesla it bends and its extremely loud too.

I was interested in getting a tesla but after watching many videos I'll stick to Japanese cars. I love the build quality of Toyota. Their lexus line is really good as well as reliability

I’m a former Porsche dealer tech from when the 993 was new….Those cars had virtually zero rattles. The dash was basically the structure of the body. Those 911s had the best build quality of any Porsche including anything they make now.

I saw when you grabbed the seat bolster, the whole thing moved. You were able to grab the top of the dash & it easily flexed-it looked like a thin cheap piece of hard plastic. I'm a big Porsche fan and never liked Teslas, so I'm definitely with you on this one. But many parts you said are wrapped in leather in the Porsche are actually plastic or vinyl. Still a really sturdy car with great interior quality.
I have a 1955 plymouth and if I absolutely punched that metal dash there would not even be a dent compared to Tesla's dash that seems to shake under one hit💀
Pretty sure the reason the side trim and the A-pillar on the 993 feel sturdier is because modern cars have side curtain airbags, so those trim pieces are designed to fall off easier.
According to Consumer Reports magazine out of 26 auto companies rated from best to worst reliability/quality, Tesla ranks 25th. The top 3 are: 1. Mazda 2. Toyota 3. Lexus Porsche ranks 9th.

So you don't like acceleration and speed, quietness with no vibration, technology, all round camera's, efficiency - 80% better than this Porsche, 40% less maintenance, OTA updates , computer onboard, highest safety rating, can seat 5-7 people etc.

I also Own a MB C43 (was more than my M3P) - the Benz in comparison feels 20 years old, noisier, not as smooth on the road, brakes are clunky, slow as F. the only thing I prefer in the Benz are the sport seats, otherwise the Benz loses in all other categories vs my M3. And uses 80% less fuel, can fuel at home, no need to go to a gas station, maintenance 40% less. NO Contest.

Safest in the industry, highest efficiency, cars that have already done 500 000 KM on the same battery and motors. Hardware and software with potential self driving in the future.
Great comparison but If you think the Porsche is built well (which it is) you need to compare it to the 2004 Lexus LS 460 - that car is on another planet. Remember, no one ever talked about panel gaps before the Lexus LS. The Lexus LC 500 & Toyota 4runner are also perhaps the finest examples of quality beyond the closing of just doors.
The mid-2000s were the last of the best built Lexus interior. I have a 2007 GS and every inch of that interior is either wood, leather, soft touch material. No hard plastic anywhere.
I have a 2015 Lexus RC 350 F-sport and the whole car feels incredibly well built and I love the red leather seats. It just turned over 75,000 miles and there is no rattles and everything about it works like it's new. I've looked at the newer RC's and very little has changed on the exterior and the interior still looks like the 2015 models.
Plastic doorsill is common in even in luxury cars. What else would they use unless higher quality plastic? But all the rest seems like a legit complaint

You're partially correct. German vehicles are unbeatable for performance and refinement - nothing is nicer to drive - but their quality (as in reliability) is demonstrably quite poor by today's standards. If you want quality/reliability, Honda or Toyota - even their cheapest products - are vastly superior.

Even if I agree on the first part (keep in mind that some countries like France have most of their energy from nuclear power plants, but for now globally standpoint coals are the most common source of electricity) plastic isn't that much of a problem compared to things like the batteries, which make the biggest environment damage in the car. Now it is questionable how green and eco-friendly those batteries are, but thit is a different story.

Tesla is NOT a luxury car company. The build quality and the unprofessional service is inexcusable. I own a Model 3 and will tell everyone that you'll regret buying one after your warranty runs out. $200 just to diagnose problems, even if they didn't fix your problem in the first place! $500 to fix a squeaky suspension from a known design flaw! And my car has less than 35K miles! I've only had it for a little over 5 years. Tesla is charging a premium price for an emerging trend.

