Why Belief Alone Isn’t Enough

  • Have you ever heard someone state, " I believe in God, but I don't believe in prayer?" Is it logical to have an intellectual belief in the existence of God but not trust in His providence and care?
    Today Fr. Mike challenges us to know God more than just knowing about God and to realize that belief alone is not enough. God is not some cosmic genie who doles out magic wishes but a loving Father who wants to meet us in the intimacy of prayer. Do you believe that?

    I just want to thank you father Mike. After finding your videos and watching them along with the online masses I eventually approached my local Catholic church and went through r.c.i.a and was baptised, confirmed and had my first communion on Easter 2021. After years of being scared to approach a church and start the process of becoming a Catholic due to my family's view on the church your videos finally gave me the courage to look past my family's negative views and opinions and to see the truth. Thank you father Mike, god bless you and your entire family. 🙏😌

    I recently discovered Fr. Mike on the Hallow app and I really appreciate his intellectual insights into the Bible and the various contradictions and conflicting ideas in it (I have been a skeptic for a long time) but also his very obvious enthusiasm and passion for the Word. The app and Fr. Mike are helping me through a dark time right now and for that I am forever grateful. Also thank you for making the Bible and Catholic faith easily understandable to those of us who are shyly dipping our toes into the waters of faith.

    I think that prayer makes you humble, and humility it's the path to God. By not praying, and considering that it's not worth it we nourish vanity, because one day we can feel so grateful that our soul will want to say thank you to that God that we don't fully understand, but that counts as a prayer. So giving up who you think you are, acknowledging your need and limitations can take you to pray 🙏

    I know prayer works. My niece's son wanted his mom to try and enroll him into a charter school. He is a smart kid, and not getting the help he needed in the middle school. Because he was trying to enter the school as a 7th grader, he was on a waiting list. I said the rosary every day for him and if I was out and about would go to church and sit and talk to God asking him to help this boy to gain acceptance to this school. One day I asked my niece if she heard from the charter school, and she said, "didn't I tell you, he got in". I know it was due to the prayers I said for him.

    Thank you for this Fr. Mike. Faith and trust in God is about practicing His presence daily and prayer becomes so much a part of it in everything. At a Miles Christi retreat many years ago I asked a priest(retreat master) who continually lived in God's presence how he does it. He told me that it takes "practice" to practice Jesus' presence. It's true.🙏

      You are confusing works with works of the law. Here is what the Bible says about being saved by faith and works. This is a third of what I have.
      Matt. 25:40,45 - Jesus says “Whatever you did to the least of my brothers, you did it to Me.” We are judged and our eternal destiny is determined in accordance with our works.
      Mark 10:21 - Jesus says sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. This means that our salvation depends upon our works.
      Luke 12:43-48 - these verses teach us that we must act according to the Lord’s will. We are judged based upon what we know and then do, not just upon what we know.
      Luke 14:14 - Jesus says we are repaid for the works we have done at the resurrection of the just. Our works lead to salvation.
      Luke 23:41 - some Protestants argue that Jesus gave salvation to the good thief even though the thief did not do any good works. However, the good thief did in fact do a good work, which was rebuking the bad thief when he and others were reviling Jesus. This was a “work” which justified the good thief before Jesus and gained His favor. Moreover, we don’t know if the good thief asked God for forgiveness, did works of penance and charity and was reconciled to God before he was crucified.
      Rom. 2:6-10, 13 - God will judge every man according to his works. Our salvation depends on how we cooperate with God’s grace.
      2 Cor. 5:10 - at the judgment Seat of Christ, we are judged according to what we have done in the body, not how much faith we had.
      2 Cor. 9:6 - Paul says that he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully, in connection with God’s judgment.
      2 Cor. 11:15 - our end will correspond to our deeds. Our works are necessary to both our justification and salvation.
      1 Cor. 3:15 - if works are unnecessary for salvation as many Protestants believe, then why is a man saved (not just rewarded) through fire by a judgment of his works?
      Matt. 7:1-3 - we are not judged just by faith, but actually how we judge others, and we get what we have given. Hence, we are judged according to how we responded to God’s grace during our lives.
      Matt. 10:22, 24:13; Mark 13:13 - Jesus taught that we must endure to the very end to be saved. If this is true, then how can Protestants believe in the erroneous teaching of “Once saved, always saved?” If salvation occurred at a specific point in time when we accepted Jesus as personal Lord and Savior, there would be no need to endure to the end. We would already be saved.
      Matt. 16:27 - Jesus says He will repay every man for what he has done (works).
      Matt. 25:31-46 - Jesus’ teaching on the separation of the sheep from the goats is based on the works that were done during their lives, not just on their acceptance of Christ as Savior. In fact, this teaching even demonstrates that those who are ultimately saved do not necessarily have to know Christ. Also, we don’t accept Christ; He accepts us. God first makes the decision to accept us before we could ever accept Him.
      Neh. 13:14, Psalm 11:7,28:4, Isa. 3:10, 59:18, Jer. 25:14, 50:29, Ezek. 9:10, 11:21, 36:19, Hos. 4:9, 9:15, 12:2, Sir. 16:12,14

    A big thing to recognize is that we must repent. It isn't enough to say we believe that Jesus is God. We MUST repent. Turn from your sins. We can't accept ourselves as slaves. We must be set free.

