Where I live in the US the closest place to buy garbage food is a gas station. If you need "real" food, you have to drive to one of the big supermarkets or go to a healthy food store and pay an arm and a leg for very little. The last time i visited Russia, i was amazed at the variety of food and even at the smallest local store. There is always a choice for affordable and healthy food.

There are 2 standards for butter in Russia: 82.5% and 72.5% of fat. The first is tastier - the second is better for baking. This is a completely natural butter, not a spread or margarine. The other one is also for sale, but it costs much cheaper.
Here in the US, eggs must always be refrigerated. So I was surprised to see eggs being sold at room temperature. I did some research and it looks like the reason eggs must be refrigerated in the US is because they wash them before selling, to make them look more appealing. But washing the eggs strips them of the natural coatings on the eggs, so the eggs will spoil much faster. Therefore they are required to refrigerate the eggs. But it looks like if they just left the eggs alone after coming out of the chicken and don't wash them, they will remain fresh a long time without refrigeration.
Yep. Old rule - there is an easy wa to check whether an egg is still good involving putting it in a pot of water and see whether it swims.... but old rule is 30 days "fresh", then another 30 days if you boil them before the first 30 days.

You will not find apartment block grocery stores like yours here in Canada. I can't say that there are absolutely none, but I have not seen any. Also, your apartment block grocery store is better stocked than what one would typically find in Canadian corner grocery stores. I know it is partly cultural differences, but the western propaganda about Russia is intellectually insulting.

Nice. You don’t find bulk liquor in the U.S. without anti theft devices. In some stores, liquor is in a separate locked room, in which an attendant must open and retrieve the item for the customer. Most oc the cities around here used to be dry. There's liquor stores everywhere now and probably at least half the population hardly drinks. Quite a few people won't drink at all for various reasons.
As somebody who got back from Russia 3 weeks ago and did plenty of grocery shopping in various Russian cities, I really don't understand the purpose of the butter propaganda. I obviously didn't go to every grocery store in Russia, but the ones I did shop in, which included Magnit, other supermarkets and bodegas known as "produktes", were clean, very well stocked and relative to New York, downright cheap. There was, of course, plenty of butter everywhere and at better than fair prices, at least compared to NY. I'm a huge fan of Russian butter, which used to be available in NY, albeit at exorbitant prices, because of the high quality and amazing taste. I will say, Russian butter, due to it's high fat content, is probably not the healthiest, but health be damned, spread that buttery goodness on all manner of excellent Russian bread, especially the dark variety. By the way Russell, thank you for your video on the transit exhibit in Moscow. Based on that video my Russian wife and I went to the exhibit and were were glad we did. Russian public transportation is first class, especially relative to NY, and we were amazed at the quality and quantity of public transportation options. The Moscow in Soviet times exhibit was breathtaking and literally brought a tear to my wife. I actually took a picture of me trying to buy potatoes from the babushka and trying to pay in dollars. She was very good natured and actually wrapped some up for the photo. So, thanks again and keep up the good work! Молодец!

The fact is, one quail egg is equal to one chicken egg by all the elements, but size is smaller. Pros: quail eggs do not have salmonella. Never. It's because the body temp of quial bird is higher than chicken body, and salmonella just can't exist there. Cons: quail eggs are way more expensive, and one have to spend more time to peel 'em boiled. You have to try it someday. 😋

Пятерочка Магнит - это глобальные торговые сети по регионам. Цены ниже чем в Европе, качество хорошее. Санкции, к слову, стимулировали местное производство так как ушли крупные западные производители и появилась отличная возможность занять их место на рынке.

Been in Kazan with my wife caring for my mother in law. From Perth and to all the trolls on here you are clueless, i can say for sure that Australia is a rip off, particularly in medical and dental first class treatment here for 10 to 30% of the cost. Just one example having plasma treatment on my poor knees in Australia cost at least $3000 here $750. First class specialists doctors and premises.

Not the case in my neck of the woods yet (SW London), although the Waitrose in Twickenham has the trolleys all chained up because apparently people are stealing them. 😂 I don't think it's the case of education, it's just that there is a very different culture there, some things are just not done. In the UK we seem to silently condone the petty criminal and anti-social behaviours and most people would just look the other way. Not the case there, in my experience. People generally are more considerate and well-behaved in public, no kids of all ages running amok, people give up seats for the elderly without being asked - small things like that. In the UK at large people seem to have forgotten how to behave like civilised human beings. 😢

Came over 8 months ago from Perth with my wife to care for her mum in Kazan. This place is fantastic been such an eye opener we've been also having first class medical and dental treatment at a fraction of the cost in Australia. We have been lied to about this place, the people are wonderful and generous. I feel like I'm loving in Perth back in the 70s.