Sure there’s plenty of room for improvement but I think this video is proof that everyone that goes as far as saying that Teslas are badly built, and have quality comparable to cheap economy cars are simply exaggerating. It’s not that bad; nowhere near as bad as people say. About the 993 Porsche, yes it’s built amazingly. However, a 911, especially back then, is a significantly more expensive car than even a Model S. It’s no surprise that an old 911 has such outstanding quality, because the 993 in particular was so overbuilt that they couldn’t turn a profit on them. Porsche nearly went down under with that car. Why do you think they cheapened out with the 996’s build quality? Before you say anything, I’ve test drive 3 Teslas (none of which had any noticeable quality concerns) and I’ve been in plenty of new luxury cars. You know what? I’ve been in Benzs, and Infinitis with interior quality just as bad as the car in this video. Creaky, flimsy interior pieces, and some inconsistent panel gaps. What’s more, my mom bought a 2010 Audi Q5 last summer because she wanted to flip it. I drove that car from time to time, and I personally put a couple thousand miles on that car. It’s not much older than the first Model S, but that interior had several loose interior pieces and plasticy parts itself, not to mention parts of the center console that no longer functioned as intended. Let’s not forget to mention new Aston Martins too… Not that any of this bothers me in particular; I care more about the meat and potatoes of the car. I can personally care less about plastics pieces. I’m just pointing this out because people single out Tesla like crazy and all things considered it’s not bad. For the average person, the interior will feel good. It’s only when you start to really nitpick when you start to see its flaws, and even that it’s not that serious. This video itself was unbiased, but people who make outrageous statements such as the Prius on the left (in this video, to the left of the Model S) has a better interior, clearly just have intentions of defaming Tesla. My dad has a 2011 Prius. I love the Prius, it’s reliable, and I even drove an 07 in the past, but the interior is obviously way cheaper. If you’d stop exaggerating and compare both cars this would be evident to you, but people care more about what fits their narrative than actual facts, Tesla Stans included. A Tesla is a consumer product. A Porsche is the luxury version of the consumer product. Tesla's build quality will become a big issue at the pricetag they are selling the cars. The Hyundai Iconic 5 has better build quality. The Iconic 6 looks promising. And that's just 1 (low-level) brand.
A lot of the cost goes into the battery and motor which is extremely high quality, but to make the car more affordable they have to make the rest of the car cheap LOL
Carnac and other used car dealers are flooded with Teslas. BMW dealerships are flooded with Teslas from trade ins. It looks like the QA area of Teslas are staffed by retired employees.

EVs need to be light, that´s why they feel "hollow", it´s high performance metals and plastics. The real issue here is the mining process for those rare metals, which ofc is highly destructive by itself and all those hidden emissions coming with it, that nobody seems to talk about.

Total cult following who are brainwashed into thinking the tech, that you paid thousands extra for, that doesn't even work (aka autonomous driving) somehow excuses the absolutely abysmal build quality. I'll gladly take 3 min to completely fill my gas SUV, at any street corner, while the mindless Tesla sheep have to search for a charging station (that isn't broken) and then sit for an hour to charge your EV at 80%. I also lose zero range in winter parked while you Tesla owners watch your range drain down. Panel gaps, door handles that constantly fail, wing doors that will need replacing multiple times, leaking trunks, terrible paint quality ect...EV may eventually replace gas vehicles but the build quality, charging stations and charging speed are not anywhere close for me to consider switching over.
This was a very good (and fair) comparison. I feel the same way about the differenced between my Mercedes, Audi's, and my current 1st Gen Model S. I love driving the S, I love the tech and the uniqueness, but I much prefer the interiors of my German cars. The more I work on the S (installing aftermarket stuff) the more I hate the interior. Once I get it back all together, I just don't want to touch it anymore. It is definitely fragile and breaks easily. On the flip side, if they came out with all that tech and Mercedes like interior build quality, it would have been a big gamble. If they didn't sell, it would just be more money lost. Now that they have a demand, I hope they do the right thing and improve the build quality to world class standards since they are charging world class money.
Most German cars have the best build quality, plus they use the best matterials when it comes to the interior pieces. They always use the best leather, camel or horse hair carpets, wood and metals. They also always over engineer everything to last longer and not fall apart on you 4 years later. By the way I love all cars jdm and german made and some american made.
New Model S greatly improved, it's now on the quality level of a Dacia Sandero :-) Any 30k Audi A1, 30k Mercedes A-Class interiors make a Model S look like a bad joke
I'm just taking a guess but perhaps the Tesla feels cheaply because they're trying to keep the weight down especially for an electric powered vehicle. That's just a guess though. I suppose they could use carbon fiber in some places instead of plastic (which really is unnecessary) but that would drive up the price considerably.

I hate to say this but from my personal experience those Tesla cars are CHEAP! My coworker has a 2017 Model S and is so embarrassing how it fails from the moment we are trying to get in the car! The door handles don't pop up as they should when commanding from the remote. Inside it feels very spacious but light weight and fragile. It reminds me a lot of my old 1996 Mustang GT dashboard and door panels materials (plastic). The car is very quick for having 7 years or 50K miles on the clock. The interior rattles a lot with squeaking sounds coming from the plastic rubbing. Tesla sacrificed the quality for technology and speed. The speed and gas prices was their hook to win the consumers. I am not getting one of these until they improve their manufacturing and the battery charging is cordless and free! Nice Porsche and video!

