On the topic of DAS, I’m a little concerned as someone with multiple invisible disabilities. These are not autism or autism related. I think it’s unfair to think that anyone who was using this system and isn’t autistic, is misusing the system. This could greatly impact my ability to enjoy Disney. Disney as a whole has been pushing inclusivity and to me it feels like I will be excluded as not disabled enough or what they visualize as disabled , which is something the chronic illness/ invisible illness community deals with enough already. I believe there are people abusing the system. I also think there are many people who’s happy place just got a little less happy. I really thought I would see more empathy here.

I don’t think they were pointing their finger at you. I think Disney has said that if you have a disability such as yours, that you could use a wheelchair/scooter and still wait in line. Autism has sensory issues that causes those lines to be unbearable. They pointed out that people were paying others to help them go to Disney and skip the lines and others were just lying. I feel your pain as my father went long ago, and at the time he was dying from kidney disease, and as we approached a ride one of the cast members stopped us and assumed that he was one of the people who were paid to guide people around the park. My father was black and of course we all look white, and so the cast member decided to defend. We got on the ride, but it was really embarrassing that we had to deal with it. I’m sorry you’re dealing with your disease, but it sounds like Disney can still accommodate you.

This. As someone with a physical disability that is not developmental, and also not a mobility issue, this is leaving us with a lot of unknowns. Disney did a poor job at communicating the accessibility options that will support those of us who do not fall into the “use a scooter” or “developmental” boxes. This is what we’re frustrated with.

As far as DAS, the major problem w this change is that it leaves out people who have actual medical need. My daughter has had 6 brain surgeries and has damage to other areas of her body that cause her to need the ability to use the bathroom at a moment’s notice. She can’t wait any extended time. As a child we used to get the 3 free fast passes w hotel stay so we never applied for DAS but when they went away we finally did and it was a massive help. We never abused the system. Why does my child with documented medical needs not qualify?

I've heard online that for things like needing the bathroom like you mentioned, that a cast member will be able to save your spot in line and then you can just return to where you were after? I'm not 100% sure on this but its just something I've heard, which i guess is better than nothing but its still not great.

As far as DAS, I don’t know about the travel agent issue thing. Tim you are correct about people using DAS to get people on rides (who paid them to do so,) although I think they was awhile ago. Since COVID, Disney in general has cracked down on the misuse of the DAS pass. The DAS virtual registration has been available for quite some time now. Tbh, I highly suggest contacting Disney with regard to issues for which your family member needs a DAS. It really is on a case by case basis.
(Although the other things you’ve mentioned are accurate… the person with the DAS must ride with you etc.)
I just think this is an issue where you can read the list on their website for stipulations and also reach out to Disney if you have a family member who needs a DAS.
DAS has changed over the years. I think the biggest issue is the misuse and why they had to make the changes.
I haven’t heard of people complaining, but I don’t do Twitter or FB. I do have a degree in special education, so this topic is important to me.

      Per Disney website:
      Accommodating Guests with Disabilities
Disney Parks have an unwavering commitment to providing a welcoming, inclusive environment and accessible experiences for our Guests. DAS is one of the programs offered at Walt Disney World Resort theme parks intended to accommodate only those Guests who, due to a developmental disability like autism or similar, are unable to wait in a conventional queue for an extended period of time.
For Guests visiting from April 9 through May 19, 2024, please note:
Pre-arrival conversations to determine eligibility for DAS are available 2-30 days prior to your park visit.
In-person conversations to determine eligibility for DAS will continue to be at Guest Relations locations.
You can book up to 2 one-hour return windows for select experiences using our DAS Advance planning option.
DAS is valid for up to 30 days from the start of the registration. Once the service has elapsed, Guests will need to re-register.

Disney just doesn’t work for everyone. I keep seeing parents attacking each other over who has the worst disability and should get the DAS.
Disney is a privilege. And the only vacation our family has ever been able to do together in 12 years. Our son just can’t do the overstimulation of the crowds at the parks, even outside the lines, so right now we just can’t do Disney. It’s not Disney’s fault.

I actually just recently filed a complaint & spoke to Disney management about the DAS changes. I was denied the program in March & told to use Mobility Return Times. At Disneyland I had to go to find one of just 5 kiosks to make a return time & only a few rides qualified for it. I have mobility issues & cannot stand in long ride queues. Telling me that paying a rental fee for a wheel chair that I wouldn’t need if I could access DAS is the same thing as charging me a fee for having a disability they don’t choose to include in the program. It also limits me to only visiting the parks with someone who will push the wheelchair or paying an even larger fee for an electric wheelchair. They need to understand that making accessibility programs harder to access for people who need it is not a solution to stopping people who abuse the programs.

Here is my 2 cents on DAS.. my husband is a retired Army veteran with 100% disability from the VA.. he has PTSD. It is hard for him to go in lines and generally “deal” with going to the park and the crowds. We were able to use DAS to wait in line.. just not in a Que.. and would allow us to have breaks during the day. Using Genie plus is an option but they sell out quickly.. or you have to wait 5 hours for space mountain and can’t get another genie time until then so it’s not really a good option. I hope they will still be able to make accommodations for him. I love Disneyland but it’s not alway easy for him. So we are not abusing it because the person in our family doesn’t. Have Autism. I fully support those families as well.

So I’m going to disagree a little. I’m a RN and I was on a work trip with my patient. She is paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator. She was allowed a DAS pass because there were only a few specific electric wheelchair rides that could accommodate her. We used DAS to get the one handicap vehicle that was specifically for her situation. On the other hand her brother is autistic, non-verbal and cannot stand in line. We did not abuse the system but I really hope Disney does not keep those out of the line just because my patient is aware but has physical limitations and disabilities that affect her.