    Thank you, Father Mike, for your highly valued insights. Faith is actually really trust, offer your days and your life to God plain as it is. God doesn’t need our prayers-we do. It’s the bulk of our relationship with God, and I can’t overemphasize how it needs to be daily. From my humble personal experience: the days on which I pray go more smoothly than those without prayer. Everyone: make it your habit, at least 12 minutes per day, and in time, your prayer habit will become a need …The effects of consistent prayer are profound….🙂

    Prayer is our lifeline and how we talk to our Abba, our beautiful King Jesus and our beloved Holy Spirit, our true family. This is how we grow more intimate with our Lord. We are abiding and resting in Him, but he loves to hear our hearts. He knows what we need before we even ask. We also learn to hear His voice, as we sit in in His presence. There is personal prayer, intercessory prayer, and warring prayer, I’m always talking to the Lord, I love Him so much! We should be praying over others everywhere we go! I let the Holy Spirit lead me, and there’s many divine appointments. I pray at the High places and shut down demonic gateways in my community. It’s our voice that activates The Word from the Spiritual realm into the physical realm. We are ambassadors for Christ Jesus! Speak! Pray! Bless others ❤

      ✝️ Word of truth 🩸
      Ephesians 1 KJV
      13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
      1 Corinthians 15 KJV
      1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
      Romans 3 KJV
      25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
      1 Peter 1 KJV
      19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
      🩸all🩸
      1 John 1 KJV
      7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
      Romans 5 KJV
      9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

    Hi Father, can you do a video for Catholics who have been doing mental prayer for years and what they can expect as they progress? I am 51 and practice mental prayer for one hour minimum a day. I went deeper for 24 hours and it was wretched. I felt so bleak and damned. So I'm back to my one hour. I want direction. You are a great priest. Thanks.

    Sometimes I’ve asked The Father to help me and make me Holy, but I still seem to fall into sin again and again.

      @@glennherron9499 I go to a Catholic school and there is a Chapel. Everyday after lunch I go strait to the Chapel instead of recess, sometimes when my prayer time is done I go outside and play for a few minutes, but spend more time in the Chapel. And God has surly helped these past months.

      @@glennherron9499 I left my private school to go to a public school that was near my house. And I realized that not everyone knows Jesus and wants to have a relationship with him, I learned that there is a lot of evil in this world, but there a lot of good in this world. My bus driver was a Catholic, I would talk to him about the Eucharist, the second coming of Jesus, and other things. I didn’t realize that there are many Catholics living in Georgia, but there’s more than I thought there were. Even my coach is Catholic.Then I keep seeing these videos that talk about the Bible encourages me to go to chapel more every single day after lunch and there wasn’t a day I didn’t want us to spend time without God and then after he lets public school for a few months. I went back to my Catholic school and we have three sisters or nuns. I ask her a bunch of questions and we have a religion class and we just finished exodus and now we’re on Joshua. And now there wasn’t a day or I didn’t want to read the Bible on my own, I just finished reading the entire book of John, all by myself, without any help from anyone else. I learned the way to Eternal life, and it said, whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, you can find that in John chapter 3. John 6 verse 54. It says liver is my flesh and drink my blood. Has he Charlize you no reason I’m up on the last day. Movie night I chose to live, as if Jesus is coming back every day. I’ve been choosing to live like Christ it’s old and behold, even though I can’t be holy on my own. I must ask God for the Grace to be Holy, and it must know that sinning is something that we can’t get away from, and it happens to us every day. But I saw at a significant increase in my face and in my trust in my holiness, and my longing for Christ.

    Hello Father Mike, I agree with how we should pray. God will answer your prayers, but not to provide what you want but what you need. Sometimes He will grant you the gifts in times when you need it the most and it’s not always instant, it could take many days, maybe even many years before you actually receive them.

    Father, thank you for the insightful video. I've been struggling with prayer and Mass. I'm in treatment for depression and anxiety, and lately I've grown to feel that prayer is empty and useless. I don't feel God like I used to anymore. I still try to keep a consistent prayer life, but I'm just going through the motions, it seems. Could you please expound on this more for those of us who can barely say, "Jesus, I trust in You."

    • @philcarlino6942
      @philcarlino6942 ปีที่แล้ว

      Remain consistent in prayer. Persevere. This period of desolation in your life is a challenge, perhaps God is giving you space to show you something. Maybe it's to show how much we must rely on Him for all things. He is not far away, He is right there ready to catch you should you fall. Trust in that, His arms are always open. You will experience consolation again, and this period of desolation will seem so far away from view. Always remember the lessons you learned. I am praying for you; I do not know your specific struggles, but I have experienced the darkness. It is cold and lonely, but the light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. God bless.

    Please pray for me. I’m in such a complicated, doubtful, depressive spot in my faith. I’m ashamed to be this way. I love God but I feel so lost and wrong, and I want to surrender to Him but don’t know what to do. I want to be with God forever, but I have so many doubts and I hate them all. My mind torments me with them. Do you really love God? Do you actually have faith at all? Do you have saving faith? Do you believe? Are you pretending? Are you saved? I feel so condemned and fake and like a failure and I’m so frustrated and afraid. I want to be a good and faithful servant but I just feel so pathetic and I’ve been trying to place all my trust in God! It’s still tough though. I don’t know what I’m doing and just want to rest in God and not be timid of Him and myself and the future, I want to rest with full assurance of my salvation. I feel so unworthy for being like this. I love you all, God loves you! Please pray that I will receive strength, clarity, encouragement, peace and full faith and hope in God.

    "There are more tears wept over answered prayer than unanswered prayer I suppose," St Theresa of Ávila.
    The voyage of a prayer relies on seven angels before the throne according to St Raphael in the book of Tobit and any other saint, great or smalll, that may be involved in the intercession, yet God knows what you pray before you pray.
    God's daily devotion is hearing His people's prayers so pray without ceasing and be persistent in your prayer even though it may not be within God's will let His reply be taken well for His grace is always sufficient for you.
    Trust and obey because there's no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.
    Jesus I trust in you.