Btw prices of food in the nonEU Europe precisely the Balkans are crazy: our local producers are hardly price competitive even if quality is ok and at the same time imports are getting more and expensive. Come winter time we work for food and heating costs since most ppl use electricity and when carbon tax per kg of Co2/KWh kicks in in 2026 we will be kaput as regular ppl have no means to switch to "green" heating options even if it's a thing. We are mostly living in apartment buildings so using coal and wood is not really an option esp. when you either have no elevator in older or a chimney in newly built ones. For comparison butter 250 gr of good quality is cca 4.5 Eur while salaries are in the gutter, inflation rampant and only ppl having some decent living standards are either public employees (mid level and up) and corrupt politicians stealing on public procurement or dishonest businessmen evading taxes and not paying workers fully or legally at all. This is a never ending nightmare. I hope other ppl have it easier...smh

And this is 6,500 km away if in a straight line, or 9,000 if by road! Logistics are well organized... In Moscow we`ve got a big bicycle market with lots of stores and workshops inside (Sokolniki bicycle market). But right now there`s already some snow in the streets so probably it`s not the best time to start shooting about bicycles)) Still crazy electroscooter lads keep riding.

Eggs are only refrigerated in the USA as far as I understand. This is because eggs in USA are being processed through industrial car-wash style machines and this removes natural protective films which keep eggs free from bacteria penetrating the shell. In Europe eggs are not processed and therefore do not require refrigeration. UK supermarkets don't refrigerate eggs.
They are not "processed", they are just washed. Technically, the US system is better as ir prevents accidental contamination AFTER you have broken the shell but now with the source of potential contamination being practically removed there really isn't much difference. BTW. In the Soviet Union people would also refrigerate their eggs. Fridges would have an egg compartment on the door
@@cehaem2 How is it better? US eggs expire very quickly because their shell has been stripped of protection. They get contaminated easily and spoiled easily and that's why they need refrigeration. A waste of money and time for everyone from sellers to consumers.
The cheap eggs in an Australian Aldi discount store $5.19 for a dozen , not $0.70 cents like in Russia and anti theft devices on meat , alcohol , pharmaceuticals and other expensive variety and grocery items .Shop stealing common and everyday . Not having anti theft devices on items in Russian stores speaks volumes about the honesty of Russian people .
In the 90s, after the collapse of the USSR, almost all stores switched to working "over the counter". All goods were behind a barrier, you had to pay for the goods first, and only then the seller gave them to you. Often there was even a grate. Thank God, those times are gone, and today's youth does not even know such a system. This speaks of honesty and prosperity.

Hi Russell, The concept of a 15-minute city in Australia is a joke. Im in rural Queensland , we don't even have a food store here. I have to go to the next town to buy food, or drine to Nanango or Kingaroy if i want more choices. So between 40km to 170km round trips. But as you know, we only have 3 real coices here in OZ, not mentioning the two minor brands that exist. So, based on that, everything is WAY more expensive in rural Queensland compared to Brisbane, and compared to Russia, our prices are hideous . I love your podcast. Keep up the great work

The claim is laughable. In the UK, almost everything is moving toward anti-theft packaging. Go shopping in the UK, and you will see whole shelves of meat, fish, cheese, butter, and alcohol being swept into large carrier bags with no attempt to stop the theft, and apparently, no chance of the police turning up!
I think that depends on where you live and shop tbh. Several of my local Waitrose stores have not yet resorted to such measures, although the expensive items (e.g. prime beef) have security tags. Loca Sainsbury's shops have more of these, ditto Tesco and M&S. Can't speak for other stores, unfortunately. The thing is that people are just brazen and I've witnessed more than once someone just grabbing items and running out of the door, with security men chasing after them. If that happens in an affluent area (Richmond), imagine what's going on in the less well to do areas!!

