A dirge. The cadence is that of a man walking in shackles. You can hear the chains. The slight reverb might be what it sounds like walking down a concrete corridor covered in decades of layers of gray paint. Anyway that's my take.

This is one of the few Chris Stapleton songs I recommend the studio version of over live simply because of the way the musical choices are mixed. His vocals are stellar either way! Sometimes those musical nuances get lost in a live performance and they paint such a picture! I love the way it starts simply, the complexity is layered in, bit by bit, while your imagination paints the picture of the physical environment and all of the range of emotions this man is experiencing. And then it all circles back around to the simplicity of just the bass as it fades out. I mean ... dayum! I literally see it and feel it!

The bassist is JT Cure, and he’s a beast.
Derek Nixon on drums.
Chris plays lead guitar in addition to vocals.
His wife, Morgane, often sings harmony.
Sometimes Dave Cobb plays rhythm guitar, and Mickey Raphael will join band on harmonica.
There’s a steel guitar player sometimes too, but the core group is Chris, Morgane, JT and Derek.
One of the great things is that as a band they’re SUPER tight live. It’s kinda ridiculous actually. Derek Nixon is a machine.
My favorite from Chris for sure. Glad you like it.
His bassist JT Cure has been with him since the beginning. He plays the stand up bass in “Amanda”, live at the grand Ole Opry, early in Chris’ solo career.
And the bassist is from Elkhorn City, Kentucky....deep in the mountains of the state. His drummer (blocking on his name) also with him for years. If you have watched any of the Austin City Limits performances, there is just Chris on guitar, and this same drum, base duo with Morgane, his wife doing harmony/background vocals. Amazing music!
Anything Chris Stapleton does is fire 🔥 just that simple . And straight to my playlist 🙂
