Thank you. Very helpful. I'm so rough on phones, so there's no way I would get a smartphone. Trying to pick a dumbphone, I definitely needed a review like this. Appreciated!
I want a rugged, dumb flip phone that works flawless as a PHONE primarily, has a great camera, decent video capture, a good audio recorder for soundscape capture and for rapid dictation of personal thoughts and ideas, expandable memory, really long battery life, 4G or higher, and is fully WiFi Calling compatible. I could care less how chunky or weighty it is. I don't get this obsession with paper thin phones with tablet size screens. Why is it assumed that dumb phone users have no interest in photography or video recording? Anything so captured would be down loaded to my desktop to be properly experienced.
Just looked up the bands it supports and compared it to cell mapper database from where I've mapped my area. No band 17 but thats not a deal killer as it has just about every other band used in the USA. I think I'm going to snag this phone up and use it. Thanks for the review and posting this video!
Used XP3 for almost 2 years now. Works great and super reliable. The rubber around the edge of the top half has come loose but it is still within the 3 year warranty so I can get this fixed/replaced. Enjoyed this phone a lot and would recommend it to anyone considering a dumbphone. I am currently in the process of upgrading to the XP5plus, it should be here in a few days and I look forward to continuing on with Sonim line and keeping with the durable dumbphones. Smartphones are trash and I don't regret tossing mine 4 years ago.
How is Bluetooth on this phone? Looking to use this with a Cell2Jack device so my father in law can use his home phone with this connected all the time.
I’ve been following the “smart dumb phone” situation for a while now thinking I'm a candidate and my conclusion is: you don’t ride a horse if you have an EV. Most of the people reviewing their experinces with dumb phones are motivated because of social media burnout. I don’t use social media except for youtube and whatsapp so I’m fine with my iPhone. I grew up in the 90s and I was dreaming of the day we had affordable all-purpose devices like in the spy movies and now that we finally got there I'm not getting rid of it because we can't avoid gossiping about every single shitty happening in our lifes.
I've got a new-to-me XP3. I figured out how to set the alarm, but can't shut it off without going through all the settings and manually disabling the alarm. Is there a better way to shut the alarm off?
When the phone rings how do we answer it? How do you pull up your contacts? These are questions that my husband needs to know this is his new phone and he already is having a hard time trying to figure it out.
Wonderful phone. I had to replace my Rugby 4 as it was caught in the 3G turnoff, despite being a 4G phone. This is the best cell phone I've owned since "they" turned off my Panasonic "G1" bag phone ca 2007. Very clear audio, fantastic radio reception - definitely professional grade. I've disabled the browser and a couple of other features, so the battery lasts well over a week! I particularly like the easily accessible "switch panel" which lets me turn on and off bluetooth, wifi, network data, etc, etc all from one place. It is a bit odd in how it "drives", but the only real complaint I have is that I cannot seem to be able to browse its file system via bluetooth from my computer.
@@Saved-qv2ow Overall, I like it better. The Sonim "drives" a little bit odd, and things are too "sticky" for my taste - whatever screen you're on is what it stays on until you exit via keypress; I'm used to closing the lid taking me back to the home screen. Thanks for all the reviews and info, Jose. I've watched your reviews on the this Sonim and also the Kyocera Dura XV Extreme. It's a tough call on which to choose between those two. I'm on T-Mobile so its tempting to just go with the Sonim. But I'm really liking the design of the Kyocera and I see some unlocked for sale. Would you be able to give your opinion on which to choose - if either was a better experience, or if there's some feature I'm overlooking that makes one better than the other? Thanks in advance!

I like the look of the Kyocera better as well however, after ordering it, the texting takes 2 to 3 seconds in between letters which is quite a long time compared to the Nokia flip phone I had that just took a second. That is very slow texting, if you text a lot. I am returning the Kyocera to Walmart. That is why I’m looking into this phone to see if the texting is faster.
how do I login into maps? I'm having trouble. I was able to put my email but it asks me to type a letter that's showing me to prove that I'm not a robot. By pressing ok to select a letter, it automatically assumes that I'm done typing, so it changes the letter I'm suppose to type. I cannot type them all because of this issue therefore, I'm not able to log in. Can you help me please?
Even if you install it (which you get to do it via APK or ADB), you won't be able to use it because it needs a virtual mouse and the virtual mouse doesn't work on this device.