Thanks Russel. Our cheap (like home brand) butter in Australia (Coles, Wollies, Aldi) is $7 for 500g now. Other brands are more expensive though you don't see such a huge price variance like what you show there! The cheap eggs here are about $5.50 to $7 a dozen but you could pay &10/dozen. Cage eggs are cheaper but it would be hard to find any less than $4/dozen. Food is not locked up here and I've never heard about butter being locked up anywhere. The shops look normal there compared to here though I still can't get over the alcohol being sold at the grocery store there.
I do not get the idea with butter. I mean, arguing that the Russian economy has problems with high tech - I can get that to SOME degree. But Russia is a MAJOR agricultural powerhouse. OBVIOUSLY, they have cows, which OBVIOUSLY means they have Milk, Butter, Cheeses - not necessarily all kinds of cheese, but in general. It makes ZERO sense to assume Russia does not have Butter. By that same logic you can argue they have no natural gas. They also have bread - they do not export all the wheat and starve at home.
200 gram package 65% fat butter costs around €2 here in Romania, with 72% - 82% fat about €2.50 more or less, in the video there I saw some incredibly cheap butter assortments, 72% fat package at the price of 50₽=50 €urocents , even at 82% I saw that you have some cheaper assortments, although most of them still around €2.50 , all in all, there you have a wider range of selection.
Except for the language everything in he shops looks modern, and the packaging is western or Japanese quality. There’s a ton of products to choose from. Russia food seems to be thriving. The consumers don’t look like they’re hurting for choice.
I think I visited Globus Supermarket when I staying on the outskirts of St Petersburg. Love their massive supermarkets, much more exciting than the UK ones. The eggs you mentioned, I believe these are quael eggs.
You will see these "hypermarkets" all over Eastern Europe. They are usually located at shopping malls in the outskirts which sucks because a) getting there takes ages b) without a car you are basically skrewed. These malls sucked a lot of business oout of the city centres. Nowadays it's better but back in the 90s and early 2000s your only option would be an expensive convenience store. When I was in uni in the late 90s I did my weekly shopping once a week which would take me probably around 3,5h.
You can find both butter and margarine, and their mixture (spread). The law prescribes their exact separation, so when buying butter, you can be sure that you are buying butter, and not a mixture with margarine. Physically, they are usually next to each other, but the pack always clearly states what it is. Plus there is the composition - for butter, it is always cream. What is shown in the video is butter. The minimum price for a pack of 180 grams with a fat content of 72% is 1.2 US dollars (at the rate of 1 dollar = 100 rubles). You can pay more - up to 2 dollars. Butter with 82% fat content is a little more expensive - for the same pack it is already about 1.5 dollars and up to 2.5. Large chains often have their own farms and production facilities, which allows them to keep the price a little lower than when purchasing from third-party manufacturers. To buy butter I go to a wholesale market in the vicinity of Moscow ring road. I usually buy 5 kg pack. There is a vast choice of butter - from Belarus, Altai in Siberia, or some localities in Lipetsk, Tambov or else. Last time in September 5 kg cost me 3,000 Roubles (approx.$30). I chop it into more convenient portions of 0.5 kg and store it in freezer. On this market I also buy cheese, chocolate, meat deli products and smoked fish. It comes cheaper to supply there.

We live in a town of about 40,000 and everything you could possible want including doctors and Hospitalsis a 5 to 10 minute drive . We also have paved sidewalks if you want to bike or walk . While we have 3 and 4 story apartments and some townhomes most of our homes are single families where all the homes are in planned areas with treed streets and sidewalks where everything is very appealing . Your last store would be equivalent to a Publix ,Kroger Super Walmart or Costco .and BJs ..

Where I live in the US the closest place to buy garbage food is a gas station. If you need "real" food, you have to drive to one of the big supermarkets or go to a healthy food store and pay an arm and a leg for very little. The last time i visited Russia, i was amazed at the variety of food and even at the smallest local store. There is always a choice for affordable and healthy food.

Here in the US, eggs must always be refrigerated. So I was surprised to see eggs being sold at room temperature. I did some research and it looks like the reason eggs must be refrigerated in the US is because they wash them before selling, to make them look more appealing. But washing the eggs strips them of the natural coatings on the eggs, so the eggs will spoil much faster. Therefore they are required to refrigerate the eggs. But it looks like if they just left the eggs alone after coming out of the chicken and don't wash them, they will remain fresh a long time without refrigeration.
Never sold from fridges here in UK.