I had a ride in the back of a Tesla and it reminded me a lot of a 1990's Dodge Neon in terms of build quality. It went like stink, but the interior was crap for a anything, but a really low level budget car. At least the back seat did. The seat was also really short and uncomfortable for a 5 foot 10 person.
If they could put their tech in a well built body they may have a killer product.

I’m a former Porsche dealer tech from when the 993 was new….Those cars had virtually zero rattles. The dash was basically the structure of the body. Those 911s had the best build quality of any Porsche including anything they make now.

I saw when you grabbed the seat bolster, the whole thing moved. You were able to grab the top of the dash & it easily flexed-it looked like a thin cheap piece of hard plastic. Those panel gaps look as wide as a foot path i bet to see them in real life they're wider

I also Own a MB C43 (was more than my M3P) - the Benz in comparison feels 20 years old, noisier, not as smooth on the road, brakes are clunky, slow as F. the only thing I prefer in the Benz are the sport seats, otherwise the Benz loses in all other categories vs my M3.
And uses 80% less fuel, can fuel at home, no need to go to a gas station, maintenance 40% less.

Great comparison but If you think the Porsche is built well (which it is) you need to compare it to the 2004 Lexus LS 460 - that car is on another planet. Remember, no one ever talked about panel gaps before the Lexus LS. The Lexus LC 500 & Toyota 4runner are also perhaps the finest examples of quality beyond the closing of just doors.
The mid-2000s were the last of the best built Lexus interior. I have a 2007 GS and every inch of that interior is either wood, leather, soft touch material. No hard plastic anywhere.
I have a 2015 Lexus RC 350 F-sport and the whole car feels incredibly well built and I love the red leather seats. It just turned over 75,000 miles and there is no rattles and everything about it works like it's new. I've looked at the newer RC's and very little has changed on the exterior and the interior still looks like the 2015 models.

You're partially correct. German vehicles are unbeatable for performance and refinement - nothing is nicer to drive - but their quality (as in reliability) is demonstrably quite poor by today's standards. If you want quality/reliability, Honda or Toyota - even their cheapest products - are vastly superior.

Even if I agree on the first part (keep in mind that some countries like France have most of their energy from nuclear power plants, but for now globally standpoint coals are the most common source of electricity) plastic isn't that much of a problem compared to things like the batteries, which make the biggest environment damage in the car. What do expect from a company that has zero experience building cars in the first place? And it isn’t hard. It’s a body with a battery pack, no transmissions or engine to have to build. So the quality is abysmal for the amount of little parts used.

Tesla is NOT a luxury car company. The build quality and the unprofessional service is inexcusable. I own a Model 3 and will tell everyone that you'll regret buying one after your warranty runs out. $200 just to diagnose problems, even if they didn't fix your problem in the first place! $500 to fix a squeaky suspension from a known design flaw! And my car has less than 35K miles! I've only had it for a little over 5 years.

Comparing a Tesla to a Porsche is like comparing McDonald’s to an award winning Michelin 3-star restaurant.
Sure there’s plenty of room for improvement but I think this video is proof that everyone that goes as far as saying that Teslas are badly built, and have quality comparable to cheap economy cars are simply exaggerating. It’s not that bad; nowhere near as bad as people say.
About the 993 Porsche, yes it’s built amazingly. However, a 911, especially back then, is a significantly more expensive car than even a Model S. It’s no surprise that an old 911 has such outstanding quality, because the 993 in particular was so overbuilt that they couldn’t turn a profit on them. Porsche nearly went down under with that car. Why do you think they cheapened out with the 996’s build quality?
Before you say anything, I’ve test drive 3 Teslas (none of which had any noticeable quality concerns) and I’ve been in plenty of new luxury cars. You know what? I’ve been in Benzs, and Infinitis with interior quality just as bad as the car in this video. Creaky, flimsy interior pieces, and some inconsistent panel gaps.
What’s more, my mom bought a 2010 Audi Q5 last summer because she wanted to flip it. I drove that car from time to time, and I personally put a couple thousand miles on that car. It’s not much older than the first Model S, but that interior had several loose interior pieces and plasticy parts itself, not to mention parts of the center console that no longer functioned as intended.
Let’s not forget to mention new Aston Martins too…
Not that any of this bothers me in particular; I care more about the meat and potatoes of the car. I can personally care less about plastics pieces. I’m just pointing this out because people single out Tesla like crazy and all things considered it’s not bad. For the average person, the interior will feel good. It’s only when you start to really nitpick when you start to see its flaws, and even that it’s not that serious. This video itself was unbiased, but people who make outrageous statements such as the Prius on the left (in this video, to the left of the Model S) has a better interior, clearly just have intentions of defaming Tesla. My dad has a 2011 Prius. I love the Prius, it’s reliable, and I even drove an 07 in the past, but the interior is obviously way cheaper. If you’d stop exaggerating and compare both cars this would be evident to you, but people care more about what fits their narrative than actual facts, Tesla Stans included. I’m not a Stan, although I am quite fond of their cars, but even if you’re not you have to admit that this whole narrative of them basically being Daewoos is ridiculous.

