Thank you so much to all my subscribers and new viewers! Happy New Year 2020!!!! I hope everyone had a great holiday season!
This is my first attempt at 3 piece goblets, and I think the spalting in the sycamore burl and the black palm wood complement each other pretty well. Black palm is insanely hard and brittle, making it an absolute pain to work with, at least for me. If you attempt to drive a nail into black palm, either the nail will bend/break nor the wood will split or crack. That is why I did not attempt to compress the black palm between centers but rather used the jaws to vice-grip the blank while using the tail stock merely for centering. But black palm is worth the effort to get the high natural polish that it achieves, even before applying finish.
A huge "Thank You!" to Acks for sending me their products! Having used Yorkshire Grit for the past year, I feel like I can compare my initial results with Acks to my experience with Yorkshire Grit. I never have and I never will consider abrasive paste or grit paste to be a substitute for fine sanding. There is just no comparison between sanding to 600-800 grit before using grit paste and sanding (as Acks suggests) merely to 320 grit before applying the paste. You will always have micro scratches in wood no matter how fine of sanding you do, but the finer the sanding, the finer those scratches will be. However, I have never considered Yorkshire Grit to be a final finish if simply because Yorkshire grit lacks a robust wax ingredient like carnauba wax, which Acks contains. This is my first experience using a polishing paste. Right now, I cannot compare Yorkshire Fine grit with Acks Polishing paste, but I am impressed with the Acks polishing paste. As you saw, the bases and stems of these goblets had only an Acks Abrasive and Polishing paste finish, and so far it seems to be a very durable finish. Let me know what you think of Acks Abrasive products and if you have any suggestions for me!
A huge thanks Starbond. I am really liking their brown CA glue, and it turned out to be indispensable to this project! I was able to use their fine dispensing tubes to line the delicate rims of the stem and the goblet cups to prevent any chipping.

Retired wood worker and finisher/ refinisher, 50 years in the business.
Black palm is now my new favorite wood.!!
I have seen it before but never worked it, but now, seeing it turned, and especially the intensely spotted end grain, which heavily reminds me of the coat of a "King cheetah" which is much more dense and figured the than the normal spotted cheetah, search on TH-cam if interested, ...I will soon be on a quest to obtain some of this beautiful wood for myself.!!
Thank you so much for exposing me to it's precious heauty.!!
    Sincerely, Sam...

LOL, I watched the video before I read your description. Yeah, I've worked with black palm ONCE. It is an absolute nightmare. Sure it's pretty, but if it isn't suddenly exploding off your drill press, it's exploding off your lathe. That's if you even get the tool to even bite the wood with any kind of consistency. Out of 4 trys, I made 1 pen. KUDOS for the work!

Your opening is just great and to end with the same skyline was just as great.
Your choice of wood was spot on. I really did not catch what the stems were made from, but the spots in that wood look fantastic. I've never seen such beautiful wood as that.
Your whole goblet when finished was just beautiful as well.

John, thanks so much! This was a fun project! I had originally planned to use bloodwood for the base and the stems, but I realized it would be wasting too much wood. David, now is my turn to be late 😁
First time I have seen a black palm wood 😲 Very interesting grain. Is it soft or hard? The final outcome is very stylish like from first quarter of 20th century. Love it.
    Great work my friend.
    Cheers.

Awesome work David. From what i understand replication is one of the hardest things about turning. I've yet to try it. They came out fantastic and a great choice of woods 👍

Jake! Thanks so much, yeah I’ve not practiced it much and got a tad lazy with this one but practice makes... as they say. 😹