You will not find apartment block grocery stores like yours here in Canada. I can't say that there are absolutely none, but I have not seen any. Also, your apartment block grocery store is better stocked than what one would typically find in Canadian corner grocery stores. I know it is partly cultural differences, but the western propaganda about Russia is intellectually insulting.

As somebody who got back from Russia 3 weeks ago and did plenty of grocery shopping in various Russian cities, I really don't understand the purpose of the butter propaganda. I obviously didn't go to every grocery store in Russia, but the ones I did shop in, which included Magnit, other supermarkets and bodegas known as "produktes", were clean, very well stocked and relative to New York, downright cheap. There was, of course, plenty of butter everywhere and at better than fair prices, at least compared to NY. I'm a huge fan of Russian butter, which used to be available in NY, albeit at exorbitant prices, because of the high quality and amazing taste. I will say, Russian butter, due to it's high fat content, is probably not the healthiest, but health be damned, spread that buttery goodness on all manner of excellent Russian bread, especially the dark variety.
By the way Russell, thank you for your video on the transit exhibit in Moscow. Based on that video my Russian wife and I went to the exhibit and were were glad we did. Russian public transportation is first class, especially relative to NY, and we were amazed at the quality and quantity of public transportation options. The Moscow in Soviet times exhibit was breathtaking and literally brought a tear to my wife. I actually took a picture of me trying to buy potatoes from the babushka and trying to pay in dollars. She was very good natured and actually wrapped some up for the photo. So, thanks again and keep up the good work! Молодец!

Hey Russell, those tiny eggs with the dark spots are quail (bird) eggs. They are very tasty and healthy. The fact is, one quail egg is equal to one chicken egg by all the elements, but size is smaller. Pros: quail eggs do not have salmonella. Never. It's because the body temp of quial bird is higher than chicken body, and salmonella just can't exist there. Cons: quail eggs are way more expensive, and one have to spend more time to peel 'em boiled. You have to try it someday. 😋

From Perth and to all the trolls on here you are clueless, i can say for sure that Australia is a rip off, particularly in medical and dental first class treatment here for 10 to 30% of the cost. Not the case in my neck of the woods yet (SW London), although the Waitrose in Twickenham has the trolleys all chained up because apparently people are stealing them. 😂 I don't think it's the case of education, it's just that there is a very different culture there, some things are just not done. In the UK we seem to silently condone the petty criminal and anti-social behaviours and most people would just look the other way. Not the case there, in my experience. People generally are more considerate and well-behaved in public, no kids of all ages running amok, people give up seats for the elderly without being asked - small things like that. In the UK at large people seem to have forgotten how to behave like civilised human beings. 😢

This place is fantastic been such an eye opener we've been also having first class medical and dental treatment at a fraction of the cost in Australia. Come winter time we work for food and heating costs since most ppl use electricity and when carbon tax per kg of Co2/KWh kicks in in 2026 we will be kaput as regular ppl have no means to switch to "green" heating options even if it's a thing.
We are mostly living in apartment buildings so using coal and wood is not really an option esp. when you either have no elevator in older or a chimney in newly built ones.
For comparison butter 250 gr of good quality is cca 4.5 Eur while salaries are in the gutter, inflation rampant and only ppl having some decent living standards are either public employees (mid level and up) and corrupt politicians stealing on public procurement or dishonest businessmen evading taxes and not paying workers fully or legally at all.

This is because eggs in USA are being processed through industrial car-wash style machines and this removes natural protective films which keep eggs free from bacteria penetrating the shell. In Europe eggs are not processed and therefore do not require refrigeration. UK supermarkets don't refrigerate eggs.

Technically, the US system is better as ir prevents accidental contamination AFTER you have broken the shell but now with the source of potential contamination being practically removed there really isn't much difference. Im in rural Queensland , we don't even have a food store here. I have to go to the next town to buy food, or drine to Nanango or Kingaroy if i want more choices. So between 40km to 170km round trips.
But as you know, we only have 3 real coices here in OZ, not mentioning the two minor brands that exist. So, based on that, everything is WAY more expensive in rural Queensland compared to Brisbane, and compared to Russia, our prices are hideous .

