I love collecting omnis. They look so cool on the shelf that sometimes I like to just admire and appreciate my collection. It makes me think of my grandpa and how proud he was of his complete encyclopedia collection. Big books just have a certain look and feel that I love.
I'm actually the opposite. I hate single issues because they are so thin you can't really put them on a shelf, and I dislike omnibuses because I find them too large and heavy to read comfortably. For me the standard tpb and various other collected editions are much better since they are easy to read, look decent on the shelf, and are usually the most reprinted. I actually bought the first 2 Ultimate Spider-Man omnibuses but sold them a few months before the 3rd one came out because I just couldn't enjoy reading them sadly. I think my ideal would be box sets like a lot of manga gets where they just throw the standard editions in a box with a poster at a discounted price, but I understand printing 1 bigger book is probably cheapr and easier than reprinting multiple individual books.
Omnibus editions will stand the test of time unlike almost every other format. I’d way rather buy two or three volumes of an Omni that will be complete a run than try to collect 10-15 trades where it’s guaranteed at least 3 of them will be so out of print that it will cost the same as the Omni itself! I’m also a solely dc collector, and their Omnis feel much less predatory than Marvel’s in terms of intentional double dipping and mapping. They’d also rather keep their best 100 Omnis in evergreen than just cycle reprint their whole catalogue like Marvel. I prefer this overall. Otherwise, I just read digitally. Especially for massive series like hellblazer or Claremont’s X Men, that’s the best way.
@@path4061 yes. I was comparing against typical skinnier trades. Epics are cheaper for the same reason, more content in one volume. Before buying my first omni I compared the price of the 7 small trades against the omni (Tomasi's Batman and Robin) and I was surprised how it was cheaper. The ssme thing happened multiple times, so I started to just prefer the omnis as a cheaper, nicer option. For Epics, I remember doing the exercise a couple of times, and the prices were comparable, so I also went for the omnis, considering the bigger format. I do buy Epics though, but omnis became my preferred format.
I use to collect issues one by one but as others have said, you will miss an issue and so its was frustrating for me not completing the series collection, hence the omnibus era was a game changer for collectors. In my opinion you actually save on money and more importantly on time, just be patient and wait till it comes out!!! The omnibus also sits very well in my library booksheves👍. My individual prints are bag & boarded, stored in a long haul box , in a cabinet or in our attic!! At the end of the day whatever your preference may be , as long as you enjoy your comic reading, then thats whats important.
I really appreciated some of your final comments. When you talked about being patient and putting together full stories to read and supplementing with omnis when it makes sense. This resonated with me. I've been collecting single issues since 1987 (both new and back issues). There are so many good stories to read but I don't have the budget to buy everything full price. And frankly, there's no need to. I focus my back issue collecting from the dollar bins. Thankfully, I've found some amazing things that way and have good supply in my area. I do collect some new titles but prices have gotten a little extreme so I really try to focus on my favorite characters. I reserve omnis for things I know I can't find in dollar bins or if I love the art and want it in the oversized format. Love the folio idea too as a way to get favorite runs out of just living in boxes.
I love Omnibus edditions, mainly DC because that's what I started reading when I first go into comic books, and also because the spines for DC Omnis are sooooo cool. I am also really getting into Absolute Editions now too
I'm from Poland, so the only way to buy omnibus editions is through 3rd part sellers that get them from the States. Luckilly, pretty much every single one I've got i got on sale or on a con for like, half their price in dollars. It has become my prefered option for collecting - it looks great on the shelf, it has the bast price to pages value ratio and I never really got the 'it's hard to read' complaint because I usually read by my desk anyway. So I'm currently selling most of my floppies/tpbs and just getting what I actually want in the omnis. Great vid!
Nope, but I looked it up just now and seems really cool! The prices are still very much not Polish-friendly tho, thankfully we have our own store with much better conversion rate
In 2017, I made the decision to give my comic collection to my daughter and started collecting trades so that I could read complete stories. Then one day I found a "Howard the Duck" Omnibus in Vintage Stock for only $50. I had never seen one before, and upon closer inspection I found that it had every issue of his first series, including his first appearance and story arch in "Swamp Thing"! Of course I bought it immediately and when I got home, I jumped on Amazon to see if there were anymore, and to The Wife's dismay, there was so much more! I'll pre-order the ones that I can't wait for, but I definitely go for the deals when I can find them. When I was out of work, I was forced to cancel my pre-order for "Marvel Zombies", and I got it last week for only $70 (cover price: $125). I now have 64 Omnis and counting (as well as a lot of oversized hardcovers, including "Monster-Sized Hellboy" and "Frank Miller's Big, Damn Sin City"). I actually managed to get my hands on the "Secret Wars II" Omnibus for only a hundred bucks a few years ago. I guess the seller didn't know what they had because they sold it as "Acceptable" (so I was only hoping that it had all of its pages and was mostly readable), but this was at least in "Very Good" to "Excellent" condition, and was complete with its dust jacket! For the most part, I can comfortably read them in my lap, but for the bigger ones, I have a coffee table just perfect for reading on. I love that I can finally read the stories that I'd only read references to in Wizard Magazine. In fact, I've gone back to the CBIQ (Comic Book Intelligence Quotient) sections of quite a few back issues and can now ace the quiz in most of them!