I love your video and you said something that I have been preaching about for a long time and that is the fact that there are still many people in the world who have no use for a fancy smartphone or even a touch screen. Yet their job is pretty tough on phones. They get dropped a lot and sometimes they even get ran over by a vehicle. About the toughest phone that I have come across was the Samsung Rugby. I know that a lot of the world can't wait for the next new gadget and the fanciest on the market because it they think it makes them look like they have a lot of money. But there are a lot of simple people that just want a simple, dependable phone. I don't want to hear about how they change the stuff inside to make it work with the new super 5G. Well I say that if they can put all of the stuff needed for it to work on the new frequency band into a a damn watch then it should be no problem to make a version of the rugby that is up to date with everything, but doesn't have to be fancy
Hi Jose, Great video. One question, how does it hold up in 2024? I've been eying the Kyocera, but since that device does not have international/European support the sonim must be the next best thing.
Nice review! Just purchased Kyocera DuraXE Epic, and wondering if I rushed with my decision. Couple questions - is the camera 5MP or 8MP? Also, is the 4G/LTE the same, or better?
Great video! I stumbled upon your reviews in my search for liberation from the internet. I purchased the Lightphone2 but had to return due to my rural location and need for WiFi calling. I am a toss up between the XP3+ and the XP5s. Aside for the obvious flip/brick.... what are the pros/cons/
Beside for factor, no differences tbh. The only major one depends on whether you want to use extra apps or not. The XP5s can install android apps and use a virtual mouse, the XP3+ does not.
Jose, thanks for the video! I'm trying to find a good phone for an elderly relative and I haven't been able to find her ANYTHING user friendly. How hard it it to make an outgoing call (as in how many steps does the process take)? And how many steps does it take to answer a call? Also, is there a way to turn off the screen lock feature and leave the phone continuously unlocked? Thanks!
Open the phone to answer or click the call key or top left key. Making a call is as easy as dialing the number and pressing call. You can leave it unlocked if you want.
The CAT s22 had too many features for me so I just ordered a Sonim to replace my Kyocera duraxv extreme. Hoping it fits the bill! I just wish the sonim had the modern feel of the CAT. That's my favorite of that flip phone even though it is so large.
I was looking to get this for my 89 year old mother to replace the flip phone she has now. I am looking for a phone that is durable that won’t break when she drops it and would be easy for her to use. She only uses her phone to make calls. She does not text or use apps. Would this phone be a good option for her?
Yes but I wouldn't necessarily go with the the plus because it sounds like she wouldn't benefit from the *Plus* edition and the original is cost 60% less. But if you got it go for it both models are quite durable
Hello Jose, I appreciate your TH-cam videos and dumbphone finder. My 10 year old Samsung Rugby is about to become useless and I need a replacement, soon. I am very tech illiterate. Based on your reviews I am leaning towards the Sonim XP3 Plus over the Cat s22. I have a few questions about the XP3 Plus: 1. Does it have maps/navigation built in, if not what do you recommend to use (that is easy to access/download)?; 2. Does it have a QR reader (many restaurants have eliminated menus and direct one to a QR (something I never used [n/a w/ Rugby]). Thanks, Robert
If you need maps, go with the CAT. The Sonim sadly does not have navigation and apps from Android don't work well with it. For qr codes, as well, the CAT S22 works best.
Hi Jose, Planning on shifting my whole family off smartphones, and this model seems the best for all of us and all minimum use cases. Have one critical question would appreciate your response if possible: can I install Signal on this device? And will it function with same security (from what you can see) as an average Android smartphone? Many thanks in advance and love your content, please keep up the great work! God bless
You can install signal, but won't be able to use it very well. The phone cannot select chats but it can display them. The CAT S22 Flip would be a better option for signal and security with the same reliability as other Android devices.
Just got this phone a couple days before your review. A problem I am having is when I'm typing a word that has a repeat letter or another letter on the same key, even if I press right arrow it doesn't switch to the next letter. I still have to wait a second to start typing the next letter. Very annoying detail and I don't see a way to change it
I am aware there is always a way to manually install .apk files in android but your review gave the impression that it was a native feature. Another gripe I found with phone is the volume key only changes the media volume by default and there I don't see a way to change it's default function. So if I want to change the notification volume then I have to go into the settings menu. Make my way to the sound tab, then scroll down to notification volume and ringer volume and change them there. That's at least 10 button presses just to change the ringer volume; very inconvenient. Yes I'm aware there a profiles feature for sounds but I've found that that feature changes the ringtones ive changed back to their default sounds when I use it.
