    Most of us can relate to not having enough endurance to finish a practice session or performance and we are left to wonder how to build endurance on trumpet.
    In this video you will find 10 tips on how to build endurance on trumpet and make your life a little easier when it comes to playing the horn.
    Building endurance on the trumpet takes time which is why having a trumpet routine is so important. The act of diligent practice is one significant way to build your trumpet endurance. The hardest part about that is doing it daily but it will build your endurance.

      Long tones followed by a rest to flush out the burn and give the embouchure time to build muscle. I do the same thing to increase endurance for cycling, just different muscles but the same benefits

      Great video!! Practicing softly is by far the best (and for some reason secret) tip. I spent years playing the "conventional" way both as a student and professionally. 9 out of 10 professors will tell you that more air and long tones are the answer to everything. I spent years doing just that and the more I did it the worse I got. It wasn't until I got tired of all the b.s and decided to become obsessed with lead playing. It's been 4 years now and my range and endurance is the best it has ever been and the best I could have ever imagined, mostly thanks to the fact that I now practice my high notes very softly. I don't focus on my sound as much as I used to (when practicing endurance and range). In fact, I don' t even care if it sounds bad, what I focus on the most is how I am spending my energy to produce my sound and how can I make it even easier?
      As a result of my research and obsession with lead playing, I also no longer have any "bad" or "good" days.
      Another thing I learned is to stop being obsessed with practicing so many slurs and practice more articulations. Too many players don't practice articulation enough (specially jazz) and don't understand that the biggest difference between an average player and a great player is not how they slur but how they articulate.
      For me, practicing too many slurs and playing too loud were the 2 biggest mistakes.
      I know this is long but I just wanted to share my experience.

I'm sorry I have to tell you but I've been watching you for like 3 years now and you don't talk about about making music... It's all technical stuff period. full of book stuff you never just throw that s*** out the window and play

      I’ve always had issues with endurance and I have a lot of time on my hands most days, so I’ll at least put 3 or 4 into work.

      Yes!!! I played a job over the holidays and even though I practice a lot my body was still screaming, "what are you doing!?!" 😆Practice is NOT the same as performing. 😬

    EXCELLENT wisdom, flowing from your chops. I'm an old guitarist that never went anywhere without it. Achieved the highest level of Carpal Tunnel a person could get, from using heavy equipment at work and had the surgery on both wrists. It ended my high levels of pain, but I lost the precise use of my hands. I can No Longer play guitar! I love to play music, so I'm conditioning my lips to let them play my music, instead. Trumpet and Slide Trombone. I'm about 60 days to be 70. It's helping build my Lungs up, so it's helping my health. It's just forming a ghoulish face to make notes flow out of a twisted bunch of brass tubing and out a funnel. (The lyrics of an old song, it goes in here and around and around and comes out here.)
    I think you called that hicky-dololly a "War Borden Peet." That will help build my embothure (I can't spell it right.) make your lips form right, to flutter properly to rattle out sound.?😉
    Thank you for your views. I subbed with all notifications. I watch lots of people talking about habits NOT to get into, in playing a horn. I have found lots of playing one consist a lot of the way your mouth is shaped, how your teeth mesh and the different configurations you contort your tongue into BEFORE the wind actually GETS TO Your lips. Then the square corners of your mouth, your lips configured, just so, and just the right amount of pressure being shoved by your lower diaphragm, out of your lungs, and then being amplified and toned by the horn. It's training one's self to do all that at the same time and have the slide in the right one, of 7 positions, to squeeze out the proper note and wiggle the slide for the vibrato. I'm trying to find a teacher on TH-cam, that teaches elementary kids that don't know ANYTHING about a horn & learn from scratch ! My problem, I've been listening to people that are already GOOD, and have forgotten how a person feels that has never held a horn before. They assume your lips already know what to do and they focus on up above that.