We will have to wait and see how the DAS system plays out.
I hate that people abuse a system put in place to help those who really need it. I have zero issues having a medical note like other parks.
As a parent of a child who has received DAS in the past, I do have concerns, and I don't abuse the system. My child should still be covered with the changes. But as a parent I still have to go get a red tag for her wheelchair (that is not why she has DAS). So I have to register online and still go to guest services when I get in the park. Why does a wheelchair need a red tag?
My other concern is that people with autism range in abilities and disabilities from one end of the spectrum to the other.
Again, we will see how this plays out.

Ok, so this is my 2nd comment. The part where Nick mentioned getting to know people, I can be the same way! I also (like) to think that I'd know people for life...once I get to know them I'd like to think I'd know them for a long time..but sometimes it doesn't work that way sadly. Love learning people's stories!

Nick, I’m not sure if you read the comments, but I’m glad to know you like to meet strangers because I would like to say hello if I ever meet you at a park. Also my husband is just like you. Our favorite family quote on vacation is “dad found a friend!” So if you two were to sit next to each other on a plane I can only imagine…😊

I can totally relate to being the parent of a goalkeeper in soccer. My daughter played soccer for 10 years, 8 of those in goal. It IS super stressful.
And we only fly to Long Beach now when we go to Disneyland, it's a 20 minute drive to the parks & no highway.

Years ago, I read someplace that airports are a great place to see celebrities. Not long after that we were flying out of Orlando, and saw a kid from The Hogan Family who had been at Universal’s grand opening the day before, Jeremy Licht.
Then we were waiting for a plane in NYC, and this group of guys with long hair and black leather were getting off a plane. Their sharp dressed wives walked up to greet them. We recognized Dee Snider. Our son, who wasn’t with us, was a big Twisted Sister fan.
We also saw a band in Milwaukee at the airport and they were loading all their instruments into a tiny car. Our son was going to their concert that night. I want to say INXS but not sure.

The thing with DAS is that living with a disability is exhausting. Not just the physical exhaustion from being disabled but the constant hoops you have to jump through to get the help you need. For a lot of disabled people without autism Disney simply wouldn’t be doable and I think it’s awful that disabled people are having to cancel their trips because of this new change. I have a physical disability but I also have autism so I’ll still be able to get DAS but Disney still isn’t asking for proof. So surely anyone can just say they’re autistic? I wasn’t diagnosed until 23 and don’t “look” autistic so will they just not believe me or believe anyone who says they have autism? Universal asks for proof and it’s a waaaay better system as it guarantees no one can abuse it but it’s not just limited to autism. I’m really disappointed Disney didn’t go the same route

  • @steph_stargirl
    @steph_stargirl 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

DAS- it’s the wording that’s an issue by stating developmental disability as my disability is developmental it’s neurological so I did qualify and now I don’t think I will. I haven’t tried Universal as I usually stay in Hard Rock so get unlimited express but I need to see the fallout about what my next trip will look like

    • @spk633
      @spk633 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I will tell you this. Disney needs to educate themselves on Autism. It IS a neurological condition. My son is now 33 and was diagnosed at 2. They need to be concerned more about those "self diagnosing" themselves and getting the pass. It's shameful and make it hard for those that truly need it.

  • @joanna2627

This already happens in the UK where you can apply for an access card through a 3rd party, but this card is accepted at multiple atractions in the UK and Disneyland Paris, where you already have to prove your disability. As a mum of a daughter with autism, im ok with it as we wouldnt be able to do Disney without the pass.

I have bladder and bowel issues. I would happily provide Disney with medical evidence for DAS like I do at Disneyland Paris but unfortunately I'm now facing a potentially anxious and embarrassing time at WDW later in the year. It's a shame others have abused this system and now people with genuine needs (who previously would have been able to wait in a more comfortable environment outside the queue) are in this position. I know there is potentially other options but that means either spending time apart from my husband and child while they wait in the main queue or facing backlash from other guests as I try to leave and return to queue along with the added anxiety of not being able to make it to the bathroom in time. Let's hope the queue times start to improve with less DAS users coming through the LL side 🤞🤞🤞

I have my own personal theory on that I4 traffic, especially going eastbound towards ChampionsGate and I think it’s because the department of transportation did not anticipate the influx of spread of suburban building west of ChampionsGate, and there was only two major entrances and exits before you hit theme park area, which were Haines city and champions skate and so you have an influx of people coming from north and south back roads as well as West I4 all descending on the same area from two exits and one road, which is then leads to massive back ups even if there isn’t an accident. About 6 to 10 miles west of Haines city on i4 they are putting a new exit as well as developing a new entrance style rather than making the ramps and entrances really long without dividers to keep people from zipping too early into traffic.. I have driven that road and route more times than I wish to count in the last 10 years and have witnessed where the problem has started and came up with my own little conspiracy theory as to why. Let me know what you think!

i dont love that theyre changing the DAS pass but i understand why it needs to happen. It's really upsetting that people are just completely taking advantage of it, like the travel agents and other things you mentioned. I personally have used it for my sister and myself because we both get anxiety and sometimes panic attacks from being in crowded, enclosed spaces like ride queues so its frustrating that we might not be able to use the pass anymore and will have to just figure out how to deal with those problems in the future but if this is what they have to do to stop selfish people taking advantage than i respect it. hopefully people who really need it though will still be able to get it.