Please clarify about this new dumbphone. I used till Sept 22 my Sonim xp3(xp3800) when T-mobile Said it would be canceled by Jan. 1, 2022 because it would not take 5G. Please advise if any stylus is required as my hands cannot adapt. So happy to see the updated simple Sonim xp+
This dumbphone will work after January 1, 2022. You don't need a 5G device, only VoLTE :) I believe the Sonim XP3 (XP3800) only supports 4G (non-LTE) on T-mobile, but you will be able to still use it on MVNO's in the United States. No need for a stylus for the device, it is a great update to the Sonim XP3 :D
Thanks for making this video. I've been a proud user of a Samsung Convoy 2 for many years. However, technology advancements (and Verizon) are forcing me to get a new phone that is 4G. This has been a very difficult and frustrating situation for me since my Convoy still works pretty well. T-Mobile seems to be the only major company who is interested in doing business with people who want basic phones. After a lot of research, this phone seems the most similar to my Convoy. Before I cross over and commit though I want to do thorough research. Your video helped a lot because it showed a little about how the phone works. I've read mixed reviews on the T-Mobile site that texting is difficult and the programming can be confusing. What are your thoughts on this? The Sonim definitely looks more complex than my Convoy.
Texting is pretty standard. You can use T9 for predictive text or the triple click method. Call quality and battery life on the Sonim are excellent. If you are looking for calls and texts only, the Sonim is a very good option.
Got my new Sonim xp3 yesterday. So far I figured out a lot of the features. There's a couple symbols at the top though that I don't understand. Near the T-Mobile logo in the top left corner, there's something that looks like an infinity symbol and also one that looks like a download symbol. Any ideas?
With the + can I get spotify? My priorities from most to least important: Durable, calling, text (any form), spotify(&BT), basic data as an absolute last resort Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I've always been torn when it comes to Sonim & Kyocera rugged devices. What are your thoughts comparing this to the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme? in regards to call quality, responsiveness, etc. Do you have a rugged flip phone showdown video?
great vid! what's a main difference between this and the Sonim xp3? I saw that the Sonim xp3 regular is significantly cheaper than the xp3+ so I was thinking of going for that one (im on sprint)
A bit better battery life, newer version of android, and some incremental things like faster processor, ram, etc. Nothing major tbh, I’d still get the XP3 if its significantly cheaper
We are stuck getting this phone because we need the rugged for work/PTT (Sprint - T- Mobile). The top 3 buttons do not show what they do. On the original XP3 & XP5s, they are notification, menu, and return/back key. Are those keys still functioning for notifications and menu?
@@JoseBriones Bummer. Was hoping this was only on Business units and not consumer units. CAT S22 flip isn't available for Canadians like most good phones.
How is the quality of a call when you hold the phone up to your ear, can you hear the person and can they hear you clearly without being on speaker? I have a new K phone and only on speaker can I hear the person loud and clear and they can kind of understand me on or off speaker.
I did not find a review of the XP3 on your TH-cam. Reviews I've read have very mixed opinions about the quality of the predictive/T9 texting. Any insights? I have a Kyocera DuraXE Epic and the predictive texting is HORRIBLE. You have to arrow down and select every word. It does not form words automatically as you type. It does not capitalize names, common conjunctions are missing, no way to add to dictionary, etc., etc. Thanks-
Which Kyocera? The DuraXE or the DuraXV? I was just told by another Kyocera reviewer that the DuraXV texting is better than the newer DuraXV+. Is texting on the XP3+ the same as the old XP3? From what you demonstrate in this video, it looks better than my DuraXE. At least words form as you type that are likely the words you want. I also have the Nokia 2780 which has FANTASTIC predictive texting, but flimsy build and other quirks I'm not thrilled about.
No One I know, and these are people who can figure out just about anything, cannot figure out how to TEXT messages. Starting at the beginning Where does one START to find and TEXT messages without predictive texting?
I need a non-touchscreen, limited functionality, tactile phone for a 90 yr old who gets confused by all the incoming scam calls (such as, This is officer Smith from the IRS, you owe $10,000). It is of zero use to constantly block individual numbers from scammers, so I am looking for a flip phone which permits "do not distub" and then "allow incoming calls from contacts only." The ZTE Cymbal 2 currently in use at the senior facility, but it does not have this functionality, does the Sonim XP3 Plus have the (block all but allow from contacts) feature available? Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi, Thanks for your great reviews! I saw you mention on your website that the Sonim XP3+ has 'Voice to Text' capability. I was wondering if you can kindly let me know how to enable that feature? Thank you so much!