A Tesla is a consumer product. A Porsche is the luxury version of the consumer product. Tesla's build quality will become a big issue at the pricetag they are selling the cars. The Hyundai Iconic 5 has better build quality. The Iconic 6 looks promising. And that's just 1 (low-level) brand.

Tesla is complete crap!!! Total cult following who are brainwashed into thinking the tech, that you paid thousands extra for, that doesn't even work (aka autonomous driving) somehow excuses the absolutely abysmal build quality. I'll gladly take 3 min to completely fill my gas SUV, at any street corner, while the mindless Tesla sheep have to search for a charging station (that isn't broken) and then sit for an hour to charge your EV at 80%. I also lose zero range in winter parked while you Tesla owners watch your range drain down. Panel gaps, door handles that constantly fail, wing doors that will need replacing multiple times, leaking trunks, terrible paint quality ect...EV may eventually replace gas vehicles but the build quality, charging stations and charging speed are not anywhere close for me to consider switching over.

This was a very good (and fair) comparison. I feel the same way about the differenced between my Mercedes, Audi's, and my current 1st Gen Model S. I love driving the S, I love the tech and the uniqueness, but I much prefer the interiors of my German cars. The more I work on the S (installing aftermarket stuff) the more I hate the interior. Once I get it back all together, I just don't want to touch it anymore. It is definitely fragile and breaks easily.
On the flip side, if they came out with all that tech and Mercedes like interior build quality, it would have been a big gamble. If they didn't sell, it would just be more money lost. Now that they have a demand, I hope they do the right thing and improve the build quality to world class standards since they are charging world class money.
Most German cars have the best build quality, plus they use the best matterials when it comes to the interior pieces. They always use the best leather, camel or horse hair carpets, wood and metals. They also always over engineer everything to last longer and not fall apart on you 4 years later. By the way I love all cars jdm and german made and some american made.
This is true for 30 years ago. But today MB used plastic for the oil pan. That is not the best material for a very high price tag.
If you tell this to a Tesla owner, they'll say: "But my car can fart" or "quality doesn't matter" or "but i can take rest when my car takes me there"

That's the old Model S. Interior design and build quality are greatly improved in the new refreshed Model S.

New Model S greatly improved, it's now on the quality level of a Dacia Sandero :-)

I'm just taking a guess but perhaps the Tesla feels cheaply because they're trying to keep the weight down especially for an electric powered vehicle. That's just a guess though. I suppose they could use carbon fiber in some places instead of plastic (which really is unnecessary) but that would drive up the price considerably.
Lol what?, then why keep this car so overpriced, if they need to use cheap plastic. They can simply lower the price, which they won't, for service too they overcharge you.
@@bam51Sorry I forgot to answer your main question. I think it's simply lack of competition. As more EVs hit the market, I think prices will get better.
I just thought weight might be a concern since EVs were already so much heavier than conventional cars due to the batteries.

I hate to say this but from my personal experience those Tesla cars are CHEAP! My coworker has a 2017 Model S and is so embarrassing how it fails from the moment we are trying to get in the car! The door handles don't pop up as they should when commanding from the remote. Inside it feels very spacious but light weight and fragile. It reminds me a lot of my old 1996 Mustang GT dashboard and door panels materials (plastic). The car is very quick for having 7 years or 50K miles on the clock. The interior rattles a lot with squeaking sounds coming from the plastic rubbing. Tesla sacrificed the quality for technology and speed. The speed and gas prices was their hook to win the consumers. I am not getting one of these until they improve their manufacturing and the battery charging is cordless and free! Nice Porsche and video!