    Great advice! And yes Recovery! So important! Muscles grow AFTER practice, not during practice. The muscle repair process of protein synthesis takes at least 24 hours to complete. You’re a good teacher! Listen to this guy!

    Chris your videos are always full of good info. I like play to long tones first buzz note on m.p. then on trumpet..and yes you are SO right I play too loud my teacher tells me always to play with dynamics .

    Thank u very much this really help I've been playing for almost a decade and always noticed I had a problem with endurance and by simply pressing the trumpet less harder on my lips I managed to play more

    Great information Chris, two takeaways for me are rest is a must during practice especially while during range building, and you are on point when you said” every mouthpiece doesn’t fit ( play) with all trumpets. ..... Different mouthpiece for old horn , now I’m happy again😊

    Great video Chris! Your tips remind me of the time I had to fly to Louisiana from San Francisco to play a job where I didn't sleep the night before, I didn't sleep on the plane, it was 104 degrees and super humid, I was completely dehydrated and exhausted, and when we had to play, I could barely play out of the staff! Lesson learned the hard way. I also like your tip about changing your practice order. Sometimes I'll put a range study earlier in the day BEFORE my chops are fried!     Great video Chris, thanks. My takeaways are rest and melodies. I'm always surprised after a break how I seem to play better than expected. It's almost like the break has allowed my learning to settle somehow. I also play melodies as my practice and getting the end of some is a struggle. And here's my tip for playing longer....sing some verses instead! See you at the workshop.

    I fall into the "comeback player" category. For about the last five years, I played more notes on the organ footpedals than on my trumpet. My range never left. In fact, range was improved so long as I'm not tired. Accuracy and endurance are a completely different story. Putting plenty of rest into my practice routine has been critical.
    Something puzzling is the 7th harmonic. When working with the harmonic series in various exercises, I can't get it to resonate and instead wind up with a fuzzy sound until it jumps to the 8th harmonic.

    Thanks for the tips Chris! I really overdid it a few months ago and now I’ve developed a slight quiver in my upper lip. I’m doing the Caruso “magic six” long tones softly every day and it’s helping some. Have you ever experienced lip shakes from overdoing it?

      I haven’t Experienced shaking. I did pull a muscle before though and it was serious. For me, I had to play through my injury (a different type of playing of course). A few long tones and/or a few isometric exercises a day. Gradually earned back what I lost and more. Soft playing is surely the way to go!

    Doing the tooh tooh tooh 100 times straight... builds endurance... Underwater swimming builds endurance. Riding a bike and whistling at the same time builds endurance... And the number one thing that you can practice that will help your tongue is bird calls... That's right, imitating Birds. RL Harris of the Soul stirrers, Eric dolphy, and myself know that bird calls will get you where you want to be because they flex your throat muscles

      You spend too much time on embouchuree and aperture... You're not talkin about Basic guttural Instinct Rhythm beat-- timing that comes up and when you can imitate them big birds and squawking... Anybody tell you I do OWL calls & wake up in the morning with 5 owls sitting in the branches outside of my house

    You can only be what you practice and perceive during your own journey. All of these tips are good, but I caution the viewer to understand these tips will mean something different as one grows and continues to find their own way, their perceptions change. For instance, I've changed the physics of my trumpet to match my mouthpiece, not the other way around not just by gap but length of lead pipe etc.

    I have 1st part on a piece that my director keeps making me run at 90% of my range as loud and accented as I can and by the time we run the entire piece my chops are so spent I can't play anything. Hoping this helps

      This is not ideal. Directors don't understand because they are mostly concerned with the full band. You must take care of yourself or your playing days will be shorter than they otherwise would be. * Ignore the requests to play all out and save some for later. *

    You loose alought of water when you play the trumpet.or any wind instrument. Of course it's obvious when you empty the water key.,,, Spit valve. I just didn't think about it.🤔drink plenty of water.

      Not to show off, but I use a five pound weight. But whatever works for you is ok.

    Water is good when mixed with electrolytes but just water,too much of the time, isn't the right way to do it.