It's via the Sonim assistant. There is an assistant app that you need to look for on business apps or something like that and it should be enabled to get voice to text commands.
I assume the battery is removable? This looks really good! This and the cat phone have a more distinct look compared to the boring slabs of today. I'd really love to see you react/review old flip phones and pre iPhone smartphones, like from the 2000s! That was a golden age, you actually had competing OSs and form factors
Not easily. You could set it up via ADB with a bunch of apps that will receive Google calendar, but the process is cumbersome and tbh not worth it. Look into the CAT S22 or the Kyocera Dura XV
@@JoseBriones Okay, so not worth it. I have the CAT S22 FLIP and in my opinion the best phone for Android Go. It's a perfect balance between functionality and not to much "smartphone" (not risk being clued to the phone). But the automatic update (Android update/firmware update) broke the phone. Since then the speaker phone do not work. To bad there is not a phone like CAT B22 FLIP. Very good phone if you want to stay on focus throughout the day. Thank you for your input.

I am looking for a phone that is durable that won’t break when she drops it and would be easy for her to use. She only uses her phone to make calls. She does not text or use apps. Would this phone be a good option for her?
Absolutely. This phone is super durable
Yes but I wouldn't necessarily go with the the plus because it sounds like she wouldn't benefit from the *Plus* edition and the original is cost 60% less. But if you got it go for it both models are quite durable
Hey man, can I plug a handset ☎️ into the audio jack and talk on the phone wirh it closed?
How is it in compare with the Kyocera extreme?
Very comparable, but the Kyocera can have extra apps work. If that's important to you, go Kyocera. Otherwise, the battery on the Sonim is better.
@@JoseBriones Thanks
@@JoseBriones Kyocera told me that I can’t download apps on Kyocera extreme phones. How do everyone install apps on Kyocera flip phones?
@@Elidordek check my channel. There is a video called. How to install apps on android dumbphones.
Can you text on this phone or is it only responsive to voice commands?
You can text.
@@JoseBriones Ok, good. Thanks for your response.
Can you share internet with this phone?
Having a difficult time deciding between this and the F1 Pro. I only need quality talk and text, nothing else. Thoughts?
Either its fine
Hi Jose,
Planning on shifting my whole family off smartphones, and this model seems the best for all of us and all minimum use cases.
I use Red Pocket (US reseller)that uses T-Mobile's network. Would this work on it?
It should
Great review Jose . I have had XP3 and now wait For XP3PLUS ...and Cat S22 Flip
Do you plan on using both simultaneously.

How to plug I. The charges
Just got this phone a couple days before your review. A problem I am having is when I'm typing a word that has a repeat letter or another letter on the same key, even if I press right arrow it doesn't switch to the next letter. I still have to wait a second to start typing the next letter. Very annoying detail and I don't see a way to change it
Also you said I can install android apps? Can you explain this feature because I don't see a way to do this natively
You first have to enable developer options, adb, and then you can install apps via sideloading or by downloading an apk to the device :)
@@benjaminballas3213 That really sounds like a pain in the ass.
@@Erix7810 yea don't buy this phone I am still disappointed I wasted $200 on it, I was better off sticking with my old phone.
Does this works in Canada, Lots of these phones are not available in Canada.
As long as it’s unlocked, it should work.
@@JoseBriones Thank you again. I will shop around With the bi3 and alternate MVNO's-YES I understand now and will ask for VoLTE only Your the best.
does it also have the play store built in?
No play store.
Why can’t I receive text nor pictures on my Sonim xp3 plus?
What carrier are you using? It may be your settings for MMS and data.
Where is the space bar for messaging???
The 0 key
Any ideas?
Very good review, 😊 thanks
Hello! Is it necessary to have or create a google account for using this phone? (I ask because it is an Android phone)
And question 2: For how long will I be able to use this phone because of Android? For how many years will the Android Version be supported?
Not needed. No support or updates.
Can you use a usb c wired keyboard with this?
No as far as I know.
@@JoseBriones I'll confirm or deny when mine comes.
Do this have a touchscreen?
No, he says it in his video
With the + can I get spotify?