at the end of the day the way the book is gonna look on the shelf is the way its gonna look for 99 percent of its life and omnibus look the best on the shelf. plus they are the cheapest format by page count tbh
Definitely worth it. Best way to read runs or events. And no one pays full price for omnis, if we did have to pay full price it would be kinda tough. Single issues are $3 to $5 so an omnibus should cost upwards of $150 for the same content w ad riddled pages in comic book form. So not only is it price effective, it's also greater art coverage w expanded pages, and the most easily accessible option for full runs and events.
Great overview! I'm mostly a single issue collector, but appreciate this video on how to secure Omnibus at a cheaper price. Just came across your channel and subbed.
I usually just go with the format that’s the most affordable be it individual trades, complete collections, etc. I usually go the omni route if I really like the run enough (and of course if there’s an omni) and if I can get it for a decent price, my cap is usually $65. Though there have been a few times where I was at Ollie’s and I see an omni I’m pretty indifferent/unsure about but the $28-$35 is enough to sway me. Worst case is I don’t like it and sell it to break even or make a little profit. It’s always fun to find one really cheap in random places, there’s a second hand clothing shop nearby that I went to for retro hockey jerseys and left with that FF omnibus and Remender’s X-Force for $10.
Omnis, especially HC, are definitely the way for me. I just can put them on a normal book shelf and they feel... well... 'complete'. Far easier to hunt down six Omnis instead of let's say 100 issues. Like everyone else mentioned already... you just got what you want to read, when you want to read it, right on your shelf. No need to search for it.
I stopped buying floppies around 2020. I loved the DC Achives and wished it would of continued. I have a room full of omnibuses and hard cover comic book related book. The reson I switched to Omnibuses is I can find what I want to read when I wand to read it. Also having it all their when I want to read it.
I thought the video is gonna be about whether the Omnibus format is better than other like TPB's and was looking forward to interesting discussion. Was kinda disappointed it was just a list of Omnis You own. Nevertheless thumbs up man :) Regarding the Omnibus prices, check online retailers like Cheap Graphic Novels, Organic Priced Books, Instocktrades. They have Omnis for like 50% or even 60% of cover price on day 1 of the release date as weel as the Preorder prices. This is a big advantage of people living in the US that we Europeans are envy of.
I’d say yes because it’s a waste of of time to go through singles plus you got to bag and board em which takes space especially if if you have full runs so for me omnibus are the best solution or just do digital over singles.
Omnibus is a tricky format. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're not. I don't think they're very good for classic comics as the recoloring is often trash, but for modern comics you don't have that issue as often. The other factor for me is binding. Does it have glued binding or sewn binding? And how strong is the binding as those bigger books are prone to sagging. Also shoutout Motor City Comic Con! That's my local con (even though it's not anywhere near the actual motor city lol). And Vault of Midnight also, I was just at the Detroit location yesterday.
I buy lots of omnibuses. I can read a whole run of comics I cannot afford to buy. So I spent 100.00 on doom patrol omni but one comic book of the early issues was that.. and I have all the daredevil omnis . Kirby omnibuses oh yeah. Love em.
I think the facts answer to your question. The Big Two nowadays are putting all classics into omnibus because thats what most readers want. I am a fan of collected editions but I dont like omnibus (expensive, heavy and space consuming), but I had to admit that they are the most functional way for big events due to the tie-ins. I loved Acts of Vengeance, Atlantis Attacks and DC One Million, there is no way reading those stories on tpb would be as enjoyable as in the omnibus.
Spider-man is also my favorite andy story is similar After years , I finally got to get omnibus for the 3 volumes of ultimate Spider-Man by bendis and Bagley I like asm but that ultimate Spider-Man is my favorite stories in comics, from my childhood
Great video ! If you’re a big Kirby fan you need to search for the Kirby Fourth World Absolute Edition. Seeing the King’s art at that size is awesome and the design of the book is amazing. 💙👍🏼
Ya kinda gotta balance it between trades and omnis. Like I got Vol 1 & 2 The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collections for $20 each. That's vs a $100+ Volume 1 Omnibus, no thanks. But then ya got something like The Zomnibus as just a single Omnibus vs like 10 Marvel Zombies TPBs. So just gotta kinda compare and evaluate