The claim is laughable. In the UK, almost everything is moving toward anti-theft packaging. Go shopping in the UK, and you will see whole shelves of meat, fish, cheese, butter, and alcohol being swept into large carrier bags with no attempt to stop the theft, and apparently, no chance of the police turning up!
I think that depends on where you live and shop tbh. Several of my local Waitrose stores have not yet resorted to such measures, although the expensive items (e.g. prime beef) have security tags. Loca Sainsbury's shops have more of these, ditto Tesco and M&S. Can't speak for other stores, unfortunately. The thing is that people are just brazen and I've witnessed more than once someone just grabbing items and running out of the door, with security men chasing after them. If that happens in an affluent area (Richmond), imagine what's going on in the less well to do areas!!

Thanks Russel. Our cheap (like home brand) butter in Australia (Coles, Wollies, Aldi) is $7 for 500g now. Other brands are more expensive though you don't see such a huge price variance like what you show there! The cheap eggs here are about $5.50 to $7 a dozen but you could pay &10/dozen. Cage eggs are cheaper but it would be hard to find any less than $4/dozen. Food is not locked up here and I've never heard about butter being locked up anywhere. The shops look normal there compared to here though I still can't get over the alcohol being sold at the grocery store there.

I do not get the idea with butter. I mean, arguing that the Russian economy has problems with high tech - I can get that to SOME degree. But Russia is a MAJOR agricultural powerhouse. OBVIOUSLY, they have cows, which OBVIOUSLY means they have Milk, Butter, Cheeses - not necessarily all kinds of cheese, but in general. It makes ZERO sense to assume Russia does not have Butter. By that same logic you can argue they have no natural gas. They also have bread - they do not export all the wheat and starve at home.

200 gram package 65% fat butter costs around €2 here in Romania, with 72% - 82% fat about €2.50 more or less, in the video there I saw some incredibly cheap butter assortments, 72% fat package at the price of 50₽=50 €urocents , even at 82% I saw that you have some cheaper assortments, although most of them still around €2.50 , all in all, there you have a wider range of selection.

I think I visited Globus Supermarket when I staying on the outskirts of St Petersburg. Love their massive supermarkets, much more exciting than the UK ones. The eggs you mentioned, I believe these are quael eggs.
You will see these "hypermarkets" all over Eastern Europe. They are usually located at shopping malls in the outskirts which sucks because a) getting there takes ages b) without a car you are basically skrewed. These malls sucked a lot of business oout of the city centres. Nowadays it's better but back in the 90s and early 2000s your only option would be an expensive convenience store. When I was in uni in the late 90s I did my weekly shopping once a week which would take me probably around 3,5h.

Butter in glass cans which you saw is melted butter. Normally we have two standars - 82.5 and 72.5% of fat. Melted is close to 100% and used exclusively for cooking.
Interesing that in ALL stores shown, there are goods "by weight" - mostly candies, fruits and vegetables. Chocolate candies are more expensive than butter but... You put them into a bag by yourself and weight by yourself.

To buy butter I go to a wholesale market in the vicinity of Moscow ring road. I usually buy 5 kg pack. There is a vast choice of butter - from Belarus, Altai in Siberia, or some localities in Lipetsk, Tambov or else. Last time in September 5 kg cost me 3,000 Roubles (approx.$30). I chop it into more convenient portions of 0.5 kg and store it in freezer. On this market I also buy cheese, chocolate, meat deli products and smoked fish. It comes cheaper to supply there.
No one loots shops because Russia, unlike Britain and the US, has never looted or humiliated any people living on its or any other territory.

Eggs on the shelf in my part of London. A high-end brand of butter, Lurpak, which sells for about £7GBP in the large 750g size was security tagged. I have not noticed if it still is. Some typical media coverage was around the high price and comparing it with much cheaper butter; failing to point out that the cheaper butter was in smaller size packs!

We live in a town of about 40,000 and everything you could possible want including doctors and Hospitalsis a 5 to 10 minute drive . We also have paved sidewalks if you want to bike or walk . While we have 3 and 4 story apartments and some townhomes most of our homes are single families where all the homes are in planned areas with treed streets and sidewalks where everything is very appealing . Your last store would be equivalent to a Publix ,Kroger Super Walmart or Costco .and BJs ..

No items are locked up where I stay but a few miles away I think there might be. It’s just a poverty thing, not a country thing. Butter was sensitive to inflation a while back though which is why it was protected. Very expensive and rare, $10 per pack at 1 point.