My priorities from most to least important:
Durable, calling, text (any form), spotify(&BT), basic data as an absolute last resort
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Cat S22 would be better. Since this review, Sonim blocked apk's and access and use of any extra apps that you may want to sideload
@@JoseBriones Does that mean we can't install whatsapp or signal on the unlocked version anymore?
@@p8photo You can install it, but it won't work well. It would be mainly as a read device rather than interacting with it.
Bro we just need a phone like this just the screen be touch screen and more Ram and Gb google maps and I would buy it for sure and hd camera
Does it have USB OTG? Can you connect a flash drive to it or a USB keyboard?
Yes. And yes.
I've always been torn when it comes to Sonim & Kyocera rugged devices. What are your thoughts comparing this to the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme? in regards to call quality, responsiveness, etc. Do you have a rugged flip phone showdown video?
All very similar. If all you need is basic functions, the Sonim XP3 Plus is best. Kyocera is very good as well, but the XP3 Plus is a bit better.
great vid! what's a main difference between this and the Sonim xp3? I saw that the Sonim xp3 regular is significantly cheaper than the xp3+ so I was thinking of going for that one (im on sprint)
A bit better battery life, newer version of android, and some incremental things like faster processor, ram, etc. Nothing major tbh, I’d still get the XP3 if its significantly cheaper
Can you tell me where the space bar key is on the keyboard?
The key is 0
@@JoseBriones Thanks!
We are stuck getting this phone because we need the rugged for work/PTT (Sprint - T- Mobile). The top 3 buttons do not show what they do. On the original XP3 & XP5s, they are notification, menu, and return/back key. Are those keys still functioning for notifications and menu?
Yes. Same thing as the originals.
@@JoseBriones Thank you!
I heard that the XP3+ requires signed APKs from Sonim unless I use ADB. Is this true?
Correct
@@JoseBriones Bummer. Was hoping this was only on Business units and not consumer units. CAT S22 flip isn't available for Canadians like most good phones.
Nice video. Unfortunately, the dumbphone link in your video description section no longer functions. Are you still a fan of dumb phones? If so which?
Just fixed the link! I still use dumb phones :)
How is the quality of a call when you hold the phone up to your ear, can you hear the person and can they hear you clearly without being on speaker? I have a new K phone and only on speaker can I hear the person loud and clear and they can kind of understand me on or off speaker.
Yes. You can hear them loud and clear on your ear.
@@JoseBriones Thank you.
Are you able to track the phone? Would like to have a phone like this for my kid when they’re old enough.
If you install a tracking app, it is possible. You may need to find a provider that doesn't require google services.
i do not think the virtual mouse works on this since it runs android 11 , but other than that this is a great informative review !👍👍
Thanks-
Sonim is not much better than Kyocera
Which Kyocera? The DuraXE or the DuraXV? I was just told by another Kyocera reviewer that the DuraXV texting is better than the newer DuraXV+. Is texting on the XP3+ the same as the old XP3? From what you demonstrate in this video, it looks better than my DuraXE. At least words form as you type that are likely the words you want. I also have the Nokia 2780 which has FANTASTIC predictive texting, but flimsy build and other quirks I'm not thrilled about.
Hi is this simmular to the kyocera flip phone
Yes
No One I know, and these are people who can figure out just about anything, cannot figure out how to TEXT messages. Starting at the beginning Where does one START to find and TEXT messages without predictive texting?
You have to enable the keyboard by pressing the # key.
I wonder how does this compare to the Razr V3 in thickness?
Way thicker.
@@JoseBriones Huh. Is it about twice as thick?

Nope.
CAT S22 is a better proposition for this due to the call blocking tech being available as a feature on that phone

Would this be able to get things like TH-cam, Facebook messenger, and Apple Music?
You could install it, but in order to use it you’ll have to use a Bluetooth mouse. If you want those features, consider the CAT S22 Flip
may get to trying this for a couple days, a touch screen is going to make me use it too much. how would you say is its t9 holding up?
T9 is holding up great. It works flawless tbh
I like the CAT S22 Flip but the company are no more, so I need to find another dumb phone, since the speaker phone do not work since the update.
I assume the battery is removable? This looks really good! This and the cat phone have a more distinct look compared to the boring slabs of today. I'd really love to see you react/review old flip phones and pre iPhone smartphones, like from the 2000s! That was a golden age, you actually had competing OSs and form factors

Can you sync your Google Calendar to this phone?
