Oh yeah, that makes things a doozy. Hahaha! But you could also argue that it helps clear things up because instead of having "volume" mean two different things, the collected editions are now called "books" instead of "volumes." But yeah, thanks for the cool comment and the continued support! I honestly should've put that info there in the video too. It totally slipped my mind. Hahaha!
in my country (Turkey), single issues are rarely printed (mostly just first appearance issues like amazing fantasy #15, the incredible hulk #181, etc.) so usually the only way to buy comics is trade paperbacks. But this year, this tradition was broken by one of our comic publishers, they printed Ghost Rider: The Road to Damnation, first in single issues format, then in a trade paperback. They printed all the issues in 2 months. I preferred to wait for the TPB version but some of my friends bought the issues as soon as they came out, they thought that the TPB version wouldn't release for at least 6 months. But the publisher printed the TPB version so fast (the month after they finished the single issues) that all of us were shocked :D
That's a really cool piece of trivia. Thanks for sharing! I'm guessing you're glad you waited for the TPB version. Hahaha! Hope you guys are doing well over there in Turkey! Nice to know they print comics there too. If I may ask, do the local publishers print comics in English or Turkish?

@@spectacularlysentimental thanks, they are printed in Turkish. Some of our comic artists make special variant covers, I guess they sell really well in foreign countries, we can't really buy them :D
This channel is truly a gem dude, this video is like the perfect explanation for collecting and reading comics and their published versions I’ve ever seen. Might even show this to my friends who are interested in comics but have always been intimidated by the tons of ways to read them
Love Scott the Woz! I honestly don't think my videos are that close to his in terms of tone and quality, but I really appreciate the compliment. Thanks for checking out my channel!
Buying them by volume is more like getting a volume of a Manga series, I really only do single issue collecting for potential value purposes (as extremely unlikely as it is that I'll ever end up with another "Immortal Hulk 1" type deal, really I guess I'm just used to the speculation thinking cause a few odd issues of mine are somewhat valuable) but I think buying collected editions is an equally valid way to keep your favorite series alive and thriving, more people should do it tbh.
This was something that confused me for a long time when I was trying to get into Spider-Man. Also I agree when you say single issues are the best way to experience comics. Collected editions have a ton of benefits but binging through a series is nothing like having to wait a month to find out what happens next, which is what comics are all about. I also think that things like vol/issue numbering and following events are much easier to understand for new stuff coming out vs trying to make sense of it after the fact. For a new comic, seeing a new #1 is a good sign that it’s a good point to jump on story-wise. Similarly, following events is easier because you can see on the shelf of your local shop which issues tie in with each other in the current month, or happen around the same time in-universe, which requires a reading guide or an omnibus collection to piece together after the fact. If something significant happens in Detective Comics, you’ll likely see it reflected in that month’s Batman issue as well, but if you’re binging one or other of the series in a collected volume later, you won’t get to see that story development unless you know that the issues came out the same month.
I’ve been getting back into comics over the course of this year and it can be a headache as well telling the difference in how many issues are gathered in a single volume. Sometimes it’s the whole arc, sometimes it’s 5 issues, sometimes it’s 7 issues? I wish there were more precise terms for when I’m trying to find my next read because I much rather get at least a single arc even if it isn’t the end of a character’s era
I think the easiest way to think of relaunch volumes is runs. Though I suppose there are plenty of times when a new team comes on board and the numbering doesn't restart.
In Spain, the company that has the rights for DC used to sell issues VERY cheap. In fact, they used to sell 2 (combined in one) for less than the price of a single issue in America. Let´s say 2 issues (again sold as 1) for less than $4. That being said, they´ve raised the prices considerably and all the titles I read have been changed to trades. As for prices while yes, individually they cost more there are things to consider: it is still cheaper to buy a single issue per month (if there are several that´s another thing but for this example let´s stick with one) than spending $20 at once, and there´s also the time it takes for the trades to become available.
Thank you so much for watching the video and the lovely background on the industry in Spain! If a single issue cost 2 dollars in your country, it's definitely cheaper to collect comics by issue. But from the way I calculated it, I still feel like trades are cheaper than single issues in most places. Most trades cost around $20 each and collect 5-6 issues; since a single issue costs around $4, then buying 5-6 would cost around $20-24. If you take into account the transportation/gas costs that come about by going to the comic shop to get single issues, collecting comics by issue becomes even more expensive compared to just trade waiting. But yeah, in the case of Spain with the $2 issues you guys used to have, trade waiting is more expensive in terms of money.
