I have refoamed several speakers over the years, but I have never tried to put the foam on the back side of the cone as you did. I always glued the foam to the front side of the cone, but it can be a pain. Not sure why it never even occurred to me to try your method. Your method, the cone sits nicely and puts pressure on the new foam to hold itself while the glue dries.
I found a pair of JBL 2600's just last week and after receiving a reforming kit from eBay I was perplexed how to proceed. Then I came upon this video and poof, like new set of speakers for $18.50. Thanks man !
It worked absolutely fine. Thanks for the video. Foam inside slipped down. Not sure where it should be placed. Sound is great though with technics hd301 mini system. Respect to you
Thanks for the video. I have a couple le8t speakers I have had re coned twice since they were new in 1972. Going to try and refoam them this time myself as the voice coils are still good.
Awesome! Refoaming is FAR cheaper compared to reconing, but as you know, they serve two different purposes. Lol. Just be careful not to damage the cone as you scrape the old glue off. :)
I used the glue that came with my kit. So, when you're looking for a re-foam kit, I would get one that includes glue. With all the vibrations and nature of the material, I would not recommend just any glue. If you're just looking for the glue, just do a Google search for "speak repair glue" or "speaker foam glue." Hope that helps! :)
My dad has a pair of Rogers LS8a speakers, but the surround has deteriorated (more like powderised). It appears I will have to do a DIY repair to refoam the surround of 4 drivers (which are 6.5 inches / 165 mm each). Can I seek guidance on: 1) where I can buy good quality surround foam and the glue for the repair work; 2) the type or material of the surround I should buy for these speakers (I believe it's the foam type instead of the rubber type). The concern is if I use the wrong type it may affect the sound of the speakers; and 3) I believe do not need to refoam the tweeters (sorry if this is a naive question), hence seeking confirmation on this. I reside in Malaysia. Thank you in advance or any guidance provided. Best regards
Hey there! I am not a professional in speaker repair, so the most I can tell you is what you saw in the video. For me, the foam and glue came in one kit. I pretty much got one of the cheapest kit I could find on eBay matching the size (diameter) of the low drivers. It has been running fine since I made the video, and I use them daily! As for the tweeter, you shouldn't need to. Normally those drivers are small enough that it's just the diaphragm.
How would it sound befor you replace the fome? I got some old speaker that make a very wierd sound and if that is the only problem i will fix it but i dont want to do all of this and then realise that it hasemt fixed the problem. Also how do you know what foam to order, like what size and from where?
The surround is is one of two points that keep the voice coil aligned. Without the surround the voice coil will likely rub the rest of the motor structure and make a scratching noise. I would gently move the cone by hand to make sure that it doesn't make noise when moved straight in and out. I'm here because I'm about to take on this project for the first time, but this is the third video I've looked at where someone in the comments mentioned that they didn't show how to center the voice coil before attaching the surround to the frame.

@@yeah...7095 speakers reproduce sound based on the signal they receive, if they make noise when they shouldn't be receiving signal, that issue is due to the signal.

It would sound "blown." Like a farting noise. Just measure it, or look up what the size is online based on your speaker's manuals. I think I mentioned it on the video, but I just got it on eBay. This "centering" thing is getting old. While this is technically the "correct" thing to do, I have been using these daily for five years since this video was made, and rather aggressively sometimes. They have been fine.
May I ask what are the pitfalls of not fully removing the old foam? With the speaker model I was working on, I wasn't able to fully separate the driver from the cabinet and thus didn't have much room to maneuver for the foam removal process. I just left it there and glued the new surround on top of the residual old foam.
The spider does 95% of the voice coil centering on the magnet structure, so no worries if that is still attached. It's a thing when a speaker is re-coned, of course.
@@1011010100011 What is the spider? A few other videos mention it without saying what it is. I have not taken my woofers out yet so maybe it’s obvious when I see it. I have JBL speakers which another video says have tight gaps, so maybe use shims or a tone generator for centering. These comments are putting my mind at ease that centering is not that difficult. I'm not sure about using any kind of solvent like alcohol on the cone itself, seeing as it's made from paper treated with chemicals that may soften with solvent and reduce the stiffness of the cone...
I saw another video today, the guy connected a 9 V battery to the negative and positive terminals with thin wire to activate the speaker. I did the same, and it looks like I have a perfectly centered cone. That was the easy part lol. Im having an issue with binding the outer part to the basket. There is a rubber spacer BELOW the rubber surround originally. The glue I ordered with my surrounds from Speaker Works may not be the right kind to bind rubber to rubber. With their blessing, I’ll either remove the rubber gasket/spacer and glue to the basket frame. Or, have them send some glue that is for rubber to rubber. I have a 22yr old pair of Paradigm Monitor 90p v1 that were never sold at retail. They are not serial numbered. They were used at trade shows or perhaps experimental units. Which would explain why all 6 drivers (1 mid, 2 powered subs each) have this same odd gasket and surround configuration. It looked like the gasket and surrounds are molded together. Finding originals would be nearly impossible. Paradigm doesn’t have them lol. They also don’t have explanation as to why the surround is purposely raised instead of glued to the basket. We had a cat who poked a couple of holes in a mid and a surround. I’ve been putting this off since 2018 LOL. Anyway, the 9-volt battery works great to help center the cone before letting them be so they can cure.

That's how you risk blistering a coil, if you don't manage to burn it. DC is kryptonite to any coil. There are only two ways to guarentee alignment. One is to shim it and the other requires a signal generator, which I am not going to disclose the method. Sorry! Outside of that, you are just working on hope that you get it right. Now some speakers can keep a pretty decent alignment because of a firm spider. However if your alignment is off, it won't always show until you blast the speakers and that coil starts to seriously wobble in the gab.
I really hope that people don't take this video as the holly grail of surround replacement. For one, you left a jagged edge of the old surrond on the cone and it looked pretty ratty. Number two, you never shimmed the voice coil to prevent rubbing in the gap and frying the speaker. It's your speakers to do as you wish, but not a good tutorial.

, it's not that easy in general. Normally it's impossible to put that edge foam ring that easy on the cone. You would end up with messy cone and the foam. Cones can by made of various materials - paper, plastic, metal and if you miss the correct amount of glue, everything becomes dirty and it will be impossible to get rid of the residual glue. 1 mm away from the axis and the it may lead to distortions, even a speaker damage, etc.
Perhaps, but for restoring speakers you found in a dumpster, just take your time and have fun. I've been using these speakers daily for almost 4 years now, and they are rocking!

Sorry for the delay! You won't get a good seal, and could get premature separation. It's better to glue to metal instead of old foam.
Don't you need to center the cone with a low hertz tone before gluing it?
Probably. Worked for me without it. Still using them in 2024 daily.

Depends on the condition of the foam. Something too harsh may destroy it.

I only did it since there was a coating on the edge. Three years of daily use, and no problems yet!

I've head that a few times, but still no issues after four years. Guess I got lucky.
The most important step you failed to address, centering the cone with the voice coil. Failing to do so may result in rubbing and damaging the spider.

Correct, however I think you mean damaging the voice coil. Keep in mind, a damaged voicecoil can also lead to damaging the amp.

I used angle grinder to clean mine