The only reason I find it hard to keep up with ongoing comics is that I sometimes don't have the time to go drive 30+ minutes there and back. The worst part about that is when I finally do have that time, most of the time the issue I'm looking for is either sold out or not in yet. (Example: I missed out on Absolute Batman, I now have to wait for the second printing. They let me make a pull list which I didn't know existed where they set aside specific series for me which is nice so ig that's not a problem anymore but yeah.)
I agree that having to go to comic shops physically makes collecting a hassle. If it wasn't for my university having a comic book shop near it, I probably wouldn't have started regularly collecting monthly issues last year. Congrats on finally getting a pull list though! Hopefully you don't miss out on anything.
Could be a good idea! I think I've heard "line" used to describe a set of single issue series before (Ultimate Comics line, etc.), but I don't think that term has a set in stone definition. Thanks for the continued support on the videos though! I really appreciate it.
You did a good explaining how Volume 1 collector wise is a very different thing than what may come up when you shop online. I definitely love to pick up floppies for series I love and collected for stuff I'm not sure of, unless the buzz gets real like how you played a role in me hunting down North FF run I'm curious, is there a certain run of comics that you would love to collect?
Hmmm... I think I don't have any ambitions in hunting down back issues to complete comic book series, but I'm currently trying to get the Mark Waid Archie series in volumes for discounted prices. Hahaha! I really love that series, and will probably make a video on it if I do get all the volumes. Thanks for the support as always, TJ! I appreciate it.
I always use Volume for a collection of single issue comics, as that is how manga uses it. I feel like we need a new name for comics that restart at #1. Like maybe Series #1 would be a better name? For example, The Amazing Spider-Man Series #5 Volume #1, would be much better than The Amazing Spider-Man Volume #1 (2018)
Using the word "series" for labeling new titles that restart at #1 again is actually what I would prefer as well. Thanks for the support on the new video!
I totally get how annoying and confusing the system is hahaha. Sometimes the volume numbers don't even help. The Krakoa-Era New Mutants have 2 adjacent runs by Hickman and the other by Brisson, both are labelled Vol 1 lmao. Anyway, great video, I can imagine this being the defacto guide for new readers! Lastly, where do you buy your comic bins from? Been looking here in the PH but can't seem to find reasonably priced ones. Thanks!
Thank you so much for the comment! Nice to hear other Filipinos watching my stuff. As for the Marvel-themed cardboard box, my older cousin bought it for me at Filbar's a few years ago (pre-pandemic). Don't know how much it costs but I'm guessing it was around P500-P600 at the time, and probably around P800-900 today. I only have one comic book bin so far since I haven't collected enough to fill the whole thing. Hahaha! But thanks for reminding me. Will look into it as my box might get filled soon. I definitely don't want to spend too much on one.
I only buy volumes but if it’s something like spider gedon I buy the singles and omnibus, Hellblazer 2018 comics from dc is my favorite comic series so damn good
The price difference of buying trades is often very small or non existent. In some cases , it cost more to buy the trade than it does to buy the individual issues. And often there is no trade to buy. If you don't have to single issues you're just out of luck.
Don’t forget about the occasional collected edition that uses the word “book” instead of “volume” book one, book two, etc
Oh yeah, that makes things a doozy. Hahaha! But you could also argue that it helps clear things up because instead of having "volume" mean two different things, the collected editions are now called "books" instead of "volumes."
But yeah, thanks for the cool comment and the continued support! I honestly should've put that info there in the video too. It totally slipped my mind. Hahaha!
Here's one word that helped me with all this volume confusion, OMNIBUS!
And then marvel named the immortal hulk trade paperbacks omnibuses just to add confusion 😅
Personally I prefer to call collected editions albums cuz that at least sounds like they go together like with music. Besides Europe calls it that.
I actually did not know that. Thanks for the fun fact and checking out my videos as always!
Nah nobody calls that but you 😂
Please don’t add to the confusion.😅

Thank you so much! This comment means a lot.
Wow what a well produced video! I like trade paperback the best probably. The only thing I hate is waiting for the next one to be released haha
Oh my god i love this video, its so neich yet so interesting no one has talked about this
(Also single issues being 10 dollars in australia is the worst)
Thank you so much! I really questioned how many people would love this video, so I'm glad you connected with it!
10 dollar single issues are wild. Do you buy comics monthly? That's insane if you did. How is the comic book industry there by the way?
Your channel is like the Scott The Woz of comic books and it's great
Love Scott the Woz! I honestly don't think my videos are that close to his in terms of tone and quality, but I really appreciate the compliment. Thanks for checking out my channel!

BWAHAHAHA!

Yeah, unfortunately...
